This scam is very slick, and it takes a ballsy conman to pull it off. The would be buyer is shown a car that does not belong to him. The actual owner believes he letting an appraiser look over the car - after he goes into the garage. So in the end the buyer hands over the cash to the scammer and the owner is unaware of what has happened between the two. The only red flag here is a low, low price on the vehicle.
I don’t hand over cash until I get the title in hand, verify the VIN against the title, get the sellers ID and take immediate possession of the car.. why would you do anything else?
You're trying to tell us that this scammer pulled this off with his victim right there at the end of the driveway? I guess I'm not understanding how anybody could possibly fall for this. No way in ever living hell I'm giving somebody that kind of money and not going with them or until I have proof that I will take ownership. Good grief...
You, the buyer, will show at my place with cash, cashier check or be ready to wire transfer during banking hours! Unless cash we will go to my bank and when the money is IN my account, only then can you take the car! NO OTHER OPTIONS! Bought and sold many this way
It sounds like the cop at 2:13 was stating things incorrectly. He said there were 2 suspects. It seems there was only one suspect and 1 victim. The victim paid $14000 to the suspect for a car the suspect didn't own. The other assumed victim the cop talked about is Howard, he owned the car, but he didn't sell the car so he was not a victim of theft, but just a lie.
The timing had to be perfect. The Russian guy had to ask the owner if he would sell it, and the owner had to agree. Then the owner would show the Russian the car just as the target arrived. Then the target gives the Russian the cash, goes up to the car and the owner pops the hood for him, starts it up and all. The the Target asks for the keys and the owner is like "Wha???? Weren't you here to appraise the car?"
@@CP-pb3pj It's only worth what the owner is willing to let it go for, and what the buyer is willing to pay. It's abundantly clear that this owner was willing to let it go for the $14k.
Is that x Ca at worth “a helm of a lot more than $14k”.. really? It’s got wrong body parts , shitty paint, crappy wheels.. I’d say 14k is about right..
1 man sold the other man the car but that man didn't own the car It was bad and switch and switch and bait it's very confusing what a stupid news story
This hearts me cuz I buy and sell classics car and if I see one I stop and talk them to see if they want to sell I’ve got lot cars doing that it just makes tuffer for some like 😢 I hope they catch dirt bags get what they deserve
How are so many people confused in the comments? The scammer acted like he wanted to buy the car from the real owner. Told the owner that the other guy was an appraiser, when in reality the "appraiser" was the one being scammed of his hard earned cash by the scammer. The guy that got scammed is waiting with the actual owner like an idiot after handing over $14,000 and not getting the pink slip or talking to the actual owner. 😢
It's 2023, and people are still getting scammed on Craigslist... Ouch.
Social engineering is a skill in itself.
I stopped using Craigslist when a buyer asked to meet after 9pm, no response when I put the meet up address as the police station.
@@S2KV Bro I've used craigslist for years and never been scammed
@@nonyabizz3533same
yabizz3533 same, just use common sense and youll be fine
Always ask for pink slip. Show proof before you hand over the cash. You have to admit he is a good scammer. Robbed the victim without violence or gun.
Wait. Dude gave somebody $14k for a car they never drove away in??? 🤔
I don't get it either. I'm glad I'm not the only one confused about this story.

Gotta hand it to the thief. That was smart, cunning and bossy.

Exactly!
DOJ isnt worried about these criminals theyre too busy reading what youre posting for comments they dont approve!
It wasn't until I read your comment that I understood the scam. This story was hard to follow.
There still posting on housing as well trying to use a fake credit check for your info

I don't get it. Why did Howard give the man 14K instead of getting 14K for the car?
Ohhh I get it. Howard didn't sell the car, the man sold the man the car and then the man never returned again.
Lmao 15k for a screenshot of a pink slip
Pretty smart.
This is why I will never buy a car on Craigslist.
Good, more deals for me :)
I'm so confused
Who in the world would buy that old car.. Servers him right lol
I think we were the ones scammed for views.
Not worth more than 14k sorry 😐
40 years ago that was a 1000 dollar car
I agree.......still looks pretty rough, despite the mechanical upgrades.
Its no show car, but its worth more than $14K.

If the seller wanted $14k, then yes you are correct and have a point.
Good scam!!
You deserve to be scammed if you’re using Craigslist in 2023 💀
It’s 2023 and people are still buying classics
Russians
Definitely.
Is it any wonder why local callers never get answered. Scammers wait for buyers from across states to take bait.
Say what now? Very confusing. Who was who? Who did what to who? The appraiser wasn't the appraiser but the buyer??? Very poorly edited. I'm confused.
That’s a mark of laziness. Actually, it’s an ADMISSION of laziness. The news anchors cannot be bothered to follow a plot.
Why would you buy a car on Craigslist especially if you know nothing about cars. We have to stop trusting people because they look like a nice person.
Slick move
That's why I quit using Craigslist completely. Too many flakes and dishonest people.
Is that x Ca at worth “a helm of a lot more than $14k”.. really? It’s got wrong body parts , shitty paint, crappy wheels.. I’d say 14k is about right..
I'd say if you legit bought that heap for $14k you got robbed.
Just almost got scam!!!! Did make the mistake of giving them my address. Big mistake!! Never give no one personal information!!!
This story is confusing.
That's for sure!
Nah you're just slow
