A quick 2001 refresh to a "Dreamcast 2" that was just a Naomi spec board with DVD instead of GD is an alternate timeline I always dreamed of.

@@Dizzykitty817 Both would be great. However, Sega being able to stay in hardware would've been the best. MS initially wanted a Sega partnership in hardware development
with Sega's name selling the console. That would've been the best and most realistic scenario. MS went all out with the Xbox's specs. Cost efficiency wasn't a big worry then.
So, if Sega had chose to be a hardware partner and could've realistically included Naomi 2 integration, DC1 back compat, 2nd gen VMU's, and pioneered the virtual console
with downloadable Sega classics ranging from Master System, Genesis, CD, 32X (Saturn might be too big of an ask), and especially arcade classics- well, hail to the king!
Why is everyone always so obsessed with the Dreamcast having DVD. It wouldn't have made any difference in the grand scheme of things.

@@JoshuaKittle The quickest citation I can give would be Lady Decade's *SEGA XBOX* video. Other than that the coverage online is pretty sparse. IIrc Modern Vintage Gamer has a video that covers this too. I hope this helped.
Initial D Arcade stage was one I played quite a bit, it supported player cards as well to save progress, records and cars as well.

Christ, VF4 looks insane on the naomi2, even by today's standards, that lighting was 🔥. It would be cool to see a video on the Taito TypeX. It's a much more recent arcade cabinet that ran games like Blazblue and P4Arena.
What's there to talk about? The Type X is just a PC with security dongles.
@GattlingCombo idk what it is about hardware design but I've noticed a lot of games have very impressive lighting that is sometimes better than the rest of the game's graphics. Perfect dark (n64 almost looks like a dreamcast or ps2 game in terms of lighting, sleeping dogs (xbox 360/ps3 also looks like a ps4/xbox one game in terms of lighting) come to mind

I can see OG Xbox being the unofficial Dreamcast 2. Dreamcast had Windows CE as the backup/alternate development tools. Microsoft considered buying Sega back in the early 2000s (after Nintendo declined), things went pretty far but because of Sega's demands that they use their hard ware for Xbox and/or make the Xbox hardware backwards compatible with Dreamcast things didn't happen. Sega should just had a team focus on doing translations of previous generational software (Arcade/Master System/Genesis/Sega CD/32x/Game Gear/Saturn/Dreamcast) to OG Xbox while having other teams work on new games.

Japan drives on the same side as the UK, and in Japan they have very strict emission laws, so about 30,000 miles most cars get exported to the UK, that's why we have a lot of Scooby's and Lancer's imported from Japan.
They should have brought that driving simulator to Pearson who do the driving text exams, would have made a big impact to help with the backlog caused by Covid.

I was one of those who bought the dreamcast back on 9/9/99, I felt dreamcast way ahead of its time, loved it and sad to see how quickly it failed. Would be great to see an official new sega console someday

One of my favourite consoles of all time and what incredible launch titles too such as Soul Caliber and Ready 2 Rumble boxing. It was a special system with so many good games but unfortunately no DvD support and easily hackable...
... didn't even have to hack it. Only needed a modchip if you wanted to have region free on actual gd-rom disc games! Like with the Saturn before, Sega valued Karaoke burned disc-compatibility over basic copy protection 🤷♂️

Many RUclipsrs have covered the Naomi 2 comprehensively.
Sega should have brought VF4 to the Xbox, or XB360 to do it justice. I play the PS2 version on emulator in 4K. The textures can look bad upscaled, but the geometry is not that bad.
If this Naomi 2 is strictly an arcade-only console, then the US is missing out because the arcade industry here is deader than my chances at steady employment.

I remember that about 6 years ago an initiative came up with a project where games would be purchased by a store. This project was presented to Sega and was very similar to the new Atari VCS, there's nothing more to talk about This project.
A Dreamcast 1.5, but more powerful than a PS2! At 200MHz, it still comes in under the X-Box in CPU speed, but blows the X-Box away in RAM! Naomi 2 was some potent arcade hardware for it's time 👍😎👍
Pretty sure the cabinet for the driving simulator is pretty much a reskin of the f355 challenge Deluxe cabinet with shifter and indicators oriented according to its region. Always thought of the difference Naomi 1 and 2 more in line with the way Xbox has split their console from Series S and Series X. Loving the arcade stuff and looking forward to platform comparisons play Crazy Taxi our house of the dead. Or Chihiro titles that never made it to their home equivalent Play namco's wangan Midnight maximum tune series or a proper Initial D arcade

There was not a sign or stuttering like there was in some PS2 games. The clocks were so much faster.
If Sega actually produced a new Dreamcast 2 console and actually became a reality object I would absolutely purchase a console and SEGA may even give SONY a run for their money and make em sweat at the collar!!

The GameCube was also a successor in a way too with the Sonic Adventure games and ofc Crazy Taxi

Noami 1 wasnt a Dreamcast pro...its just DC with twice RAM, VRAM and sound RAM. Most Naomi ports to DC are technically arcade perfect. Differences are almost unnoticeable. Hikaru is in fact Dreamcast/Naomi Pro. Naomi 2 IS effectively Dreamcast 2. Is still a tech miracle PS2 could have handled ports from it, even if downgraded, specially VF 4.

The NAOMI doesn't use the 80586 unlike the CHIHIRO which uses a custom Pentium III Coppermine Processor and a NVidia Graphics chip and twice the RAM of the Original Microsoft XBOX.

A lot of people crave a "Dreamcast II" out of nostalgia, but they can't seem to understand that if Sega ever did decide to re-enter the console-producing market, the resulting product would be something completely different -- the hypothetical console would be as different as the Playstation 4 is to the Sega Saturn; not a "Dreamcast II."
Every feature that made the Dreamcast revolutionary, advanced, or just ahead of the curve? It's all standard now on even mobile phone gaming. Phones!
The more level-headed people out there, and this would also be the most realistic outcome in such a hypothetical scenario, just want a new Sega console that not only has new games but also older games from Sega's prior console libraries, not a Dreamcast rehash or revision or "II."

That's not all of the classic sega franchises like daytona USA , golden axe , shinobi ect but I'm sure many people would buy a sega console for games in those franchises I mentioned
@csguy9282 A new Sega console would sell well if it were well built, yeah, but my point is that it wouldn't be a Dreamcast II as much as a Playstation 4 would be the "Saturn II."
Too much time has passed, and it'd make as much sense as Sega in the early 2000's making a Master System II.
It'd be an entirely new console, with entirely new design paradigms, that'd just play Sega's old libraries.
A lot of people can't make the distinction, unfortunately.

NAOMI 2 came out in 2000 and was short lived. It only had 4 times the memory and graphics memory of a Dreamcast, and twice the memory of the original NAOMI. By then the Dreamcast was already on the decline, and pretty much Sega was done making console games on their own so a few of the ports went to the PS2 or Gamecube.

@dionisis5206 nah, everything got ported over. The controller is the same but with another analog. They were ever going to use vmus at first, hence the big Xbox logo on the Duke controllers. Both systems were based off windows ce(directx)Most games that were in development for the dc went to Xbox instead(including halo)...then the ps2 ports started happening.
