In the mission where you assassinate Pater and Hawkins with Middle Flatwell, Hawkins death is canon, but Pater ejects. Pater is piloting an LC later because his AC was wrecked. Also his rank is visibly changed to V.III instead of V.VIII so you can see he's capitalizing on every Vesper death that he can.

MIA is one of my favorite missions because I think Depth 2 is just a fun map to boost through and going through it in reverse while everything is going through hell was a neat way to set the stage. There’s also the complete opposite being shown between Redgun and Vesper with how G6 genuinely feels scared and betrayed by you despite being nothing but nice to you, while Pater is totally nuts and saw his team member’s deaths as promotions while also dual coping with their loss as his friends.

Dual Nature, the name of his AC hints at what might be going on here. disassociate identity disorder. There are two distinct Paters. The ambitious pragmatist, and the kind subordinate. Pater genuinely cares about his comrades, the deaths of each one cut deep, but the second face comes in. he doesn't really care that they're dead. they're gone, nothing will change that, and look at the bright side, you just got a promotion.
at this point one side is in anguish, seeking to avenge his dead friends, and the other seeks to ingratiate themselves to snail by killing the mutt.

The main thing of Pater is his dual personality, his AC is even named "Dual Nature", he seems to be always fond of his comrades and even sad for each of their deaths, but seconds later his mind always bursts and consoles himself for going up the ranks, and procedes to act like a psycopath that only cares about his own power and ambition, no matter the cost. He has genuine connections with each of them and from what he says when he kills you here, i feel like whenever he gets angry about dying after just having made the new rank. it feels more like he was unable to live up to the number like the predecessor he just watched die. like 'I just made V.V!". It feels like he said it more out of anguish that he couldn't do the number justice like Hawkins in his eyes instead of being angry he just lost the rank. Every time he says a rank has a nice ring to it. It feels like he's saying it to keep himself together, like "Hawkins is dead but hey, at least i'm V.V now right?" he always says it in this shaky, teary voice, like he wanted to earn the rank by becomng better than them, not because they died and it just so happened to be passed dwn to him, he truly was one of my top five favorites along with michigan, ayre, cinder and walter

I'm pretty sure this guy is meant to be a form of Patches. I also remember back in DS2 with a named NPC named Pate who also behaved very Patches like. Sure he doesn't lure you to treasure and kick you off a cliff but he seems like he's kind of a snake who's feigns what he really wants. He feels bad for V3 or V5 depending on who dies and then immediately think about what it means for himself. Dual Nature indeed.
