One of the first to stand out with this kind of bold frankness would be Ice T and his album Power (1988) and the track "I'm Your Pusher." The production was on point and his flow was crisp! It gets overlooked as he was on the crest of the next wave - released same the year as this iconic album.

There had been a lot of hip hop that was real but not this raw. It can be argued of how real this is (conversation for another day).

Hearing your reaction about an honest depiction of life in Compton, you really gotta listen to good kid m.a.a.d. city by Kendrick. That’s one you’re gonna want to listen to all the way through.

Before this most of the acts in Hip Hop were heavily New York based. This was also during an era where Rap/Hip Hop wasnt being recognized/respected as an art form or musical genre. NWA decided to be completely transparent about what happens in their area and the experiences growing up in LA in the 80s. This was late 80s, therefore this is right around the time of crack epidemic, Freeway Ricky Ross, Reagan, North, and Contras... if you listen to Rakim and KRS-One you will find a completely different feel, still as real, but not as raw and explicit

1 watch = 1 new sub bro! I grew up in Hip Hop culture. 51 yrs old. The previous mention of 93 Til Infinity by Souls is legit AF. So many more though. Erik B and Rakim use so much old school jazz and R&B...check out "Don't Sweat the Technique"...Pete Rock and CL Smooth "They Reminisce Over You"...shit Guru (Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal) has a whole Jazz based series Yo! "Jazzmatazz" ...I could feed you and your channel for a year or two bruh...Hip Hop and Jazz IMHO is ONE!

Grew up on NY hip hop, but when NWA (and Ice-T) dropped, in the West we felt like yo, this is us, this is our lives.

@@knowthyselfinstitute I'm NY born and live here now, but I was raised most my life in the Bay. So, I can't answer that for you.

You need to absorb the first 3 Public Enemy albums, and as a jazz guy, Paul's Boutique.
Also, Digable Planets, and obviously Jazzmatazz Volume 1.

ice t and the west coast gangsta attitude was new, no one in rap was using a lot of profanity like that before. ice cube and mc ren wrote a lot of the lyrics for eazy e and dr dre

PLEASE React to Express yourself by NWA and you will hear a less aggressive more expressive side of the group. I really think you will love it. If strait out of Compton is Yin express yourself in its yang.

Ice T set the bar but Ice T added more context and cautionary tales. NWA went for shock value raw and uncut. Please review Ice T Colors and Ice T Power and you will find the source of ALL west coast Gangster rap. Love your videos and your feeling and the way you mimick the beat wiht your piano. love it man.

Greetings from New England...I remember when NWA came out...Back in the day when this was released I remembered that the FBI sent them a long letter admonishing them for such violent and profane language..lol..Easy even read it in a bunch of interviews..S.O.O.C. was a true game changer..Peace from the Northeast..

I know you're chronologically past this now, but Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J, DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince, and MC Lyte are the musical late 80s rap contemporaries (ish). Rap was very heavily East Coast. NWA was the West Coast trying to get on that level.

IMO, this is as real as it gets. There wasn't a precedent. Just a group of guys speaking their truth. Before this, I listened to stuff like Run DMC. You can't really draw a correlation. Great reaction!
