Fix Rhomboid Pain

  • Are you dealing with a nagging discomfort in between your shoulder blade and your spine? No matter how many stretches you do, or how much time you spend foam rolling it, does it still persist? Pain in this area often gets labeled as a rhomboid issue because it is a relatively superficial muscle that you can appreciate from any anatomy chart. However, how to fix rhomboid pain sometimes may actually have little to do with the rhomboids. In this video, you'll learn the ultimate secret of how to fix rhomboid pain by taking a look at a very specific movement...thoracic rotation!
Rhomboid pain is labeled as pain in between your shoulder blade and your spine (interscapular pain) that can even refer up to the base of your neck or down the middle of your back. It is often described as a nagging dull ache or pain, pressure, knifelike, pulling, or even a burning sensation (is that really rhomboid pain? Food for thought). You'll often find people dealing with discomfort in this area wanting to fidget around in efforts to feel better - moving their head and neck around trying to stretch, rounding their shoulders, squeezing their shoulder blades back, or twisting their upper back, you name it. The occasional soreness in this region is nothing to be concerned about, especially if you did a hard upper back workout or carried a backpack for a long time. However, dealing with constant discomfort or pressure in this area can become a real nuisance.
Just because you're dealing with discomfort in between your shoulder blade and your spine doesn't mean we have to point the finger at the rhomboids every time! To fix rhomboid pain, we need to take a look at and consider all of the other anatomical structures in the area.
If there was only one movement assessment I had to pick when it comes to evaluating interscapular pain, I'm going to look at thoracic rotation mobility. Poor thoracic rotation mobility can wreak havoc on the body and can definitely refer pain and discomfort to the rhomboid region. Poor thoracic rotation mobility is often coupled with poor scapular mobility/stability, which only contributes to the issue more! I have found that simply improving thoracic rotation mobility can improve interscapular discomfort. Be sure to watch the full video to learn not just how to assess, but also how to improve thoracic rotation mobility and potentially fix rhomboid pain!

I've been struggling with pain between the shoulder blades for going on 10+ years. PT, chiropractor, massage, etc all were just temporary relief (if at all). Exercise makes the pain terrible and impacted my quality of life (sleep, mood, activity). I started doing these 3 exercises this week and I immediately felt soooo loose and pain free. I thought I needed to give up weight lifting (something I love) but I've had two intense workouts with absolutely no pain afterwards! I can't describe out much this means to me and how much it has helped. thank you so much Prehab!

I can’t believe this. I’ve been dealing with severe rhomboid pain for more than a decade due to an old sports injury. Occasionally wake up and can’t even get out of bed without doing a barrel roll because it suddenly decided to act up and make my life a living hell for the next 3 days. It was getting in the way of my job, my sports, my sleep. Everything. I just followed along with this video and it was instant relief. I’m still in shock. Thank you so much.

I used to commute to work daily and as I drove in for years I started developing a slight pain in my left rhomboid. It would annoy me when I drove but only slightly. I then started working from home during corona and was hunched over working from my couch. The rhomboid pain started hurting more and more till it was a constant stabbing feeling that was 7/10 on the pain scale. It hurt so much, came on really quickly and was happening daily. Everyone was telling me go to a chiropractor, or wear this contraption to sleep. I didn’t want to do either. I kept trying to find a fix through RUclips. Some videos said use a foam roller to massage the area so I started using one. I also bought a massage stick and started getting massages at those ghetto places in the mall. None of this really worked. I then started looking up stretches and exercises and doing them. Nothing worked until I stumbled onto your video. Now I continue to do these exercises 2-5 times a week. If the pain comes back it’s a 1/10 instead of 7/10. Thank you for this video!

This is the first time that I see an exercise being discussed for this type of pain. For the past 30 years there has been some relief of this pain for me when I have a medium to hard pressure point Shiatsu massage done by very experienced therapists. Over the last 12+ years after an invasive surgery requiring cutting up my sternum, this pain was even more prevalent and nagging. The Shiatsus relieve it significantly, however, it reappears. As I have tendonosis on my right shoulder rotating ball as well as my right bicep, this pain is even more nagging. I look forward to these exercises in order to address that nagging pain especially behind my right shoulder blade. Thank you

Hi guys, I’m over 60 and believe it or not hadn’t even heard of Rhomboid pain until I came across your video this morning. Based on your assessment and description of the pain, I believe this has been my problem for over 25 yrs! The dull nagging pain on the left side can last for weeks…goes away for days sometimes more then comes back. Sometimes the pain goes up the back of my neck and I get real bad tension headaches! I’ve tried different pillows, mattresses, massage…pain always comes back!
I exercise regularly and did your suggested movements/exercises for the first time a few minutes ago. I will continue over the coming days and weeks…let’s see what happens! If these exercises actually do help me…I’ll be your fan for life!! 😀😎

I’ve been dealing with this pain for 8 months now and stretching has never helped only made it worse but what has given some “relief” is strengthening exercises, ice, KT tape , and bio freeze. The rhomboid is such a tough muscle to treat! It’s the worst muscle to mess up. I hope and pray somebody gets honestly well there are people in the comments that said they have been living with that pain for years. I hope this can help someone. I promised myself that if I ever going the cure I would help somebody
