    The difference between Model 3 and the DC was certainly a lot smaller than it was with Model 2 and the Saturn, which certainly didn't stop Sega from doing those home conversion. However, the market really was starting to switch during that time, with arcade gaming beginning to lose popularity in favor of more content-rich console games. I think you were right on the money there.

      ehhh, PS2 was better hardware-wise. Honestly it turned out for the best, I prefer Sega games being released on all platforms vs. yet another exclusive hoarding company. Just the other day I fired up my PC port of Crazy Taxi 3 in 4k and all it needed was a fan made patch to run at that res, everything else worked out of the box. If the dreamcast ad succeeded all of the later sega games would have been stuck on one platform.

    • @knightshousegames

      What decided this generation was the same thing that decides any generation, the game catalog. I remember wanting a Dreamcast SO bad, and wanting a PS2, both were so cool to me, but at the end of the day, PS2 just had the games, and Dreamcast didn't.
      PS2 was just so much better than everybody else in that generation, with games that no one could compete with at the time. Also, PS2 could play PS1 games, while all the other consoles in this generation couldn't play predecessor games, which was an absolutely unheard of advantage at the time, making it so PS2 had an inherent install base from day one.
      I think the writing was already on the wall for Sega by then. After some of the mistakes they made in the 32 bit era, they were already limping in with Dreamcast, and Playstation was a juggernaut that no one anticipated, that even made Nintendo bend a knee, which no one had ever been able to do before then.
      Like Sega gave Nintendo a run for their money in the 16 bit era (which is a pretty impressive feat, given that they were competing against one of Nintendo's best game lineups on any of their consoles to date), but it was at least an even matchup, but the way PS2 just ran away with the lead in that era from everybody is just jaw dropping. If Sony had sold only half as many PS2s in that era as they actually did, they still would have still sold about 5 times as many PS2s as Nintendo sold Gamecubes. And about 10 times more PS2s than Sega sold Dreamcasts. But in real life, the numbers are just even nuttier than that.
      The biggest mistake Dreamcast made was the era it came out in.

    Those Model 3-graphics like in Daytona 2 or Scud race are really hard to beat.
    While technology has moved on, that bright arcady visuals still look great today. Everything is so crisp, sharp, colorful and bright at a smooth framerate, it is a pure joy to watch. Sega Dreamcast was a beautiful console, very fun and I dare to say slightly ahead of it's time. What killed it (mostly) was Playstation 2 and it's ability to play DVD's. There is a rumor floating around about a Dreamcast mini classic in production, I sincerely hope it's true.

    • @Lightblue2222
      @Lightblue2222 5 лет назад +3

      I would think Saturn mini would come first. Maybe theyl just skip to Dreamcast. People would actually buy this over ps1 mini. Sega has games ppl want to discover. Since most had ps1 at the time, Saturn/Dreamcast would feel like something new.

    • @Retro_Royal
      @Retro_Royal 5 лет назад +4

      You are right i t was quite ahead of it´s time. Being hacked so early was the nail in the coffin that scared 3rd parties away. A Saturn Classic would be hard to emulate on a 100$ Device due to its complex Hardware. For the Dreamcast Mini the Sega nerd in me rages that you (no anyone!) should have got one while there were sold, it is not a huge console concerning housing a GD-Rom unit. ;)

      @The_Real_DCT 5 лет назад +3

      @@Lightblue2222 no it wouldn't, they still haven't nailed Saturn emulation to the point where you can sell it at retail. So unless it's going to be filled with PC ports of Saturn games it's not going to happen. Dreamcast is easier to do mainly because it wasn't a mess hardware wise like the Saturn was.

      @arturkarpinski164 5 лет назад +2

      YTCensorsMe Poop, you're very knowledgeable and I respect that but please don't state your opinion as if it's fact. I lived through those times and I remember that PS2's capability to play DVD's played a significant role in its popularity. Many people talked all the time back then about how this aspect helped to tip the scale in PS2's favor in a major way. So to say that PS2's ability to play DVD's had nothing to do with it is ludicrous. In 1999 and 2000 DVD players were not cheap yet, the price drop happened later. Also, both Playstation and Nintendo had a more loyal following and diehard fan base than Xbox who was a newby and Sega who disappointed many of it's fans with bogus business decisions in the 90's (32x and Sega CD). Saturn was not able to redeem Sega with PS1 and N64 as it's competition. Basically because of this Sega had a bad rap. There is a lot of factors at work here so let's agree to disagree. Earlier you stated that you're sick of people blaming PS2's DVD capability for DC's demise, I have to respectively disagree, basically there are more important things to be sick of than console wars from 20 years ago. Anyway I do thank you for shining some light on the subject for me, I always do enjoy seeing something from a different point of view. Peace and love :-) :-)

    Another excellent video. Very sad to see so many games we may never get a chance to officially play. Sega never should have killed themselves off the way they did, they did so much for gaming as a whole and deserve to still be here over the likes of Sony or Microsoft, who were never primarily game software manufacturers.

    Sega is the polar opposite of EA crap marketing decisions and brilliant games, while EA produces mediocre to crap games and markets and sells the heck out them. Another brilliant picture painted SEGALX!

      Partly because the kids today will let them shit all over them and ask for more. Sega was my favorite but they shit on us with the lack of support for the 32x Sega CD and Saturn thats 3 strikes before Dreamcast got up to bat.

      Totally true, I always felt this about Madden VS Sega's NFL 2k series, while Madden is a fine series and well executed it was never really the awesomely tuned perfection the NFL 2k series was, if the NFL hadn't granted EA exclusive rights I'm pretty sure SEGA & Visiual Concepts would've kept producing stiff competition for EA and eventually a much better football expirience and not one that was just marginally better, and you get EA knew this and took the cowardly way outta having to deal with competition, and were to lazy to simply well, compete...and used $$ and their marketing muscle to acquire exclusive rights to the NFL license...eliminating competition, competition which generates innovation, and therefore better games, typical EA bulls**t ...shameful.

    Excellent point regarding the Harley Davidson licensing. It makes me wonder what prevented that title from seeing a home release, knowing that Harley so desperately needed to attract young people to the brand in order to make them future customers.

    Makes sense that Sega was reluctant to release ports of these arcade games, especially since similar arcade ports were trashed in reviews by gaming publications at the time. All we wanted to see at that time were adventure and rpg games, unfortunate.

    The Dreamcast version of The House Of The Dead 2 was a an arcade perfect conversion of the Sega Model 3 arcade board though. In terms of game play, graphics and sound the two versions were absolutely identical. Back in 1999 when I owned the Dreamcast version of the game I used to walk to my local arcade and play the coin-op version just to compare the two, for the life of me I couldn't see any differences, they were straight up identical. Even today, now we have the luxury of side by side comparison videos I still can't see any differences between the two. The Dreamcast was not merely running a port of the arcade version, it totally WAS running the arcade version.

    • @SegaLordX

      House of the Dead 2 was a Naomi based arcade release, not Model 3. It was perfect because of the DC being based on the same tech.

    • @extremedigitalarts4367
      @extremedigitalarts4367 2 года назад

      In case anyone still read this: HotD2 on the DC was *NOT* "absolutely identical" in terms of graphics !
      Due to the memory limitations of the DC the texture size/resolution had to be reduced (drastically on certain points).
      So I'am sorry, but in terms of fact or false, this is: False.

    I can understand why those light gun games never got a release. SOA never released the Stunner in the West and we were left with 3rd party options. I had two different 3rd party light guns and they did not work well with my 27" Sony Wega television. It was hit or miss with those light guns, and it really depended on what kind of television you had.

      @referral madness Now it would be less of an excuse but back then we weren't so connected. The price of importing was crazy high and finding a place to buy it from wasn't that easy. If you weren't an adult or a kid that had parents with money its basically impossible

    • @Gamevet
      @Gamevet 5 лет назад

      @referral madness Sega was pouring their remaining money into the North American Dreamcast market, that was outselling Japan and Europe. Releasing light gun games to your most profitable market, without having the official light guns supported there, wouldn't make sense. I wouldn't have bought those (unless they came packed with a DC Stunner), because of the horrible experience I had with the light gun games that were brought here.

    It'd be interesting to see what other arcade gems remain unported. Is a video touching on emulation of some of these off the table?
    The rarity of some of these arcade games may mean that Sega fans have a mother lode of games that they've never even heard of that they can only now play via emulation!

I've logged many hours on DC Vf3tb, SR2, and SEGA bass fishing with the fishing controller. It's nice to have Daytona 3 and Scud Racer content on Xbox Outrun 2, but it's not the same as having the real games.

    I remember a glitch on Shun Di in VF3 that if you stand at the edge of the boat if would flip over and over. I bought my Import Dreamcast in January 1999 with VF3, Sonic Adventure and Sega Rally 2 but the real reason I imported it was I knew SF3 wasn’t coming to the Sega Saturn even with the 4mb ram cart. Street Fighter 3 W Impact finally got released in December 1999 I was a happy man......it dosen’t feel it was 19 years ago.

    The Lost World - Jurassic Park was literally the reason I bought a Dreamcast after seeing a screenshot of it next to a Dreamcast on a generic ad in the back of a GamePro magazine. I immediately recognized what game it was after playing it so many times in the arcade and that was it - my reason to buy a Dreamcast when I already had a PS2. Then it never came out. Years later, I was reading a copy of Dreamcast magazine (I think it was a UK publication, and I think it was the first issue) and found out they wrote that a port WAS in development for Dreamcast and that it was rumored that it would include a port of the original Jurassic Park game as an unlockable bonus feature. Do I fully believe the article I read at all? No, because I never trust biased, single-console-focused publications at all, but...man, I wonder if it was true at all and there's an unreleased build sitting on some dev kit out there somewhere.

    Scud Race not getting ported would have been down to licensing. The BPR Global GT Series that the cars were modelled from, turned into the FIA GT Championship a year after the game came out, so all the licensing agreements probably got annulled.

      @@jacklazzaro9820 I don't hate the DC controller, and at the time it had analog triggers and jump pack and screen which were great for some games. But it tires my hand out, and doesn't have the ease and accuracy of control as Saturn 6 button, especially when playing 2D fighters. I try to use that tiny dpad but often press 3 directions at once with my big thumb. Those Ascii FT pads looked awesome to me, but I never picked one up and now they are hard to get.

    One thing people forget is that the Dreamcast STILL couldn't match the overwhelming power of the Model 3 and NAOMI systems, especially where VRAM is concerned. Model 3 has 25 MB of VRAM, and the Dreamcast only 8 MB. This might explain the Dreamcast's inferiority in terms of textures.
