    The nuclear war in Fallout happens in 2077 between US & China. The reason you think it happened in the 1950s is because in this world, popular culture stagnated after WWII.

    • @tykohn
      @tykohn 10 месяцев назад +149

      Popular culture as well as technology. The transistor and microchips are never invented. Everything electronic still uses vacuum tubes and is enormous. This is all due to it being heavily inspired by the Golden Age of Science Fiction and the nuclear paranoia of the 1950’s. It’s basically what people of that period thought the future would look like.

    fallout is set in the future, in the year 2077. it looks "1950s" but in the fallout world, technology took a different turn compared to ours, thats why everything looks retro but also advance. Yeah, Fallout is set in a world where technology kinda stalled for a bit to the point the 1950s was around up into the 21st century after World War Two. In a world like this, we would be living in a world where futuristic tech met the 1950s aka retro futurism right now. There’s not much known of the pre-war world which I feel like there should be more exploration to it since a world like that is really damn interesting. I do hope the series does more detail in pre-war history.

    FYI guys : the Nuclear War took place on October 23 2077 actually. The POD in the Fallout series timeline takes place during WW2, sometime after 1942. Its just society maintained a 1950's cultural aesthetic deep into the 21st century. This alternate timeline is advanced over ours when it comes to robotic, weaponry and nuclear technology. But in this timeline the Internet and World Wide Web never really existed. So it's sort of a 1950's world of the future.

      The first bombs fell on 2077, after the China - US war. This was some time after the US liberated Alaska when China invaded it. The _first_ Fallout game was set a little after 2150, F2 about a century after that, and the rest of the games followed thereafter.
      I first thought that this show would be a loose adaptation of F1, since it also happened in southern CA. But it seems that the events of the show happened after F4, which _would_ open up a lot of possibilities for new exciting stories. Especially after the events in _Fallout: New Vegas._

    Fallout heavily uses a 1950s aesthetic, with a 1960s vision of the future (sometimes referred to as "retro futurism"), set to music from our 1930s-1960s! The nuclear apocalypse happened in 2077. Basically every Fallout game takes place _at least_ a century later. To us, the audience, Fallout is a retro vision of the future in which we culturally and technologically diverged post WW2. These things are ICONIC to every Fallout game. There's a lot of pop culture and referential Americana in Fallout. A lot of parallels to a lot of familiar things and ideas.
    Fallout is basically - China v US war in 2077 leads to nuclear war/apocalypse. In preparation for that, the US Government and Vault-Tec (fictional megacorp) create a system of self-sustaining generational Vaults for select American communities to shelter in for many decades until an unknown period in which the surface can be evaluated for resurgance. One of the main premises is that Vault-Tec and the government _specifically_ secretly orchestrated the vaults as isolated environments to conduct psychological & biological experiments on their communities over time (through diet, internal medical facilities, through internal education, etc - all the ways you can mess with people when they don't know any better, across decades). Around 122 known vaults, only 17 are un-experimented on as "control vaults". A staple of Fallout gameplay is discovering and exploring some of these experimental vaults and learning what happened in them. In a Fallout game, you're just one of the characters that exists in this world. We've been on many sides of the experience throughout the series.
    Throughout, humans have scratched some kind of survival on the violent, desolate, radiation-scarred surface. Which is why you see mutated wildlife, scarred, _ghoulish_ humans, etc. The armored, militaristic people you saw are _one_ faction of an improvised power called "Brotherhood of Steel", who seek to find and secure technology and documented history for safekeeping "to prevent another war like the one that destroyed America". There aren't really any "good guys" in Fallout - partly because extreme circumstances demand extreme measures, partly because there's no guidelines or overall authority anymore. Every faction and settlement has an objective that won't agree with many others. There are casinos and prostitution, gangs and drugs, raiders and slavers, scientists and weird religions, strange settlements, heroes and villains, quirky bad guys, quirky good guys, Mysterious Strangers, everything!
    I'm very excited for the show! It has an excellent crew behind it, and a great cast! Fallout is nostalgic, Fallout is twisted, Fallout is weird, hilarious, dark, tragic, dangerous, sweet, and more! It's silly, it's violent, it's ridiculous, it's awesome.
    The show takes place in Los Angeles, is it's own unique story, with its own unique characters, steeped in the world of Fallout. The game studio is very involved in the writing and production of the show along with the show's **excellent** production and writing team. The events of the show have not been in any game, but are considered canon to the Fallout world going forward.

    The tech and aesthetic are 1950s futurism, not because the nukes fell then, but because microchips were never invented. So its an alt-history, where the nukes fell in our future (2077), and most of the stories take place in 2200s (except 1 and 76 are 2100s).

    Jonathan Nolan was also one of the main minds behind Person of Interest, which is an amazing show y'all should definitely react to! (It's also from the mind of JJ Abrams and his company, who made LOST 'cough cough')

      @FuzzyDlop 10 месяцев назад

      JJ Abrams didn't do anything on Person of Interest, just like he didn't do anything on LOST and just like he didn't do anything(in fact even less) on Fringe. That's the only reason Fringe turned out decent.

    When asked how he got involved in the Fallout franchise, Jonathan Nolan said, "Well, about 10 years ago I said to myself, 'I am going to write the great American novel'. Then one of my friends game me a copy of Fallout 3. Now I work in television".

    The Brotherhood of Steel isn't a government. They're a militaristic order of Knights and Scribes, dedicated to preserving technology and restoring order in the wasteland. The closest thing to a government in Fallout is the Enclave, which was actually formed by the remnants of the old US government. They're usually the bad guys in the games.

    From my understanding there’s “2” factions of the brotherhood one who is bound to the maxson clan and the other elders but 76 kind of made it a little confusing like was it founded in Appalachia or was the maxson spread though out the military and they collaborated together as they overhauled the military

    • @J0J0Reference
      @J0J0Reference 10 месяцев назад

      76 didn’t mess with the origin of the Brotherhood. The Brotherhood was still very much founded by Roger Maxson after discovering government FEV experiments at the Mariposa military base. The reason why the Brotherhood was in Appalachia was because Roger used one of the few still functioning satellites shortly after the Great War to contact an old friend he served with, Elizabeth Taggerdy. He convinced her and her band of military remnants to take up the same name and cause as his Brotherhood.

    9 games. Fallouts 1-4, Fallout: New vegas, Fallout 76, Fallout shelter, Fallout tactics and Fallout brotherhood of steel. As far as I'm aware all are cannon except fallout tactics and fallout brotherhood of steel. Rumor is this show will be as well but I'm not holding my breath for that.
    Huge fallout fan, played all the games even the ones people don't know exist lol. I'm excited for this!
    Technically there are other games like the TTRPG and boardgames but not video games so just an honorable mention.

    The visual aesthetic of the Fallout series is a 40's~50's America sort of style but the actual timeline from our present day is still ahead. The Great War that destroyed the surface of what becomes the Fallout setting started on October 23 2077. It's not actually set, or starting in, the 50's. Most of the Fallout games take place some 200 years after the bombs fell, so they're largely taking place in 2277 or later with the main exception of Fallout 76 which takes place in 2102.

    most people describe fallout as a world where the culture of the 50s stagnated, but that's not exactly what it is. the world of fallout is basically the future of the world, as the people of the 1950s would have imagined it. that's why its futuristic, but in a "50s kinda way", because people would've expected technology to go forward, but maybe not in the way it actually did. there's plenty of examples of this in the real world. you can google "what people in 1900 thought the 2000s would be like" and you'll see illustrations of the year 2000 as the people of 1900 thought it would be, and you'll see futuristic stuff, but with a 1900s feel to it

    retro futureism, basically what the 40's and 50's thought the future would look like, but in this case nuclear energy solved all the old world problems, it's also set in the future.
