      These games would have saved the Saturn

    This is why emulation is important. It's not just people stealing games. It's saving games that would be lost to history.

    • @ajsingh4545

      What is there to steal exactly? The original publisher isnt making money anymore for most of the old games. You are just filling the pockets of after market sellers. Émulation is amazing and wrongfully frowned upon. I have backed up complète romsets of most consoles from 80s and 90s myself. I only collect for the saturn now. In fact i built myself a sick classic console using retropie that plays 23 différent systems with tons of roms.

    I haven't watched the video yet but am pretty sure that Golden Axe 2 - The Revenge Of Death Adder is going to be featured, that game was screaming out for a home port and being the 2D powerhouse that it was the Saturn would have been the ideal candidate for a near arcade perfect port.

  • @SomeOrangeCat
    @SomeOrangeCat 5 лет назад +13

    For me: Star Wars Arcade. They were idiots for releasing it to the 32X instead. A Saturn port would have been more faithful and played more smoothly.

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  5 лет назад +5

      Agreed. That game would have been killer on the Saturn. They could have added a texture mapped mode to spruce up the presentation too.

    • @SomeOrangeCat
      @SomeOrangeCat 5 лет назад +3

      @@SegaLordX Agreed, though I would have settled for just the one original mode doing the arcade game justice. I hate that publishers can't retroactively claim games based on properties they own. We'd have releases of all kinds of stuff if they could. But as it stands Disney owns Star Wars, but Sega owns the code.

  • @ravagingwolverine

    I see someone else made this point that Fighters Megamix was likely conceived because they knew the Saturn was not up to doing a respectable port of Virtua Fighter 3, or was meant to fill a gap while they figured out how they could make VF3 happen. The timing of Megamix is consistent with that theory. And it was a great idea as well. I think it's reasonable that they at least considered using some kind of assistance cartridge to try to do VF3, especially since the RAM carts worked out for the 2D fighters and considering how versatile that cartridge port was in theory. Same with Saturn running Street Fighter 3. The only thing standing in the way of the system doing SF3 would be memory. It would all come down to whether the cart slot had any practical limitations on how much memory could be used and how much memory would be reasonably affordable.
    Golden Axe Revenge was one of many games lost to that transition period from about 1991-1994 give or take. These were games that were far too advanced for the 16-bit home systems, but came out far too early so they were already several years old by the time the Saturn and PS1 were available and could do them justice. And tastes were changing so that many of those games and genres were not in such demand as they may have been in 1992. In addition to Golden Axe, Sega's Spider-Man arcade game was another. The same thing happened with some Toaplan shooters like Dogyuun and Truxton 2. Somehow, the Genesis managed to run a playable version of Grind Stormer, but it wasn't the prettiest thing out there. That game running on the Genesis was a bit of a miracle. But there were a lot of games like those that had what we'd consider to be 32-bit-style graphics that were just out too early which worked against them getting ports, unfortunately. That seemed to be a factor in deciding on games to port. Only super-popular games like Out Run seemed to get ports if such games were more than a couple of years old.
    Great video as usual and a wonderful selection of games. I agree with all of it except for the games like Cool Riders that I just haven't ever played. But I have played a lot of AVP and others. Great stuff!

      It was the kind of game that Sega could have leaned on to give Saturn its own identity. Saturn was never going to "win" with the Playstation having the 3rd party support it had, and the massive list of exclusive games, so Sega needed to carve out its own niche, not follow in the same footsteps as its competitors.

    Both Shock Troopers
    Wrestlefest
    Alien Storm
    Altered Beast
    Golden Axe
    Golden Axe Revenge of Death Adder
    Shinobi
    Street Fighter 3 (with ram cart bigger than 4 mb)
    Marvel vs Capcom
    Punisher
    both TMNT games
    X-Men
    Sunset Riders
    Vendetta
    Captain America
    Arabian Fight
    Spider-Man
    Segasonic The Hedgehog
    SNK arcade games before the Neogeo
    Really wanted to see each of these arcade games on saturn even if some couldn't have been 100% perfect ports to the system. I also would have liked to have seen a Streets of Rage collection on the system or even a graphical remake of the games.
    Also really wanted to see Fantastic Night Dreams Cotton on the system since it got Cotton 2 and Boomerang but sadly it never happened. it could have been a direct arcade version too since the game is on sega's system 16B board while all other home versions of it were altered versions.

    Sega NEEDS to release a Sega Arcade Collection that has some of the titles that never came home. It'd sell like gangbusters on Switch. But unfortunately it seems that Sega is ashamed of much of its history. Or they lost the source code. I'm looking at you, Panzer Dragoon Saga.

    Along with Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder and Alien vs. Predator were a treasure trove of beat-em-ups locked to arcades forever, including The Punisher, Violent Storm, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Warriors of Fate, and others. Alien Odyssey from Martin Piper : Alien Odyssey. Yes I was working on the Saturn port alongside porting MAD video compression to the Saturn from the PC.
    MAD Video (Martin and Dave Video) compression was something a colleague and I had cooked up in out spare time while sharing a flat. It started life on the Archimedes and then ported to the PC at which point we sold the technology to Argument. It produced better visual results than AVC used on Creature Shock. This was in the day when typical home PCs couldn't decode MPEG in realtime so that's why other video compression systems existed in software.
    Anyway, it was about 50% complete when the plug was pulled. Don't recall why exactly. I was moved onto BRender projects at the time. This was when Argonaut was working with SGI to produce Firewalker which was a games development suite. Now that is a piece of gaming history and a whole story in itself.

    It's episodes like this, that really make hard (or more difficult at the very least) to be a passionate Sega fan, so many missed opportunities, so much neglect, poor decisions, it sucks. I'm referring to Sega as a company. Death Adder and other MD era Sega owned IP never being ported to me is a sign that Sega never wanted anything to do with its most successful console, the Genesis, while going forward with Saturn as you implied in your excellent "Why Saturn Failed" video, and that to me, is crazily absurd.

    By the time the Saturn came out in America, most of the wrestlers in WrestleFest had already left the WWF at the time, especially Hulk Hogan. So if a WrestleFest port were to happen, they'd have to completely update the roster with guys like Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Razor Ramon, Diesel, Undertaker, etc.
    At least there was WrestleMania: The Arcade Game.

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  5 лет назад +1

      To my knowledge, there is only one game released outside of Japan that used the RAM cartridges for Saturn. That's Marvel Super Heroes and its compatibility with the 1MB RAM cart. You can play the game without it, but you get more frames using it. Few of the Capcom Street Fighter games even used the RAM carts. Pocket Fighter, Street Fighter Zero 3 and the VS games being the only ones. Everything else that used them from Capcom(Vampire Savior, Cyberbots, D&D Collection, etc) was Japan only. Games like Street Fighter The Movie, Street Fighter Zero 1 and 2, and Street Fighter Collection, did not use the RAM carts.

    Saturn ports might've saved me a lot of money I've since spent on arcade pcbs. Wrestlefest wasn't too pricey, but I spent a good amount of cash to get a good working GI Joe, and Saturn could've done that one. Punisher, Ninja Baseball Batman, Shock Troopers 2nd Squad, and dozens more definitey were more expensive to get and ship boards for than Saturn discs would've cost.

      Getting PCB's and MVS carts back then was really hit and miss in the area I was in. A few amusement companies had torn up machines they'd junk and have boards for, but it was rarely anything of note. It wasn't until ebay and internet showed up full bore than those things were easy to get.

    Always had that kind of feeling for sega like.. LoveHate.. started with Megadrive... soi got the Megacd.... they didn't support the mega cd like they should, trying to create better version of megadrive games or at least exclusive games (i don't even consider the tons of FMV like games at all)... when the 32x come out, i thought could be a good idea to buy one... i'm glad i didn't because sega did not support it with quality games.... so i wait to get me a saturn.. loved it... wanted a new street of rage....a new eternal champions... a new sonic... and tons of arcades 2d games... the amazing spiderman... asterix... karate blazers... AvP, the last golden axe, and so much more games which would perfectly fit in the saturn collection... so they were never released.. and plus the console was almost killed by sega itself creating and launching the dreamcast... so stopped to create any content for saturn really early... so it was so disrespectful against their own customers .. that's why i stopped to buy consoles. Other than that... sony was going on creating games and letting to the SW house to keep going on producing new sw for the playstation one... if i don't remember wrong until 2000 and few years...
    Loved the tons of great games i got... the unforgettable releases and the fun i had with sega consoles... but i hate the way they treated the customers... the way we were abandoned every time sega suddenly focused on a new project...They finally failed as Company because they failed their customers more than once...

    Those VF3 screenshots were actually from an old model 3 emulator that was still in its early stages, hence the odd look . Personally I think that had Sega ported VF3 to the Saturn , even the masters at AM2 would probably have ended up with a game that wasn't that much better looking than Dead Or Alive. It may well be that due to the stage elevation, it would have been harder to use the VDP2 for the floor, which of course would have hurt performance even more. It may well be why Sega decided not to put any more effort into it given the state of things by 1998/9
    It may well be that SF3 wasn't ported to the Saturn exactly because it would have needed some extensive reworking, while the engine it used for its previous CPS2 games, could be used with SFZ3. On a personal level ,I would have liked to see Marvel Vs Capcom on the Saturn. It was a CPS2 game after all .

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  5 лет назад +1

      I think the VF3 conversation becomes infinitely more interesting when you consider the existence of a cartridge accelerator. Just how much more it could have added is truly interesting.
      SF3 was almost a pure money decision I feel. Capcom likely would have needed a larger RAM cart, and since it didn't already exist, every copy of SF3 sold would have needed it. The return on that, coupled with a disappearing NA and EU market, led them to pass on the idea to the DC.

    • @lightdark28
      @lightdark28 5 лет назад

      @UCT5qzgZ-Ta_5VRX5oiw1KpQ SFA2 on the SNES also used additional hardware in the cart to get that, and it was a pretty cut down port.
      Not saying Capcom couldn't have pulled it off , heck , the monetary incentive led them to do a half decent version of MvsC and SFZ3 on the PS1, so they certainly could, but the work involved would have been too much given the situation

    • @lightdark28
      @lightdark28 5 лет назад

      @@SegaLordX Ive personally heard mixed things about that cart, including that it was more of a project at Sega America than at the Japanese branch.
      Thing about the cart Im wondering about is exactly what kind of hardware Sega would have packed in there? one of the options circa 1997-8 would have been something from 3DFX, but that wouldn't account for the fact that the Saturn's SH2s would have been a bottleneck at that point.

    • @SegaLordX

      Yeah, Like I said in the vid, it was needing a roster update and a few new play modes for a home version. Though Technos also could have licensed the engine to whoever had the WCW license for them to use. I would have been happy with that too.

    The Sega games and RE2 are the ones that I felt that way for on Saturn as well. I didn't realize SFIII was in 97. I'm sure that one has mostly to do with the DC taking priority already, while Capcom worked on stuff that was further in development for Saturn, SFZ3 and FF Revenge. 2 other notable ones that we knew had a planned Saturn port (questionable if any development actually took place though) were the original GTA, and Metal Gear Solid. MGS2 also made it to pre-production for DC, but no actual development began on hardware either. I have heard for ages about Revenge of Death Adder being the best sequel, but have yet to play it. Sega is so far out of touch with it's arcade roots now. These would make for great compilation volumes to sell in store, or individual digital releases now, all platforms. I think I recall the original excuse for no port of Revenge of Death Adder was because of the suicide battery. We have the rom now, and Sega hasn't shied away from using a content from the internet before!
    I loved reading about the rumored possibilities of the Saturn port of VF3. Supposably it was finalized and ready for production, but pulled at the last minute so as not to cannibalize the Dreamcast and it's VF3tb conversion. Supposably the Saturn version ran on stock hardware and AM2 was able to achieve the best graphics using the latest libraries pushing 750,000 polygons per second, at 30fps, running in standard resolution (also supposably the footage of Saturn Shenmue we saw could push a solid 1 million polys at 15fps at standard resolution). If any of that were true, even though it likely would have looked pixelated, it still would have been quite a feat to see running with that many polys smoothly on a Saturn with no upgrades. Furthermore, if such a thing were true, they could have filled the DC conversion with extras, and gone for a better than arcade perfect port like Soul Calibur did, to give reason for getting it on Dreamcast. As it was, there was no chance of VF3 coming to the west anyway at that point, so it still would have sold fine outside of Japan, worst case scenario.
