just came across this creator. The reason that the scammer askes if you have access to FB marketplace is because of how online subscriptions work for like FB work poor countries like Nigeria are charged by SUBSCRIPTION, not service. So for example, FB is subscription, and they are charged a weekly access or data charge to those subscriptions. Whatsapp is usually free cause it is linked in with google or something like that. This is why they (scammers) always want you to switch to whatsapp. That and it hacked on the reg.

How does the scam work if the victim can't physically go inside the property? Nobody would go through with a real estate deal if they don't have access to where they're going to be living.

    • @Spaghatee

@@dannydaw59 they can by using the rently app. If the home is already posted on there then the scammer can send the link for the client to view the home themselves without anyone else present. I’ve used it a couple times for rental clients, and it’s a super simple process. You wouldn’t think it happens, but there are a lot of people that are desperate for a home and will send the “deposit” without even thinking twice or even seeing the home.

Thanks for posting this. I worked as a leasing agent for homes 10 years ago and this is what we ran into a lot. Sometimes these scammers would say they are doctors who left the country on a mission trip, were in an accident and seeking medical help somewhere else, they need someone to just take care of their house temporarily, etc. They often would have an excuse of why they are no longer using a realtor and sometimes will tell people to ignore the lock box on the door or just cut it off. I have even ran into somebody who sent a large security deposit and first months rent to a scammer and we’re living in one of our houses that we were getting ready to do construction on. We couldn’t get their money back, but we gave them some money to help them out.
These guys are jerks and will always try and make it quick buck. I always tell renters to never give money to anyone they have not met in person. There are also ways to check to make sure who is actually the owner of the home.

Wow. I was scammed years ago with the same exact scenario. Me and the wife contacted the ad, the "owner" was looking to rent the place out, said he was a truck driver and on the road, gave us the code to look at the place, and came to an agreement we wanted it. Once again he was " on the road" and we only dealt with him on text. Lesson learned later of course BUT never go forward if you never meet the person. We reluctantly paid the deposit and after contact went dead afterwards. Again i was in a bad spot at the time and thought nothing of it, but lost out, but recovered. So in conclusion thank you for going after these scammers, sometimes a minor win in justice is served by individuals as yourself.

There are a number of such media reports, with some variations on how the scams were done!
Some senior home owners were on a vacation or in a hospital, etc when someone faked their house Deeds or these were obtained illegally, and sold their homes underneath them!! Long court cases!
The Govt offices were also implicated in not safeguarding the Deeds info, etc, giving the house rights to the scammers! It was scary to read!

Scams are like a never ending bag of rotten treats, throw one, the next shows up. Nigeria and other countries surely have legal, legit job these scammers could work, even with a low/er income, but they're too lazy to do it. Their excuses for scamming are lame and pathetic. If ill and disabled people can work, so can they. Also shame on the willing mules around the world, greed and money hunger cloud people's minds and hearts. As usual, the scambaiting community doing a service for everyone. Wishing you a Happy New Year, Mr. Ben!

Yes, but work is tiring. These countries get money, aid, training, you name it, from the developed world but, as soon as the helpers are gone, they go back to being unproductive and scamming. Then they'll blame us all for their misery.

Things aren't done in a helpful way, free money is not a good idea. Instead, teach them useful things, like crafting, repairing, cooking, etc. Things to get them started, to enable them to access basic professions, like working in factories, even if it's not a great work to do due to ethics and payments in poor countries, it is a start, better than nothing. But that's just my thought on this.

@@Drakkar2992 They are done in a helpful way. Here one of many examples: my husband was in an African country to protect the people for the aid-organisation, who were working there for one year. Showed them everything, built them wells, homes, schools, infrastructure. Gave them machines for agriculture and other things and trained them up. As soon as the aid-organisation left, these people built themselves huts again and asked aid-organisations for money. I would NEVER spent another penny into anything to do with Africa.

@@libelle8124 I guess it's a mentality thing then, which is really hard to change. Close to where i live, there was a fund raiser made by some ngo's for people in Africa, hence why i thought that it was simply about free money. A noble thing on your husband's part to go there and help.

So my mom is elderly and called me one day frantic about some will my grandfather had left her. Of course at first I was more than happy for her since it was a decent amount. Everything seemed legit until she started asking me to take her to the store to get gift cards. Mind you she don't even know what they are . That was the first red flag. l asked her what she would possibly need an Apple gift card if one she don't know what they are for and 2 she don't own anything Apple! She proceeded to tell me that her "lawyer " needs them to process a payment for paperwork she needs done. Regardless of me telling her it's a scam she won't believe me! Now they sent her some paper work saying he signed this will in 2022 . Mind you my grandfather passed back in 2010 so how could he sign this document !! Well she won't believe me so if anyone could help me scare this scammer please
