Stihl's are known for bad air filtration. Fine dust particulate gets in and wreaks havoc. First thing I did to my metal tag 044 was bottom end bearings, meteor piston, work saw ported the original KS jug and slapped a MAXFLOW on it. BOOOM!!! She's back!
Hello Tinman I just purchased a 044 that’s has the top end off it I’m trying to figure out what to put it back together with oem or aftermarket and would love your opinion on what way to go
Soon as the snow leaves I should see saws popping up for sale again . I found 2 I'd like but gotta see if they can do better on price.. a poulan 3400.. And a husky 365..but has 371k recoil..so not sure the story on it.
Its the same way here. Not many saws for sale in winter. So I try and gather projects during the summer and that way I have a sgood supply for winter. I love a 365 husky. Ported they are very very strong..
What I found out is that running Sthill synthetic oil is that the oil starts to degrade and it starts when the oil is only 48 hrs old. I mix 1gallon at a time and add regular 2cycle oil some. Burnt up a 440 by using old gas.

I don't have a 272 top end but I have a 266 top end and piston..may port that and install it on the 630.

I'm a saw lover myself. The older the better.
I love the older saws, they are so simple and reliable.
Oh man I just scored a 266 like that for a hundred dollars off a firewood order. Be a nice stable mate to my 288 I think
