I would never buy from someone far away without a physical verification and a paper trail of receipts for the item.
The Facebook scam I tend to get the most where I am, is where they set up fake accounts of real people, and send out Friend requests to all the real person's friends, hoping to draw them into some get-rich-quick scheme. For this reason, nowadays when I get a Friend request from someone I'm already Friends with, I check up with the real person to see if the request was genuine. If - as is most often the case - it wasn't genuine, I proceed to tell the perpetrator exactly what I think of them, no holds barred. Omg that was too funny! Well played 😂😂😂 There's currently another common scam going about on FB marketplace involving PS5's. The body of the text is something along the lines of "giving away my sons PS5. He sadly passed away and I cannot bare looking at it. Want to give it away to bring someone else joy" Then when you ask where they're from, they're miles from the local area of which it was advertised. They "know" someone who can ship it at a fee etc etc (you know the rest)
Those "passing away of a ....." been on OfferUp, Craig and Marketplace for a while now, but hopefully most are deterred by very bad grammar and hard to understand English, they also use certain keywords that people from US won't use. It involves both the selling and buying side and all I can suggest is whenever it looks to good to be true then just walk away and don't let greed give you a hope that you're getting a deal of a lifetime.
Whenever someone says "on your name" it's a scam. We just don't talk like that in the US, in general. I've seen other scams where they say the IRS has a fraud or something "on your name," or there's a warrant "on your name."
A friend's fb page had that same message posted on it, more than once. Both of her parents are deceased & I knew this was off. I messaged her privately to warn her. I also commented about this being a scam multiple times under the post. Many ppl were trying to be helpful to her & asking about items. Thanks for your detective work!
Our local community group gets these all the time from "new" members. Thankfully the moderators seem to get on there fairly quickly and take them down. Scummy scammers. Ugh!
I love messing with scammer with the help of my students. Sometimes we call the scammers during down time in class and they listen to the calls on speakers. I let the scammer think they are about to get a payout when, on cue, the kids yell "Gotch you!" and we hang up on them. My kids love you videos. We watch them during lunch some times.
From an Admin on a FB group: If you are ever concerned about someone being a scammer; get them to send you a video saying your name and showing what you are buying.
@koreyb I only bother with listing items with more than $50 value. Everything else, I donate. Not worth the effort to list low value items. The things I do list always sell within a month.
I got scammed on Facebook Marketplace recently, and Facebook could not possibly have cared less. They are definitely a huge part of the problem, since they don't make any effort to shut scammers down (or even let you report it when you have definitely been scammed).
@@joshua.harazin you sound as out of whack as the scammers do. What they're doing is wrong but some people steal because they're uneducated or unable to provide for their families.
Love your work, keep it up! I see these sort of scams ALL the time and am constantly dealing with friends and family members who fall for them, one friend was scammed out of $500. I told him it was a scam as soon as he showed me the listing. Now I'm always getting asked, "Is this a scam?" and my reply is always YES!. I always report them, but Facebook very rarely does anything about them and instead tells me there's nothing wrong and the account or listing was not removed....
I've been in the IT and security industry a long time.. and appreciate what you're doing and the style in which you're doing it. I've also watched a plethora of other scam-baiter creators and your style takes the cake! Thanks for sharing!
I’ll add to this video; we were looking at an item that was priced realistically, but would have been about an hour’s drive. The seller provided an address, but then wanted a deposit because of so many inquiries. When they provided the link (Venmo) it wasn’t their name, and when asked, said it was their sister. We looked further into the accounts (many Venmo purchases are public) and the seller’s Facebook account was brand new, and the Venmo account had limited transactions. The address provided seemed to be an actual address We passed on the item and reported the Marketplace listing; similar adds with the same photos and information started showing up everywhere. Our guess is there are a lot of people who send a deposit: and had the accounts been set up a little better, we might have been fooled, too. That all said, cash is king in Facebook marketplace if you are going to buy in person-and a deposit should never be necessary.
This was a great video. Well played. I've seen so many of those posts on local FB pages here in Australia. I know they are scams but so many fall for them.

Omg this exact scam happened to my mom a few weeks ago. It was EXACTLY identical to this one. She tried to get a blender from a guy (same scam) and when she asked to pick it up he said “ohh I can’t I’m going to Walmart right now” and tried to get her to pay advance. I warned her it was probably a scammer and luckily she didn’t fall for it

Thank you, Pleasant, for this video. It's outstanding & I'll be sharing it. But there should be a way social media platforms could "look" for posts like the one in the video & block them all. Shame on them for allowing scammers to flourish on social media.
Your creativity never stops, lol! I love it when you put together an act that confuses the heck out of scammers, like that other time you took that job as a real estate advertising manager and pretended to send money to “yourself”
This happened to me, but with a car for sale. I was about to go look at it, and when I asked for address, thdy wanted deposit before seeing it, because they felt “unsafe” and someone tried to rob “steal the car!😂” the day before. So they wanted to make sure I’m serious. I told them I can’t leave a deposit because I don’t even know if I want the car until I see it. Even told them I will meet them at Public place or police station. They kept insisting on deposit, saying they would refund instantly if I didn’t like, plus interest/inconvenience fee, lmao!!🤣
Can't tell from area codes where cell phone calls originate in the US.. My golfing buddy's cell phone has an Ohio area code but lives in AZ. Landline calls however, are tied to actual area locations. But when I receive a phone call, I don't know if it's cell or landline. But I do know it's a scammer by the long delay between my "Hello", a delay, then a short "beep" then another delay until the other party answers with a very heavy accent. That's an indication that their autodialer is making the call.
It's all so messed up; I'm legitimately trying to sell crap from my deceased parents' house and all I get are scammers who want to overpay with a check then insist their "picker" will come get it but first I have to send them the 'extra' money from the check. You can't win either way :
These people selling stuff... it's from hacked profiles. I've seen a bunch of friends get their profiles hacked and the profiles turn into these "For Sale" type posts. It's sad because my friends have lost their accounts because of these scumbags.

Yea I was selling a Graphics Card for a computer and someone asked me to send it to them before payment and I asked the person does Amazon send you a product before recieving a payment and they got all angry at me and told me Im not Amazon lol
Happened to me when I tried to sell my macbook, so annoying
@@RedSliceGaming34lmao yeah they asked me if they can give me a check then I ship it to them and I’m like nah bro, cash only 😂
@@RedSliceGaming34 Your experience reminds me to not even bother responding to buyers who ask for fake arrangements. I buy from Craigslist and will only consider sellers who state "cash (money order, etc.) local buyers only--meet in a public place. I would never buy from someone far away without a physical verification and a paper trail of receipts for the item.
That’s crazy lol, I did not know about that.
The annoying part is, Facebook had the cheek to reprimand me for telling thieving bar stewards the truth about themselves. I don't get it: I'M being reprimanded for doing exactly what Facebook SHOULD be doing!?!?
FB just seems to add so many more layers of complication to people's lives these days. O_o
Yes,I've gotten a few of those. I knew the person was fake when they were telling me about some government program thing where they got 200 grand they don't have to pay back.
This is why I’m too skeptical to buy ANYTHING from Facebook, especially since I’ve sadly been scammed myself

I’ve bought off marketplace, and buy/sell groups a bunch with no issues, but I won’t buy the item if I can’t pay in cash, or e transfer the money AFTER arriving and seeing the item
I'm sorry to hear this. Usually the scam involves money paid prior to verifying the item in person. Did you pay up front? Again, sorry to hear this.
Wow! Your dedication is amazing! I’ve bought things off FBMP, and come across plenty of scammers. They always want money in advance! I always say I’m paying cash and don’t have any of their cash apps. The legit sellers are willing to work with you. I had one lady even leave an antique vase on her porch behind a pallet, trusting I’d leave the payment. I did, and it was all good.
Thanks for teaching us new insults in Nigerian! Very useful in dealing with scammers!😊And thanks for all the work you do in educating us on these scams.
Omg that was too funny! Well played 😂😂😂
There's currently another common scam going about on FB marketplace involving PS5's.
Maybe that's the next one!
@@PleasantGreen Do you not realise what you are selling is a scam or just dont care?
Those "passing away of a ....." been on OfferUp, Craig and Marketplace for a while now, but hopefully most are deterred by very bad grammar and hard to understand English, they also use certain keywords that people from US won't use. It involves both the selling and buying side and all I can suggest is whenever it looks to good to be true then just walk away and don't let greed give you a hope that you're getting a deal of a lifetime.
@@danquaylesitsspeltpotatoe8307 How I don't get
Please explain 🙏
@@danquaylesitsspeltpotatoe8307 Confused too
Whenever someone says "on your name" it's a scam. We just don't talk like that in the US, in general. I've seen other scams where they say the IRS has a fraud or something "on your name," or there's a warrant "on your name."
A friend's fb page had that same message posted on it, more than once. Both of her parents are deceased & I knew this was off. I messaged her
privately to warn her. I also commented about this being a scam multiple times under the post. Many ppl were trying to be helpful to her & asking about items. Thanks for your detective work!
Good that you did that - but chances are the scammers stole her FB account and she never saw your message.
@Sashazur yup! Always try to reach out in a different way. Preferably straight to their number.
Our local community group gets these all the time from "new" members. Thankfully the moderators seem to get on there fairly quickly and take them down. Scummy scammers. Ugh!
Anytime you come across a scammer. Make sure you lead them on for as long as possible to waist there time so they make zero money and stay poor.
💯 i love telling these low life’s off!
Cash on pickup otherwise no sale, easy as that. If they don't agree, find someone else.
@koreyb
I only bother with listing items with more than $50 value. Everything else, I donate. Not worth the effort to list low value items. The things I do list always sell within a month.
100%. Face-to-Face
Pretending you stole the woman's kitchen aid was so good
It's really gotten bad on Facebook when it comes to these scams. They are doing job offer scams also all over Ireland where I am.
I got scammed on Facebook Marketplace recently, and Facebook could not possibly have cared less. They are definitely a huge part of the problem, since they don't make any effort to shut scammers down (or even let you report it when you have definitely been scammed).
😂😂😂😂😂 you produced a damn telenovela here, I was really invested 😅👌
This was for sure one of the funniest scammer videos I have seen. Keep up the good work.

It’s so funny that after I watched this video I got a RUclips ad for “Send money to bank accounts in Nigeria in a few clicks” 😂
You are my dad now
I've been in the IT and security industry a long time.. and appreciate what you're doing and the style in which you're doing it. I've also watched a plethora of other scam-baiter creators and your style takes the cake! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing this, I have to tell people who buys things off Facebook. Scammers are evil
Oh my goodness this was the best scambait ever!
The address provided seemed to be an actual address
We passed on the item and reported the Marketplace listing; similar adds with the same photos and information started showing up everywhere.
Our guess is there are a lot of people who send a deposit: and had the accounts been set up a little better, we might have been fooled, too.
That all said, cash is king in Facebook marketplace if you are going to buy in person-and a deposit should never be necessary.
My smallish community knows this is a scam and spread it all around to let people know.
This was a great video. Well played. I've seen so many of those posts on local FB pages here in Australia. I know they are scams but so many fall for them.

But damn, you are absolutely right, you'd think these people could put some effort into learning a real skill and starting a real business for real money.
That was too funny. I love how you educate us on scams and entertain us with how you mess with the scammers.

Sending them a clip of Nigerian scammers cussing you out was the cherry on top 🤣🤣
Whenever I see someone on fb or marketplace asking if I have PayPal or zelle or any of them, I say I only sell to locals & cash payments face to face.

It was hilarious, Mike! Thanks a lot for your videos!

@@JohnDoe-bd5sz 2FA doesn't stop people from putting their username, password and 2FA code into a scammer's fake facebook login screen.
