THIS. THIS VIDEO WAS GOLD. I just got a cannon EOS (R) and this video saved me HUNDREDS of hours of frustration. Even just this ONE video helped me figure out how to navigate some of the settings and then go from there. This video was ON POINT. Amazing.
I will share with you a mistake I made, I shot a video using a Canon M50 and I set the focus on manual , when I was focusing I was leaning forward to check the screen and see if I am in focus and THEN I leaned back and shot the video! when I transferred the video on my PC for editing I immediately noticed that I was out of focus! So I guess the best solution would be to have the focus on auto or have the camera connected to a monitor so I can view myself while recording to know if I am in focus or not.
Thank you so much for this! I’ve started filing but I knew the settings weren’t right. This was simple to follow, and also completely different from the video I followed - in a good way! My settings look great now! I’ve been struggling to get my first video out, and I will keep pushing. I am glad that I saw this before I finished my first recording!
From B&H: A basic guide for best ISO for video: 100 or 200 is the best ISO for a sunny day or bright setting with lots of light. 400 ISO for cloudy days or indoor shots. 800 ISO for indoors without an external light.
what about if you're filming under changing lighting due to sunlight or outdoor settings - personally I always film in "Auto-ISO" in these environments, thoughts?
Thanks again for another quick and extremely helpful tutorial! I'm embarrassed to admit that I took FOREVER to even get my beautiful new (to me, = "gently pre-loved") Sony Alpha A7iii out of the box(!) because I was terrified of having to figure out what to do next, as I was only just starting to figure out my GoPro. I've been muddling my way along ever since, and now I'll set about correcting my settings -- many thanks again!! 😻
This is such a good video, and I have watched many. Thank you for helping set my first professional camera as I have no other help around. The videos look already so much better with those settings you shared.
Looked up “how to set up my Sony camera” and this video popped up among others. I am subscribed to the channel so I clicked on this one first. This video seems quick and straight to the point. I’m going to try it by or before Wednesday afternoon and see if it’ll work. I’ve used my phones for years even though i have a great camera, simply because i didn’t know, & still don’t know how to get the perfect settings. The comments also seem promising here. I’m trying something new and need more angles so I’ll be using my phone AND camera. I’ll be back in like 2 days with my commentary with my results. Crossing my fingers and hoping it works.
Cause lens is f3.5 thats why its grainy and noisy, buy a new lens f1.4 and check the results, for budget low - Viltrox lens Good budget - Sigma lens Crazy budget - Sony lens
Great tutorial! I'm still experimenting but have found I like using a vintage lens (Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 50mm 1.4) so I have an extra step to focus manually using a stand in and an external monitor helps with that.

Great introduction to video camera setup, even 11 months later. I plan to use a Z30 with 20mm f1.8, and was able to follow the instructions with ease. Now to my studio to shoot my RUclips Intro Video!
Can you make a video on what numbers to set on the back of LED lights? Like I have the GVM LED RGB lights, the three kit, but I don't know how to set the numbers in the back correctly. Like what percent do I do the brightness if I'm at 4800 degrees? Do I mess with saturation? My face either ends up too orange, to white, or too harsh. So I have had them in a box for like 2 years! I might get a basic mount dog light with no settings lol. But I would like to understand better how to set those type of led lights with numbers for best natural look on skin without looking cheesy and unprofessional. It is truly an art to achieve that crispy lighting with natural glowing skin tones!!
There are a couple of things I disagree with. First is the shutter speed 30 fps will get you sharper images than 24 fps. The second is aperture. The widest aperture will get you the blurriest background but not the sharpest image. Every lens is different so you might have to experiment if you want to find the sharpest image.
Thanks for all these great tips. I’ve always wondered what the most common settings of creators’ camera are. One quick question: Why frame rate of 24? I’ve read others who advised using 30. Is it because so that we can use a slower 1/50 exposure speed vs 1/60 with 30?
It more comes down to the look. 24frames had more motion blur and has what they call a “cinematic look” films are shot in this frame rate. It’s more natural to the eye. 30fps is more sharp/less motion blur. Has more of a “real” feel. It’s a preference thing.
Thank you so much for this video. Some of the settings my camera does not have, however I'm happy with how it turned out. How do you know how close you have the camera and the subject?
