- Three-day atmospheric river event clobbers Southern California with unprecedented rainfall and life-threatening flash flooding, mud flows, and land slides. Over 12” of rainfall was recorded at UCLA, making this a 1 in 1000 year rain event. This video shows the impacts across the region, including an incredibly swollen Malibu Creek.
One thing to note. FEB 8-10TH 1978 same storm, 90mph winds same 8 counties same disasters. 8 counties declared state of emergency by President Carter.
Wow
Wow, exactly 46 years ago! I bet this doesn't happen very often!!
Thanks, Reed. You and the team are working hard. We appreciate you, the mods and other team members x
Thank you Reed for following these storms. You have done an excellent job with showing others of what's going on with the weather all around. For the ones that don't comprehend his strength this man has gone through tornadoes and other storms. Tons of people have watched him over the years and think he's a heck of a lot stronger than the actual meteorologists of our local news media 😊
Thank you, Reed Timmer and crew, for all your hard work to keep us informed. Good footage! - ACD
everything north of San Diego got hit hard. San Diego got a lot of rain too but ehh it was average for ones like me that live in high areas, on top of canyons, the highest points in SD. it was nice to hear the rain. its too bad for ones south of the 8 freeway in SD. thats why housing is cheaper down there though.
One suggestion: a lot of cameras have a setting where you can have the time and date of the footage being filmed. In up-to-date weather situations like this I believe that function to be a huge benefit
I wonder if that impacts sales of these videos to news and other outlets.
I don't think REED has to worry about that too much.
I remember when the LA riverbed overflowed back in the 70's. We lived just 3 blocks from it and our whole town was flooded.
This certainly gives us a reminder that WATER RULES.
Looks like all the water is being returned to California with interest.
It’s really gratifying to see that the downtown LA river channel seems to be ‘taking it’. It’s a big mess up in the hills, now we get the cleanup … where the drama is more about our response than the actual event. Thanks for the overview of the area.
Thanks for being out in it and sharing. Stay safe. The storm clouds over the ocean looked like a big wet rag ready to wring out.
Good description.
Wow that’s a roaring river. Much Love stay safe
Shouldn't you have systems in your area to somehow capture that water and allow it to soak into the water table rather than let it run off into the sea?
I always look forward to your videos and learn about what weather can cause, much appreciation for going out and filming all these!
The few times in my life I visited California, there was always a water shortage. This is a blessing to me!!
that’s like saying ‘omg last time i visited here it was so cold, now this forest fire enveloping everything and causing all this damage is a blessing to me’ lmao.
It all goes out to the ocean. They won't build any reservoirs to keep it.
it's only a blessing to you because you don't live in California 💀
A yummy blessing when all of the sewage overflows into the flood waters
Not water shortage it’s a Semi Arid desert where 350,000 people live.
The hydrology is not meant for that. They solved this problem with dams and Mulholland. But now Newsom blows the dams.
It’s been 1000 years since the 2022 storms? Wow time flies!
HUH?
@Roadie he's comparing it to the strong 2020 rain we had that seemed just as bad .
Wait until the earthquakes.
@@Sojournerjohn316 Earthquakes happen everyday in CA.
@@jacobburns3515 not these kind.
Great coverage Reed of this historic event!! Also thanks to Brian for his expertise in putting all this together! NSC
NBC reported quote: The strongest atmospheric rivers can move anywhere between seven and 25 times as much water as the flow of the Mississippi River, which is the second longest river in North America and has a watershed that reaches 32 states, according to the national park service.
Appreciate your efforts and great camera work 🎉
A little info on the locations would be appreciated. maybe label the video shots?
This is the best video on the net documenting the flooding in California. Great drone work!
Awesome footage Reed. Very slick and professional. Stay safe and thanks for the important reports. NSC!!!!!
Thanks dude, really appreciate your adventurous spirit.
Thanks Reed, it was awesome to have you in California for the event.

I was looking at the positive! How clean the air must be now! Nice!
Thanks for the footage! Definitely much needed rain here in Southern California!
I'm so glad I got out of L.A.
Yeah LA definitely not the place to be if you don't like rain.
Love your early morning waves. The colors were beautiful
That’s such a beautiful drone view of this wash doing exactly what it’s meant to do! They’re a bit daunting tho as we see the power of the water as it runs!
God bless you Reed for you and your team you've all worked so hard in your lives and your videos be safe out there such amazing videos Prayers to California
Amazing work Reed ❤
Stellar work Reed and team! Thanks!
Thanks!
Yes, water flowing through a canal and river bed is unusual. Really? Why are the canals and river beds there to begin with? I would hazard to guess they are for water, flood waters? Snow melt? Water that came regularly enough that canals were needed to stop flooding in populated areas. River beds are dried rivers. Rivers used to flow through them regularly.
I remember the canals always being full when I was a kid here in California. The news channels were always warning people not to swim in the canals because of how swift the current was under the surface. What they didn't say was that fertilizers were mixed in the water for irrigating crops. This was 40 years ago. I don't remember when the canals went dry. In the 90s maybe. Don't swim in the canals. The currents are swift under the surface.
Ever seen Terminator or Grease??? That is the LA river not a Canal. I live next to an actual canal for PG&E and So Cal Edison hydroelectric power plants. They still told you to stay out of it when there was water in them but yeah it is rare to see after man has changed how the entire state looks. Bakersfield used to be a Wetlands now it's a concrete and asphalt hell hole that gets to 110+ in summers. That wetland would have cooled off that air and made rain in the Sierras, but when you start messing with mother nature you get Dry river beds for 10/12 months a year.
There are a lot more miles of canal these days. When I lived SoCal 30+ years ago I remember seeing footage of a kid or two wash down canals by these storms.
Your donate footage on this helps tell the story from above Thanx Reed
Thank you for keeping us updated Dr. Reed and team. Please be careful and safe while out in all elements.
Great footage and coverage, Dr. T.!!!
So appreciate your reporting Reed!
Thank you Jane
Awesome job read thank you man stay safe brother
Great footage! Thank you for sharing! 😮
As much as people hate the (myself included) concrete down on the river it sure has saved lots and lots and lots of lives and homes.
Hi Reed, my 3 children graduated from F Hills s hools and 2 of them had your mom for their teacher. I love your videos, thank you for great reporting!
After the flooding I would be looking for gold in the mtns😂
Thanks for your great reporting.
Excellent content! Hope you are staying hydrated & dry.
Wow. Stay safe, California! ❤
That is wild! Thank you for sharing this, I was wondering how everyone was doing out there. Crazy weather, I am sure people around there are thankful that you shared what was happening there. Just Keep Chasing! You help so many people!
The sounds of the rushing water really drives home the point!
Amazing coverage Reed!
Dude! I'm in Santa Monica. Where I am there's flooding but no soil movement. (uhhhh, YET!) This is CRAZY! I like you and your channel! THNX
Beautiful footage Reed!
thanks Reed, love your content
Brian great work dude!! Thank you Reed! NSC!!!
Great work as always Reed,
Nice work Dr. Timmer!
Appreciate the quality video reporting
Thank you Reed for what you do, are you heading to Phoenix? We are expecting heavy rain today and tomorrow.
clean air with all the rain
Greetings from Central California. The 'once in a hundred years flood' happens once or twice every 8-10 years.
This was some extreme coverage!
Thank you Lord for the abundance rain. Thank you Tim for sharing all your information :)
Love the hat! Stay safe!
Great work Reed
shared, stay safe my friend, be carreful
If only that river could be directed into Lake Mead!
I've been watching you for a long time. Stay safe and keep getting footage. Don't forget me, bro one day I'll be chasing with you. That's on my bucket list.
You know your in LA area when you see a Bentley driving through flooded areas 😂
Love living in this once 100 years rain storms
you kick ass, Reed
such raw force and power.
Respect Mother Nature, she is Wonderful.
I used to live in California, but after leaving at September 2021 I never thought something like this would happen. After so long dealing with the dry/fire season…
Wow that’s wild! Never stop chasing! Reed is the goat 🐐
love it god at work
Good footage!
WOW! raw power, nice one
really njoy the footage 👌
The last time I've seen it this bad was in January 2005 where it seemed we had rain everyday in that month (we didn't, but it sure felt like it.)
How do we find out what category is determined for an AR storm? I can't find any reference to a Cat 5 or other category on NWS
I heard some say So Cal area needed a good flush. Thx Reed.
Small price to live in paradise ❤
Calling California paradise is insane
Monsoon level rain !
Well, all the water from the LA river just flowed to the ocean 🌊
Yikes! Thanks!
Never seen the LA river look anything close to that full. I always thought the concrete river walls were over kill, but now I they are not.
Yep. The river walls only matter for a few times every decade or so. But when you need them, they are literally life savers.
Looks to me like the spillway is working just like it was designed.
Stay safe handsome 👍🏻
That area of Beverly glen near Beverly Hills is all narrow streets and hills with canyons and many of them are steppe. Not surprised they got all that debris coming down from the hills. With the ground being so saturated, future rains this month could make this even worse.
Never underestimate the POWER of water and wind.
Some scary videos, Reed. It looks like there will be catastrophic damage in places !
1 in a 1000 yrs? That's what the talking heads said about San Diego two weeks ago. Glad the native population kept such good weather records.
It means the probability of it happening in any year is 1/1000. They can tell that by looking at geologic records of previous debris flow and modelling.
WOW …stay safe
Hi Reed. Did you hear about the tornado warning in San Diego? Welcome to California. It's a rarity to see you here in my home state.
Have you researched the series if ark storms in 1857 that flooded sacramento and the central valley for weeks. Not a thousand year storm but California living on display
