Born and grew up in Schiedam. on Friday when the former Bols distillery had its cleaning, there was a lot of alcohol in the sewers. Sometimes red because of the berry Jenever.
Beautiful weather to walk around in Schiedam. Very good video, one of the places in Schiedam that I like and that it's not in the video is the Korenbeurs from the 18th century, now the municipal library, very nice place to have a rest when you do a walk from Rotterdam to Vlaardingen.
Born, raised and still living in Schiedam, In 2025 it will be 750 years since Aleida van Henegouwen gave Schiedam city rights on March 18, 1275. That is a wonderful reason to create something very beautiful and will be celebrated as such
3:26 As a Dutch person I'm so proud of you guys right now! Even packed it in the original bag! XD Something that always surprises me about Schiedam is how different it looks to Rotterdam, whilst being in the same "ring" (highway)
Ketel One vodka is ONLY produced here in Schiedam (the only place in the world), then imported into the U.S. You can book a tour there and see with your own eyes the old stokerij :-)
So much fun to see you guys in my hometown. Really close to where I live as well. Probably less then a 3 minute walk from the Yokohama Ramen. Glad you guys had a good day here.
Schiedam was a destination for me for 7 years as I went to secondary school there. Cool to see that some things are still the same (and others are unrecognisably changed. And, in keeping with the theme: the older the person the younger the jenever
Schiedam’s castle ruins is what is left of one of the towers. The castle was torn down by Schiedammers during the 80 Years War to prevent the Spanish from occupying it. The buildings that wrap around it are the Gemeente offices and the theatre, which are both in the footprint of the original castle. This is so that the governing and cultural heart of Schiedam remain where it was founded.

I think Ketel 1 wodka is made in Schiedam, but 90% of it is sold in the US. When I came across it in a small liquor store in the middle of nowhere in West Virginia in 1998, I was very surprised, because back then I didn't even know Ketel 1 was sold outside The Netherlands.
4:09 Oh man. Just a couple of matching windbreakers from the ANWB shop and you'll be the quintessential Dutch couple. I think your inburgering is complete.👍
Impressive that the first Jenever you show is actually the one I was most impressed by recently. They must have done something right I guess. Still looking for that one for myself, it's not easy to come by and isn't cheap either.
Should go to Vlaardingen one time, it’s next to Schiedam and it is probably one of the first places where people lived in the Netherlands with the oldest skeleton DNA ever found in the Netherlands (approx. 3300 years old) found right here and water dams found from 175 before christ which are the oldest dams found in Western Europe. Its also found that it was a very densely lived place in the Iron Age which was very special and unique for that time but until today it’s not known when Vlaardingen got its city rights, although it is known that grave Floris V in 1273 gave the city rights to what’s thought to be an extension of the already existing city rights. There also is a great history of fishing in Vlaardingen which was the one of the main herring fishing citys of the Netherlands and that’s still visible in the city and that’s where Vlaardingen is still known for. Since of the eighty year war in 1574 there is a rivalry in between Schiedam and Vlaardingen as gatekeepers from Schiedam burned Vlaardingen down due to Willem van Oranje giving the order to make Vlaardingen a unusable city because of its tactical position, and fleeing people from Vlaardingen were blocked by gatekeepers to go in to Schiedam. This resulted in fights in between young Schiedam and Vlaardingen residents still happening until a few years ago (from what I know of). For me as a kid I’ve also been taught never to go to Schiedam due to that rivalry and those fights.
I'm sure you'll find this interesting: Gin is derived from the Dutch word Jenever (with a J). Theres barley wine and sugar added to Jenever, Gin is made with neutral alcohol and Jenever is made with grain alcohol
Love you two doing these kinda video's. Visiting towns and places, together with a nice review of the food you taste/eat. Did you make video's in Japan, like you make video's here in the Netherlands?
Have you already tried the four main ways to serve herring? Hollandse Nieuwe (fatty, with onions), Zure Haring (from a jar, pickled in vinegar), Gerookte Haring (fatty, tastes like smoked maquerel), Rolmops (zure haring with onions and pickle inside). Most Albert Heijn stores carry all these varieties.
@@buncharted Yeah, 'zure haring' is essentially the same as 'rolmops'. The latter is a handy way to eat zure haring when you enjoy pickles with it. Gerookte haring is very different from zure haring and hollandse nieuwe. Good on toast or on bread!
@@buncharted That reminds me that the Norwegians/Swedes have a fifth way of preparing herring: canning it and letting it ferment in the can (Sürstromming). Sometimes these cans explode due to the gas buildup. I never had this variant.
@@towahbeen2347 Wat is dat? Panharing ben ik nog nooit tegengekomen! Even opzoeken op Wikipedia.... "Panharing, ook wel bakharing genoemd, is een niet gekaakte of gepekelde haring. Het is een verse, zogenoemde groene haring en dient daarom snel klaargemaakt en gegeten te worden. Deze haring wordt gefileerd en met vel bereid. In het zuur ingelegde panharing wordt 'braadharing' genoemd." Nou, dan ben je geboren en getogen Nederlander en dan wist ik geeneens wat een panharing of een braadharing is. Weer wat te ontdekken!
Fun fact: Schiedam has the most windmills in its city center in all of the Netherlands. 10 windmills. There are cities of course in Netherlands which also has have some mills in the region but those are mostly in the Holland region. Or they are outside the city limits. Some of them have one or more in the city center like Amsterdam with Molen de Otter & Molen de Gooier. Or Leiden with Molen de Valk & Molen de Put. 2 of the most famous Windmill places in Netherlands are Zaanse Schans in Zaandam with i think 7 mills and a open air museum. And of course Kinderdijk (30 minutes from Rotterdam/ 15 minutes from Dordrecht) which has over 19 mills and is the most famous UNESCO world heritage site in Netherlands.

I love a windmill as much as the next guy! I'd probably need to get that chocolate to get in the mood though haha.
You should try a krentenbol with cheese and some "sambal manis" spread on top of the cheese, a very tasty, savoury combination. Sambal is a chili paste, originally from Indonesia with which The Netherlands share a long history. The original sambal, (there are a lot of variety's) is spicy but not too spicy. You can use it with indonesian and Asian dishes and also on toast and cheese or sausage. Bread with butter and thick slices of "leverworst" with sambal is heaven.
nono.. Krentenbol with cheese is like suger on your french fries. Verry good Alex, do not share your chocolat with advocat. Jenever is what my opa drinks so , don't drink it Michelle, your to young. Yeah yeah you too Alex. Yokohama ramen Saito looked verry good. Fun Vid. Thanks🌷🌷🌷
Ah, this is really The Netherlands outside of the usual touristy areas of Amsterdam. Schiedam might have some touristy things, but they are way more interesting and genuine than the slop most tourists experience in Amsterdam.
Carrots are way more Dutch than tomatoes! The only reason carrots are orange all over the world is because the Dutch designed it that way. Carrots used to be a variety of colors, but the Dutch wanted to sell only the orange ones for marketing purposes and clearly that strategy worked!
1:49 "it's supposed to be one of the tallest towers in The Netherlands". Well, it's not 😀. I looked up the 50 highest buildings, not one church tower in it (not even close). I looked up the 50 highest Church towers Sint-Jans Church in Schiedam is not in it. 7:34 "it does have a little bit of a boozy flavor" That's because Advocaat is an traditional Dutch alcoholic drink. De binnenstad van Schiedam is de laatste 25-30 jaar, zoals bijna alle Nederlandse steden, sterk verbeterd.
Dordrecht had 35 windmills at one point in time. Only Kyck over de dyck on the Noordendijk is the last traditional windmill.
I was able to enter the Huis te Riviere around 25 years ago, it wasnt locked back then. Loved to explore it when I was a kid
Thank you so much for showing Schiedam to its fullest extend ❤
