i had assumed that the "hunting siblings in nest" line meant that they used to play with each other amd as times passed they grew apart/some died but this is so much worse while still making sense. great video 👍
Great video! I'm glad someone finally put together all this information. Now people don't have to look through the whole thing every time they want Hunter lore. I just have a few things to add: For the Void Tendrils entry, the Hunter is referring to killing the bugs that are thinking about the Void's history, not the killing Void Tendrils themselves. For Hornet, it has been confirmed by Team Cherry while developing Silksong that Hornet is "a Huntress" probably referring to this. Based on this, I suspect that the qualifications for being a Hunter are being offspring of the Beast, but this is just a theory. You also didn't include the dream nail dialogue available just before picking up the Hunter's Mark, in which the Hunter hopes that you return later to hunt him, (another very strange aspiration), possibly indicating that he is never planning on leaving hallownest.
Up until the getting the Hunter's Mark, I thought that he was a spider, because he said that he has siblings, talking as if he had multiple of them, and also has multiple eyes.
What I find funny is he doesn’t imply in the entries for the Hollow Knight and the Radiance that he hasn’t fought them, meaning he may well have fought the Hollow Knight and the Radiance before.
the first thing that comes into my head when i see The Hunter in Hollow Knight is for some reason Hunter from Rain World (the strawberry SCUG) no i do not know how that happens
That would be a cool mod, especially since the hunter dies after a certain amount of cycles. It could make a harder challenge as well as maybe some kind of custom hunter dialogue.
The entombed husk’s seem to be filled with the infection so it might be a long shot, but maybe the Hunter peered through the light and saw the radiance.
For those good enough in french, we have someone named Sulfury who theorized the Hunter could have been the Black Wyrm, a big one hour long theory that addresses everything, reasons and objections, including the colosseum corpse. I've never seen it elsewhere and it seems so obscure it would be insane if it was intentional and nearly no one made the link, however at the end of his video, you're pretty much convinced!
I wonder if everyone on their first playthrough gets to a point where they're just fucking around and then randomly start reading the journal entries, cuz I did his comment on the mawlurk lives rent free in my head also this is a cool vid, I'd be down to watch more stuff like this
0:24 The Knight is small and all. *knight laughing in shade lord* The Hunter really has a sense of humour lmaooo This video is really put well, might be different than usual but it’s really good :D And I might miss or be late to a lot of you videos because… school :(
Uh? Did this "everything we know about the Hunter" video forgot about arguably the most important thing about the Hunter??? The journal itself. Not just what's written in it. That's especially a waste given how this community seems to have a lot of misconceptions and false assumptions about that artifact given how unintuitive its functioning is. I've seen people say that the Hunter wrote it, that it's carved in stone or something like that, other say that he must have fought everything in it or have a weird omniscience, I've even said some say this thing has no lore because it is entirely gameplay-focused despite being an existing object in-game. All of that is false. Hopefully I made some time ago a giant wall of text explaining all of that based on the work of one named Sulfury. For now it has been condemned to rot on a random Ccmaci community post, this looks like a perfect opportunity to make it actually seen by people. 👀 I don't think that the fact that the Hunter's Journal's functioning is gameplay-focused means that that it has no lore. It''s just not intuitive. In fact it must necessarily be partially unintuitive as we know how small it is so it can't hold all of the informations that it's supposed to if it worked like a stone tablet. Another unintuitive part of its functioning is directly stated in-game when you first talk to the Hunter: "At first the text may seem difficult to discern, but a learned hunter will come to understand its words.", it explains why the entries are unlocked by combating enemies but it doesn't make much sense if you don't think about it to much. ALSO BE PREPARED BECAUSE IT'S A ENORMOUS AND GIGANTIC WALL OF FRICKING *TEXT.* THANK TEAM CHERRY FOR THIS COMPLICATED LORE. So here's how the Hunter's journal likely functions: - *It probes into its user's mind, it's linked to it and adapts to the user's hunting experience.* That explains this previous Hunter quote and is backed up by the fact that entries can be unlocked before you get it, but obviously only those that correspond to what you've already hunted (unless you never killed a Crawlid I guess but that's probably really just a game limitation that's unlikely to be remarked. :^\). It is opposed to the common assumption that it is just written in an undecipherable language that you somehow understand without analysing it but by hunting, which makes no sense. - *Nothing was written in it, it generates its content spontaneously. The Hunter's mind is instilled in it so that it can do that.* That explains how the journal contains entries about creatures the Hunter can't met, and that we know thanks to his comments that he has never met. His comments thus being an accurate reproduction of what he would've felt and thought if he would've seen you hunting. - *It has a very strong sensibility to the spiritual realm, being able to intercept dreams.* Nothing really hard to prove with the quotes from the ghosts and grimm troupe and with the entry got from the Path of Pain's memory. The last points also goes in this direction. - *It is a receiver. An eye perceiving the spiritual world to give a proceeding of what it sees.* It interprets all of its user's sensations when hunting to give pertinent informations about the creatures hunted. Being the relay of the Hunter's thoughts, it sometimes gives the priority to other messages from another source. This explaining the previously mentioned quotes from the ghosts and grimm troupe. From what I've said by now, it can seem like, through his journal, the Hunter has a sort of omniscience that can't really be justified. But there's two things that I think are really just here just because it's a video game: the names of the enemy and most of the time their species, all knowledge is supposed to have been forgotten after the kingdom's fall but it would be weird to not have the enemies' name; the journal is associated with a quest and is associated with a completion goal, talking to the Hunter gives you a hint at where you're at in this completion, like a progression bar, implying that he knows exactly what the journal should contain to be complete, but it's not really the case, they serve only to give the player an idea of their progress in this completion in a purely game-esque manner. A proof of that is simply that the entirety of the entries don't have to be unlocked in order to finish the Hunter's quest, meaning that he can judge the Journal as complete even if it is objectively not. Finally I'll discuss how the magical properties of the journal concretely manifest onto the physical object, so basically, what it looks like. In the game, there's ever only one representation of the Hunter's journal, shown when you get it. It's not useful on its own but it can be compared to other objects in the game: the wanderer's journals. They look similar, meaning that the name "journal" refer to some characteristics. A note found in the game's file list of words and says how they should be used in the game, probably so that Team Cherry can preserve the game's consistency. One of those words is *"book": " not sure if these exist? Likely not. Journals exist. Tablets exist. Parchment exists. Journals look like they're made of stone. the relic dealer references parchment made from spider silk, but its not comme."* . The Hunter's journal could've simply be an empty book with empty pages that fill up as you progress but there are no no books. Only journals, stone tablets that store informations, with a message on their single face. The Wanderer's journal have this information sculpted, carved or written in them while the Hunter's journal's change. Given its apparence, seemingly covered in a sort of dripping goo, evokes that fact that *the symbols on the Hunter's journal could be moving, sliding, stretching, appearing and disappearing, changing completely to adapt the content of the entries for its user.* It could even display only one article at the time, pretty much like we see it in the game, the symbols rearranging as the entries change. But given its mystical and great powers and properties, there might be another object that it can be compared to... *A stone marked by strange symbols, carrying a message that interacts with the mind of the one that consults it.* That's what this journal is. Does that sound familiar? "Higher beings, these words are for you alone.", the King's, the Wyrm's, lore tablets. In fact, it seems that there's some sort of opposition in the Pale King's lore tablet and the Hunter's journal in their similar functioning as indirect vectors of their authors' voices. To hear the Pale Wyrm's voice, you must be a Higher Being, it's only with this condition, totally independent of your will, that you'll hear his voice resonating in your spirit, imposing on you. The Pale Wyrm bases its communication on the principle of the *Innate Election* (in its theological sense, like a divine election). To read the Hunter's journal, you'll have to deserve it. No predestination, just a submission the dangerous and tedious exercise of the hunt. You will have to understand on your own what it means to be a Hunter to share its mundane remarks as well as its most existential interrogations. The Hunter bases its communication on the principle of the *Acquired Admission* . If the symbols of the Hunter's Journal are indeed moving but still symbols "written" on its face like its appearance suggests, that makes another opposition. The King's voice creeps in the minds, the bugs are forced to ear its messages, while the Hunter's notes still leave the choice to be known or not, adapting to the surrounding spiritual signals. The Pale Wyrm acts symbolically as a *Master* , the one that masters and spreads knowledge, controlling the individuals. The Hunter acts symbolically as a *Novice* , that questions himself and the world while gathering informations by himself to learn and understand. These objects thus reveal by their simple functioning a part of their creators' personalities. This comparison, and especially if it's an opposition, is pretty interesting on its own. Maybe there's more to it. Maybe it can explain how the Hunter is able to make such a powerful and mystical artifact like his journal is. But the weird connections and oppositions between the Pale Wyrm and the Hunter is a totally other rabbit hole that I won't dive into today. 👀 IN CONCLUSION of this long-ass wall of text of a comment about the complicated lore of a minor part of Hollow Knight, *the Hunter's journal is a strange powerful and mystical artifact. It acts as a receiver, an eye perceiving the spiritual world to give a proceeding of what it sees thanks to its strong sensibility to the spiritual realm, probing into its user's mind to adapt to their hunting experience and, with the Hunter's mind is instilled in it, generate with its symbols moving on a sort of goo spontaneously its content: an accurate reproduction of what the Hunter would've felt and thought if he would've seen you hunting, or rarely, something else, a memory intercepted from a dream. For the journal to receive those informations, you will have to endure as a novice the Hunter's admission, and acquire they intimate understanding of what its is to be a true Hunter.*
