Also, I think in that first verse he gives a nod to Slick Rick. The kid running through the neighborhood shooting, going into abandoned buildings just like in Children’s Story, only slightly different now. In Slick Rick’s version it was the lost child who got caught up. In Nas’s it’s now commonplace.

NY Hip Hop was always about the DJ - the MC took a backseat. Eric B gave us Rakim who birthed lyricism, Marley Marl gave us Kool G. Rap who birthed lyricism with an aggressive tone. Nas, as a 17 year old, was a combination of both with the top producers collaborating on the greatest rap album still to this day. If it wasn't for Dr. Dre's soundboard, LA rap would have never taken off and there would have been no interruption of NY staying the king of hip hop.
This along with To Pimp a Butterfly fused the lyrical technique and jazz elements I personally love. Artists like Robert Glasper experiment with these sounds of jazz and hip hop, I'm a huge fan of it!
You should definitely give a chance to Nas’s “I Gave You Power.” While the music is incredible, the lyrics on “I Gave You Power” are going to give you goosebumps with the story he weaves.
All I can say is this album simply reflected the hood life many of us experienced. It was so familiar and resonated so much, yet Nas was able to express and articulate what we lived on a daily basis better than perhaps anyone ever had before. And, he obviously did it so well that it resonates today with people who never experienced that life. By the way, if you want to hear more from QB (Queensbridge Projects) that captures that same vibe, albeit much darker and aggressive, you gotta dig into Mobb Deep's The Infamous album.
The crazy thing was, yes he was 21 when rapping this, but this song took YEARS of writing, so some of these lyrics definitely came from when he was even younger. Truly mindblowing.

East Coast hip-hop was very lively at the time. West Coast hip-hop had more commercial success at the time. The introduction of gangsta rap spelled the demise of conscious hip-hop music. Nasir Jones helped to bring NY hip hop back under the microscope, but there were several others who were present such as Wu Tang, Mobb Deep, Black Moon, Redman, Biggie and others. Nas was just so polished and y alike anything ever heard. He truly raised the bar for all emcees bar none.
Nas is the storyteller, but DJ Premier paints the landscape for these artists to go off of. Premo, if he isn't the best producer ever, is the most legendary one and his sample flips are out of this world. People who are into jazz tend to lean towards sample heavy hip hop because it takes most of it's inspiriation from jazz since jazz music usually has the best samples. The hard basslines and strings, the infusion of piano/keys, the light tappy, sometimes swingy, hats and snare. It's the perfect music to take and make into a hip hop beat.
While this is Nas, the production/sound is him along with some hip hop royalty, the best who’ve ever done it then and now: DJ Premier, Large Professor, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, and L.E.S.
If you really want more New York hip hop then you GOTTA listen to mobb deep they are a huge player in that scene specifically shook one’s and survival of the fittest

When you get around to modern hip hop, you need to check out Aesop Rock. He's known for having the single largest number of unique words across all of his tracks than any other rapper. Beyond that, his ability to rhyme, and to bury obscure references in those rhymes is honestly unparalleled. Of course. He has tracks that are easily understood too. I'd suggest No Regrets as an easy track to understand. That or 9-5ers Anthem. He's also got absolutely incredible production.
