- This week I answer some of the questions I get the most about my lifestyle; living alone in the Dutch countryside, in a rural cottage. I also do al lot of planting, it's time to finally prepare for summer by making my front porch pretty with flowers, even though the weather is currently still quite bad. So many people romanticize living alone and remotely. It's good to hear someone speaking from the heart.
We chose to live in a cavehome far enough from 'civilization' to see people only when we choose.
As you said, nature can be brutal. My life is all about my home, my garden, my dogs, and my husband.
You are NOT old. We found each other in our 50s.

Hi Nikky. No noise, no people, not busy sounds like heaven to me. What do you mean you are not young anymore? You look like you are around 20? Well, I am 61 and I lived all my adult live alone, which means without humans, but with animals, but I never felt or feel lonley. I can relate to everything you said about nature and its beauty and its dangerous side. The flood 1 day after christmas here stopped right behind the house a have a flat in, every new rain made me very nervous, that were tiring weeks. Once in my garden a heavy thunderstorm cut off half of my walnut tree which thankfully fell to the other side than the hut I was covering in with my dog. Your flower arrangements look very beautifull, a drainage is important otherwise the flowers wont last long. You also can put herbs on your porch for cooking and for tea, chamomille, parsley, basil, thyme and so on, good for you and good for insects. By the way: leap year is cold year, thats an old pawn role. Of course I want to see the building of the guinnea pig enclosure, I just work on a green house. Yes, I have a question: What did you study and do you work in that field now or how do you make money? I guess-hope-pray that you dont eat/ slaughter your chickens, pigs and so on.... or do you? To me you explained your opinions and feelings about your lifestyle very comprehensible and the way you do the videos is more than good so dont worry about those things. Best wishes, WH

I love to hear that you can relate to me, that always means a lot. Sounds like you were very lucky with the walnut tree, nature can be so powerful and scary. The idea about the herbs is great, I will definitely look into it. I did a bachelor in Art, Communications and Photography and I do some work as a freelancer. And don't worry, I see all my animals as pets. You might think t-h-i-r-t-h-y years are an enormous amount of time, and of course it is, but you have to look at it in relation to your whole lifespan, and thats about 90, so 60 more years to come. And guess what: the best is yet to come. You have a deep soul, maybe an old soul, I dont know yet, since I dont know you good enough to say so. Of course it can be scary to talk about feelings and emotions, especially not knowing whom you are talking to in the internet. More important in my opinion than being public about all of your feelings is that you are true and honest to yourself about your emotions and needs and you seem to have a very good introspection and capabilities to analyse yourself. Your studies sound interesting but I cant see, what kind of job one would do with it. Journalism regarding art, photojournalism maybe for nature, working in a modern museum as a curator or be an artist yourself? I am relieved your animals will grow old under your care! I was very apalled once as a female homesteader spoke about her animals as "meat". She touched a cows head and caressed it and than said: This is were we raise meat. How disconnected from empathy and sympathy she must be? So- did your announced rain came today? Here it is raining since late afternoon, so I couldnt do any work in the garden but had a long walk with my dog in a forrest before. Only thing with living alone is that what you dont do wont be done but on the other hand no one will criticize you for being lazy.... Have a nice evening, WH

Greetings from the central coast of California. I live in a small costal village in a rural area between Los Angeles and San Francisco California. Though the town gets many tourists because we have many hiking areas and beaches to enjoy. |’m surrounded by 500 acres of open space. ❤ My village was started by Swiss and Italian dairy farmers in the mid 1800’s. They have been wonderful stewards of the land and 90% hasn’t changed. Does your family farm the land with crops. Enjoyed my first visit to your channel🌻🌻

Nikky, this is the first time that I have seen your videos. I think that you are so lucky and blessed to have a place like that to call your own. To have the horses and chicken.....well this just made me smile! I am 70 years old and have always wanted a place like that, but I live in a city in the middle of the United States. I moved from England to Netherland as my partner was Dutch I lived in Kollum I loved everything about Netherlands I would have lived my life there but my partner died I stayed 3 years with my dog I loved the peace the beautiful walks i learnt too live on my own and started enjoying peace and quiet now back in England though I love my friends but can't wait too be home with my dogs enjoying alone time
When someone ask if you’re lonely, just say I have a cat on my lap, I can’t be lonely! 💁♀️ I’m retired and I live alone with my cat in the country. I love the the clean smell of the morning, the birds filling the trees with there songs. Your hanging flowers are beautiful! And a great idea to screw them on the rail, so the cats can’t knock them off. The chickens told you how much they like the flowers too. Fran

Lovely home, beautiful flowers, fur babies and chickens...and a very beautiful and genuine soul you have. I too live alone in a small older cottage on 3 acres in a rural area in VA with my fur babies and chickens, not quite as secluded as I would like but it is home for me now. We are much the same enjoying nature, building things, gardening, making soap, candles, bread and such, never run out of projects. Alone does not mean lonely; you are never alone when you enjoy your own company and find peace with your surroundings. My 2 horses have passed for several years now to green pastures in the sky, I miss them very much and would love to get more one day. I am glad I clicked on your video today.

Old at 30! OMG. First time I hear this. My grandma's 98😂 and independent. This lifestyle is not for everyone. Most people would go crazy but I would go crazy in the city too. People have to find their place in this planet.

Hello Nikky from the UK ☺. I've just found your vlog this evening, and what a gentle, kind and sensitive channel. Your love of nature and animals is outstanding. I lost my beloved husband Terry in December 2023 after 54 years together. He was my love, my life and my soul mate. I'm 71 now on my own for the first time. Although I do have my Kits Tally 🐺 and Luna 🐱that are giving me a reason to get upon the morning. They are indoor cats with an outside cattery in the warmer weather months, I am currently finding solace in nature and my garden, which we both loved, but I miss him so much. Im so happy to find this channel becasue i live in the woods in kenya. Few people who come to fetch water but no immediate neighbors i live alone and growing my own food. Its been 3 months and i never been more happy. I wish i started earlier. Im never lonely because i love living alone. Many happy people are finding it wierd, i chose this life and i have no one to answer to. I cant imagine living with someone really. In my opinion this life off the city is the best. I feel healthier and mky body is more active due to gardening no more stress, anxiety and body issues. I sleep better than before and my skin feels younger. I wouldn't trade this life for any

Just found your channel and I live on 3 acres with chickens, bunnies cats a dog and a fish. We had a horse and there are dreams of that again some day. I grew up on a farm but my family and I moved to the city when I was 8 but we always had our family's cottage which kept us close to nature. my parents divorced when I was young and after I divorced my mom and I decided to sell out houses and buy this farm... I lost her a year and a half ago so it has been a challenge getting used to being here alone. Thankfully I have neighbours not too far away that help when I need it. I am so happy I found your channel! Hello from Canada!!!

@@shinylittlepeople I have bunnies! Not by choice, though! They breed every year in my garden near the chimney; then run all around and eat everything in sight! My flowers, vegetables but mostly the clover in the lawn!

Hi Nikky! Another great sunday video. The flowers really look nice, its amazing how much flowers can beauty to anything. I see the large planter of flowers is thriving too. You are getting alot of rain, ( this coming week, we are expecting highs of 90-100 for 5 straight days! Which is odd because up until now we have had a slow start to summer, with many chilly nights. I am lucky I have air conditoning, and in my car). I find the weather has changed alot over the decades, its much more unpredictable. I too get scared and I live in a house in the city, but when I hear the sirens going off with a tornado warning, we run to our basement, for you , you maybe can go to your moms house and that would keep you safe. Everything you described about country living is what I want so badly. With my daughter wanting to possibly go to university here in Michigan, I will stay here, but my goal is to one day live in the south where it is rural and QUIET. It is so noisy where I live. I truly believe that when your mate or soulmate comes along God will provide if it is meant to be. Perhaps you may meet someone who also is a homesteader and loves what you love. You are a natural beauty, and very young. You may run into that person at a market someday. who knows. One of the DIY projects I love the most was the egg holder you made, its a nice decorative piece for the counter as well as being a funtional item. You can tell just through the screen how this life makes you so very happy. Your animals are lucky to have you. I can't wait to see the start of the guinea pig enclosure. I sure hope the rain lets up for you this week!

I live in the USA and where we live in Washington state it rains a lot so if the sun is shining and somebody talks about sunshine, then it starts raining so I called the rain liquid sunshine, and then it goes away quicker. I catch the rain, but I love to dance in the rain so it doesn’t bother me so much.❤😂

We can't talk about the sun, it's almost like you can scare it away 😂 But I'm the same, I love the rain, I just don't like it for the animals and it's sad it ruins a lot of the farmland. I love living alone. I enjoy my dog, cat, fish, wildbirds and whatever animal comes across my life.
I live in a cape cod cottage on Cape Cod Massachusetts alone I’m 68. I raised 3 sons by myself dogs jobs busy busy busy. I’ve been downsizing for 10 years now to greT to this but I still have a she shed full of stuff . Here I srrounded by 109 year old Cypress on a knoll near the sea of course. Now after 5 years I’m feeling the need for community so I am looking to move within the year! I have an illness that has taken my mobility and strength but as long as I can I want to be with some people again. My o,boys are so busy and I don’t see them very much . I’m thinking of a tiny house community but 🤷♀️.

Small space life is simple (I lived on a boat for years), it's good for the soul. Uncluttered and straightforward. I am living in a house (after 20 years off grid life) so your channel is a GIFT. Hi Nikky, die vraag over eenzaamheid wordt mij ook keer op keer gesteld zodra mensen weten dat ik vrijgezel ben. ( wat een naamgeving he, hihihi) En net zoals jij antwoord ik steevast: nee ik voel mij absoluut niet eenzaam. Ik geniet juist van de stilte en vrijheid die het geeft. Nu helemaal nu de leeftijd parten gaat spelen , fysiek gezien. Van een heel actief mens ben ik langzaam maar zeker beland in een ouder wordend persoon met allerlei fysieke problemen. Dat was mentaal ( nog steeds eerlijk gezegd) gezien een heel gevecht en ben blij dat ik daar niemand mee heb belast in mijn directe omgeving. En geloof mij , ook in een grote groep mensen kun je jezelf alleen voelen. Ik kom uit een vrij groot gezin en voelde me daar soms eenzamer dan de momenten die ik ervaar in het alleen wonen. Het zijn momenten he die niet afwegen tegen alle vrijheid 😃Dank je wel voor je openheid en wederom een mooie video ❣💜

When you take a plant out of a pot that was at the store or wherever you bought your plant make sure you break up the root system so that it can re-grow and reformulate to the new pot that’ll help you and if you put gravel in the bottom of the pot that you put your plant in that’ll give it enough roomfor the water and you probably should put a hole in the bottom of each pot so the water can drain. You got this❤

Hi Nikky , I loved your video. Your Tiny cottage and where you live is so beautiful and peaceful. I live in the Lassen nation forest in the middle of about 5 lakes . Winter is very snowy but summers are warm but good for boating. Take care 🌲

I’m not an expert on plants but I think it helps to break up the roots at the end of each plant before putting it in a new pot, perhaps some new soil added would also be good 🌸

Im totally new.
I live in the USA and where we live in Washington state it rains a lot so if the sun is shining and somebody talks about sunshine, then it starts raining so I called the rain liquid sunshine, and then it goes away quicker. I catch the rain, but I love to dance in the rain so it doesn’t bother me so much.❤😂
I love living alone but it is difficult if you get sick and there is no one around to help .
That's very true, I'm very lucky to live this way and have family close by.
Born and raised in sunny, rainy, hot and humid Florida of the USA! Always wishing and planning for something like this!

You may want to poke some holes in the bottom of your metal plant holders on the deck railing unless they already had holes that I didn't see. Was a very interesting video thank you

I just got divorced after being married shy of 24 years. It took counseling to open my eyes fully to help me realize that the ex husband is a narcissist and I have been dealing with emotional abuse for years. He all but snuffed out my soul. Attempted to get me to turn my back on my animals and rescue. As soon as this house sells, I am moving farther rural. Just myself and my animals. I have always been one who beats to their own drum, and so looking forward to being alone and not lonely. I get it Nikki. 🌸

I too love all of the things you love, I'm older and really don't like the rain, we have a lot here in Cumbria UK. Your plants in the small planters would have been happier with some compost in the bottom of the planters before you put the plants in, somewhere for the roots to grow into and feed from. Maybe next year.
This is my first time seeing your video. I am from Austin TX. It is a large city but has much nature areas for camping and hiking. The weather is nice right now. About 90 degrees of which may seem warm for some but for us this time of year it is great weather. Looking g forward to watching more!
