An engine tends to be more fuel efficient at or around full open throttle than at part throttle. At least that's my understanding as an auto mechanic. I think it also deals with how much air is flowing and the throttle plate acts like a choke at partial. The more cool air the better as well.

Either way, if Jimmy's boys are still alive in 10 years, they might be telling a lot of stories about,
"When their Father used to take them flying...(!)".
But they will NOT be going flying unless they have a Hang Glider and a Hill they can walk it up, before jumping off to glide back down.

I think making Cameron a speed king is interesting. Your idea of taping the gaps was done in unlimited racing in the 1940s and 1950s. Many years ago I read the autobiography of Tony LeVier who was a test pilot (chief pilot I think) for Lockheed during that period. He went into detail about taping seals and joints.
I see that you’re planning engine work. Actually I think your limiting factor is the prop. Unless it’s pitched for max rpm at top speed you’re losing efficiency. You need either a fixed pitch tuned that way or you need some type of variable pitch or constant speed prop. You may also want to look at engine cooling drag.
You may want to contact the participants of the Reno Air Races. Their “sport plane” builders have already solved the issues that you’re having.
I’ve been watching your vids since your first Cherokee 6 vids. I look forward to them. Best of luck to you.

I dropped a retention nut from a master relay when I had the carpet out of a Bonanza and it went down into the fuselage by the rudder pedals. We used a tape with adhesive on one side that was applied to a 2" wide strip 0.008" thick annealed aluminum... We called it 600 mph tape, and it was used for covering areas that had aerodynamic sealant (PS 870, 1436, etc.) put into some expansion gaps. This was done to enable the aircraft to fly - without allowing the sealant to streak across the plane during it's revenue generating flight... It worked quite well !!! Use a flat piece of flexible plastic to apply the tape onto the plane, (like the body guys use - to apply Bondo)... Some things to know, removing the wax with a rag soaked with alcohol helps the tape to bond to the plane, and using naptha on a rag can help to remove the unwanted adhesive on the plane, that was left behind, from the tape... It might remove paint where it's not bonded very well... Have fun and fly safe!!!

Jimmy, even though the cowl screws are Stainless, it depends on which type of Stainless, as some are mildly magnetic. There are probably 50 types of alloys that qualify as Stainless. Get a hold of a neodymium or samarium cobalt magnet and attach it to a coat hanger and fish for your screw. A strong magnet can be found in a wide gap door contact for an alarm system. Magnets that are hidden in doors for jamb switches are usually strong too.

On the ground no indication could be found as to what caused the hole. The windshield was patched and the next pilot to fly found the cause. The right propeller had a perfect impression of a screw in the leading edge. At the time I was doing my test at a nearby VOR there was a Tobago also using that VOR above me. Apparently the screw fell from the Tobago, fell into my prop and was then flung through the windshield.

Jimmy, I noticed a build up of just plain old dirtyness around Cameron's landing gear assembly. I have the same problem on my motorcycles, in places I can't reach to clean well. I use a product called "S-100" that's available at most motorcycle shops to clean those hard to get to places. You can get it in a kit with a hand squeeze pump; but it's much easier to use by just buying the large refill bottles, pouring them into a garden sprayer, pumping it up and just spraying it on the dirty areas. Once you spray it on, you can immediately hose it off, and the area will be clean. Usually, there's no scrubbing required at all. If the crud's really heavy you may have to lightly touch the area with a sponge, parts brush, etc. to break it loose. Also, I'm a notorious cheapskate, so I cut the S-100 by 50% with water to make it go farther. Give it a try, you'll like the results.

Maybe not push your Speed Tape 'in to' the gap allowing it to bridge both surfaces separately? I just have a thought that you're not eliminating the gap but filling the gap with a more air-streamed surface in your gap instead ... but a gap nonetheless. IF it were cloth it would bridge the two surfaces tautly (understanding you have some moving surfaces). Thank you! You, too, Silas! 👍

    Wow, busy airspace.
It amazes me that small things in the stream make a lot of difference in performance. Example is the landing lights on the DC8. Normal Cruz, they were retracted in the wing. The pilots used to extend them before needing them to act as a speed brake.
The C182s I'm used to have a Cruz speed of 122 knots. You get a 182rg with the same performing engine, 145 knots. No wonder your go fast tape increases performance.

Be careful moving the plug electrodes back and forth as this will fatigue the metal and possibly cause the electrode to depart the plug. Maybe I was taught to be overly conservative but I've been told that you move the electrodes in one direction only to prevent the fatigue on the electrodes.

Jimmy,, plastic tubing and vacuum works for me to retrieving stainless screws. Lung suck for small ones or AC vacuum pump for bigger ones. If you can see it and it's not wedged. Long Whataburger straws work good for most.

A shop vac a long hose with a hole in the side to control suction great for grabbing non magnetic parts out. Even a dust buster will work.

Easy way to get SS screws out would be to use a shop vacuum and some PVC plumbing reducers to fit a short length of 1/2" PVC pipe or even 3/8" flexible vacuum hose to the shop vacuum.

Hey Jimmy, my dad started me working on airplanes at 9 years old. Boy, do i have some stories to tell. I look back now and they are the funnest thing that happened to me. Didn't understand how serious they were at that time. Still, I wouldn't trade the memories and experiences for anything !

Jimmy I recall on our Veri Eze super straight clean build speed was basically limited to the prop and the 100hp’s ability to spin it. Rutan told us the prop and engine was pretty much the issue with getting any more speed out of it. Then some crazy guys slapped a jet motor in one.
I recall one hangar twin ran a Subaru engine more power and similar prop. He was very very very slightly faster than us talking just a few knots.
Crazy story we ended up with a prop Rutan had in his shop down in the desert after a ooopsi event during startup broke the first prop. These were hand carved wood props😳.
75% we typically ran 180ish at 4gph burn rate. We could run faster but the old Lycoming was spinning damn fast to keep up with the plane so rarely ran beyond 70-75% once at altitude.

Silas is becoming quite the aviator! Cool stuff!
FWIW, normally aspirated engines in GA airplanes reach 75% power at full throttle at ~7500 density altitude, with HP dropping off above that...

Very cool, Jimmy! It makes sense that, if the camera can make the plane 5 knots slower, closing up all those gaps and making the plane slicker with the tape could also add 3-5 knots.
P.S. from one Libra to another, Happy pre-birthday, Silas!

The tape is affecting the fuel burn. As the skin of the aircraft is now a lot smoother, given the airflow isnt going in and out of all those little cracks in the surfaces, the engine is having to work less to get it up to the same speeds, so therefore, less fuel burnt.

Have you ever looked into a G3i mag interface for electronic ignition control for that engine ( type of MSD ignition) Slick and Bendix magneto harness lead replacement allows the use of automotive style spark plugs with
stock magnetos to convert one or both magneto harnesses. Kits are available for some Lycoming and Continental engines. Then you can start thinking about a supercharger once you have enough ignition to fire it.
