Exhaust, tuner AND pulley gearing upgrade. Doing a pulley upgrade like 2 teeth up on rear and 2 teeth down on front keeps the wheel in the same spot, gives incredible bang for buck and you don't have to enter the engine. Sure it means a few more rpm, but the torque increase is awesome. This goes for ANY bike.
HD went tall on the M8 softails for emissions. 2.79 final drive ratio. Next rear tire change go to a plus 4 ie 70 tooth pulley. This changes your final drive ratio to 3.00-1. Acceleration AND top speed will improve no other changes. That’s Assuming a tuner has removed your speed limiter and raised your rpm limit.
Thank you for the awesome advice I recently bought a 2006 1130 v-Rod for my 65th birthday I haven't had a bike in 40 years and all I can say is the V-Rod is one AWESOME MACHINE and if you have a need for speed it will put a smile on your face every time you twist the throttle and you can't putt around on a bike like that you crave that grin again and again,

I remember when the V-Rod came out and I actually liked the look of the bike and didn't mind the water cooling. It was the little tank under the seat with a fuel pump and how complicated the service is on this bike that turned me off to them. They're probably great for the guy who lets the dealer do all his service but for a guy like me who does his own it's not the bike for me. Hats off to you for tackling the service on one of these. You're a good son.
They aren't hard to work on it's just the tear down to get to everything which can be a pain. Valve adjustments aren't too bad, you just have to lower the motor down, that gets expensive if you're paying to have it done.
Not yet lol, dealers will still work on them. Most dealers won't work on a Evo and in some cases a TC 88 anymore. Some dealers have a 10 year policy and they won't work on anything over 10 years old.
Bought my 2012 VRSCF a few months ago, it came with slip-ons, k&n air filter and Thunder Max system. Did the topless mod and had it dyno tuned. The bike is a beast and is a blast to ride. Great video btw.
Damn that's awesome finding one with a ThunderMax already on there, those units are grand themselves! Sounds like you've got everything done right on that bike!
@@GixxerFoo yes Sir, when I took the rear seat off looking for a tuner of some sort, expecting a piggy back style, my heart skipped a beat when I saw the Tmax ECU. Ended up talking with the previous owner through a V rod group on FB and thanked him for trading it in with that system.
Very good advice. Bought 09 with a blown engine from a guy who had the full drag race setup , built motor from Vreelands Harley so I got them to build it again with different block or casing, it does 166 horsepower and just engine was $4500 and this was in 2017. The guy before me had air injection added to it when he raced it and was doing 200 horsepower. They do love the extra air. 166 is more than enough for me for a road legal drag setup, it’s a blast every time and will never sell it, unless I’m crippled lol
I have a 2012 V-Rod Muscle….kept the OEM headers….put the the V&H competition series slip on exhaust, the old OEM super tuner, high flow air cleaner and had a Dyno….it raised the power up a little and that’s enough for me…it’s a really fun bike to ride and I’ll keep it forever. I also have a 2020 Ducati Diavel so if I really want speed I ride that bike….if I want to just cruise then I switch to my 2018 SG CVO. Thanks for the video.
Thanks man ! I have a 2005 V Rod bought it new back then. I have under 3,000 mi. I love it I always wanted a Porsche .I'm not a traditional Harley guy . I just bought a 2015 750 Street used 4,000 mi . I'm 71 years old still like to go fast. I have my original 750 Twin Kawasaki I bought new in 1979 .
I have an ‘07 v-rod VRSCAW. I did the topless mod w/h a K&N and drilled some holes in the stock exhaust to open it up. Sounds great and gave me a little boost. Tuner is my next step. New spark plugs made a big deal too!
Thanks! 👍 That's a monster setup they have with that 1480, you can some serious power out of the Vrod. The motors are very stout so you really don't have anything to worry about with them.
Amazing video. I am picking up a vrod with an akrapovic exhaust and a tuner after watching this I was stuck deciding which one to choose. This video made it obvious the two to 1 exhaust with a tuner is the one
Another trick concerning the airbox mod (besides a Screaming Eagle air filter), I did more than just losing the top: I cut & trimmed the lower to the filter lip, relocated the ATI sensor to the filter lid, made a battery terminal quick release (simular to forklifts), and replaced the 10 side cover screws (Muscle) with quick release pins and JB Welded brass collors in the airbox cover to solve the 20 minute
I had an 04 V-Rod and change the front pulley dropping it two teeth to 26 instead of the stock 28. It picked up 9 mph in the 8th mile and brought the torque band much lower and made the bike more drivable with just the pulley change
I’ve been riding Vrods nearly 20 years and my first one was a 04B. I just got a 08D last month. I’ve done all sorts of things to and with these bikes, I even put a turbo on a couple of them. I have a 13F that I traded my 12F for simply because my MOS in the army was 13F. I put one of those 26T pulleys on it and it is hands down one of my favorite performance mods for the price. We lose a smidge on the top, but acceleration from 0-100mph is wicked. Dropping a gear and banging past traffic has never been more fun.

I responded to your last vid. When I bought my 09 it already had the Stage 2 (cams,TB,Injectors, open air box, SE filter, Tab slip ons, PV tuner). Changed to akropovic 2/1 took it to a tuner in Dallas. Baselined at 112/77, after the dyno was up to 124/85. If I could could find a way to put it back all stock I would do it in a heart beat.
Have cams, 2-1 Akra, open air box with KN filter and power commander tuner. Wouldn't do it again if I had a chance to. Stock with VH slip ons was the sweet spot. Need more power get a diff bike.
Never thought of removing the top of the airbox. About to rip that thing off right now. Just did the 5 gal tank upgrade on my 03. Best mod ive ever done on it.
living over here in Australia i rode my harley 09fxd.... beside a turbo Vrod worked off its guts.... it took off at set of lights in front of me smoked the back tire up and fished tailed through out the gears what a weapon this bike was ......
V Rods were an attempt to best the O G V-Max. The V -Max still lives with 200 hp. Even the gen 84-07 was a much better bike , I still have my 06 ,20000 miles , not even to the valve adjustment yet. K/N, jet kit, no cat. Factory backrest for my wife , we love it for the backroad/short ride. At 638 lbs. It’s decent to manage, I’m 170 . One of the best looking/ sounding factory exhaust ever. Oh and we always make it home!
Thanks, I've never heard that mentioned anywhere else, surprisingly. Some bikes you leave a clip off the lid and it dogs out. So I wouldn't have probably made that a consideration in getting her to open up. I think I haven't sought to make performance upgrades yet because of that whole futility thing, "the thousand you spend for the few extra horses," really isn't that noticeable. And I would have been right because I would have done it lid on. Seeing you're dyno numbers affected like that gives me that "ah haa" moment where i'm simultaneously exited that there's a key to getting hp, and pissed this is the first I'm hearing of it. Good info bro, had considered selling mine l8ly, for this very reason. Always did think the way that lid was shaped didn't get air to it. Especially after you stuff it a box packed full of wires You want to believe HD knows what they're doing building bikes and would never intentionally steal HP from its faithful followers. That would be a.........awwwe, GDHD!
Harley knew what they were doing when they designed that engine. (Yes, with some Porsche input). It was designed after their racing engine. A Motoholligan intake is a great to add for that extra air. Scott Fitzgerald Motorsports, (near Dayton, OH) makes and has a ton a engine performance parts. And does all the tune and Dyno work.
It was a good collaboration, Harley did work with Porsche on that race motor too. They did basically what Indian did with Swiss Auto, they designed and built the Indian motors.
@@GixxerFoo Yes, Harley was building racing winning engines decades before that collaboration. One of the big things that Porsche did successfully first was had a liquid cooled engine. That was the main reason for the teaming up. No matter what, it runs extremely well, it’s dependable And a hell of a lot of fun to ride!
I wanted a VR1000 but did not live in Poland and have $50K back then! Not a fan of the 'Rod's seating position but love the engine and total build quality.
That street going version of VR1000 is virtually unobtainium these days, even if you've got the big bucks you'd have to convince a collector to sell it.

A Buell 1125R has a similar air box.The gas tank is a cover with a air box below.Remove the air box top cover. And replace the tank cover. The intake noise was so loud . The air box top was replaced after a few days.
I haven't tuned my 2017 Muscle yet, but modifying the airbox w/S.E. filter did give a noticeable bump in power. NGK Iridium plugs & hotter coils almost as much. Tab Performance slipons without baffles; no noticeable difference. But one inexpensive upgrade made a HUGE difference from mid-high rpm was a $15.00 Catch Can I bought off ebay (w/vacuum lines, zipties & special clamp) to bypass that hot oily gas away from the intake: I must have gained at least 5 hp! (plus my Bike runs smoother now) If I ever feel the need for more power after the tune; I'll go all out for a TTS Supercharger kit to put over 200 hp to the rear wheel.
Heh, heh! It's been so long I forgot that I already left a simular comment. But that one Catch-Can trick REALLY made a HUGE difference! A good reminder to myself though; I really need to get this Bike dynotuned to see just how much power I rolling with (I'd bet 130 rwhp with a Powervision tune).
What i did on Vrod cvo 2006: race ported heads, stage II cams, destroyer throttebody, destroyer injectors, 5bar fuel pump, 5bar fuel regulator, destroyer headbolts(13mm), screamin eagle racetuner(dynotuned by an expert), kn airfilter, removed top of airfilter box(topless), engine brace kit, slipper clutch, VH 2 into one exhaust , raise speedlimit from 9000 to 10500. That did pump the bike up from 125hp to 165hp, on rear wheel 138,5hp. there is a lot of power hidden in the screamin eagle 1250 motor , you just have to know where and how to release them. Important: USE stock velocitystacks drilled out to 58mm(make sure its smooth between VC and TB , short velocitystaks dont work well. So over to the cost in $$ , is it worth it in my book its not, but anyway if you who reads this still thinking about it Fitzgerald Motorsports in Ohio (Scott Fitzgerald) is the man to ask. He helped me out a lot with parts and good advice on the way.
Tell your dad to put on the 26th tooth forward pulley it made all the difference in slow speed handling even and acceleration was wonderful I enjoy your videos
Firzgerald performance in Greenville, Ohio custom makes 3 different stroker cranks and a few different cams for v-rods if you’re looking for performance above exhaust and air box.
My 2014 Vrod has V & H slip-on exhaust, Power Vision Tuner, and K & N filter. Once tuned, it runs great & sounds good(nice and loud- if its too loud, your too old! LoL) I thought about drilling large holes in the air box lid , but was not sure how that would work out. I would like to try the TAB performance V-Rod Super Intake, But the cost of entry is a little bit prohibitive .($498.95 ! ) But I love the way the motorcycle looks and sounds!
Question... When removing the air box cover, do you remove the sensor from the top cover and connected straight to the air sensor cable? I would assume yes, but just making sure. Thanks..
The power vision tuner is a pain in the ass. Apparently the spark coils in the Vrod give off so much electromagnetic feedback that they actually interfere with the tuning process causing the power vision to experience software errors and freezes. Needs to constantly be reset which is not something you want to do while riding. Maybe mine is just more sensitive than others but it seems to be a fairly common issue from things I’ve seen on forums. Edit: it is still usable and still works even with the freezing. Will just take you a bit longer. Just be prepared to pull over any time it freezes to reset the unit. When it does freeze the progress is at least not lost. After you reset the auto tune it will continue where it left off. I’m riding a 2016 Vrod Muscle.
@@jtpritch69 it’s a really dumb issue. from the research I’ve done If the power vision cable had better insulation it would mitigate the problem of outside electrical interference crashing the system.
@@jtpritch69 I personally have not tried it but I’ve read that some people have had some luck putting shielding over the wire to block out some of the feedback from the spark coils.
Glad it was helpful! Yeah unless you go with a two into one and a tune with topless air box you won't get much. Slip ons make a decent gain and get some great sound with a tune.
Thank you! That's exactly what were seeing now, with the Revolution Max being more compact and making more power with variable valve timing it's the future.
That's the setup we've done on my dad's 2012 Nightrod, topless box and 2 into 1. We tuned it with the PowerVison and used the tune we got from Fuel Moto, did some autotunes on the narrow band. Map works pretty well but it could always be better, curious to hear what that wideband tune does for your bike!
@@GixxerFoo yeah, I've been a bit lazy and haven't got around to it yet. Will be tuning the TC this way also. I will need to pull the cam chest out of TC first, to see what cams are installed, so FM can send me a base map.
My 1250 has a full Akropovic system, k&n, and screaming eagle tune but gets bloody hot. Will definitely try removing the air box. Great tip. By the way, a turbo or a supercharger will add mad hp 💪🏼
that front header on the akra is way to close to the front peg tho xD i changed mine to vance and hines, it doesnt have that beauty bend on the front pipe like akra does but you wont burn yourself :D

I just purchased a 2004 Vrod and it's awesome! I am somewhat concerned with lack of upgrade support. My biggest issue is a reduced reach or mid's. Looks like I'm gonna be spending a bit of money getting the bike comfortable
Like I said last week I don't know a lot about VRods but anything that says screamin eagle on it is gonna be mild on the other hand zippers performance had big bore kits 1340 cc & red shift cams I'm sure the would grind you a cam & there's always Wiesco to resleave your cyclinders for 1340 motor ! There's always a way to go fast ! By the way did you look up the VRod Street Rod ? Probably the coolest VRod HD ever made !
I have a German made exhaust that is wonderful. I'm not worried about speed so any bike I've ridden seems fine in that regard but I do like to hear it.
The German made exhaust work great on the Vrod, they are popular over seas. Vrod doesn't need more power but the exhaust note sounds good and the power is a bonus!
@@GixxerFoo I listened to many exhausts online and the one I bought and the Fitzgerald sounded best to me although I did like the V&H two into one too.
I’ve got a 03 vrod with bassani 2 into 1 exhaust baffle in with a tuner stock air filter. It made 110whp. I want to take the baffle out with air box mod and retune.
110 at the wheel is really good! Just keep in mind taking the baffle out and running it open will knock down your low and mid range a bit but it will peak you on the top end. You may not feel it but it would show up on the dyno, just make sure you retune after you make any mods.
@@GixxerFoo I found that out the hard way lol I pulled the baffle out and rode it afew miles and it seemed to run good until the computer figured out sumthing was off. After that it ran like shit. I put the baffle back in and it runs back fine again. It sounds so good thou with the baffle out! It ran very good from a 30 kick with the baffle out.
@@GixxerFoo I've been running the Cobra tuner, but I think that it's time for me to step up to a better tool. I'm leaning towards the PowerVision, but I won't be doing cams, so I don't know if a simpler tuner would be suffficient. What tuner do you recommend?
Gixxer.... Great show.... Now lets get on all the new toys available for the 2021 114 m8..... Tunes are out finally..... Mines a fbxxs street bob pearl white and black.power vision killed it. And whats the best 2 in 1 pipes. S & S. Vance. Freedom pipes. Thunder headers. Ect.
Lol you spend enough money just buying a new one at the time I'd just leave it alone for awhile. Thanks for the info! Always informative information! 👍
Thank you! Yeah they were about 18 grand the last model year in 2017, they weren't cheap just like anything else Harley. At least for that kind of money you got some serious power without having to buy some performance parts.
@Peter Angles pffft 😆 chill man, he might've been using voice-to-text and I'm not sure Hooked on Phonics would help with words that sound the same but are spelled differently. Besides, he gave us a clever hack and that's your takeaway?
How do they handle? My 01 v-max was a zipper to 100MPH but squirrely above that. My KZ 1000 was not as fast but changed lanes & stopped well. Wish I still had it.
You could cut the baffles out for more sound but you won't see any real performance benefits. I would leave the top on if you're going to go that route without a tune. You'll likely be hearing decel popping without a tune which would be worse with the air box topless.
As a Buell rider all I have to say is "The popping is the best part!" Nothing like running up behind some poor skiddish 4banger that has to slow waaaay down just to drop into a turn, then gently rolls through and out of the corner careful not to high side. While you muscle your way in, rear end dancing, exhaust poping, drag a bit of peg, and roll onto it hard to let that V-twin traction do its flat track magic. :-D What popping?
My dad has a 2012 Nightrod I tuned and dialed in for him and we argue about this all the time. The newer Sportster S is lighter, has traction control and lays down the power even though the horsepower is the same on paper the Sportster S produces way more torque. But for the money you can get a Vrod for these days I feel you get a lot more bike if you don't care about electronics and not only that the Vrod is comfortable.
Hey, 2003 vrod anniversary my clutch feels very weak. I have to pull the clutch all the way in for it to work. What do you suggest & if replacing it is a must which is the best clutch to replace it with?
How many miles you got on it? Might try servicing your master cylinder and changing fluid first, gonna want to do it anyhow if you replace the clutch. There's the Harley SE clutch set or you can check out Revzilla for the Barnett kit, both are really solid and about the same price. Don't want to go cheap on the clutch and have to redo it again.
From my brief experience riding a VRod Muscle I think that the stock setup had plenty of power for my taste. I do think that it could have used a little more torque. Happy Thanksgiving to you as well.
These things loved to rev……..the lower torque was no issue. Rev the piss out of it. It will do 7500 rpm all day at 110 degrees outside and not break a sweat. I loaded mine with a crap ton of gear strapped all over it, with full saddle bags that I made. Passing power on 2 lane roads was abundant. I don’t have my vrod anymore……but that engine was great. When you hit 5000 rpm things started happening quick! My only mod was a set of Vance and Hines power shots with a power commander and a tune. Left the top on and the tuners dyno only went to 7500 rpm…….still hit 115 hp at the rear wheel with 1500 more rpm to go! 1130 engine.
Hi there GixxerFoo - you mentioned Power Vision Tune, is that a module? I have a 2012 V-Rod Muscle w/Vance & Hines exhaust. I haven't done the AirBox topless yet but was looking the the TAB Performance MotoHooligan Super Intake for a custom look. Does that kill my gains?
Thundermax hands down if you can swing the extra cash, I would for sure go that route with your exhaust if it's got the bungs that support the wide band sensors.
You know I have looked around and never found any information on the transmission gearing. I have a 2003 V-rod and was wondering if it would be possible to lower the first gear and raise the fifth gear ratio. The local shop that did the dyno tune had recommended that I install the lower toothed 04 output pulley before installing the air filter and bubs (Reinhart) exhaust. Well, that's been done a long time ago. I was wondering If that is possible? I'd love to put the original pully back and change 1 to lower and 5th to a higher ratio. They have lots of Horsepower and enough torque at the higher end. It just seems like I'm being waist full at 65-90 mph cruising along. So, what's your thoughts is it possible and how involved and expensive would this be. I've always imagined if it were easy that is what Harley would have done in 2004 instead of increasing the teeth in the output sprocket.
It would be very expensive to get into the transmission on a Vrod with it being unitized. You would be a lot better off by changing the pullies, maybe go up a tooth or two on the back for more low end. You'll sacrifice some top end but if you're not concerned about the top end you'll get a lot more low torque much faster.
All i envision with the top of the air box removed is dust giong down the intakes and reduced engine life ? I like the thought of a 6 hp gain but i would still worry ?
I just bought my 2012 harley-davidson v-rod muscle last week, it has Vance and Hines slipons, a power commander V EFI tuner...I will need to see if it is toppless... if it's not, do I upgrade the filter or leave it stock? Since this is my first Harley-davidson ever and I am really excited about this
A dyno tune is very accurate and they are able to fine tune you're throttle positions at every given rpm. It's like getting a pair of shoes custom made for your feet versus just grabbing some off the shelf.
Powervision tune takes away the rev limiter function so I used a pc 5 and topless with the high flow with the screamin eagle stock exhaust. For an 1130 it hauled ass 😊
The Vrod is my dad's bike with Tab Slip Ons and a K&N air filter, I ordered his Power Vison from Fuel Moto and told them what the bike had done. They loaded their maps for that setup and it was honestly so perfect on the bike I didn't mess with auto tuning or any changes for fear of going backwards.
Hello guys hope all is well... i have a 2007 night rod with a bassani 2 into 1 exhaust and a bmc filter Please answer my questions for feedback🙏🏻 Is it okay to use the bike without the power vision or dyno tune for reliability in the meantime? For the airbox is it better to have it cut to be narrower or remove it (as ive been told dust comes into the engine when removed ).Thank you,
I'm rather new modifying/tuning vehicles/bikes. I have a nightrod special, 1250cc, and put the V&H Performance exhaust on it. You're right, I do get some decel pop when I'm engine breaking from high revs. I still have stock air though. When it comes to air intake/tuner, what recommendations do you have? You mentioned powervision tuners, are there different models I should be watching out for?
The Power Vision is the best one out there other than a Thunder Max for the Vrod. For the Vrod a K&N air filter in the air box and a Power Vision is about the best it gets for the Vrod. You can run the air box topless and pick up some more power there. Best deal on a Power Vision out there is Fuel Moto, you tell them your setup on the bike when you order and they preload a map based on your specs to the unit. All you have to do is flash it and you're good to go, maybe run some auto tune sessions to dial it in if need be.
I purchased a 2014 VRod muscle, I love everything about it, I which though the sound would be deeper, not loud, just deeper. Any advice on what I could do? Thank you
With a bolt in 585 I would guestimate being conservative 90 to 95 horsepower and around 110 on the torque. That's a conservative estimate, with a good dyno tune I wouldn't be surprised if it broke 100 horsepower.

That's one of the quickest way to spend 5 grand, but if you think about it you spend that much getting into the motor. A turbo is basically bolt on and you get as much if not more power and reliably too.
You might be able to get away with it, every motor is different so it may run great or it may start popping on decel. It for sure wouldn't hurt to retune it, but you'd be splitting hairs for 500 bucks and 5 horsepower.
Do you think a set of cams is worth the money or just exhaust and tuner is more than enough?
Exhaust, tuner AND pulley gearing upgrade. Doing a pulley upgrade like 2 teeth up on rear and 2 teeth down on front keeps the wheel in the same spot, gives incredible bang for buck and you don't have to enter the engine. Sure it means a few more rpm, but the torque increase is awesome. This goes for ANY bike.
HD went tall on the M8 softails for emissions. 2.79 final drive ratio. Next rear tire change go to a plus 4 ie 70 tooth pulley. This changes your final drive ratio to 3.00-1.
Damn that's one hell of a Vrod setup! My dad runs Nightrod, he absolutely loves it, running 166 horse that's some Destroyer power for the street!
You got some the best content and all your doing is talking, showing graphs. Your awesome. Thank you
I am all about the information and putting it in one place so you don't have to dig all over the place to find it.
You are so right Gixxer, I Have owned 4 V-Rats and best setup was: Thunderheader, open airbox with K&N filter and a Powercomander programmer.
It doesn't get any better than a Thunderheader, that is one hell of an exhaust.
That's what I have on mine! Sounds knawrly also
Loved my VROD and as you say they need very little to make them go very well.
Thank you brother !! I think you are the best !!! Never had any bad info from you !!!! Some of these other guys don't have a glue. Thank you !!!! .
I appreciate that! Thank you for supporting us all over here on the channel!
How about removing the air box lid putting k&n with no tune stock exhaust? Ok with no tuner?
It’s like the old KZ1000s, always ditched the stock air box and put on the K&N cones. Thank you for another informative video
Exactly! Even my dad's 1985 900 Eliminator had the K&N pods on the carbs!
I have an ‘07 v-rod VRSCAW. I did the topless mod w/h a K&N and drilled some holes in the stock exhaust to open it up. Sounds great and gave me a little boost. Tuner is my next step. New spark plugs made a big deal too!
You get a good tuner on there and it will be a whole new ball game on that bike!
You can always get your Vrod bored out to a 1480cc with Fitzgerald Motorsport 😈. I LOVE the Vrod content! Great video as always!
Thanks! 👍 That's a monster setup they have with that 1480, you can some serious power out of the Vrod. The motors are very stout so you really don't have anything to worry about with them.
Amazing video. I am picking up a vrod with an akrapovic exhaust and a tuner after watching this
I was stuck deciding which one to choose. This video made it obvious the two to 1 exhaust with a tuner is the one
You can't beat a two into one for a Vrod, they run really good with those!
Another trick concerning the airbox mod (besides a Screaming Eagle air filter), I did more than just losing the top: I cut & trimmed the lower to the filter lip, relocated the ATI sensor to the filter lid, made a battery terminal quick release (simular to forklifts), and replaced the 10 side cover screws (Muscle) with quick release pins and JB Welded brass collors in the airbox cover to solve the 20 minute
...hassle with getting to the front spark plug. Now it only takes me 2 minutes WITHOUT tools.
Actually, it was a "20 minute hassle" the first time with the stock airbox: More like 8 to 10 minutes (with 4 different tools) after that.

Why would you want to go back to stock? Those are some really solid numbers!
They for sure made no compromises when it came to power in the stock form!
@@GixxerFoo I do some LD riding and after a while the loud exhaust can work on you even with ear plugs. Also, I lost 5-6 MPG.
Some Porsche input???
A little more than some
@@sparky586bh let me guess, you have Porsche badges on your V Rod?

You for sure have to pair with a good exhaust system, that can be as much as 10 horse swing making or breaking your power!
Got a '14 Night Rod....I have never gone topless-gonna try it next summer. I'll take the 6hp upgrade
A Fitzgerald 26 Tooth front Sprocket/Pulley will match those upgrades with a LOT of low end UMPH!
A Buell 1125R has a similar air box.The gas tank is a cover with a air box below.Remove the air box top cover. And replace the tank cover. The intake noise was so loud . The air box top was replaced after a few days.
That's true you will have some more intake noise, but it's a give and take when it comes to making horsepower.
(plus my Bike runs smoother now)
If I ever feel the need for more power after the tune; I'll go all out for a TTS Supercharger kit to put over 200 hp to the rear wheel.
Great simple stuff - I have a 1250 2008 knight Rod Special - looking or some fun power upgrades and tuner..
That bike has got to be a monster, basically a street legal destroyer spec bike!
I just added H/C , clutch basket, and getting parts together for an S/C for next year. Also looking to add cf wheels after all is done.
Thanks that topless airbox trick works great with the dynojet tune KN filter TAB slipons running great!
Tell your dad to put on the 26th tooth forward pulley it made all the difference in slow speed handling even and acceleration was wonderful I enjoy your videos
I thought the 1130cc V-Rods were faster than the 1250cc units ! Removing the injectoymr cover was the absolute first thing I did on my 2007 V-Rod
Injector air cleaner cover removal !
Firzgerald performance in Greenville, Ohio custom makes 3 different stroker cranks and a few different cams for v-rods if you’re looking for performance above exhaust and air box.
That's when you're ready to get serious and really get some pull you off the back power.
I would like to try the TAB performance V-Rod Super Intake, But the cost of entry is a little bit prohibitive .($498.95 ! )
But I love the way the motorcycle looks and sounds!
The intakes work pretty well but just running a topless air box makes a big difference!
I want that too, but $500, whoa! Gotta save up.
I want another vrod. I let my vrod go like a fool. They are great bikes. Love you videos
I have the same exact issue with my 2016 VROD and Power Vision tuner. It's a real pain, and it happens every time I ride.
Awesome video chock full of awesome information. Plan to get a tune and two slip ons. Damn, you really know your stuff. Thank you.
Thank you, I appreciate it! You for sure want to get a tune on these bikes with those slipons.
Great Video, Thanks for the incite, seems like a waste to do all that time/work/money for little to no result.
Glad it was helpful! Yeah unless you go with a two into one and a tune with topless air box you won't get much. Slip ons make a decent gain and get some great sound with a tune.
i wished they used this engine in other designs myself. though in a way we are seeing features of it now. good vid
Thank you! That's exactly what were seeing now, with the Revolution Max being more compact and making more power with variable valve timing it's the future.
I have 2:1V&H & topless, have the SEPST, but recently picked up a PV with wideband O2. Yet to swap it in and do some autotunes ..
That's the setup we've done on my dad's 2012 Nightrod, topless box and 2 into 1. We tuned it with the PowerVison and used the tune we got from Fuel Moto, did some autotunes on the narrow band. @@GixxerFoo yeah, I've been a bit lazy and haven't got around to it yet. Will be tuning the TC this way also.

If I just remove the top of the air box without using a tune , does this affect the air fuel mixture?

Like your thinking...whereabouts do you re-locate the sensor attached to the top plastic cover...can you just tie it down nearabouts to the airfilter?
My 1250 has a full Akropovic system, k&n, and screaming eagle tune but gets bloody hot. Will definitely try removing the air box. Great tip. By the way, a turbo or a supercharger will add mad hp 💪🏼
that front header on the akra is way to close to the front peg tho xD i changed mine to vance and hines, it doesnt have that beauty bend on the front pipe like akra does but you wont burn yourself :D
I think the simple way is best. Alot of cash for 6 horse. And awesome tip with the air box. Ride safe.

Yes l did, l forgot about that model, l thought you meant the 750 lol. That Vrod is awesome with the mids and additional ground clearance.
What exhaust is that?
@@EuroVrod It is called speed demon by rod squad. The Fitzgerald company has I think two for but one is called cut throat.
How do you just “ditch” the top of the airborne top? Doesn’t a sensor plug in to it?
You don't have to use it, it will run just fine without it.
Looks like I need to research the topless conversion. Thanks!
It makes a big difference, it's pretty noticeable when you get some air to the motor!
Ect.

I loved my 2008 V Rod. It had a two into one exhaust, and a tuner. Fast as hell, every time I road it I would hit 145mph, sold it in 2017.
They are pretty fast for sure! Hard to hang on with the forward controls at those speeds!
@Peter Angles pffft 😆 chill man, he might've been using voice-to-text and I'm not sure Hooked on Phonics would help with words that sound the same but are spelled differently. Besides, he gave us a clever hack and that's your takeaway?
@Peter Angles last place i thaught id find grammar nazis
How do they handle? My 01 v-max was a zipper to 100MPH but squirrely above that. My KZ 1000 was not as fast but changed lanes & stopped well. Wish I still had it.
Can the baffles be cut out on a 2012 V Rod and go topless or do I need to add a tuner also?
You could cut the baffles out for more sound but you won't see any real performance benefits. I would leave the top on if you're going to go that route without a tune. You'll likely be hearing decel popping without a tune which would be worse with the air box topless.
Your synopsis is correct good man! KUDO'S on your content!
How does it compare with the newer liquid cooled Harley-Davidson models?
My dad has a 2012 Nightrod I tuned and dialed in for him and we argue about this all the time. The newer Sportster S is lighter, has traction control and lays down the power even though the horsepower is the same on paper the Sportster S produces way more torque. But for the money you can get a Vrod for these days I feel you get a lot more bike if you don't care about electronics and not only that the Vrod is comfortable.
Thanks for another honest and helpful V Rod video 👍🏻
My pleasure! Thank you for checking it out!
Thank you! Yeah those bikes were low on torque, mid to high 80's at the most. They made the horsepower though!
How bout an indepth look at the sportster s and how to get that 150+ HP or a comparison on the sporty and VROD
That's not a bad idea!
I have a 08 night rod special. Tuned topless airbox set a cams that’s it Dino that 132 hp I forget the actual torque I have to look.
I may have missed it in the video but what do i do with the air temp sensor once i remove the lid.
Good subject focus here. Very Good.
Thank you, I appreciate it!
Dynojet or thundermax ? for an 09 Night rod special with 2 in to 1 exhaust, K& N and running topless.
Thundermax hands down if you can swing the extra cash, I would for sure go that route with your exhaust if it's got the bungs that support the wide band sensors.
Excellent video....Quick question bro..would you run topless if you lived 8km down a gravel road?!?!.
The air cleaner seals all around the intake so you won't have to worry about that.
I just bought my 2012 harley-davidson v-rod muscle last week, it has Vance and Hines slipons, a power commander V EFI tuner...I will need to see if it is toppless... if it's not, do I upgrade the filter or leave it stock? Since this is my first Harley-davidson ever and I am really excited about this
You can leave the stock filter, it will still pull more air but it doesn't hurt to get a K&N.
Do you think a dyna tune would be more effective than a tuner (power vision/ power commander) thanks.
A dyno tune is very accurate and they are able to fine tune you're throttle positions at every given rpm. It's like getting a pair of shoes custom made for your feet versus just grabbing some off the shelf.
@@GixxerFoo I'm a little confused. So I have a power commander, do you still dyno tune that?
Powervision tune takes away the rev limiter function so I used a pc 5 and topless with the high flow with the screamin eagle stock exhaust.
For an 1130 it hauled ass 😊
Did I miss stock minis just the air box lids on either size?
You can leave that air box top of the 1130 and the 1250 and see some serious gain, it does make a difference.
What was the map you used and the parameters you did on power vision?
The Vrod is my dad's bike with Tab Slip Ons and a K&N air filter, I ordered his Power Vison from Fuel Moto and told them what the bike had done. They loaded their maps for that setup and it was honestly so perfect on the bike I didn't mess with auto tuning or any changes for fear of going backwards.
That's pretty much what I did also. But now I'm running topless. I just wanted to get an idea of how much more percentage of fuel should I add?
Hello guys hope all is well... i have a 2007 night rod with a bassani 2 into 1 exhaust and a bmc filter Please answer my questions for feedback🙏🏻
Is it okay to use the bike without the power vision or dyno tune for reliability in the meantime?
For the airbox is it better to have it cut to be narrower or remove it (as ive been told dust comes into the engine when removed ).Thank you,
I quickly found out, as most vrod owners found, that the number one thing was a 6th gear is needed because the bike screams for it.
How often do we have to a I just about
I'm rather new modifying/tuning vehicles/bikes.
Thank you
A nice set of slip on exhaust and a tune will help a lot with that. They are really quiet with the stock mufflers.
Gut the cool stock pipes of all insulation. Add a thunder monster weld in baffle...looks like a tiny hollow magnifying glass .
Excellent advice! Saved me money!
I love to hear that!
I want to go topless on my 10th anniversary edition... my question is, what did do with the ait sensor?
what do I do with the sensor built on the top of the cover ?
What kinda of hp would I get on 103ci with 58mm screaming eagle throttle body, thundermax tuner, 585 s&s cam and a set of true duals?
With a bolt in 585 I would guestimate being conservative 90 to 95 horsepower and around 110 on the torque. That's a conservative estimate, with a good dyno tune I wouldn't be surprised if it broke 100 horsepower.
🛑🛑 Great Video Gix!!💯👍
My Son-in-law has an 2005 CVO VRod (Emerald Green).
He did everything that you discussed to his bike, and yes; it runs strong.
The bike really gets noticed when we pull into “bike nights” with the “high reving sound” and the “ uniqueness” of those bikes. 💯👍
Great Content!!!
Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 😀👍!!
Thank you, I appreciate it! Damn you don't see the Emerald Green bikes around often in the CVO. I don't think I've seen one in person in that was any color other than the orange in the CVO.

Yes….I don’t think there were many produced. It seemed like the Red was the most prevalent.
People come to it as soon as he shuts it off😀👍💯

We pull in at bike nights….I’m on a CVO Ultra, One Son-in-law is on a CVO Street Glide, and the other son-in-law is on a CVO VRod😂💯.
They call us “The Three CVO’s”😂👍
I like the V-Rod. Always have.
It's an awesome bike! It may not be for everybody but they for sure won't disappoint.
I have a 2010 vrod muscle 1250. It's awesome!
That 1250 makes a big difference, the 1130 was pretty quick but that 1250 was the sweet spot on those Vrod engines.
Any experience with the tab motohooligan super intake,I installed one and like the oil catch system but it added a lot of valve noise and not sure about it,but getting 127 rwhp with Fitzgerald ground pounder/super intake and a tune,2012 nightrod special
Good video . Love them VRODS
I had a 2005 night rod. I loved that bike. Stick a turbo or blower and hold on
That's one of the quickest way to spend 5 grand, but if you think about it you spend that much getting into the motor. A turbo is basically bolt on and you get as much if not more power and reliably too.
Mine is a 2012 with Vance and Hines 2 into 1, k&n filter, and dynotuned by my local HD shop, if I take the filter box off, will it need re-tuned?
You might be able to get away with it, every motor is different so it may run great or it may start popping on decel. It for sure wouldn't hurt to retune it, but you'd be splitting hairs for 500 bucks and 5 horsepower.
@@GixxerFoo thanks man, gonna try it next nice day.
