Good job with that rat's nest of wires. If you run into trouble with it again, make sure the engine block has a good ground to the chassis. Also, a couple of times I had contaminated contacts with.the connections through the sockets on the firewall. 70 mph on the interstate and it just shut off. Several minutes later it was fine. Happened again several days later. Mechanic said, oh yeah, just fixed another Chrysler product with the same problem yesterday. Cleaned the socket contacts and sprayed them with dielectric compound and no more problems. Love Molars !!

A couple of things I have picked up when figuring out my Coronet's wiring is:
    - Mopar ignition switch has 2 IGN outputs, IGN 1 and IGN 2. One is active on crank, and the other is active on run. 12V from both.
    - The crank one goes to the starter relay and coil side of ballast.
    - The run one goes to the other side of the ballast, so the coil only gets around 9V when running.
    - The stud on the starter relay is fat because it's the source for interior power and horn relay. If you source power to these from somewhere else, you only need a thin 12V wire so the starter relay has enough to activate the starter. This can be interesting if you bypass the amp meter and run a wire from alternator to battery.

Hey Dan, Do some research on that Accel coil. My lousy memory tells me that the ballast resistor is only needed to protect the factory oil-filled coil during start up. Glad to see that your mighty Challenger has recovered from the nasty covid 19

G'DAY Dan, another fantastic VLOG thankyou,I believe that you were looking on the correct track, with the Ballast Resistor,as is an inherent problem with the correct wiring with the 9-12 volt switch between the start and running position, your patience is creditable mate, as I've many times become frustrated with the Ballast Resistor method of ignition system and wired 12 Volt power direct at all times, until I was advised by an auto electrician to the use of Toyota V8 petrol engine Ballast Resistor and problem sorted thereafter, but took from 76_92 before I stopped pulling the hair out! As always, Kindest Regards, Dave McLaughlin Queensland Australia

Great job getting it figured out. You were battling someone else's nightmare wiring which set you back. I've always had good luck with those MSD boxes but maybe its just me. Also for the fuel pump on/off, I started running a simple oil pressure switch. Sends power to the fuel pump when it senses oil pressure.

💯👍 That wiring was telling a store about that car is to why they most likely gave up on it and stuffed it in a container.. I'm sure it all worked right back during time it was installed till that MSD busted up & took a dive leaving previous owner second-guessing his wiring job.. They left the scotch lock end open instead of butt connecting for voltage prob testing like on a fuse.. I snagged up a sweet 69 Z28 in the late 70s cheep on a count of bad MSD box.. Lol 😆 it was looking all new & pretty on the firewall everyone didn't want to believe it was the problem.. It sure helped me out at the time" all the way to the bank 💰😆🏦 lol

The Mopar orange box was good for 6000 rpms. They used to sell a kit with the orange box,a performance curved vacuum advance distributor and wiring with resistor.I had that set up on my 440 and let me tell you it was awesome. The orange box eventually went bad and I put a stock one on it and I could tell it wasnt as hot, noticibly less power.Mopar ignition boxes were color coded the orange was 6000 rpm the chrome one was more but I dont remember how much more.I think there may have been one more color, too many years ago.I dont know if Mopar performance still makes those kits or not. Time for a 440 in a tri five????????????? that would be cool.

Stock Mopar distributors are notorious for giving grief unless it's electronic ignition. I'm building a 71 Cuda as a Hemi clone or tribute car. I'm going electronic distributor from the start. I don't believe that was stock in 1971 but my car was a 340 car originally and not a Hemi. I'm building it my way. The way I would have ordered it if I had been 20 in 71 instead of 10 yrs old. And it's going to be stick instead of automatic. Gotta have that Pistol Grip Hurst shifter.
