I just wanted to thank you guys for this video again, since my last post I have been doing various neck exercises and my neck feels much much better, thank you guys for the informative vids, more success to you all. Best wishes.
Thank you for your presentation! I have done couple of these in PT, though a simpler / rudimentary variation, and these look like good progressions as I advance
This is my exact problem. I've been avoiding working my upper traps, and stretching my neck. But it seemed like things were getting worse. So then I realized that the traps were already over-lengthened likely due to weakness, that's why they felt tight, and why stretching wasn't working. So I've been doing shrugs this week, hoping that might finally be the right approach. And then I see this video, and I feel super optimistic that I finally know how to attack this issue effectively going forward. Thank you.
Thank you and the rest of [P]Rehab so much for all these videos. I found this channel because of achillies pain but videos like this are helping me address longer standing issues I've let go untreated. I'm at the point in my life, as we all go through, where my body is signaling that the insurance policy is running out so stuff like this addressing the root causes has been a godsend. I've been using the guide on Achillies tendonitis every day and have been feeling a lot better. Still finding that sweet spot of loading up but I'm already feeling better than I was last week. Can't wait to be back at full strength.
We love getting messages like this! Thank you for the incredibly kind words! We are so glad that you are finding the tools to take your health and put it in your hands! Glad to hear that achilles is feeling better, not sure if you are aware but we have an achilles specific program if interested in more guidance to getting back to your life the way you want! This [P]rehab fam is proud of you! theprehabguys.com/program-achilles-prehab/
i have impingement 14th month and started use only overhead shrug + inchworm + overhead lunges to support upward rotation + stability and avoid all other shrugs, avoid lunges with weights on side, minimize deadlift.
Wow! This video made me have a big aha-moment. I have had different issues in my upper body and this place is one of them. I had problems with that area for a long time and quite severe at some point because of the bodyweight stuff I was doing. I never thought about these playing a big role since they always felt so stiff, so I never trained them.. Thanks for uploading this, I am excited to try them and see what happens!
Huge thanks for all your explained neck exercises for rehab. Making a routine for me after I pulled my lower neck muscles while doing shoulder wall walks, through probably came down to a few factors like poor head position or my shrugged shoulder position at top of pull ups. I always come back to neck injuries, maybe I'll actually stick to doing neck strengthening exercises in the long term.
And how does this improve an already weak and tight (thus susceptible to injury) muscle? What if the movement is causing pain later after finishing it? What if any movement involving the levator scapula leads to pain / headache? Assuming one does not have any hernias actually pressing on anything (inactive ones) or severe arthritis etc.
Thank you, your exercises are very good. But I just wonder if I can do the push up focusing on squeezing the scapular muscles. Do you think that it's good or there may be some flaws to it?
Could you PLEASE do a video on how to lift weights with thoracic outlet syndrome? So many people with this condition quit going to the gym because of TOS, but I'm sure there has to be some adjustments you can make to lift safely right?
I weightlift but intentionaly disregarded trap training, because they grow very big very fast, so I don't train them to not ''distort'' the width I have on my shoulders. But I had some time ago tried to do shrugs on a standing calve machine, which I saw from someone else, and it seemed to aleviate the pain in the neck. Could it be that my neck is weak, this is what I understand from this video. Very thought provoking and educational, thank you.👍
Hey Kenan! Yes that could definitely be the case! As mentioned in the video, we sometimes shy away from strengthening muscles as we feel it's going to lead to more tightness and discomfort when it's actually quite the opposite! It's important to strengthen our muscles through their full length! The upper trap plays a large role in our neck stability, so we need to give it the strength and attention it deserves!
Ok, update for any viewer watching this, today was 'back day' and like I said I did train traps. I did one rep on standing calve raise machine 138kg 25 reps, just used traps to lift and I feel almost no pain on my traps after the session. I have a hernia at C6, so I still have some discomfort still along the neck, but the previously existing trap 'tightness', 'pain/discomfort' is relieved. I think I will start doing rotational neck workouts too. For example laying on one side on shoulder, and while looking down with the neck bent down towards to floor, starting to raise my face towards the ceiling and pointing my head towards up. I had used to do that before and had helped. Anyways this is not a health advice, just sharing my own experience. Consult your doctor for your own situation.
Can the neck refer pain/headache to upper traps or it’s it more the other way around? Weak shoulder stability causing the problems or irritated nerves in the neck referring to shoulder?
You can absolutely get referred discomfort from the neck into the shoulders and discomfort and muscle imbalances in the shoulders can lead to discomfort in the neck! We have some great videos on headaches on our channel, check em out!
@@ThePrehabGuys thanks man. My question relates specifically to the traps. When I squeeze the traps along the ridge of shoulder it will refer the headache exactly. If this is the case this seems like it’s coming from the trap?
That's why we wanted to show you a few variations of how this could be done! Don't have dumbbells? Use a band! Don't have that? Fill a backpack with books for a little weight! It's all about being creative in the space you have! Hoping you give these a try!

hi thank you for this informative video 🔥. Could you also do a video against the hollow back?
it would be very nice 🤩
Hey Alex, so glad you enjoyed the video! And thank you for the suggestion! We appreciate it and will see what we can do for you!

Hey yes there are several things that can be done when dealing with TOS! We have a good video on TOS if you haven't checked it out already!
As soon as I tried the first shrug, I already felt the pain going away...
So glad to hear it!

Is the shrug good for neck stenosis
It can definitely serve a role as long as it feels comfortable!
Hi i Don't know why i feel as electric shock in one side of my traps muscle when i squeeze
Will any of these movements cause/lead to shoulder impingement?
Generally speaking no they shouldn't!
Great video. Do you have any thing for sciatica pain and stiffness from the buttocks to the calf
