I grew up as a kid/teen in the 90's watching TV seriously and I hated when this gloomy show came on becuase it would make the whole house dark. Heat of the Night, Madlock and Perry Mason reminds me of my grand-parents also..I thought In the Heat of the Nigh was either made and based back in the 70's because it looked so outdated, gloomy and country looking..

We lost so many talented black men to AIDS related Lymphoma back in the 80/90's. Such a shame. There is no telling what Mr Rollins could have accomplished during his lifetime. As for Carroll O'connor, he played everything from Archie Bunker, a crazy general, and a Senator in the Roman Forum. He was truly a one of a kind actor/writer. May they all R I P.

Being 52 now, I loved this show then and still today. Never missing a episode each week and watching the reruns today. Carroll O'Connor was great actor, writer and gentlemen from All In The Family to this show. My heart went out to him losing his son Hugh O'Connor to drugs. I respect that he didn't give up on Howard Rollins and his battle as well. Loved the whole cast from Denise Nicholas, Alan Autry, Randell Franks, Crystal Fox, David Hart and Godfrey Thorne. It a shame NBC cancelled to great shows in The Heat of the Night and Matlock. Showing no respect to Carol O'Conner or Andy Griffith, two Legends and Pioneers. I am from Covington, GA. My wife was one of the team that took care of Carrol O’Connner after he had a heart attack. (She is an RN and At the time worked at Newton County Hospital. It was a big deal at the time. My brother, who was an avid weightlifter, was a workout buddy with the actor who played Bubba. According to my brother, this guy was able to lift some serious numbers. they were both members at a local gym and were both really serious about their lifting. My grandmother’s house was featured several times in car chases and such (just because of where she lived). The base camp of the studio was just about two blocks over from her home and sometimes they would use the intersection in front of her house as a place to turn around or run through because it was a low traffic area. Also, in the episode where they blow up a church, my grandmothers church was the one they blew up. Helped them out immensely. They got new carpeting, new roof and some money for allowing the studio to blow up their church building. Everyone was very happy about it. And finally, I was fortunate enough to chaperone one of my kids on a school trip that included a visit to the Newton County jail. The officer who walked us around was very proud of the fact that Harold Rollins had been a “guest” of theirs at one point. There are still a number of places there in Covington that you can see just by driving through that were on the show.

The explosion was controlled and then the production company hired an excellent contractor that replaced or repaired all the structural problems regardless of whether it was part of the shoot. The church members were mostly elderly and unable to do the work. It was really a blessing for the members and there is little that makes a group of 70+ year old ladies happier than having a good church related story to tell. Have a wonderful day!

And was Geoffrey Thorne's departure ever explained? Crystal Fox's name should have been in the main lineup sooner as well. Luann was always a main character. It's hard to imagine now how long ago this show was produced. The country thought its majority had solved the race relations issue, thanks in part to the incredible chemistry among these characters.

I know that O'Connor purposely wrote his lines towards Parker, especially condescending, but it wore me down to see that nearly every time O'Connor spoke to Parker, it was with a distasteful tone.
I mean, I get it, but I don't. Maybe I'm too sensitive. Hart was definitely there for the paycheck.
The favoritism shown to Hugh was obvious.
I get that to, but it was thinly vailed. Huge pulled off the southern accent seemingly effortlessly. Unlike O'Connor.....I refused to watch the series when it first came out because of O'Connors horrible attempt to drawl lengthened vowels. I was embarrassed for him. I, however, enjoyed the reruns. Things that irritated me were running the siren on the patrol car all the way to the scene!
Heat would use the same actors over and over again as different characters.
Aunt Etta was very irritating and difficult to listen to. Vacant.
I knew when Rollins was acting while he was high.
I could go on. Maybe you could add to this rant.
The sound effects added so much to the program. The birds chirping. The trains horn. The piano music segue. The baa doo bee dee do do do's.....like some kind of Cajun yodeling?

I was there every day as I lived in Covington from 1973-1998 {moved 2 hours south} & was an extra in quite a few episodes! In 1990 I had a Ttop Z28 that was used in an episode but I reckon it was left on the cutting room floor! It was also the same square where I was during the filming of the first episode of Dukes of Hazzard in 1978, I was standing in front of Harper's Dime store {red building} as the general slides onto the square being chased by Roscoe {RUclips video Dukes Of Hazzard : Chase From 1st Episode}! I was also on the opposite side of the square when Burt Reynolds landed his plane to get beer in Cannonball Run 1981, I was one of the folks getting out of the way as the plane turns around! I was lucky enough to see some of the filming of Smokey & the Bandit the summer of '76 around Jonesboro, Conyers & Lithonia! Had a lot of great memories growing up in Covington - GO DAWGS ✌💖☮

My Parents and everyone they knew watched this show.
I think one other aspect was being overlooked. A new inflationary period had kicked in about 93. Most households had already lost both parents to work hours and extra overtime. Those unfortunate enough to have started a business between 89-91 lost it for the same reason in Q3 2022. No one wanted to spend on extras or new projects until things stabilized. Forced back to their Unions or Office Cubicle, they just didn't have time to watch it anymore. And most were in their low-mid 30's. Not 60+
So who was left at home? Que in 90201.
