It's interesting that you refer to the cakes as "dessert" selection. In the Netherlands, people eat those cakes with coffee (morning, afternoon, or evening), not for dessert. Maybe that's why you were a little surprised?

That is the first thing I noticed as well. Cakes we eat with afternoon tea, evening coffee or celebrations, not as a desert.

HEMA stands for "Hollandse Eenheidsprijzen Maatschappij Amsterdam" (Dutch Unitary Pricing Company Amsterdam). It apparently was the first retailer that had the same price for their products all over the country. It is famous for its Rookworst (smoked sausage). HEMA is also popular in France.

not quite. HEMA was founded as a stunt shop based on the American example of the woolworths stores that had a 5ct and 10ct store. in the Hema everything used to be for sale for 25ct and 50ct. later this was expanded with 75ct and 1 guilder.

You figured it out...this is how I eat my Tompouce...but I use a knife or fork to split top and bottom and have equal Bakkersroom on both sides. The filling has a story of it's own...traditional Bakkersroom is made with corn starch (Maizena) and you really have to cook it, most places use ready made powder and add milk/water to it. And I cannot keep from posting a comment on the Stampot...Raw Andijvie with spekjes and a Gravy from Meatballs, and the meatball ofcourse, is just classic. As is the Hutspot (carrot/onion) with Meatballs or Klapstuk, Spinache (so fluffy and delicious) with again the Meatball and a boiled egg, and Hete Bliksem (with dutch Apples) with slow cooked beef (draadjesvlees). I love to have Rookworst with my stampot...but missing out on the gravy is why I go with the Dutch Meatball or slow cooked beef.

For me, the thing with HEMA is that it's quick and cheap. That's it. Except for the rookworst. I don't care if your butcher's version takes you to artisanal heaven, HEMA rookworst is *it*. Oh, and my favorite vegetable to put in stamppot is "andijvie". That and "spekkies" (small, crunchy pieces of pork belly) is amazing.

I just keep wondering why vegans and vegetarians want their food to look like meat... I eat meat at times, I eat vegan at times, but at those times the veggies look like veggies, not like bratwurst, rookworst, kipstuckjes or a burger... They look (and taste) like the veggies they are. Also, what's with this logo 'vegan' on my beer can? Does veganism deteriorate your ability to read ingredients?

Indeed the kale variant of stamppot "boerenkool" is out of season this is a real winter dish, while you can make stamppot with lots of vegetables and spinach is certainly possible, its not real common to do so the Netherlands in the combination with the "Hema rookworst" the more obvious choice would have been the the stamppot with carrots/union "hutspot" or sauerkraut"zuurkool". you should also try the stamppot with raw andijvie in combination with meatballs and gravy or the one with leeks "prei" in combination with salmon they all are real comfort foods.

Having pre-baked pancakes is a none thing, also they are not eaten for breakfast. You get a freshly baked pannekoek for lunch or dinner. For a good dutch pancake go to a pancake house and order a sweet or savory topping of your choice, it will the best pancake you've ever tasted in your life. I also recommend poffertjes.

And you should make it with small diced'n'dryfried pork belly (spek), like bacon bits through the stampot.
2nd strike: You should not eat hotdog at the hema, I'm sure it taste good.
But instead you should have tried the hema half a rookworst on a bun with mostard.
This is een absolute must and a tradition!
3rd and final strike(your out), and this is a big one!!!
A appeltaart punt should always, and I do mean always without arguement, be consumed with
    SWEET WHIPPED CREME !
You can get arrested, eating it without!
Dutchies will give you the stare of death if you don't!
Just a warning, people get life in prison or a death sentence for less.
Don't just take it from me.
I dare you to try doin' it in public.😠
You'll go home with a plate of SWEET WHIPPED CREAM in your face!
That's how you'll be publicly shamed and at the same time marked for arrest!
Other than that, great video as always 🙂

And HEMA is famous for the rookworst and tompoes/tompouce... About 20 or 25 years ago there were plans to stop selling the rookworst at HEMA... Well, about the whole country disagreed that and HEMA did not know how to reverse that decision as soon as possible! So, the rookworst stayed!

    Another stampot recipe:
1 Kilo of Stampot Aardappelen, about 1,70
400 grams of raw andijvie, about 1,80
sachet of Verstegen Anijdvie Stampotmix spices, 1,48
335 gram Gelderse Rookworst, Albert Heijn housebrand is good
300 grams of Gerookte Spekjes, trays or bags will do. Trays are more expensive
    Dash of vinegar
    -----------------------------------------
Cook potatoes for 20 minutes along with the inner packaged rookworst, use the last 10 mins to bake the bacon. Drain potatoes after cooking time, add spice mix, add the raw andijvie and let it welter for some minutes. Add vinegar and bacon and serve with rookworst with a lick of good mustard (i prefer Dyon of Grove, wholeseed) cut in half. It will cut the fat a bit.
(rest of the stampot mixture you can store cold, put it cold of lightly microwaved on a boterham next day for lunch for instance)
A good cheap hearty meal, especially in winter!
    Enjoy!

That corner at the Hema takes me back to when I used to come there. You never experienced the V&D that used to be at the other corner. It used to be a department store where I shopped from a young age, starting in Utrecht and later in Rotterdam. Times have changed. I hope Hema will stay around because it wasn’t looking good a couple years ago.
American filet goes very well with boiled eggs!

I lived above a Hema for over ten years so I used it as my grocery store a lot. When it comes to bread and meats and chease to put on it, better and certainly better value for money than the AH. Quite good a typical Dutch microwave meals too, erwtensoep, nasi goreng. The rookworst is the best industrial one, because it's actually smoked instead of using smoke aroma. Great at

how do you eat the tompouce: tilt the tompouce on the side. you can then easily cut through the bottom and top and eat the tompouce with a knife and fork

IMO Michelle DOES eat her tompoes the best way, which really should be done with a fork because using hands to eat things is considered impolite. I've also noticed a preference to eat the bottom part first and then alternate between top and bottom, bottom and top.
I learnt Dutch back when it was obligatory for immigrants to do so, and we followed a course using the 'Nieuwe Buren' textbook/audio/computer exercises that featured an Amsterdam mom & pop shop called 'Winkel van Sinkel'. The wife of the shop later worked p.t. at what I believe was some consulting bureau. My favourite episode was when she interviewed job candidates while serving them coffee and tompoes. This episode reminded me of some kind of American slapstick - like watching 'I Love Lucy' - as the interviewees struggled with varying ways of tackling this pastry while trying to make a good impression on mw Sinkel.

Hey guys I really like you but I would like to pass a thought by you 2: If your motivation for going vegetarian /vegan is being healthier (Yes I know there are great OTHER reasons for doing that) .. I think eating products that contain anything but meat but replacing meat in a famous meat-containing foodproduct (oops this sentence turned out way to complicated) but I mean "Fake-" Hotdog, "Fake rookworst" etc... All those products are so intensely processed to give a similar sensation as meat... I wonder how healthy that is???

    • @buncharted
      @buncharted  Год назад +2

oh i’m sure it’s not healthy!
to us, fake meat is a treat when we’re eating vegetarian, not something that should be eaten regularly. but the same is true of their equivalents on the meat side - hot dogs are probably just as unhealthy as “not dogs” and are best as an occasional treat 😄

You'll have to go to the shop Little Italy in Rotterdam, Lombardkade 51-a. It's a small shop with imported Italian food. Of course they have pizza's but they are made and baked for you. They have also have sandwiches. But that is only a small part of the shop. They have a variety of meat, cheese, wine, olives, antipasta's, minisoda's for cocktails. Just ask about what they have and they love to explain the hams, cheeses or what ever. They even help you when you want to make Tiramisu!
