    The V-Rods were always criminally underappreciated. Killed off by the HD hardcores being so reluctant to ANY kind of change, that they simply would not accept a liquid cooled engine, no matter how much better it was than the air-cooled V-twins. So dumb. Now that HD is producing a few liquid cooled units, it should be interesting to see if they can actually move them, though it's not like the PanAm was marketed towards road glide buyers anyway.
    Love that Yam is finally trying out some bike types that are outside his comfort zone. As much as he dislikes cruiser/bagger/touring bikes, I'd love to see him try out an Indian Challenger, but only AFTER trying a road glide, just to see him eviscerate HD for being so subpar by comparison lol

    • @darkiee69
      @darkiee69 Год назад +1

      I don't think it was the engine as much as the design of the rest of the bike. If they'd put that engine in something more traditional it might have worked.

    • @Anton-ct6ou
      @Anton-ct6ou Год назад

      From what I read, the PanAm has been a huge success sales wise. And if I had cash for a new bike, I would upgrade my aircooled sportster to the new liquid cooled nightster.

      I don't think it was the Harley customers. I looked at V-Rods in a few dealerships about a decade ago, and the salesmen tended to talk shit about them (things like "it has no soul," or "it's not a REAL Harley"). I was quite shocked at how derisive they were of the V-Rod. Since then, I've learned that a lot of Harley dealerships make their money in the services department, and V-Rods are a lot more reliable than other H-D products. Basically, when you go in to buy a motorcycle, the salesmen aren't trying to make a sale; they're trying to guarantee 10 years of appointments for their service department. Selling a V-Rod when they could have sold anything else was not considered a success.

      In New Zealand V-Rods have been hugely popular from day one. Especially among gang members and Meth dealers (sometimes one and the same). This has pushed their prices into the realm of insanity. So much so that they're referred to as the "P-Rod". "P" being the slang name for meth locally.

    If you want to give the V Rod a genuine shot at a decent impression you would get any of the mid control bikes. Night Rod, or the Street Rod. I am 6'1 and have ridden my Night Rod to Deals Gap and all over the country with just a back pack. I did however add the Screaming Eagle Cams, V&H exhaust, and a Power Commander. I ordered my 08 specifically for the slipper clutch, 5 gal tank, 1250cc, and 180 rear tire. I did switch my tire out for a 200 as soon as I used up the original Dunlop. I think a V Rod so equipped would absolutely blow your mind with capabilities no one outside the V Rod Brethren could fathom. I think they are one of the most underrated bikes out there. Good Luck to you and thank you for your contribution to the motorcycling community!!!

    This was a super fun review to watch. I have a 2016 Nightrod Special and it's a blast to ride. Mine still handles turns pretty well bc I'm running a stock 240 rear tire. I've changed out the exhaust because that sucker runs so hot and I needed something that didn't run so close to my leg. I've got that same rear air suspension and a few other mods, but it's a pretty fun bike right from the factory.

    I had one of these and really liked it. Never a single reliability issue with it, fun and easy to ride (not in the twisties, but easy down the street). Like many other commenters, it was the only bike that HD made that I had any interest in. When they killed it, they lost me as a potential new customer. The PanAm uses a similar (modern) engine and I'd consider that, but my goodness, is that bike ugly (the Pan Am). And I say this as someone who sold my NRS for a S1000XR, not exactly a "pretty" bike but at least not so bad that I want to hurl when I see it in the garage. ;) Neither of them has a thing on the Night/VROD though, those were some good looking bikes from the factory, and, with a few mods, easy to make into a "wow" bike.

    Got a 2015 Nightrod Special 2 years back and I gotta say I love it but does have strange ergos and handling characteristics. A low and menacing stance, complete with a low CG (under-the-ass gas tank) that you can really feel in the sweepers. It's def not a canyon carver, but handles better than a 690 lb bike with a stupid fat rear tire & slack rake should. The engine I'd say is a masterpiece and is a thrill to get that needle to 9K. It does run HOT! A very characterful and special Harley IMO. Nice review!

    I remember when these first came out, up against the vtx1800, and road star warrior... The original Harley design had the overly large radiator shroud drag before the pegs, plus it was massively more expensive than its competition with less torque and power, as usual for hd even today sadly.

    "I don't fit on Harleys." As a short rider(5' 4") I feel that in my soul with Harley. I do like what the V-Rod represents, but it is unfortunate that I can only fit on the ultra rare models with mid controls. Otherwise, I can't even fit the forward pegs comfortably. And the aftermarket mid controls price tag is absolutely ridiculous. Which is why all of my cruisers have been Yamahas. The Yamahas are velvety smooth, definitely have that power delivery that one would expect from cruisers, and they are made to actually fit every rider. Not just the six foot plus riders.
    It is a shame of all the models to discontinue, Harley chose to discontinue the V-Rod. I think had they continued the model and continue to make progress with that innovation, there would be in a much better spot than they are right now.

    Sounds great looks better but those forwards look to extreme.. would need mids for myself. I’m 5’10 and I don’t see me making that stretch for long.

    I think this is a cool idea. Let your viewers send you modified bikes to review. That could be pretty neat. Obviously be choosy about what you put on the channel, but I’m sure there are some neat bikes out there.
