The 1908 is the only one in the Rolex line-up that has an excuse to be blinged up but it is actually elegant!. I don't see the point of slapping precious materials such as diamonds, platinum, gold etc etc on what were supposed to be tool watches in origin, for me it's the equivalent of getting a workman on a building site in jeans , and overalls and then putting a tiara and pearl necklace on em!.
I think its about time people think of Rolex sport watches as jewellery that tells the time, they stoped being tool watches years ago when the price rises started, Rolex knows 99% of buyers baby their watches , as water goes then the most nearly all will see is a swimming pool! The only time I have seen a Rolex being used for its purpose was an uncle of mine who was a Submariner with the British Navy!

I own a classic and 'sober' steel Datejust (126234) that i enjoy for its simple style. Although i appreciate the rolex brand, yet, i am fed up with the new blingy issues of recent years. This gold deepsea is a nonsense and what to say about the ridiculous Diamond Daytonas for Dubai billionaires... This is bad for the brand image.

I really don't get it. According to the market trends, it seems "understatement" is the new black. Even in the preowned market the cheapest Daytonas you can find are the steel/yellow gold versions. Are they stretching the boundaries to reach a more wealthy target? To me, extremely personal opinion, a golden and iced out tool watch looks as right as a sucker punch asking for directions. It makes no sense. I mean, I get the exclusivity of wearing a gold watch shaped as a tool one, it states "because I can", and it's more a matter of good taste than wealth. It'll surely match the golden 6 wheeler G63 in the garage of a sultan, far from being good taste rather brainless ostentation. No, I'm talking about they are going against the market that seems moving towards a more reserved wealth, hidden as possible while remaining intantly recognizable. Nothing against gorgeous gold classic watches, something like A. Lange und Söhne or H. Moser for example. But who am I to discuss the marketing strategies of the biggest watchmaker in the world?
