if you haven't touched them yet, try "The Dying Earth" Series by Jack Vance, and "A Fire Upon the Deep" by Vernor Vinge, both really interesting and wild sci-fi.....
Also if you want something NOT sci-fi... My favorite book is 'Little, Big' by John Crowley.... certainly not for everyone.

I think the problem with Dune: Messiah is that Frank Herbert focused more on getting his point across since no one understood that Paul isn't supposed to be idolized and/or seen as a hero by the readers in book one

I actually really enjoyed it, perhaps because of the huge negative response it lowered expectations. But i have read it multiple times now and feel its the last act of book 1. Dune certainly isnt an action adventure series, something important to know before diving in. Its all grand ideas and philosphy... if you cant stomach that stuff... it will be a slog for anyone. Bu, the following books definitely begin reaching out to varied and weird places.
      But, im a dune geek.
So, take that with a pinch of salt.

Well, it's a sad book over sad choices, that's the main problem, it's a bit of a downer. But there is so much beauty as well in this end of a character arc. People, you should know by now that's life. It is always sad at the end, it doesn't mean the journey wasn't interesting after all. As you can tell I love it.

@@wayfarervisual Herbert has been working on DM while Dune was being published, so it makes sense. It was originally titled the Fool Saint, but later renamed for marketing purposes. I could have fit easily into Dune internal books structure. Dune -> Muad'Dib -> The Prophet -> Fool Saint.
And you are right. The Dune series is about philosophy, religion, ethics, ecology, politics etc. and thoughts that provoke in you. Action is just a carrier. For me, that's why it's so much re-readable.

I read the novel but I don't think it stands very well on its own, the ending is extremely abrupt. I read "Dune Messiah" straight after and it's basically the epilogue to the original Dune novel and it's great, also way shorter. I don't think people can really appreciate the full story without reading the 2nd book. Not sure about the other novels though, but I'm glad they will adapt that book to complete the movie trilogy.

I read all six books and I definitely recommend you finish the last two. The last two were a lot about the Bene Gesserit and they were really good. Sadly, the series ends kind of on a cliffhanger as Frank Herbert passed away before finishing the story at the end of Chapterhouse Dune. I'm reading "Hunters of Dune" which is like book 7 by Brian Herbert, and honestly, it's not even 1/10th as good as his father's books.

From what I understand, Hunters and Sandworms basically require reading two other trilogies since they didn't have Frank's notes when they started making their own books. I don't know if I really want to read 6 lesser books to get a compromised ending. I'll make up my mind after Chapterhouse and give House Atreides a shot.

The God Emperor creates a situation, much like an explosive impetus, that leads to "The Great Scattering" and it is this scattering of humans far and wide (into unknown reaches of space) that ensures humanity's survival since the idea is that some of humanity might be eliminated but it would be impossible to eliminate all.
In my opinion, the last two books (Heretics and Chapter House) when put together, equal the magic of the first book. I know some people may not agree but I was as enthralled by the Bene Gesserit story as much as I was with the rise of the Atreides. I love the in between books too but they are the continuation of the established story not the introduction to something new, and I dare say, exciting.

Dune Messiah was less about the plot and more about Paul’s internal struggle. It was about how he could see the future but couldn’t control it. How his leadership had turned into governing.
The reason it is such a confusing book is because Paul makes a lot of bizarre and sometimes counter-productive decisions at the end of his regime. My understanding was it was all so he could help navigate the present to his preferred future. One where Chani was spared a horrible fate.
“I meddled in all possible futures I could create until, finally, they created me”

To me the most interesting way to read Dune is that the prescient visions Paul and Leto II have may not be 100% accurate. Does Paul deciding to lead the Fremen necessitate the jihad? Maybe. But maybe Paul could've chosen a different path, and his visions led him into a self fulfilling prophecy. Same with Leto Il and his Golden Path. Was this really the only way to save humanity, or was this just what Leto II THOUGHT was the only way to save humanity?

I loved the first book, and my interest waned more and more as I went through the books. I intended to read all 6 of Frank's books, but the story had definitely overstayed its welcome for me by the time of God Emperor and I just couldn't do the last 2, haha. Maybe I'll try them at some point, but I was definitely thoroughly done by the end of 4.
I am curious how Dune Messiah is going to be adapted, and specifically if Denis will still stay as close to the source material as he mostly did with the first book. While I enjoyed Messiah well enough, it definitely feels like it could be a rough watch in movie form without some big changes.

I read the first three years ago, and just repurchased Herberts 6 book set.
I agree with you on Dune Messiah, but keep in mind that Herbert wrote it as a fix for the readership’s misunderstanding Paul (you may have heard that readers had thought Paul was on a Hero’s Journey, not understanding (in Herberts view) that Dune was intended as a cautionary tale *against* messianic types and charismatic leaders. Dune Messiah was written to shine a light on that.

The Dune series is my favorite sci fi series. In fact it is what got me hooked on the genre. I will admit that it took me 2 or 3 tries to make it through the first book but once I finished it I was hooked. I love the deep dives into philosophy, religion, politics, espionage, etc. The original 6 books books are extremely dense tomes and not for the faint of heart. There were sections where I could only read a few pages at a time. This may sound counter-intuitive but I like that I don't like everything about the series. It led to a lot of inner debate. I questioned character motives, challenged my own beliefs, battled frustration, etc. Ultimately, it was very rewarding. I am currently reading the 19th book in the series.
As for the original six versus the extended universe; I liked the shift. A friend one time tried to argue whether the books written by the son are “canon,” and my response was that they are his own canon. The writing style is very different and much more action oriented. I remember reading somewhere that Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson spent a long time reading through a treasure trove of Frank's notes while writing the books and while they completed the original series they wanted to add to the origins in their own ways. Personally, I don't think the universe translates well to board games, video games or movies. I could talk for hours about these books and tried to some up some thoughts in a few words. I hope I made some sense.

Very thoughtful reviews of this series of books. Oh, and I’ve seen the movie. I enjoyed it while watching it. But towards the end, it felt a bit rushed. Also, they deviated somewhat from the plot of the novel at the closing of the movie, and it felt flat, it felt false for me. It was disappointing. But, the visuals were great; the performances were great; the soundtrack and cinematography was great, and I enjoyed watching the film, while in the theatre. But when I left, I couldn’t help but feel a little let down. I still recommend it. And see it in a good theatre, because when it works, it really works.

I did like heretics and chapterhouse. I feel like I'm a minority for sure with that, and the Brian Herbert/Kevin Anderson books hunters and sandworms are all right, and they do wrap things up. Very easy to read, anyway. Finishing the series is worth doing in my opinion, if only to try and imagine what Frank would have done instead.

Dialogue is not his strongest suit, and his characters' inner monologues can sometimes start to feel a bit repetitive, imo, but he's extremely poetic when he wants to be, and you can detect his passion for ecology. The politics is the best part, though.

    • @valliyarnl
      @valliyarnl  10 месяцев назад +1

Definitely about the ecology. Especially how he progresses it in GEoD. Controversial: but I actually liked his dialogue! Maybe because I flipped between the audiobooks and the text, but this was one of my favorite uses I’ve seen of the 3rs person omniscient. Especially in book 1 and 3. It is repetitive but I loved the Wheel of Time so that didn’t bother me hahaha

I do wish that Frank Herbert had been able to finish his seventh Dune book, and I am not certain at this point that the alleged notes toward it ever existed due to the poor quality of the books produced by Kevin J Anderson that were supposedly based on them. For myself, the cliffhanger those last two books end with make the final trilogy unreadable, though I do understand people who enjoy them. They are good, as far as they go, with some excellent ideas.
Somewhat related, I'd suggest that reading Herbert's non-Dune novel, Hellstrom's Hive, it can be seen as a precursor to his ideas for the Bene Tleilax in those last two Dune novels. So, in some ways, it is possible to think of it as a prequel of sorts. It's also quite good body-horror SF, so if you like that sort of thing consider this a suggestion. However, like a lot of body-horror it's rather misogynistic, so that's something to keep in mind as well.

I went through the first three Dune audiobooks while at work. I have possibly an unpopular opinion of not really enjoying the books at all. I tried reading them back around 2013, bought the first six at once on recommendation. I had an extremely hard time with just the first one. Revisiting it changed nothing. I prefer the movies, despite, or even because of, the changes made.

    Excellent video, Wera!
I have a recommendation for your next review: The Foundation Series. It's a science fiction classic, and shares many parallels with the universe of Dune (dying galactic empires, students of clairvoyance, religious fundamentalism, futuristic technology, corruption, political upheaval, etc).
Herbert was heavily influenced by Asimov's work, to the point that many would argue the former owes the latter a tremendous debt.

I actually read the first Foundation book a few years back. I enjoyed it, but perhaps I was too young to fully appreciate it. I remember liking how it was kind of like a series of vignettes from different stages of the Empire. That being said, as much as I liked it as a thought experiment of what psychohistory (i think that's what it was called) could mean for a society, I do find myself drifting towards narratives with characters to latch onto, so it was quite jarring for me to leave characters I grew attached to behind and jump forwards in time every couple tens of pages. Due to this, I'm not sure if Foundation suits my personal preferences, but who knows! Maybe I'll try it again in the future and love it :)

      @@valliyarnl You're very welcome.
As for your first foray into Foundation, that's interesting to learn. What you may not know is that the first book was written as a series of shorts for pulp magazines in the early 1940s, and only adapted into a full volume later on. Thus, the original feels rather disjointed. The next two books in the series, however, (Foundation & Empire, and Second Foundation), don't share this problem. They introduce some much-needed female characters into the cast, as well as one of my favorite villains of all time: The Mule.
Alright, no more spoilers. All I'll say is that, should you give the Foundation universe a second chance, I think you'll find it's well worth the investment (and that it packs much more into far smaller a space than Dune).

Yes I would recommend reading Heretics and Chapterhouse. They explain some things from God Emperor and they expand the Dune universe in some cool and interesting ways. Heretics in particular is my 2nd favorite of the series after book 1.
I’ve seen Dune Pt. 2 three times now and I like it a lot. I think Pt. 1 is the better film overall, but there is a lot to admire about Pt. 2. I recommend seeing it on IMAX or a comparably large screen. It really adds to the experience.

Children of dune is where I stopped, just couldn’t do it anymore. It’s been a while, but from what I remember that is the book wherein
    - tigers are trained to be assassins
    - a most loyal character betrays because… idk… they needed a close character to betray (completely unearned character change)
    - people who were born on Dune leave the planet (it’s always been a huge plot point that leaving Dune after exposure to so much spice would kill them from the withdrawal effects)
I was done, the characters just seemed to become thinner and less understandable, the plot just grew to be more outlandish and the rules of the world were subverted for cheap plot points

Hi. New to your channel and a massive Dune fan. I think your reviews were pretty spot on, but damn you are a harsh critic when it comes to rating them 🙂Personally, I think the original Dune is a 9, and easily ranks up there with Lord of the Rings as one of the best books of all time. You are quite correct in that Herbert was more interested in the philosophy and themes then plot. I would say finish Herbert's series with Heretics and Chapterhouse, but don't bother with the rest (let your imagination finish the story as Herbert sadly passed away before writing his 7th and final book). Have fun 🙂

Herbert is revered but I had to stop after Children because it really became a tedious effort. FWIW, I think your analysis of Herbert’s messages is spot on. Dune2 is a better version of the story so far but, considering Messiah, the third movie will need a lot of “interpretation” by DV. Thanks.

I just finished Chapterhouse and I absolutely do not regret it. The last 20% of Chapterhouse, in my opinion, goes toe to toe with anything in Dune.
However, absolutely take a break. I took a month off between God Emperor and Heretics and it was well worth it.
God Emperor is as much a Dune story as it is a philosophy text book, so you should absolutely take some time.
But when you’re ready, finish Heretics and Chapterhouse. They have their highs, some lows, a very interesting ending, and A LOT of Bene Gesserit.

But if we take into account the sequels then I have to say Dune series>>>dune movies

There will always be a person or a group that lusts for control over others. A danger might be in freedom that allows that element to embed itself into the system at the root spreading throughout. The challenge would be maintaining the system of liberty while at the same time keeping the authoritarian elements from gaining control.

Thank you for this video… I’ve been thinking of finally sitting down to read these books, and now I at least have an idea of what sort of stories they are. It’s always a bummer jumping into a story expecting it to be one thing when it is something else, which in turn gives one a poor experience.
I’ve actually been reading the Pendragon cycle by Stephen Lawhead. It’s a retelling of the King Arthur stories. I am absolutely loving them, but I also recognize that they are not everyone’s cup of tea since the stories deal with the spread of the Christian faith in a world run by druids. I find it fascinating and well done, but I can see how other might not find it so. Anyways…after hearing your thoughts on Dune, I would love to hear your thoughts on these books if it sounds interesting.

You probably got this but the GED assumed the role of tyrant to suppress humanity in order to foment a desperate need to be independent, expand, and be free; free of any oracular vision and limitations. To seek their own multiple paths. It's essential for their survival in the final battle (Kralizec).
If you like the Bene Gesserit, you may like Heretics and Chapterhouse as both books focus almost entirely on them and their conflict with an also female dominated power called the Honored Matres. Descendants of the Atreides, male and female are among the leadership of the Bene Gesserit and must find a way to survive the Honored Matres and fulfill the Golden Path.

I'm so envious of everyone who loves the Dune book series. I tried reading the first book. I really tried, but nope. Did not click with me at all. I could read LOTR series at age 11 without problems (even the awful Swedish translation that even Tolkien himself disliked). But Dune...I just couldn't. When I read about the books it sounds interesting, but when I try to read it, I just can't stomach his style of writing, I suppose.

When I read sci-fi, I need to go all in or not at all. Lots of moving parts you never heard of, so... Herbert is great, but to appreciate him you need to do the work and this series is work. Tolkien was a serious read if you include just the Hobbit and The Ring stuff. The Appendixes and the Silmarillion will keep people busy for years pondering them. Hard to let a story go I guess for a writer when the going is good. I get that, but buy the ticket, get ready for the ride.

Sounds like you missed the point of God Emperor. While the question of end justifying the means is important, the _means_ of survival was not the tyranny or Leto II. Leto's was teaching the _lesson_ to humanity to reject oppressive tyranny and fanatic loyalty to charismatic leaders.

    • @valliyarnl
      @valliyarnl  10 месяцев назад

Well I think that the point is that since Leto forced stagnation of society, the people would become so restless that after his death he knew they’d diversify across the galaxy and develop an immune gene to prescience. I think “does the means justify the end” is a big part of Seonas character so I focused on that in my video. Of course it’s not the only one but since this wasn’t a deep dive, I decided not to talk about everything (that’s something Quinn’s Ideas does so maybe you’d like his videos more?).

    • @GreylanderTV
      @GreylanderTV 10 месяцев назад

@@valliyarnl Yes that sounds more like it. Perhaps it was just your wording in the video. Seemed like you were saying the central question of the book is asking which is better, authoritarian rule(for the greater good) or a freed & open society? But the book makes no question of it, and makes it clear: authoritarian rule is bad. It's so bad that Leto II had to beat the lesson that it is bad into humanities genes for 3,000 years. lol!

Dune the movies were meant for people who havent read the books. On their own they are good movies, but if you were expecting the books you will be poorly disappointed. And yes, the Scyfy 2000 version successfully proves you can make a movie accurate to the book. Dune Messiah is going to really tick people off as Chani dies and Paul leaves and there are no flashy fight and battle scenes. Not to mention DV doesnt like to explain things and people are going to be lost at all the new factions.

God Emperor is a good stopping point and a decent ending to the series. If you keep reading, the next 2 books are set far in the future compared to GEOD and there's no ending as Frank Herbert unfortunately passed away before he could finish the series. The next 2 books do introduce some really crazy ideas so they still might be worth reading because of that. Depends on how much you liked the series. Personally I think GE is a good place to stop.

I would consider Foundation to be the Lord of the Rings of sci-fi and Dune to be the Narnia of sci-fi. Anyway, I deem God Emperor perfect closure, what I know about Heretics and Chapterhouse is turning me off majorly, and for the longest time it got a clear no from me due to being two parts of a planned trilogy he never got to finish. There was a blip of interest from me when his son revealed that they had found a 50-or-so-page outline of his and were going to finish it, but that got smothered immediately by the statement that they wouldn't try to extend that tenfold into a novel as close to what would've been as they could, but replace the universe backstory reveals in it with stuff fitting with their then-recent spinoff prequels (which they've been near-constantly continuing since).
