I ran a lot during Second Edition, before the all the gods walking Faerun crap that no one I knew liked, not even Ed Greenwood. So, yeah, back in that time period, Bane, Bhaal, and Myrkul were definitely the biggest three evils talked about. Lolth and others were still bad, but those three were really tough. They were the go-to bad gods. I actually prefer the pantheon of that period over the current one.

I do know that I preferred the older pantheon to Kelemvor and Cyric and such. I was at GenCon when all that was going down, and I attended a seminar/gathering with Ed Greenwood, and he made it apparent he wasn’t happy with TSR (at the time) messing around with the pantheon and Realms in that way. I did like the whole death and reincarnation of Bhaal, though, and the BG games.

Jergal has no need or desire for things that other Gods have such as chosen or worshipers, nor does he have clerics or grant spells. Long ago he essentially realized what none of the other Gods have, that Godhood is more a prison than a prize. He realized that he could give up his Godhood and still retain a good portion of his powers, so he kind of figured out how to game the system, retaining most of the benefits of being a God without the responsibilities that go with it. He doesn't have to cultivate worshipers or manage a planar realm. He's essentially free to do whatever he wants whenever he wants. Though there is a theory that he is FAR more powerful than any of the other Gods as he is actually the "chosen" of the Overgod AO, which may have been who he was talking about when you first meet him and he says, "So he has spoken, and so thou standest before me, Right as always."

I like how you can embrace the dark urge or resent it in every possible way, Larian only shows how good they are in understading that sometimes we like a good redemption story that is a choice and not an only path
Just like you could in BG2 in 2000. The Dark Urge character is basically a callback to the plotlines of 1 and 2. I wouldn't be surprised if the redeemed Dark Urge is the actual "canon" character of the game.

@@meris8486 I feel like not having Durge as a companion is such a wasted opportunity. There are certain moments where Durge would make things harder for players so I understand that they wouldn't want to turn players off.
I know that by nature of the game there is no cannon set of events outside of those that are true for every run. But I do feel like that all things considered, if one route had to be cannon, this is the one. Durge is the best Tav in terms of backstory and connections to the world, and it's the one that has the best ties to the whole plot, as you become a de facto Jergal Chosen.

Keep in mind he still needs to use an avatar to guide Tav. I also think Larian did some hb/retconning, because the whole game seems to make pretty clear that they still have their portfolios and doesn't mention successors, so I guess Kelemvor and Cyric are sorta gone.

Somerhing along those lines "So he was right when he foretold your arrival" This implies 2 things: he hasnt the ability to foresee fate like a greater deity might. And second, he has a superior he is in connection with. To be a greater deity in the forgotten realms you need a super big following and/or a super wide portfolio. That's established lore. The game itself says that jergal is nearly forgotten and almost everybody turned to Kelemvor (even the mortician in the cemetery of bg is a follower of kelemvor, not jergal). Kelemvor is still very active and there is nothing in the game that would imply that withers might not just be the original (and only) avatar jergal still posseses.
First playthrough after the Early Access as the Dark Urge who resisted best decision ever. I was smiling like a toddler for the whole scene. Withers best NPC followed by the Emperor.

Can i ask a question, to try to understand the lore more.. what are Bhaal Bhaalspawn, in relation to demons like Raphael and Yimgur? Im quite sure their all evil but one is referred to as a God of murder while the others are called demons.
Bhaal is the God of Murder and Assassination, he was one of the three mortals Jergal divided his divinity among. (the other two were Myrkul and Bane. Myrkul became the God of Death and Necromancy, while Bane became the God of Tyranny and Strife.) Raphael is a powerful Devil, but he's not a god, he isn't even a lesser god.
The big difference is that Bhaalspawn are the mortal offspring of the God of Murder Bhaal, whereas Fiends are evil creatures that are native to the Lower Planes.
Actually in dnd lore Raphael and Yimgur aren't demons, but devils. Main difference between these two are that devils want power and demons want chaos. Also demons are from abyss and devils are from nine hells. But i am not sure if there are demons in hells.

I absolutely loved this scene but it realllly sucks how much less reactive your companions are. Like when you die everyone just stands around like idiots instead of responding to it. It brought the moment down for me. I really hope they add more reactivity to Act 3 and better endings because it felt so lacking. Otherwise, I still loved it and this scene was mostly great.
Just finished my first play-through of Baldur's Gate 3 with a Dark Urge character and resisted the urge all the way even though things didn't go as I wanted to. I couldn't romance Karlach, because I didn't choose the single dialog option in the beginning and after that the game bugged out and somehow I was romanced to Gale (even though I have rejected every character). :D So I was sad, my character was sad, we lost a good companion along the way too, my character was consuming the Illithid powers to be able to help as much as possible if it was already a monster it doesn't matter if it won't turn out well for it, it would be ready to sacrifice itself. Then I got here, did the rejection, died, watching the cut-scene I was like finally we redeemed ourselves and bamm comes Withers. Best moment ever! Won't forget this play-through ever I don't think.
My game made me romance Gale instead of Karlach for no reason too, I was so upset that I gave up my 50+ hour run and now I'm restarting to try again. I need fire mommy ;-;
When I first met him, I wasn't playing as the Dark Urge character, because of that I assumed he was just some Archlich or something. Up till my second playthrough where I deduced that this guy is Jergal but in like... An avatar or a god reduced to a super undead.
In the shop right next to the Baldurs Gate Waypoint, the hairdresser sells cosmetics, including a variety of dyes and clothes. I gave that dress to my hubby, Astarion, and took the skimpier one for myself.
Yes, that is reserved only for his chosen. If you didn't earn it by the time you reached Orin, Bhaal bestowed it upon her instead and she'll use it during the fight.
@@misterbleedinggums and honestly i think it makes her easier to kill XD i haven't fought her without it, but my hasted battlemaster fighter absolutely smashed her 180 hp face in with 5 superiority attacks and 4 standard attacks. lasted only half a turn the first time and two turns the second time (i crashed in the cutscene)
@MFenix206 It took me more turns to deal with her cultists that turn invisible and have sanctuary than to kill her in Slayer form. Sarevok was a profoundly more difficult fight than hers. Sarevok was absolutely demolishing my Bear Heart Karlach's HP, even through resistance. Not to mention what his allies were doing to my team. That being said, this is why I love Warlock. Stacking on hit effects makes Warlock pop-off. I almost wish that they had brought more than just the PHB subclasses into the game. If I had access to the Fathomless Warlock subclass, I'd be doing so much more per turn lmao.
@@TheSylveonSurfer Orin was pretty much cannon fodder for my hastened ranger. But I definitely agree that Sarevok's the much tougher fight. Took me 3 or 4 tries until I figured out how to beat him: kite him up onto those balconies overlooking the room with my drow ranger main (illithid flying is such a powerful ability to have) and stomp him there (far from his support) with Gale's help, while Karlach ate any damage his allies dished out and Shadowheart was reduced to casting turn undead. Additionally, had my dire raven pet flying around his allies, creating patches of darkness whenever it landed + blinding them with attacks. That left Sarevok without his support - and then he crumbles quickly.
@richardmajer7900 I did beat Sarevok on the first try, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't almost wipe me. My strat was fairly straightforward. Bear Totem Karlach tanks Sarevok. War Cleric Shadowheart splits off to manage to the guards at the door. My husband, Astarion, spammed the silencing arrows on the ladies that love casting Slow and Haste. And I Eldritch Blasted anything within range and maintained Concentration on a Globe of Invulnerability for Astarion and Karlach with the stockpile that I had built up. My strategy broke down the moment that one of the guards broke off and I failed a save on Compelled Duel, forcing me to drop Concentration and waste Spell Slots. Through a combination of spamming Invisibility on Astarion to keep him alive and barely keeping the guards from mind controlling my character, I was able to finally kill his adds and then focus fire him. Through this, Karlach tanked everything but reached the lowest she had ever been. She was on like 15HP by bypass the end.
While Bhaal killed the Dark Urge for rejecting him, Withers resurrected him. This was easy because Withers the skeleton cleric is actually an avatar of Jergal, the god who gave up his divine functions in favor of Bhaal, Myrkul and Bane, long ago. So he used what's left of his old dominion to stick it to Bhaal, who he consider an idiot unworthy of godhood.
i kind of wished the bhaal storyline had archmage imoen go mental over bhaal being alive and all the struggle of the first 2 games being invalidated by it. but we got to spit a living bhaal in the face mentally in return, ill take that deal
@@Foggers8_8she did canonically became a mage in Baldur’s Gate 2 and in her epilogue slide she is described as creating a thieves guild WHILE also being an archmage, so one does not invalidates the other.

Well it was dissapointing. As (to be redeemed) dark urge I chose a duel. I killed transformed Orin because I saved my potion "resistance to everything" and used it now. I expected some god avatar battle along with my companions but nothing. It was super easy. Last boss was also quite easy. Tactician diff ofc.
The difficulty in BG3 just isn't there. You really have to nerf your party by using heavily garbage classes(assassin, most wizard schools, wild magic sorc) or less than 4 party members to feel difficulty. I had the most fun just using less party members. Solo is really, really boring as you have to wait an eternity for the enemy to finish all their turns, but three party members on tactician is surprisingly balanced. I find myself getting that moment of bad luck that actually puts me in a tough spot and it keeps me actively engaged. I'll probably try a duo playthrough too, but I get the feeling it's like a solo playthrough where you really need the lethality for it to not be boring.
@@Evillassie might be a bit late but, for the sake of an answer you probably need to do a few long rests. just keep doing partial ones until you run out of cutscenes.

Dark Urge - Chosen of Jergal
I absolutely loved this scene but it realllly sucks how much less reactive your companions are. Like when you die everyone just stands around like idiots instead of responding to it. It brought the moment down for me. I really hope they add more reactivity to Act 3 and better endings because it felt so lacking. Otherwise, I still loved it and this scene was mostly great.
Just finished my first play-through of Baldur's Gate 3 with a Dark Urge character and resisted the urge all the way even though things didn't go as I wanted to. I couldn't romance Karlach, because I didn't choose the single dialog option in the beginning and after that the game bugged out and somehow I was romanced to Gale (even though I have rejected every character). :D So I was sad, my character was sad, we lost a good companion along the way too, my character was consuming the Illithid powers to be able to help as much as possible if it was already a monster it doesn't matter if it won't turn out well for it, it would be ready to sacrifice itself.
Then I got here, did the rejection, died, watching the cut-scene I was like finally we redeemed ourselves and bamm comes Withers. Best moment ever! Won't forget this play-through ever I don't think.
My game made me romance Gale instead of Karlach for no reason too, I was so upset that I gave up my 50+ hour run and now I'm restarting to try again. I need fire mommy ;-;
Withers let's you whale on him and it's pretty fair in price to respec. How can you not love this guy?

When I first met him, I wasn't playing as the Dark Urge character, because of that I assumed he was just some Archlich or something. Up till my second playthrough where I deduced that this guy is Jergal but in like... An avatar or a god reduced to a super undead.
He is himself as Jergal, but freed of his godhood responsabilities and still powerfull enough to do anything he wants.
Shadowheart's dress looks amazing! Is that a mod or can we buy it from somewhere?
The hairdresser is where I got it from. You run into him while tracking down the dwarf in red, in Baldur's Gate.
In the shop right next to the Baldurs Gate Waypoint, the hairdresser sells cosmetics, including a variety of dyes and clothes. I gave that dress to my hubby, Astarion, and took the skimpier one for myself.
I agree, if i had to choose a best scene, this would be it.

Yes, that is reserved only for his chosen. If you didn't earn it by the time you reached Orin, Bhaal bestowed it upon her instead and she'll use it during the fight.

i haven't fought her without it, but my hasted battlemaster fighter absolutely smashed her 180 hp face in with 5 superiority attacks and 4 standard attacks. lasted only half a turn the first time and two turns the second time (i crashed in the cutscene)
@MFenix206 It took me more turns to deal with her cultists that turn invisible and have sanctuary than to kill her in Slayer form. Sarevok was a profoundly more difficult fight than hers. Sarevok was absolutely demolishing my Bear Heart Karlach's HP, even through resistance. Not to mention what his allies were doing to my team.
That being said, this is why I love Warlock. Stacking on hit effects makes Warlock pop-off. I almost wish that they had brought more than just the PHB subclasses into the game. If I had access to the Fathomless Warlock subclass, I'd be doing so much more per turn lmao.
@@TheSylveonSurfer Orin was pretty much cannon fodder for my hastened ranger. But I definitely agree that Sarevok's the much tougher fight. Took me 3 or 4 tries until I figured out how to beat him: kite him up onto those balconies overlooking the room with my drow ranger main (illithid flying is such a powerful ability to have) and stomp him there (far from his support) with Gale's help, while Karlach ate any damage his allies dished out and Shadowheart was reduced to casting turn undead. Additionally, had my dire raven pet flying around his allies, creating patches of darkness whenever it landed + blinding them with attacks. That left Sarevok without his support - and then he crumbles quickly.
@richardmajer7900 I did beat Sarevok on the first try, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't almost wipe me. My strat was fairly straightforward. Bear Totem Karlach tanks Sarevok. War Cleric Shadowheart splits off to manage to the guards at the door. My husband, Astarion, spammed the silencing arrows on the ladies that love casting Slow and Haste. And I Eldritch Blasted anything within range and maintained Concentration on a Globe of Invulnerability for Astarion and Karlach with the stockpile that I had built up.
My strategy broke down the moment that one of the guards broke off and I failed a save on Compelled Duel, forcing me to drop Concentration and waste Spell Slots.
Through a combination of spamming Invisibility on Astarion to keep him alive and barely keeping the guards from mind controlling my character, I was able to finally kill his adds and then focus fire him. Through this, Karlach tanked everything but reached the lowest she had ever been. She was on like 15HP by bypass the end.
So he admires what you did.
Honestly the game has a lot of good soundtracks, but for some reason this scene didn't have one

While Bhaal killed the Dark Urge for rejecting him, Withers resurrected him. This was easy because Withers the skeleton cleric is actually an avatar of Jergal, the god who gave up his divine functions in favor of Bhaal, Myrkul and Bane, long ago. So he used what's left of his old dominion to stick it to Bhaal, who he consider an idiot unworthy of godhood.

Well it was dissapointing. As (to be redeemed) dark urge I chose a duel. I killed transformed Orin because I saved my potion "resistance to everything" and used it now. I expected some god avatar battle along with my companions but nothing. It was super easy. Last boss was also quite easy. Tactician diff ofc.
The difficulty in BG3 just isn't there. You really have to nerf your party by using heavily garbage classes(assassin, most wizard schools, wild magic sorc) or less than 4 party members to feel difficulty. I had the most fun just using less party members. Solo is really, really boring as you have to wait an eternity for the enemy to finish all their turns, but three party members on tactician is surprisingly balanced. I find myself getting that moment of bad luck that actually puts me in a tough spot and it keeps me actively engaged. I'll probably try a duo playthrough too, but I get the feeling it's like a solo playthrough where you really need the lethality for it to not be boring.
