I agree. His roles in The Pawnbroker and The Heat of The Night were more than great acting. They were unforgettable moments in the history of cinema. Towering achievements that defined that era.
No matter what I'm doing if In the Heat of the Night comes on I automatically stop what I'm doing and watch. Rod Steiger and Sidney Poitier's performances in that movie was one of a kind
What can I give you as an Actor. I can only give you a memory but a memory means I'm part of your thinking process. Which means I'm part of your brain. That ain't a bad gift. Precious, Genuine
Steiger was such a powerhouse--the bad directors didn't know how to handle him or were scared of him. A perfect example is 'The January Man' (1989) where director John Patrick Shanley was too afraid to tell Steiger he was way over-the-top in his scene. But Sidney Lumet was genius and really shaped Steiger's intensity in 'The Pawnbroker.'
Cool how he mentions Day-Lewis in that list of 'difficult' i.e great actors as even before he went on to do 'There will be Blood' someone like Steiger considered him one of the greats.
Wow ! Till I watched this just now, I never knew Rod Steiger fathered a son late in life. He seemed like a happy & content person when he taped this (good for him). But how sad he died a few years later & wasn't able to see his son grow up. But he left us with MANY wonderful film and TV performances ! THANKS for sharing this cool clip ! :-)
I really liked it, though I wish Larry King would have let Mr Steiger finish some of his comments. Overall, I enjoyed Mr King's celebrity interviews but often he interrupted too much !
I just love watching Rod Steiger, James Woods, Peter Falk, Peter Ustinov, David Warner (?), et al , more than pretty boys such as Grant. Peck, Flynn, Taylor, Powell, Beatty, et al.
Check out his battle with depression He said at one point he was so depressed he never left his home for days and would even urinate in bottles so he didnt have to walk to the bathroom
What a wonderful actor! One movie that showcased his acting skills was No Way To Treat a Lady and another movie with Edward G. Robinson, can't remember the name of it, but both VERY good!!
+wingsandash Absolutely. A real actor--a rarity, these days. He was willing to put it all on the line--to take risks. I believe he was also a born teacher--he had so much wisdom to share with younger generations. His death was, in my opinion, tantamount to the burning down of a library.
One of the best actors of all time
This is a down-to-earth actor Rod Steiger
Rod was an incredible actor & fascinating gentleman.
I have a notion to second that emotion !! :-)
♥️♥️♥️♥️

An acting genius.
Beyond a doubt. He sure was. And one of the bravest actors in history.
one of the best actor in movie history. RIP

My God. Such An Amazing Performance In Doctor Zhvago!!!!!♥️♥️♥️
No matter what I'm doing if In the Heat of the Night comes on I automatically stop what I'm doing and watch. Rod Steiger and Sidney Poitier's performances in that movie was one of a kind
Right on ! My sentiments exactly !
2 great actors 👍♥️
What an exceptional actor and man - I could listen to him talk forever.
Love him!!! On the Waterfront!! Missed greatly!
In the Heat of the Night-A masterpiece!
You speak the truth, Kemo Sabe ! Richly deserved its Oscar for Best Picture !
Oh yea
One of the greatest actors I have ever seen in my life. He got it.
What can I give you as an Actor. I can only give you a memory but a memory means I'm part of your thinking process. Which means I'm part of your brain. That ain't a bad gift. Precious, Genuine
To gain real insight into Rod Steiger the person, be sure to watch his acceptance speech for Best Actor in In The Heat Of The Night.

He was very over the top in the January Man.
"Exploring life in front of an audience" 😅 I love this 😀
Very intense man...certainty a great actor
You are so right about his intensity ! What an intelligent & thoughtful person ! And of course, as you pointed out, a GREAT actor !
Cool how he mentions Day-Lewis in that list of 'difficult' i.e great actors as even before he went on to do 'There will be Blood' someone like Steiger considered him one of the greats.
One of my favorite of all time

Glad you liked it! I especially admire him for doing what he did in spite of all the problems he was having in his life.
@@sierranevadatrail Well said and well put ! Thanks so much for your follow up comment ! :-)
He really could have played in the Godfather and have been just as iconic as Brando. Their scenes in Waterfront.... Sheesh!
Loved his work, excellent actor!
Superb Actor!! X
This guy's awesome ! One of my favorite. He was so good in Amityville Horror that was my first of seeing him in his craft .
He was as good an actor as we ever had.
Steiger genuinely seemed happier in that period of life than I've ever seen him in earlier interviews. He suffered from lifelong bouts of depression.
So proud to call Rod my friend.
Wonderful interview.
I really liked it, though I wish Larry King would have let Mr Steiger finish some of his comments. Overall, I enjoyed Mr King's celebrity interviews but often he interrupted too much !
Napoleon is his best part great movie
Great actor. Smart man as well.
I just love watching Rod Steiger, James Woods, Peter Falk, Peter Ustinov, David Warner (?), et al , more than pretty boys such as Grant. Peck, Flynn, Taylor, Powell, Beatty, et al.
Brilliant Actor.
Check out his battle with depression
He said at one point he was so depressed he never left his home for days and would even urinate in bottles so he didnt have to walk to the bathroom
Truly sad. But perhaps also inspirational.
He was always a very intense actor. Some roles call for under statement and Rod was not capable of that.
R.i.p Larry and Mr.steiger
What a wonderful actor! One movie that showcased his acting skills was No Way To Treat a Lady and another movie with Edward G. Robinson, can't remember the name of it, but both VERY good!!
Marlon Brando s favourite actor
Larger than life personality to fit roles made for him
Quite effective in back from eternity
And run of the arrow!
3:22 - 3:33. Wow!!! But that doesn't apply only to acting/actors. Lyrics in a song, viewing a panting, etc...
Watch the movie Al Capone-Steiger was incredible
Rod Steiger was a tremendous talent. I believe he would have been a very seriously interesting Patton!
Great point ! A role like Patton would have been right up his alley !
Clair bloom was married to rod Steiger
And she should've stayed with him, IMHO, rather than taking up with Philip Roth (a brilliant writer, but not the mensch that Rod was).
Oh yeah...OH YEAAAHHH !!!
Complex guy.
Joe leone RIP.
Such a tank
Hero.
An actor's hero--at the very least.
Just, a real person. A great source of inspiration, by way of personal example. I miss him.

Thank you for your words. And your understanding.
Quite a guy. Nothing was Flakey about this man, like you see with a lot of actors.
For sure. He was the real deal.
Wow
by far the best actor the world has ever seen.
If it wasn't for Percy Helton, I'd agree with you !
PAWNBROKER his best
Amen to that !!
Google man rip
Steiger loved to eat black bean soup on the set and then break wind 💨 for hours often sickening the crew and his fellow actors
How the fuck do you know?
The don and Mike show wjfk
Horrible performance in specialist ,horrible actor ..
Then why are you here?
Maybe you like his acting more than you’re letting on aye 😉
