Welp, I finally did an animation more than 1 minute :D
Thanks to those who sent me their ocs, it was fun drawing them.
The animation has bits of mistakes because I didnt get to fix them due to an undoable accident :')

1:31-1:43 This part of the video hit me the most: When the main vessel of this story notices their one of their siblings beside them silently hyperventilating, probably at the thought of being thrown into The Abyss, the first thing they did was to comfort them by placing their hand on their shoulder and offering their hand for them to take. These two simple acts of kindness could have possibly been the reason why they were thrown into The Abyss: The perfect vessel was suppose to be completely hollow, without any types of thoughts and feelings. The main vessel showed empathy, which immediately made him ‘imperfect’.
The main vessel in the video is lost kin fyi. I wasn't expecting the focus of the video to be lost kin but honestly it fits so well. Also I agree, that part was great, really showed how messed up the whole thing was.
@@chuckles2364 Are you sure? The horns are quite different. This vessel has a branching horn on its left that points upwards while Lost Kin has two separated crooked horns, as well as a short horn in the back instead of this one's quite tall secondary horn on its right side.

@Bewinged Turtle I'm pretty sure, both the Hollow Knight and Ghost are present in this video, and no other vessel looks anything like Lost Kin. I think it'd be weird to specifically make an oc that looks exactly like lost kin but actually isn't. I'm pretty sure they just didn't draw them exactly as they are in game.

you see approximately 2 vessels that got out aside from you

-greenpath vessel (1st hornet fight)
meaning that you're not the only one to make it out of hallownest, for what we know, there could even be a good amount of vessels hidden in somewhere, alive and with emotions
There are also multiple vessels in the nosk fight room
I like this theory, and it also implies something else: That the Pale King likely had something to do with some of the vessels escaping/leaving the Abyss. Since he’s the only one who can open the Abyss door, thanks to being the King, he could have let them all out into the world, in the hope of having more possible Vessels to take over for the Hollow Knight if it should fail.
This explains some of the White Lady’s dialogue, where she states that she had been expecting a new Vessel, or something like the Knight to arrive to get the half of the Kingsoul charm.
It also explains the main player character, as they had somehow left the Abyss and made it out of Hallownest, into the wastelands. The main problem with this theory is that PK had already found the Hollow Knight, as shown in the birthplace cutscene, at which point he likely shut the door to the Abyss and wrote the lore tablet, meaning any more Vessels couldn’t have left the Abyss after he closed it up. However, considering the fact that the Hollow Knight failed, and that more possible vessels to extend the Radiance’s imprisonment could have been a good backup plan, the idea that the Pale King could have let out Vessels after the sealing of the Black Egg seems pretty legit.

Man, I remember when I first made it into the abyss and I was so fucking scared. There isn't much down there, but then you look down and the floor is literally made out of vessels. Then, you go into the floor and get the void heart. That entire room is probably like a couple dozen feet deep. There must have been thousands. Actually, just looking at the abyss, maybe even millions. At first I was terrified. But now, I am very sad. Those poor vessels. Especially the lost kin. His fate was arguably worse.

@@michaeldemianiuk4358 Definitely children. Listen to the White Lady again, they were their offspring. Crafted to be less emotional, but still their literal flesh and blood or whatever higher beings have that made them able to withstand the void.
I have a headcanon that most of the vessels stayed in the Abyss instead of venturing out into Deepnest, because it was too dangerous, and only a few brave ones, like the player vessel, the Greenpath vessel, and the broken vessel, left together with the plan of traveling back around to the other side of the Abyss entrance, and finding a way to open it to free the other vessels. But things went wrong, Nosk killed most of them in Deepnest, and the survivors all got separated. The Knight abandoned Hallownest entirely and only the Broken Vessel made it to the Ancient Basin. It's so sad, thinking about how close BK got, only to die just short of the door, either to Hornet or something else. It's even possible that BK actually did reach the door, but without the King's brand, they couldn't open it, which is an even more sad possibility.
You know what's so depressing about the vessels? The perfect vessel was supposed to be completely hollow, without any type of thoughts and feelings, that means that every single vessel that was thrown into the abyss had thoughts and feelings in some capacity, not making them much different from actual children.
Well, The Ghost / Wanderer / Knight / Whathaveyou was originally down there as well. There's a pathway looping back to the start that you can go through via the Abyss.
Considering that even they eventually fail (assuming they trap Radiance), I think what the intent is is that all life created for this purpose was guaranteed to fail. Since they all had emotion.
Well, it makes sense to think this, but you don't really *know* if they all had emotion. The HK could have been one of the only odd balls, for all we know.

Since Hornet isn't a failure because she was meant to have emotion, it's safe to assume that most of the failures were thinking, feeling beings.
No voice to cry suffering, yes. No will to break, maybe. No mind to think, certainly not.
Add onto this the Radiance's infection of Lost Kin (a creature which dreams) and you've got a recipe for the genocide of lots of thinking 'failures'.

I stand by what I said, cause I think his video is full of mental gymnastics to make a point that's wrong. It's a shame people feel the need to point me towards his trite so regularly.
EDIT: Sorry about coming off abrasively. But dear lord I hate it when people point me to a random person's video on an idea and laud it as fact because it's a video and that seems to add some weird validity to it. It's a pet peeve.

When you come to think about it, the vessel we play as ends up just like the hollow knight if we end up doing the side quests or doing anything that doesn't have to do with just opening the black egg temple and taking the hollow knight's place as a true vessel, doing as much as talking to Elder Bug ends up showing that the vessel we play as might have a semblance of emotion or thought and therefore will fail to hold the Radiance inside of them just like the Hollow Knight is failing right now.
So the only "true" way to get the first ending where you take his place is by just doing what's necessary to open the black egg temple and *never* get out from the path, ignore all NPCs and just go straight to it, no thoughts or feelings, just an objective.
On the other hand: if you embrace such feelings, thoughts and follow what Hornet says about how you might "bring a different ending to this" and get what you need for the "dream no more" ending, then you succeed on bringing peace to Hollownest and taking the Radiance down exactly because unlike the Hollow Knight you actually decided to embrace the thoughts and feelings and use that will to bring the Radiance down once and for all.

@@adhiprajna4127 I meant more of the sidequests you interact with NPCs, the charms and whatnot that you find around the world are fine to use, but I never said that ending would be the canon ending.
Personally for me, the canon ending is the dream no more ending.
I know a year old comment and all but the knight does have emotion you might be hollow at the beginning but your character saves people, puts up with zote, enjoys hotsprings and willingly follow hornets advice things a pure hollow entity wouldn't do as none of it would serve its purpose also nosk chooses the for of loved ones and in his God home version he takes the form of hornet showing that the knight does care for hornet half sibling or not

The vessel comforting the other vessel is so sad because the vessels might not have known to be empty and that being kind is what would kill them.
For all those unaware of the lore of Hollow Knight: the Pale King was trying to save Hallownest from an infection (the Radiance). He wanted to find something perfect that could take in the infection and keep it from spreading. This is what is referred to as the "Pure Vessel" or the "Hollow Knight". The knight had to be hollow of personality, ambition, etc to be a perfect vessel for the infection. To do this, the Pale King teamed up with the white lady to make tons of vessels. LARGE SPOILER INCOMING: you are one of these vessels, but just in case the name of the game fooled you, you are not the hollow knight; the hollow knight is the final boss and it's super tragic because in the middle of the boss fight he literally starts stabbing himself because he's so miserable. Anyway, as I was saying, you aren't the hollow knight, but you are one of the hundreds of thousands of vessels. The part that I'm getting to is what's portrayed in the animation. All of these vessels were thrown into an deep dark pit known as the abyss and the Pale King thinks that the one that makes it out is the true hollow knight. The lore is sort of hand wavey around that part because THK (using this to refer to the Hollow Knight from now on) wasn't the only vessel to make it out; clearly you made it out, the Broken Vessel (Lost Kin) made it out, the vessel that Hornet is next to at the start of her first fight made it out, and there's a few others. I think Zote and Elderbug are also vessels but idk.
Anyway, it's super effed up. Beating up on THK whilst he's stabbing himself to try and end his life quicker just makes me sad. The any% ending ends with you taking in the infection and from the looks of it, taking THK's place temporarily. To get rid of the infection permanently, the true ending makes you defeat the Radiance who I think is the cause of the infection.

What makes it worse is that the "pure vessel" that got picked wasn't really pure and if you dream nail him during the fight it shows that he is trying not to think for the sake of the kingdom

What makes this sadder is that the vessels weren't even trained. He just took the first one, and left the rest to die in the abyss.
It could be argued, actually, that the Pale King had been waiting for a while and that a handful of vessels had made it up to the top, only to be pushed back down when they expressed emotion. Of course, those falling vessels in the birthplace memory cutscene could’ve just fallen due to their own failures at platforming, but isn’t it much sadder to assume otherwise?

@@wesleyward5901 I mean to be fair, the other vessels probably had to somehow make it to the top with kings pass gear, cause even though we have wings and all that for gameplays sake, there is no explanation in the lore why we would have that, so most likely the other vessels didn't even have claw or dash

I want a Hollow Knight game where every character is a vessel, like a little community of vessels with little houses, and you go on a quest as a vessel to save your vessel friend.
That sounds like a very good idea.
Maybe the Vessels could be divided into several groups like one group is based like a church and another is warlike.

Elder Spirit. The oldest of the Vessels and the unofficial leader of the Vessels in Voidvale.
Dreamer. A Vessel that dreams big.
Priest Shade. A Vessel that makes a live by summoning the Shades of deceased Vessels.
Wayfinder. A Vessel that sells maps and is usually found outside of Voidvale.
Shield Master Stal. A Vessel that's a defensive type warrior and has trained several students to become warriors.

The story of the shades/failed vessels is so sad. They were imperfect, just for a second, and then they lose their life. They felt so alive that they felt emotion. They were just born. They didn’t chose to feel. They didn’t want to go out like this. And now, they’re at the bottom of some pit, damned to eternal sorrow, with their only comfort being their brothers and sisters right next to them who feel the same pain.
The vessels are actually genderless, the only one of the pale kings children to have a gender was Hornet, which is why the white lady refers to her as “the gendered one”.
The way I see it that makes it even sadder because they didn’t have names, genders, identities, or even thoughts. In the abyss when they saw each other all they knew was that it was another creature like them, their kin. In the dark, alone together, suffering, trying not to feel.

@@acedaybreaker2545 The only unity the vessels had was the Void, no matter how many "emotions" and "care" they had, they were all born from the Void. They are all abyssal in nature, all ways looking at the vital and efficient way to destroy and consume. It seems however the OC community dosen't like that fact.
@@GrievyRZ Their unity was before the void when they were just the children of the Pale King and White Lady, they then were killed and had the void invade their minds and bodies. So currently all the ones in the abyss are all made of void but they weren't always. And even so the void didn't strip them of their thoughts and feelings since the Hollow Knight actually still has emotions even after taking on the void.

Electro Shock Are you serious. You say it didn’t have emotions until it had them? That doesn’t make any sense. The great folly of the Pale King is that every Vessel was impure. You can’t just feel emotions if you can’t feel emotions. The Hollow Knight could always feel emotions, but it hid them and pushed them away to try and make the Pale King proud. What it didn’t realize was the feeling of wanting to not feel made it impure.
This video, this is the video that got me into the Hollow Knight Fandom and lore, leaving me to play one of the most amazing games I’ve ever played. I don’t regret it. Thank you for this video.

The one thing that breaks my heart. It is about how many vessels were thrown into the abyss. They never got to live a life. The pale king gave them life only to just take it away again. I respect his dedication to stop radiance but the amount of vessels lost was unneeded
Drew Blencowe The failed vessels could be infected, that’s why they were imperfect. Only a pure vessel, like the knight, was completely resistant to the Radiance. But yeah, could have made good soldiers

I'm crying, I never thought about the siblings like this, and you've portrayed this idea in such a way that it immediately puts me on board.
It's true the story of the Children of the King, including the main three, tell a morbid tale of children being born simply to be weapons and, when they failed to be perfect, killed... And the main three are just what happens when one manages to fit their fate as a weapon, when one is given a different fate, and when one manages to escape it all only to come back and see the ashes of his past brought back to life... None of them lead to a good ending...
Which is why the Hollow Knight music is so sad, and why the moment the Knight meets up with all the souls of his siblings born of darkness, in battle, it sparks the true final end and the moment they all finally are given rest from their torment

Even if she wasn't in it as one of the ghosts, she is freed (or bound) from her parent's choices by what happens at the end of the story.. My point is that it's child abuse and nobody got out of this unscathed

What's sadder is, if you look at the Pure Vessel's cut dream nail dialogue when you fight the pantheon, it says:
"Do not think...
Do not speak...
Do not hope..."
I think we can gather from this that, in a way, the Hollow Knight knew it was imperfect, but still tried to be hollow in order to contain the radiance.
It wanted to contain the radiance so badly that it hollowed itself, but the fact that it wanted to contain the radiance and save the kingdom so desperately is why it was imperfect.

1:00 this particular shot gave me chills. I don't know much about the game but it shows in this scene how disposable these creatures are. All of them are in a neat line, no one out of place. And even though they all have their own unique horns to distinguish themselves from each other, they all wear the same cape, as if trying to smother their individuality. The music also hits deep.
When the two fight, I can't help but think they're trying to get approval from someone, or to prove to themself that they're worth living.
Edit: how could I forget when two of them hold hands. It's such a bittersweet moment. It shows such a sincere kindness to them, and I can't help but think that it's because of how they struggled with being noticed. No one should have to suffer alone

The idea is there are millions of vessels and the pale king (their dad) wanted one, the hollow knight (hes next to the horn dude) to contain a infection, the sad thing is the hollow knight couldn’t do his job because he wanted to save the kingdom, he wanted his fathers aproval
Said infection could only be contained by a being with no thoughts and emotions, so the king threw any who did show emotions into a pit/The Abyss. The hollow knight(guy who sparred with the vessel this video is focused on) seemed to be void of emotions and thoughts, but they weren’t, which is why the plan failed. And yes, the lil horn guys are called vessels, which is really sad to me.
Yeah, whatever the heck those creatures are, they sure are disposable!
So in the game, a new god moves into an already inhabited area, and the old followers of the old gold all start worshipping the new god, and the new god becomes king. The old god gets pissy and starts infecting everyone through their dreams.
The king gets worried that his great kingdom will fall to ruin, and so he and another god (that’s his ally) have a bunch of kids (they’re bugs, so they come out as eggs) and throw said eggs into the Abyss, which is literally just a big pit of darkness (void). The eggs get ‘corrupted’ by the void, and the king’s intentions are to have a being with a shell of god and insides of void, so that they alone could be a vessel for the infection (with no dreams to speak of, the old god supposedly wouldn’t have been able to do anything).
So thousands of these children were created, and in the end, the king basically stood at the entrance to the abyss, and those thousands of vessels tried to climb up to reach him and his bright light. They all fell (there’s a scene in the actually game where you yourself make this climb and the bodies of the vessels are just falling down around you and it’s pretty nuts and depressing) and in the end, only one vessel made it out of the Abyss with the king: the Pure Vessel, otherwise known as the Hollow Knight. The Abyss was sealed off by the king, and it would never be opened again.
(In game, the floor of the Abyss is *covered* in the bodies of the vessels, cracked shells lying every which way. The bodies make up the floor and walls of the birthplace. The shades of the vessels show up as flying entities, identical to the player’s shade, and attack you, but if you have the Void Heart [essentially meaning that you know that the player character is also a vessel] they just look at you and disappear)
THK got ‘trained to pure form’ (even though they’re bigger than all of the other vessels they’re all roughly the same age) and was taught how to fight for some reason. They were then locked into the Black Egg Temple, where they were held by chains and a seal of binding that kept them and the Infection contained. Hallownest (the kingdom) continued on, eternally.
Except it didn’t, cause THK wasn’t ‘pure’. None of the vessels were. They had thoughts and a mind. They knew what their purpose was, they wanted to save Hallownest, they loved their father. And so the Radiance (the old god) infected them too, and the Infection spread faster than ever throughout the kingdom. Hallownest fell.
The game is set a time after the fall of the Eternal Kingdom, because as it turns out, there was a way out of the Abyss into Deepnest (another area of the game where you can find vessel corpses lying around in the background of a boss arena). The player character (who the fandom likes to call either Ghost or The Knight) is one of them. They traveled out into the wastelands beyond Hallownest and lost their memories, but came back for some unknown reason.
The game has several endings, but they can really be placed into two catagories: the Knight becomes the new vessel for the infection, or the Knight just straight up murders the Radiance and kills the infection in its entirety.

Hollow knight is a beautiful game, and this song is beautiful. It's a mashup, a perfect mashup. It makes me cry hearing it, seeing the animation and thinking about how the vessels feel and what they're going through... It makes me cry.

The story of the hollow knight is just as sad as the story of the abandoned ones. The hollow knight was selected as best only to feel something. Perhaps a glimmer of regret for the lost vessels, some genuine love for its father. It would realize that if it truly had thoughts and emotions, thousands of innocent vessels were abandoned and died. It would desperately try to suppress its thoughts, up until it sealed the radiance away.
Only to awaken to find itself possessed by the radiance, a failure to its siblings, its kingdom, and its father. It found itself fighting the knight and in desperation tried to stop itself, destroying itself to make up for its failure. Imagine feeling the crippling weight of a lost kingdom on your back..

You want to know something really sad? You can’t dream nail the pure vessel, but in the code it lets you see the dialogue “don’t hope” and “don’t think”. He knew he wasn’t hollow, but the only feeling he had was wanting to be.

THK (the Hollow Knight) / the Pure Vessel is not supposed to have a personality or thoughts or pretty much anything. "Don't hope" and "don't think" imply he was not the Pure Vessel and was not in fact a completely hollow knight.

I’d like to think that we would get a DLC, where Ghost, Hornet Quirrl, and the Hollow Knight go to the outskirts of the kingdom, and find a secret civilization of rogue vessels that made a life and themselves.
I love this video and I love returning to it every now and then so here's a fun, very spoilery hollow knight thought:
Many people consider the Hollow Knight or Sealed Siblings ending to be the "best endings because it implies the Radiance will successfully be sealed in the Ghost/MC in the black egg, however if you do the godhome pantheons you will inevitably face Nosk. However, this time, Nosk looks like Hornet instead of Ghost. Because of the Hunter's Journal we know that Nosk takes on the face of whoever its prey cares about. Together this means that Ghost cares about Hornet and, just like with the Hollow Knight, caring about someone makes the vessels no longer pure and empty, Ghost now has a will that can break and would not succeed if it took THK's place.
Because of this and because of the fact nobody dies I consider the Embrace the Void ending to be the "Best" ending

Actually, it’s possible for some of them to have escaped, for example if we look at the early on infected vessel (not the final boss) it was probably an escaped hollow knight, so there could be more out there!

I love the detail here that all 5 vessels in this scene have that shows they really do have emotions. The two on the left seem to be having a conversation, the one with the ram-like horns on the far right seems to either be trying to calm themself down or maybe hyping themself up? We see the one on the center-right is shaking out of fear before the Pale King arrives and the one in the center puts their hand on their shoulder and holds their hand, a show of compassion.
