The crews who had worked on set with JD have only good things to say about him. Being on set can be up to 13 hours a day and everyone gets to see the true colors of the person under stressful circumstances. Bless Mr Depp for giving so much to others.
Example: Disney wouldn't provide coats for the crew working in cold temperatures. Johnny personally bought everyone a coat.

Johnny is so tuned into his creativity. It is remarkable to hear him talk about his instincts and then watch him turn a name on a script into a believable character. That is his magic when he is free to create! It is Johnny’s ability to create that brings his characters to life and he is splendid!

This is definitely a character he would think of. It's like a little of Jack Sparrow in it as well. He's keeping Jack's spirit alive here.
