Why Was Rex NEVER Promoted To Commander? 😱

- Why was Rex a Captain and not a Commander?
Cuz he has more than enough experience and great leadership skills to be a Commander!
But there was one thing that stood in his way from ranking up.
And that thing is actually Ahsoka Tano!
Yeah!
See, the official hierarchy for the 501st legion was Anakin Skywalker as the general, Ahsoka Tano as commander and right under her is Rex as captain!
And since Ahsoka filled in the spot for commander, Rex couldn’t take that next step!
Until Ahsoka left that spot open!
Cuz in the 7th season of the Clone Wars show, Ahsoka isn’t considered a Jedi which means she couldn’t be part of the Republic military anymore.
And since she wasn’t considered as a leader, Rex finally got promoted and received the rank of Commander until he was demoted and charged for treason for helping Ahsoka escape Order 66!

To be fair there’s three ghost masters by the time Anakin returns to the light, and two of them were on the Council (the third being too cool for that, and also too cool to show up to the Ewok after party in ROTJ). They’d probably grant him the rank of master, if nothing else just so they don’t have to listen to him whine for all eternity about it.

There were also other commanders in the 501st commander Appo coms to mind since as a clone regiment the 501st (even though it is called a legion) has 4 clone battalions in it each one with its own commander. Still, the info from this video is kind of wrong. Formally, Rex was Torrent Battalion's captain, not 501st's, though he acted as so
Then she got arrested and was not a jedi anymore
I'm pretty sure that this information is wrong. There is only one General (Anakin), one Commander (Ahsoka), but multiple captains as captains were the leaders of companies and obviously you will have many companies within one Legion. For example, Rex led the Torrent Company.

@@timalsept2854 it doesn`t work like that. In our world a Captain leads a company, about 150-200 soldiers in general. Initially he was in charge of torrent company, Captains lead company's, it's a unit structure thing taken out of context by the creators.
Never understood the ranks in the Grand Army anyway... I mean; Anakin leads the Legion; witch are 12000 clones; divided in 3 divisions of 4000 each... Under him, there was Ashoka; who would lead some of the divisions if separated from Anakin (best example, Siege of Mandalore) and inmediatelly after her; there would be Rex; who would serve as second in command of either Anakin or Ashoka or lead the rest of the 501 who where not under the direct control of the two jedis... but then he was directtly on comand of Torrent Company... what?? It's a mess. As I see it; each division should have a comanding officer (a captain, maybe? Maybe liutenant; but I don't recall any clone beenrefered as one in the series... in fact, below captain I only recall the grade 'sargeant') so logically, Rex should be the Captain of one of thoose three divisions; and alongside two other captains, form the superior officers of the Legion; all under the Commander (Ashoka) who serves as the aid of the General... but then, where are the other two captains?? You could argue that they exist; but Rex been the senior officer, has direct contact with the general and late relees the order to his two peers; and because of seniroritty, in the absence of the jedis; he acts as the de-facto comanding officer of the whole legion... but then what about Cody?? He is a commander and he commands the 7th Sky Corps witch consists in 38000 men!! I mean, is the 7th divided into 3.1 legions each of them with their own commander? It's true that Cody's rank officially is Commander Clone Marshall... so it may be this... but then when Anakin was still a padawan under Kenobi and therefore a commander... he would outrank Cody? Or he simply would be a commander leading a legion under both Kenobi and Cody? XDDD It's everything a little mess... yes, I know; it's everything dummed down causekids are not gonna be triying to understand the chain of command and so allways the jedis basically outrank any other officers in the field... but at the end of the day; it makes the feel that the supposedlly massive Grand Army are just a couple of hundred dudes with a handfull of officers and very little structure... In any case; Captain, Commander or whatever; Rex filled the same role of de-facto clone leader of the 501 throgout all the war
The actual reason is Dave doesn’t understand military rank and thought Captain sounded cooler without really thinking about the repercussions.
Commander Gree was a Commander under General Luminara and Commander Barris.
This would actually not be that big of a problem if the show would portray "captain" Rex as a leader of a smaller (maybe more elite) unit or/and as a well trusted member of the command staff of Anakin or/and Ahsoka. But as we also never see any other commanders of the 501st Legion's sub units everything just falls apart. Sadly one more thing where The Clone Wars just does not hold up.
As a kid it confused me so much because I basically grew up thinking that commander was higher than captain and I felt so dumb when I got corrected
@@bangladeshi8645 It is higher.
@@TheTrueNickloseyeah, commander is higher than captain in the Star Wars universe, at least for the clone army. In real life a captain is a higher rank than commander in the US Navy

The way you edited the video was amazing. That part where you revealed "Ahsoka Tano" while she just heroically appeared was so epic lol
No, it's not the reason.
Commander of 501 was Appo, who made it from sergeant faster then Rex. Besides, Rex was commander of 332 division, not 501 Legion.
In old canon there were also such commanders of 501 as Vill, who had been COMMANDER at the same time as Appo was COMMANDER (comics series "Dark times" / "Blue harvest") and Bow, who took role of Appo, but due to Bow's blue markings and rank of COMMANDER in comic "Tyrant Fist" he also was commander by the time Vill was still alive. And Vill had died before Appo, yet when Vill died, he was no longer using blue paintjob for his phase 2 armor. That is possible since 501 LEGION consisted of different regiments like corps. Beside of those 3 guys, there also was commander Voca, who appears to be commander of Clone Commandos. And that is technically possible, cause commandos were using same hierarchy for their units, but with lesser body count. All survived Commandos, who didn't deserted, were reorganized and "Squad 40" (my guess it's a water egg and node to "Operation 40") was attached to "Vader's Fist" - 501 Legion.
So we established that there were multiple units in same legion and they had been run by clone commanders.
Now to the part where Ahsoka is a commander, so Rex can't be. Don't want to be rude, but it's... false to say the least. Rex commands "Torrent" company. Companies are run by clone captians, the lowest unit that is run by commander is battalion.
But does jedi padawan counts as clone commander due to the rank? Well it's auther would read comics where you can see generic clone commander in Phase 1 armour like on Geonosis (probably Cody in early days, but in Wookiepedia marked as "Unidentified clone trooper commander (Zaadja)"), who serves under Obi-Wan at the same time as Anakin is still a padawan (comics "Republic 67").
But ok, old canon you say. Fine. "The clone wars" 2008 series, season 2, episode 6, droid factory on Geonosis during second campaign on it. Commander Gree serves alongside with padawan Barriss Offee under master Luminara.
My theory is that since Anakin divided 501 and moved a lot of officers to 332, it created a gap in 501 command. Jessy was promoted to ARC, leaving spot for lieutenant some time prior siege of Mandalor. Vaughn was probably lieutenant in some other platoon of "Torrent"company or could be even captain of another company already by that time, so they needed someone new. Appo was already serving in "Torrent" company as sergeant and could take Jessy's place. Then since Rex become commander, spot for captain become vacant and my guess is that he could have promoted Vaughn if he wasn't captain in another company. One way or another, there was really a lot of space in officers ranks in 501 after it was divided. Ok, we ged it, how Appo could have reach Rex's position, but why Rex wasn't commander of 501 and Appo easily become such? That's the good question would answer. 501 commander in charge of Rex could have died in Coruscant battle that Anakin and Obi-Wan arrived with their troops. That's what Filony should have shown or explain since he was the one, who demoted Appo to sergeant in 2011, just to make cool node to Avatar series. But nooooo, not a single explanation, yet the guy had some fun. Just like they never explained why Rex's number is "CT", not "CC". Best of luck becoming captain with no officers training on Kamino.

Yeah but the glaring plot hole is he was not promoted to Commander when Ahsoka left the Order. Only when she returned with whereabouts of Maul a lot later and the plot needed a battalion to track him down while Episode 3 happened did Rex actually get promoted. So the delay is not explained except for Maguffin plot device.
I feel bad for him, we all have things we’ve done that we aren’t proud of. He deserves the best, and the most support.
What about Christophsis? Rex was in the 501st before Ahsoka came on Christopsis. Why wasn't he a commander then?
Obviously since it was the start of the Clone Wars, he didn't have the experience to rank then. Clones were given initial ranks through both predictive trials on Kamino and then Geonosis survivors had major boosts. However, Christopsis was chronologically right after Attack of the Clones and Geonosis, so Rex's rank was pinned by Ahsoka from the start. I don't think there was an initial commander for the 501st. If there was, he had to have died in the tremendous losses on Geonosis or Christopsis. Rex must've been about to be the company commander when Ahsoka came in.
@@valli4913 Commander Appo exists. He was the 501st Commander during Order 66 and Operation Knightfall. I assume he was promoted around the time Rex became the Commander of the 332nd.
@JetTheBaron I know, but my point is that there were only necessary appointments to certain ranks directly after Geonosis. My theory is that Rex hadn't made the cut yet, and as a frequent team with General Skywalker and Commander Tano, he wasn't able to rank up because there was no immediate need. In another timeline far far away… Anakin achieves the rank of Master, Ahsoka achieves the rank of Jedi, and Rex achieves the rank of Commander… then they all defeat Emperor Palpatine and live happily ever after, The End.
Fun cannon and legend fact, the Third Army Sector is lead by Obi Wan and Marshalm commander Cody, and the 501st led by Rex, Ashoka and Anakin are apart of that sector army, meaning cody is technically Anakin's and Ashoka's commanding officer.
there are actually multiple commanders within the 501st (Legends)
But I’d say the most fluid explanation is that Rex lead torrent company which was almost always accompanied by Anakin and Ahsoka eliminating the need for Rex to be a commander.
Also Commanders don’t often lead their men into battle, opting for a tactical position behind friendly lines where they can asses the whole battle from afar which clearly isn’t Rex’s style.

Its funny because I believe the purple clones that killed Ki Adi Mundi(cone head)in revenge of sith were all clone commander class. Starwars Battle front 2 (2005) labels that class as clone commander if I'm not mistaken. So there can be more than one clone commander
I mean, we’re all gonna say Captain Rex either way. He’s Captain Rex!
I knew it, surprised people didn't realize it with her being called commander Tano.
I find it hard to believe that in the whole of the 501st Legion the highest ranking clone was a captain
Commander is a positional rank/duty. You can have captains that are commanders just as you can have full birds that are and aren’t. It’s just based on timing and who needs to be where.
Never made sense why captain was a lower rank then commander when it’s opposite in real life
Rex was captain of a company in the 501st battalion. The next person under ahsoka would’ve been appo as the battalions equivalent to a sergeant major.
He was actually promoted to commander at the end of season7 of clone wars but had it only for like maybe a day
It was because of Ahsoka’s Role in the 501st. As being the padawan of a general, that made her commander. Therefore, Rex could only hold 1 more role which was Captain of The 501st Legion. *(I knew this already)*
You can't "become" a commander, you're are assigned a role before training.
Disney ruined the Star Wars cannon.
