- Hey guys. So until this point, I always went over Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and English pronunication differences, so this time I changed it up. We went over French, German, and Spanish pronunciation differences. This time around, we feature Fabien, Stefanie Michova, and my Spanish friend Min. I hope you enjoy it! Thanks for watching!

To be fair, German, like English is quite on the edge of what is Germanic. For example: day in Danish, Dutch, Norse & Swedish is dag, but it's Tag in German. Also: apple, appel, eple, but Apfel. For more on that, see High German consonant shift on wiki. German is a rather odd Germanic language, consedering the name. I'm Dutch by the way.

The reason why Spain and France call Germany Alemania and Allemagne respectively is because there used to be a confederation of Germanic tribes called the Alemanni (All Man) that ruled much of the territory that came in contact with the Roman Empire, and, as we know from history, Spanish and French are both Romance languages, meaning they descended from Latin, the language of the Roman Empire. Additionally, the French were descendants of the Franks (another Germanic tribe) so they needed to make a distinction among the other fellow Germanic tribes, hence Allemagne became the preferred term. Iberia (Spain & Portugal) was also invaded by the Visigoths (AKA western Goths, another Germanic tribe), and, thus, it is believed that the Spanish and Portuguese most likely adopted the term Alemania and Alemanha respectively from the Franks. Surprisingly, similar names are used in Turkish (Almanya), Arabic (Almanya), Azerbaijani (Almaniya) and Welsh (Almaen).
