Refilling AdBlue / DEF on a BMW Diesel - How Hard Can it Be?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 янв 2022
- After 27 months of ownership we got our first AdBlue (or DEF - Diesel Exhaust Fluid as its called in the US) refill message on our F46 BMW 220d Gran Tourer.
The owners handbook suggests that you lock the refill bottle in place and it auto fills, however if you buy a 10 litre can from a petrol station or Auto parts shop, it just has a filler tube.
Overall its a pretty simple job as you will see.

Thank God for people like you who make something which i was stressing about so simple. Keep it up!
Thanks Cliff. I was hesitant to make the video at first but it’s doing quite well.
Very helpful. I re-filled the ad-blue on my 5 series today, no bother. I even managed to avoid the dripping hose by putting some plumbers tape around the thread before connecting it to the canister - worked a treat and dry as a bone, with no waste.
Excellent. Glad to hear it. 😀
Very useful video… AdBlue refilling sign appeared last night and I was a bit confused how to do it myself, then Google recommended your video which was very helpful and detailed. Thank you very much!
Thanks. Glad I could help.

You are most welcome and I subscribed to your channel as it is very informative and helpful.
Excellent video thank you. I’ve always had service plans for this but not on my latest car so that was really helpful.
Glad I could help 😀
Love this channel Aviation and BMW’s
Thanks. They don't always go together, but I enjoy making the videos.
Thanks for your video! I just bought a ’21 118d and had no idea what AdBlue was. Looks like it’s a little pricey here in Portugal 25,95 € but I’m glad it’s not something I need to replace every month.
Thanks. Hopefully it will only be needed once or twice a year. 😀
@@NeilsCarsAviationTravel thanks mate. Does it have a limit on how much you can put in the car? Or does it just spill over once full?
@@mdtaylor2274 the iDrive should say how much is required. I think it’s about 8-10 litres.
Refilling directly from a 10L bottle is an exercise in frustration. Do the following instead:
1. Buy a 2L bottle of Coke. Drink it, rinse it, and rinse it again with distilled water. Minerals can cause expensive damage to your SCR system.
2. Buy a Lisle offset funnel, item 17232. You need this specific funnel.
3. Fill the 2L bottle with AdBlue from a seated position using the funnel, periodically allowing it to breathe. Put the AdBlue bottle on your knee and the Coke bottle between your feet.
4. Put the funnel in the car's AdBlue filler port and slowly pour the 2L down its gullet. Rotate the funnel as necessary to maintain a slow, steady flow rate. Refill the 2L as necessary until your tanks are full.
5. Rinse the funnel and store it in a bag to prevent dust. Do NOT rinse the 2L. Instead, cap it, label it, and save it for next time.
Thanks for the tip.
Be wary of using adblue stored outside in clear cans, it goes off. Been using adblue from halfords, its in light blocking plastic bags, way to go. Handy spout and alot less rubish.
Thanks for the tip.
Interesting - I now know how to refill adblue when it’s due. I remember driving slowly around the streets of Manningham, Bradford, a few years ago and the hire car asking for adblue - was quite nerve-wracking as I had no idea how to top it up.
Yeah I think some cars have the tank under the boot floor.
I got a nox sensor EML warning. My local garage cleared error, and it's not returned. He did say i need to put adblue, but the display on idrive says 8000 miles left. I'm confused. Surel, if i do that, i will overfilll it.
You can’t over fill it as it’s like a fuel tank, once it’s full it will just spill out.
Not sure what’s the sensor has to do with the Adblue though.
An advice from my friends from BMW is to use AdBlue BMW original only, it has an additive to protect the Adblue injection pump!
It has been proven that this is not correct. BMW Adblue is not made by BMW but simply a rebranded one from a known brand to ISO standards.
Even BMW say you can use any brand as long as it is to the correct ISO standard.
@@NeilsCarsAviationTravel Thank you! Good to know! by any chance, do you know who is the maker of BMW’s Adblue product? And what is the ISO standard accepted by BMW?
@@simioncsm5042 in my car’s owners manual it says I can use any Adblue to ISO 22241. I’m afraid I have no idea who makes it.
As an example though I recently bought a complete set of OEM shocks and springs for my Alpina from Autodoc using the correct BMW part numbers.
The shocks even came in BMW GROUP boxes. The parts are actually Sachs and Eibach.
I paid £406 for 4x shocks and springs, the same parts that BMW whitish charge over £1000 for.
The rest you have left in the bottle mix it 1 - 10 water and pour it on the plants to make them grow and throw the filler neck away so you dont use it again to avoid getting crystallized adblue in the tank next time you fill
Thanks.
@@NeilsCarsAviationTravel i know its not a car but im a komatsu field tech and my biggest issue on adblue is adblue left exposed to direct sun light and costumers that reuse the filler neck where adblue has crystallized 😁
Hello! My 418d f36 2017 should have adblue but I can’t seem to find it anywhere… I tried looking in the user manual but couldn’t find anything. Does that mean i don’t have adblue even if the engine is B47? Best regards!
Yes, I believe AdBlue was optional on 2017 models, and became std in around 2018/2019.
@@NeilsCarsAviationTravel Thank you for the fast reply! Appreciate it man!
How do you know when to stop filling up I’m worried about over filling it
On the BMW it tells you how many litres to fill up so I just put slightly less than what it says in there.
I got a DS crossback 1.5 performance. what's the maximum I can fill up? 10L enough ?
May need to check the manual as some cars are 8L and others 10L
@@NeilsCarsAviationTravel Thanks for replying. i filled up 10L today.
Costco is currently 5L@ £7.59
Thanks. Good to know for my next fill up.
Does the i drive tell you how much to put in?
Yea it does on mine. It gives mileage left and how many litres to fill it.
@@NeilsCarsAviationTravel thanked mate.
Today 10L costs £22!
Wow. I haven’t had to buy any since I made this video. Glad it hardly uses any.
@@NeilsCarsAviationTravel It's putting me off getting a diesel, what a rip off! Some cars need a tank of it every 2500 miles like the Vauxhall ones.
@@ridehead8771 I can see where you are coming from. Luckily we’ve only needed 10L in 16,000 miles and there’s still 5000+ range left.
Having said that, having had petrol and diesel versions of this 220d I still feel we are saving having a diesel, even with the 18p /litre extra for diesel.
The fuel price is about 12% higher but we are getting 45% more mpg around town and 25% more on a long run over our old (less powerful) petrol.
Having said that, for general running about I use our 2006 Jetta TDi.
EDIT: When we got the 220d the main reason for going to diesel was that I wanted XDrive for towing as the FWD models struggled to put power down with a 1400kg trailer on the back.
How much Miles with a tank?
I’ve refilled mine twice in 24,000 miles.
@@NeilsCarsAviationTravel and any problems with this system? Is better to buy a car with or withou adblue?
@@ruiandre9976 I’ve never had an issue and not heard of Adblue issues.
@@NeilsCarsAviationTravel and what do you think, car with or without adblue?
@@ruiandre9976 personally I don’t mind either way.
Its bad for paint if u spill!
It is if you don’t wash it off, but there’s no nasty chemicals that will eat into the paint.
Dripping diesel on the paint will do more damage.
