A killer will kill, no matter what. He targeted victims that talk about suicide, because they are vulnerable, as any coward killer, he went after vulnerable people.

What I dont like bout this guy is that he does all the extra things before killing. Dont wanna mentioned those extra things. Killing is still wrong, but what he does is not just killing. He also dishonoured his victims, the fact that they dont even know him. Complete stranger. And all those things he does for what? Attention? Why he bored? Hobby. The fact that the mentality test shows normal. I can't blame the parents for being real mad and I bet some of em might even wanna kill the guy slowly for what he did and i cant blame em at all. i'm japanese and i've lived in japan all my life, almost every topic that is inconvenient is taboo here. social harmony and conformity is prioritized, there's even a saying that says "the nail that sticks out gets hammered down". conversations about mental health almost never happens, it's just kind of an understood thing that a lot of people are suffering, but no one ever really does anything about it. sometimes it's even romanticized, there's this awful aesthetic called "病みかわいい” making mental illness seem "kawaii" (sorry it kinda got ranty i'm like real upset about this but idk what to do bc how do you fix society ahh)

I don't know if it would really happen but maybe the other inmates would make him regret doing what he did more so than he did when he said that he only regretted it because he got caught.

I always disagree with this in jail you learn and adapt some actually be happy in jail. Idk in japan but in the us prison is actually just a way for the government to make money off criminals and basically make them slaves in many ways.
A person who takes a life should lose theirs as soon as possible the only reason id want them not to be killed is because some could be wrongfully accused and those people don't deserve death.

I was born and raised in Japan, and I actually had a friend whose mother killed herself by jumping from my apartment building when my friend was just 8 or something. I guess one of the main problems we have is that, we just keep things to ourselves until we both physically and mentally can't handle anymore. That's I think why so many people kill themselves or commit such disturbing crime cases like this one. We have nobody to talk about mental health. We don't have many places to go to get help. I feel like overall Japan is a safe country compared to the U.S. (I currently live in the States) or other places, like we don't have to worry about getting shot randomly, but when something bad happens, it's always so bad. It's really sad.

    1. Yes, he should have absolutely been given the life sentence just because he wanted the death sentence (without the possibility of getting out, of course).
    2. I'm not Japanese but I think people suffering from mental illness, especially those who are suicidal are far more vulnerable, especially in societies that see mental health as a taboo subject. This is why it is so dangerous to withdraw support from people who are going through something so horrible. These people are just soft targets to monsters like Shiraishi. He knew that it was very likely that his victim would a. agree to meet him more easily than someone who was not in pain and b. would not inform anyone about where they were going. Separate comment but he likely kept the bones because even a layman can typically identify many types of human bones. It would be a bit more difficult identifying a type of chopped meat and fat material without context like bone matter and organs though. Bones are also good identifiers for gender, age, health, and even race for experts. It makes sense to me that he thought that way honestly.
You don't have to worry about that kind of stuff getting caught until you're actually getting caught, if that makes sense. It'll just be stored away until it becomes an issue, really. Flesh decomposes a hell of a lot faster and more disgustingly than bone, so it's a lot easier to keep too. I'm sure him keeping the heads were for similar purpose of identification, though I'm not sure how he kept those from decomposing even with refrigeration. Did he dehydrate them somehow? @@sexybutt999 Humans have three distinct races, Caucasoid(Europeans and those of that dissent), Negroid(African and Arabic), Mongoloid(Asian). There's also a secret fourth one apparently, for the Australians, but I'm not going to talk about that one since the majority of the world is the three above, including most of Australia. Anyways, you can tell a lot from bones, like how many times a woman has given birth, or if she's given birth at all. You can also make an inference on how old the person was when they died, the better shape the bones are in the more accurate the inference. Despite what people say, we actually do have subtle bone structure differences between us, so a Caucasoid skull is going to look different from a Negroid skull and so on(I think it's very subtle differences in bone width and height like the nasal cavity is slightly larger or something). In fact, even the hairs on our body are distinguishable, so a Mongoloid hair is different from a Negroid hair, no matter how similar they look on the surface. There are a lot of things you can tell from bones, gender, age, race, a stab in the dark about how many children they birthed if it was more than 2, and even where they grew up(this is done through a really cool technique using drinking water and teeth). If you're really interested, you could look it up, or if you'd like to learn passively, you could watch forensic files(they go over all this stuff over the course of the show).

Sadly It's not surprising.. Since I was a little, I've been exposed by medias to cases like these in Japan. Mental health is definitely a taboo if not considered by many older generation of Japanese people as a somewhat unacceptable as a scientific reason why people has mental issues. I think that is why people like Shiraishi can easily approach his victims this way. I think Shiraishi and some killers of cases like these are somewhat mocking the Nation for their ignorance. I'm half Japanese and spent a lot of time growing up in Japan btw. Great content as usual.

I'm so jealous! I would kill to live in Japan (no pun intended, kind of I guess). Every country has their issues though as well. Hell, traditional Mexican culture (I live right on the border of the US and Mexico) has a similar kind of outlook on even the most "mainstream" of mental illnesses, such as depression, except their views are very patronizing. I'm not sure if Japanese culture would rather just ignore the existence of mental illness and therefore just don't acknowledge it as a whole or if they actively put people down who mention it or exhibit signs of anything.
I wish we lived in an age where mental illness was far more accepted, as we'd likely have much better remedies. Considering a good chunk of them are chemical-based, we'd probably have better alteration techniques for brain chemistry by now if we had given more empathy to those afflicted....
If you suffer from any mental illness, then I'm sorry you had to live with such a harsh aspect in your culture. It can't be easy.... If not, I still feel for you. Emotional health is always a complex topic....

Whenever Nature vs. Nurture comes up with these cases I feel like I need to bring this up, especially with this case: Anti-Social Personality Disorder (ASPD) is characterized by a lack of normal functioning in a specific area of the frontal lobe, resulting in a marked lack of empathy (which I feel rings very true to Shiraishi's lack of regret for what he did) which can lead to behavior that people label as psychopathic or sociopathic. But not everyone who has ASPD is a serial killer or even a criminal, some studies have suggested that the main difference between people with ASPD who become criminals and those who don't is how they were raised. Both nature and nurture play equal roles, ASPD can be genetic or caused by injury, but there are other environmental factors that determine what behavior is he most prominent.

@@almostpalindrome2957 I won't claim to be an expert, but when it comes to mental disorders, as a general rule they can be treated, but not completely "cured" in the way a physical illness can be cured. Unfortunately, due to the nature of ASPD and those affected by it, they do not tend to respond well to treatment, because they themselves not think there is a problem. I have not heard of a medication that can affect ASPD and therapy is often ineffective due to the client's tendency to lie to their therapists in order to make it seem as though they are improving.

This guy's behavior smacks of some heavy dissociative personality disorder to me. I have dissociative personality disorder and there are many times where extremely difficult, stressful, and life-altering situations hold next to no meaning for me. Where I would basically accept whatever events came my way just because I was essentially a weird kind of bored being stuck in the same loop of actions. It's a really difficult thing to explain...I don't know. That's just what I think, anyway. I'm no expert by any means. The fact that he doesn't really bother hiding or lying about evidence once he's been caught also gives me this vibe. There's just a significant lack of self-preservation present with illnesses like these that make them so foreign to most normal people....
Sad for his victims though...especially considering their increased vulnerability. Predators of all kinds do almost always go for the weakest though, and that entails looking for whatever is weakest that would be the biggest detriment to the predator (for animals, physical harm; for humans, a lot of time the law or mental manipulation). I hope their families got some consolidation in the end...somehow him not lying about it would've maybe made me feel an iota better if I was in that situation, though I couldn't be sure since I just don't know. I hope the families are doing okay. :(

@@taimurayub5806 there are multiple different disorders that fall under the dissociation category, although it is true that DID is most well known. dissociation is also a symptom of several other complex disorders but it does make me consider that it may (or may not) be why his psych evals came back as mentally stable. dissociation is definitely not the most well researched and because of its nature it’s not unreasonable to thing that he “flew under the radar” when being evaluated. just some of my input, but i can def see how DID could be a consideration, again due to its nature, alters can stay dormant for years and years and it’s hard to simply “predict” when they emerge

I spoke to an FBI agent who said there are many more active serial killers in the US then people think but unless they can pinpoint a specific community that is in trouble, it’s not public because it would just cause unwanted panic that supposedly wouldn’t actually protect anyone.

as a japanese, in i way i see why takahiro would pick young women that want to commit suicide. as in japan when the police get calls about suicide it isnt alarming and its not their top priority. it also applies to young women because "you know girls, they probably run off to their friends house or rebel against parents" so the japanese police doesn't see it as a huge problem.

In Japan they separate the trash and have bags that are transparent and have your name with address written on it. They check the trash to make sure it was separated properly and will return it if it was done incorrectly. Apparently there is also not really any public trash cans. So maybe this is why he kept the bones?

There is good and bad every where.

Maybe in his head he figured that if he tossed the bones then someone might find them, since they're solid and a lot of them are of good size and it's hard to mistake a human skull for anything other than what it is, and figure out that he was the one who dumped them in the trash so he kept them figuring that if he just kept them hidden where he knew where they were and could keep an eye on them then nobody would find them and his chances of getting caught would decrease.

Well done, Aria. I think that he never got rid of the bones bc they are the only thing that is definitely identifiable as human, if not chopped up. He probably had nowhere to dump them and if he did, DNA (etc) would put the authorities/families on the trail that something terrible, like him, had happened to them.
