  • Lisa Gade reviews the 2017 refresh of the slim and light ThinkPad with pen and 360 degree hinges- the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga second generation. The laptop has a 14” display that’s available with your choice of IPS and OLED panels. It runs Windows 10 on Intel 7th gen Kaby Lake dual core 15 watt Ultrabook CPUs (Core i5 and i7) with 8 or 16GB DDR3LP RAM and PCIe NVMe SSDs.
The refresh adds two Thunderbolt 3 ports, also supporting USB-C Gen. 2. The backlit Wave keyboard replaces the Lift n’ Lock keyboard and allows for relatively deep key travel. A Wacom AES pen is included and stows in a silo in the laptop’s body where it recharges quickly. The convertible Ultrabook has stereo speakers with Dolby audio, a fingerprint scanner and relatively long battery life. Pricing currently starts at $1,682.

Yeah, if you watch her other videos it's clear she also has an obviously much higher technical expertise than the traditional youtube tech reviewers (guys in their mid twenties).. (E.g., by making specific comments about wifi chipsets and compatibility rather than focusing on superficial characteristics)

Yeah I've spent hours looking for a good tech reviewer and Lisa is in the top spot for informational research which I weight heavier when it comes to my personal purchasing decisions.
She needs more fame, regular viewership, and regular revenue.
If I was a richer man, I'd be offering to help sponsor her.
If I owned or managed a tech company, I'd have advertising contract with her.

There is inbuilt Ethernet hardware, and the proprietary jack uses it, but a USB LAN adapter does not.
If you use the proprietary jack, your MAC address will remain the same even if you change adapters since it's kind of like converting mini RJ45 to full size RJ45.

Small "warning" for those interested in the OLED model (which I just bought): Whilst the screen is good in many ways, it actually has several optical drawbacks which few people mention: Whilst viewing angles are superior to most LCD in terms of brightness, they are actually worse in terms of colour uniformity. From side angles you will notice the screen goes blue for example. If you are particularly eagle-eyed you will even notice this effect when looking directly onto a white screen whereby you can see slight colour variation due to tiny viewing angle changes within your field of view. The bigger optical drawback IMO is the colour distortions that appear pixels change, typically from dark to light. For example, when scrolling white text on black background, the text goes slightly green. After some investigation I found there are test images which cause some horrible smearing to appear on OLED panels. The classic example is brown on a black background. As you scroll the brown bar will smear into purple. Its VERY obvious and unsightly and is obviously a core problem with the technology. Luckily you don't see this combinations of colours often. So I would say OLED is good for photographers, but TERRIBLE for videographers due to the moving/changing colours. This colour smearing can sometimes appear as ghosting. Lastly while the high contrast is great in theory, most digital design e.g. websites/apps are not designed for OLED technology. Because they assume LCDs for media consumption, they design for black being slightly grey, so things often appear too dark on OLED. In conclusion, unless you are desperate for OLED I suggest saving money and battery life by going IPS.

On most computer systems, localhost resolves to the IP address 127.0.0.1, which is the most commonly used IPv4 loopback address, and to the IPv6 loopback address ::1. The name localhost is also a reserved top-level domain name, set aside to avoid confusion with the definition as a hostname.

Thanks for the review, Lisa. Best laptop reviews on RUclips! Just upgraded from my ThinkPad Yoga 14, to the X1 Yoga 2nd gen with i7, 1TB, 16GB, and yes...that incredible OLED screen (on your recommendation). Just like never being able to go back after the getting used to the performance of SSD, a few hours on OLED makes me realize I won't be able to go back to LED. It's like my last screen was colorblind. Compared with my ThinkPad Yoga 14 with older i5 and SSD - this X1 Yoga is much faster. I'm glad the keyboard feels about the same. Another user asked about scaling. I set mine to 134% which roughly approximates FHD resolution. Readable size with no fuzzy text.

I gotta say Lenovo does an amazing job with the Thinkpad series, especially the carbon and X1 Yoga. The super minimalist design is so modest and unpresuming yet the hardware underneath is amazing and the build materials is top-notch. It's just such a functional, rugged ultrabook that really stands out only to those who seek that kind of performance and durability, while totally putting off those that look for the flash and cosmetic design while totally ignoring functionality.

just picked up a used top of the line (7600u, 16gb of ram, and 512gb ssd) oled model for under $500 and it was easily the best pc purchase I've made. Everything out performs, and feels better than, the dell that I purchased a few years ago. While the newest model could be better for a lot of people using it in the work place, I can't see almost anything being better for the price. The only thing I dislike about it is the speakers, but I've never expected much from laptop speakers so it's really not a big disappointment.

Great review and thanks for pulling the back off. I have not ventured that far with my own yet!
I have the privilege of using one of these with the OLED screen (still hard to source I do say...) for work. Its a product aimed quite squarely at professionals who are on the move. The premium for the OLED is worth every cent for those who have the chance. Referring directly to its base cost, you are paying for what is a very robust yet extremely light platform which is a joy to use in any situation for a wide range of purposes. If you have a diverse job description, this is the business-grade Swiss army knife.
For the curious, the 512gb NVMe drive appears to be an OEM model of the Samsung Evo 960s. I am getting just North of 3gb/s reads on CrystalDisk tests.
I would describe it as the Bentley of the laptop world. It doesn't scream "look at me!" like a Porsche/Ferrari/Lamborghini. It is something which demands the recognition of those within its range of influence and states without any flash or flare "I mean f#$king business". :D

A review from someone who wasn't sent a "loaner" (i.e. "highly tested machine so we don't get bad reviews") and has used this machine for work for over a month:
The fan, in fact, does come on quite a bit when doing actual work. Light browsing/editing doesn't trigger it, but it isn't completely silent and the fan is decently loud, enough that I have to turn my speakers up if I'm listening to a quiet video.
The left side of the palm rest has a little bit of "give" when I press on it, as if the palm rest piece of the chassis doesn't sit flush with the bottom piece that it's attached to. Not super terrible, but on an almost $3k machine, not good.
When plugged in, a hear a mechanical buzzy sound from the place where the power adapter plugs in to the USB C charging port. The noise changes slightly whenever I move the mouse. It's not always there, and it's very quiet, but noticeable in a quiet room.

Great Computer, but I have two complaints
I was fortunate to get one of these two months ago through my work. I have an i7 version with a 1080p screen. The computer is replacing a Surface Pro 3 that I've been using for the past three years. I probably would have gone with another Surface Pro if MSFT had Thunderbolt 3 on their new model, but this limitation on the Surface Pro created an opportunity for Lenovo to get my business as this new model well equipped with the "future proof" connector.
This computer is great; however, I have two complaints:
    (1) No external volume control. For some reason, Lenovo dropped the external volume control on this model. This is a major headache when I'm not using the computer in the traditional laptop mode. I hope they bring back external volume buttons on future models. I premium cost convertible model like this should really have the volume buttons.
    (2) The fan runs way too much. Even when the computer is doing just light tasks like web browsing the fan will kick on and be distractingly loud. Hopefully, this will be fixed with a firmware update.

Dear Lisa You are the only one straight forward no sales quirks pro reviewer on the net. Thank you much for your work. How would you compare the x1 Yoga 2nd Gen to the Toshiba X20w-D(111) regarding horse power on endurance, rigidity of lid and when closed, fixation of screen in laptop mode while under vibrations (like on a train, plane, bus) and amount of heat and noise under longer load? Also, any chance you will soon have reviewed the HP Elitebook x360 G2 (and could do a triple face off x1y vs x20w vs EB x360 as they share the pretty similar specs and are the only MIL STD specs having TB3 future proof)? Last but not least: after some reading (mostly NB) it looks like under 30min+ load, the x20w maintains 2 GHz while x1y maintains 1.9 GHz and HP maintains a desperate 1.2 GHz only; meaning especially with the HP contestant a demanding user (like me) would buy a 2.8/tb3.9 GHz device which actually is able to reliably run but a dying 1.2 GHz (which actually is my exact experience with my both HP Elitebook 2530p and HP Compaq Evo n620c :( )... so maybe you could add a prolonged Prime95+Furmark+combinated test (or some other way to confirm or dissipate these my stress load findings)?

I love my 1st gen w/OLED and 1TB SSD. Been hoping to see a bit of an upgrade in the graphics/processing department . . . it can handle my lightroom/photoshop needs, but is a bit slow for that. Looks like they also took away the volume rocker on the side? That's too bad . . . very convenient when in tablet or tent mode. I guess I'll wait for 3rd gen and hope they upgrade graphics performance and give the volume rocker back.
    Thanks for the great review!

I love everything such as design, portability and all of this thinkpad x1 but one thing resists me from buying is the gpu. So sad that it has only intel HD graphics. Hope for the config to build gtx 1050 like the new surface book. Btw awesome review. :)

Dear Lisa, I am from Germany and have now after the third generation of the Lenovo X1 tablets appeared, for less than 1,000 € / dollar granted this second generation :-) I'm actually thrilled, but had a problem with the first set up: During Windows Updates (#1803 and 1809 - the big ones :-), my X1 2nd gen 2017 tablet no longer loads temporarily. Do you know this phenomenon or is my device defective? Thank you and best regards from germany

Hi Lisa . Please compare This x1 yoga vs yoga 720 vs yoga 920?

Hi, this video is awesome. I think you should add litle bit more lighting (white light) from the front left or top in third person view, because this laptop is so matte black. In product view (first person view) the lighting is better.

Nice product, but 1811 EURO for a duo core start config... man that hurts.
€ 2.023 to get 512 GB so i can actually use the damn thing.

Wow! They actually sent you the Lenovo Active Pen 2. Wonder if it really makes the difference in the Lenovo Yoga 720. It'll be interesting to compare all the 4,096 level sensitivity devices around different technologies like a 3-way comparison, maybe with: N-trig (SP2017), AES (Yoga 720), and EMR (Galaxy Book 12" 2017).

It does work better on the Yoga 720 compared to the ThinkPad Pro pen. Better pressure curves, straighter diagonals. I still like the Wacom Bamboo Ink dual protocol pen the best (the one that just came out).

How does the wave keyboard feel?
The one think keeping me away from getting things like the spectre x360 was the fact that in tablet mode, I could still feel the keys, and I just didn't like that feeling.
I've been trying to find a store that had a X1Y2 for months now to try it out for myself, but none have it.
Does this new wave keyboard feel truly flat, like the back of an actual tablet, when it's in tablet mode?

Any idea what happened to the IR camera(for Windows Hello login) that was on the specifications (like the Iris graphics ;) announced at the beginning of the year? It appears you can specify it if buying on the UK Lenovo website but not the US one. Possibly the only thing missing from this laptop, besides a reasonable price of course!

I know waiting for new Technology is stupid because its so progressive, but this time I would suggest people wait for Intel's new laptop 'U' processors, because they are now going to have Quad-Core instead of the 7th Gen Dual Core, but that's just my two cents.

It will be interesting to see how Intel Coffee Lake quad core low wattage CPUs perform-- twice the cores but 2/3 the clock speed=??.

Was going to order this laptop with an i7-7600U today BUT I came across a user review that said he configured the laptop with an i5-7300U instead because he believed that heat issues would cause the i7 to throttle thus depriving him of the benefits of what is should be the more capable processor! If so, upgrading would be a waste of money, I would think. Would you have any advice about this for those of us who might be considering this model? (Also if this is indeed true, I would like to know if this is generally a problem in laptop computers or is it more of a problem in ultrabooks because of their cramped interiors.) Thanks.

Susan I did some minor research on reddit and it seems to be a 7600U problem. Apparently the 7500 is a better

    • @im2late
      @im2late 7 лет назад +1

Gabe Merritt Thank you. That's a bit disappointing since the 7500 can only be configured with 8gb RAM in this model. If I want 16gb RAM I would need to order the core i5 7300. :( Can you refer me to the information you found at reddit either by link or by key words? Thank you.

Gabe Merritt Very helpful, thanks! I guess I will have to consider the relative merits of the 7300U w/16gb ram vs the 7500U with 8gb RAM. I have a personal guru who may be able to help me decide. Appreciate your help.

Do other ultrabooks have the same problem? HP spectre x360 for example. That one has 8th gen i7. I'm choosing between that and X1Y.
