I'm going to ask for something maybe a little weird...but could you maybe think about changing the titles so they focus on the victims? It almost feels like it immortalises the perps. I notice sometimes you do this and other times you don't. Completely up to you of course, but just thought I would float it. I do love the way you tell these stories!

I always HATE how those being stalked are told to start their lives anew, they’ve to change their job, address, phone number, email address, name, move to another town, it’s like those being stalked are being punished instead of the stalker, who gets to continue their life
thats all due to the way we handle crime. can't punish the criminal until he does the crime. no government wants to waste resources on a person that may or may not do what the potential victim fears.
I was just going to say the same thing. The system puts all of the responsibility on the victim. They have to save themselves. The don't get any "help" until they're dead. Then the system goes "Oops! Sorry about that!" 😡
Exactly. I had to do exactly this ten years ago. I moved, switched jobs, got new numbers, emails, a different car and plates, and changed my name. I deleted and had to get deleted (meaning: had to contact old forums or websites) anything about me online, and had to instruct friends and family to never give any of my information to anyone. The police did nothing, since nothing physical had happened yet. It is completely sickening. The stalker overdosed around 2015, so I feel fine talking about it now.
I think the laws need to be changed. The stalker goes to a mental asylum or jail based on the facts of the case. That way, the stalker is punished instead.
@@nerium.nerium but for how long? this guy in the video dedicated his entire life to ending hers. he spent years hunting her. so if you put him down for 5 years, even 10. To me it would make no difference, the only thing that kept him clinging to life is the thought of ending hers. Human rights groups would argue that keeping him locked up without a serious crime is inhumane. So many things would go right for him to achieve this disaster.
The Law absolutely failed her. Giving out her information, only locking him up for a year, uninstalling the cameras and stopping the patrols. Really? Just horrible. May the victim rest in peace
I think the oversight in details during the court proceedings were definitely a big slip up, but I wouldn't put much blame on the police dept. The fact they were willing to even put up CCTV cameras and extra patrol for several months, just for one family, is pretty good. I have a hard time believing police in the US would even do half as much for the same thing.

@@jamestarrou3685 Man the Japanese police are known to be extremely incompetent and complacent. There’s a lot out there about how violent criminals in Japan are let off EXTREMELY easily, and the judicial system is so broken that most trials are just for show.
The one thing that frustrates me the most about these stalking cases is how much power the stalkers have over their victims, they're practically invincible until they seriously hurt or kill the person they're tormenting. Even in cases like this where the victim does everything right, the stalker is still able to somehow find them because of incompetent people.
The government was so incompetent. How do you leave her address to the stalker and also force them to pay so much for security cameras. Those security cameras could’ve been live saving but “muh capitalism”
@@ragingflare123 If those cameras were still there she might've been able to spot him lurking around and allowed her to react accordingly. I can understand removing the patrols, but uninstalling the cameras just seems so unnecessary, especially when the person who needs them is at risk.

The fact that the husband was compensated $10k for this truly infuriates me. Honestly, a flat-out refusal for any compensation would have been MUCH less insulting. Just wow.

It's like those prestige boarding schools where everything and anything is perfect because it's the culture and everyone is happy that way. Humans are "wild" and are "tamed" by strict restrictions. So if there's no visible restrictions, I suspect that the justice system is mainly about sweeping things under the carpet. Many victims suffer in silence
as someone who watches a lot of true crime, this is one of the saddest cases I think I've ever heard. she tried so hard, underwent so many preventative measures, and was on a path of happiness...yet she was left unprotected by lazy and neglectful agencies and ultimately, murdered. honestly so heartbreaking.

Japan’s judicial system is awful. Because the violent crime rate is relatively lower than other developed nations, they let their guard down and the police have become complacent. When an actual violent crime occurs criminals are let off extremely easily (if the cases are even properly investigated at all).
This kind of thing happens all the time in every country in the world. How many times have I heard and watched similar cases right here in the USA. It's a sad and tragic story but unfortunately it's not unique to Japan. Great job Coffee House Crime you did this story well. 🤔🇺🇸😔

That is the kind of shitty work the authorities used to do back in the day when stalking wasn't taken seriously. I'm so glad that things improved, but it's a shame that it took a person's death for us to get there. Here in Japan this incident is very famous to this day.
True. I was actually rooting for it to be a case where the person being stalked survives. But then again, stalkers are often invincible and will stop at nothing. Tbh, I have arrived at the conclusion that even if you play your cards right, death is often unavoidable. It's best to live whatever life you have in the best way possible and I think Rie Hideto lived her short life to the fullest. As goes the quote by J.K. Rowling "“Do not pity the dead. Lol. That thing did nothing. It basically made simplistic takes on his life with an incomplete mindset on how to live one’s life. Then said that he should feel better now due to it and his depression is his fault. One of those people who say “just be happy”. It was toxic. Though, that doesn’t mean that he should have killed it. He should have moved on and gotten some real help and get with someone better. Then, he keeps it quiet and away from it since if it figures out he is doing well, then it might try to kill him and possibly his wife. A reverse situation would not be good for it or him.

As a victim of stalking myself (for three years and i'm not sure he actually stopped or just pausing and waiting) i demand better laws to protect victims! I have heard of too many cases with police being negligend and giving the stalker the adress of the victim by accident. Stalking should be punished severly, it inflicts so much fear and stalkers are a serious danger to anyone they encounter.

I used to date a guy that took 6 years to get him to leave me alone, I whole heartedly agree with your comment. Stalking is a huge problem here in Japan unfortunately. I’ve been stalked twice since I moved here 7 years ago. And many of my friends - Japanese and foreign - have stories of being stalked.
I've been stalked by a crazy ex since 1987. I'm in a foreign country now, but am still afraid he'll find me. It is so scary to be fixated on by a lunatic. There is nothing you can do but hide and hope.
Have you been direct with him? Be direct with him in how you feel about him. Tell him why. If he feels he is entitled to you though rather than that, then make yourself less appealing so he loses interest while at the same time, have a backbone at him. If he tries to me more confrontational, it will be more obvious and you can get rid of him. Be driven and take control of your own life. Don’t let whoever this maniac is control your life.

She is letting herself be at the mercy of everyone else. That man despite being separated, has some control of her life with this. This could be indicative of how she had been with her family as well. There is a whole picture missing here. Especially when she expressed some issues that are common among worsening mental health breakdown situations like what went on with this guy.
my aunt who lived in south korea most of her life was stalked 3 years by this guy who they didn't wanna arrest because they had "no proof", but it wasn't that, just like the reply above me says, they don't take women seriously at all in east asia, not anywhere, but it's something else over there to the point where it's so dangerous even going there in the first place as a female.

This story is very personal to me. I once dated a man who, when I left him, threatened to make my life miserable - and did. I had to open a case against him, almost lost my job after being suspended for a month due to his actions and suffered immense mental torture. Until you've been in a situation where someone is intent on making your life a living hell, you'll never understand how debilitating it can be. RIP Riye Mioshi. They charge him for stalking and sending threatening emails, he gets out and does it again and the cops say they can't do anything? Like how did they charge him and put him in jail the first time and there not able to do it again, if anything that should be considered a breach of his probation when he got out and started doing it again.

I got sick of my stalker. So I retaliated by proving I was the one with the power. He once waited me at the gym. But I was already waiting for HIM. He never saw me but I watched him for about 30 mins in his car. He eventually got tired of waiting for me to appear and went in. I went in after and took his gym gear off the machine when he went for more water. I rubbed his shirt and towel in mud outside and tossed it over his car. The stalking stopped
I was stalked as well and I got so fed up ,one day I saw him went right up to him and told him ,the next time when he least expect it ill kill him it doesn't matter what time of day it was and I really meant it and I guess the look in my eyes was psychotic as he never contacted me again.
I don't believe he was mad. He was an evil calculating selfish person. If he could not have her, no one would. Plus he took his life because his goal had been met. He never thought of his life moving forward after murdering this young woman.

Ideally, he should have seeked mental help and learnt to let go of his obsession (even though he was clearly either a narcissist or a sociopath and those disorders are very difficult to treat).

What a terrifying and sad story... Imagine staying violently obsessed with someone for that long when all they did was break up with you. And it's not even like she wasn't careful or aware of her situation, even her husband knew about it and feared this could happen, and eventually it did, like an unstoppable force. This is awful.

Recently a woman that I had talked to on a dating app e-mailed me and followed me on IG out of nowhere, making up an absurd reason for how she had found me online when really she googled stuff until she found me (she didn't have my full name so imagine the kind of research she had to do...). That really bothered me, blocked her without a word.
I feel sorry that that man was stupid enough to obsess over that bitch for 6 years even when she did that favor of leaving him and ensuring her fake life with another guy. I really think they should start teaching this stuff to teenagers in high school, both girls and boys to teach them what a healthy relationship is about and also red flags and danger signals to watch out for in relationships because I swear these types of people seem to work from the same hymm book. All the emotional abuse, making you feel like you can't manage without them, isolating you from family and friends. Gaslighting you so often that even if you know about that they do it so often that you don't know whether your coming or going. Belittling you, critising you, always wanting everything in the relationship to be only their way and Never taking your opinion or wants and needs into consideration. If young women and young men knew what to look out for, so many of them wouldn't fall into these sorts of unhealthy and damaging relationships

The most frightening thing is that it falls to the victim to be ever vigilant. As a friend of mine once said, "To save their life the victim of an abusive domestic partner, a stalker, or an abusive ex must give up their entire life, cutting all threads, because it just takes Aunty A who never believed that charming person was abusive and so blithely hands over contact details." This in the context of escaping stalkers before the internet wherein an entire new set of tools exist to find someone as demonstrated by Hideto's use of data-mining type questions. Sadly, protecting possible abuse victims generally goes into the too hard/too expensive basket. After all not all abusers/stalkers kill... :(
As a victim of stalking myself, this was seriously unjust and wrong. The victim did pretty much everything right and still wound up dead. Unbelievable. Stalkers are no joke, at all, and I cant believe that people can be this incompetent 'protecting' someone.
I’ve been stalked by an obsessive ex once. It was scary and stressful. Took an emotional toll. I even move four hours away & changed jobs and phone number etc. Was a really low point & I had depression for a few years. He even got thrown into jail for a short while for breaking his restraining order, but that didn’t stop him. I’m glad I survived my ex. Life is good again. I’m glad my ending is not as dire as this young woman, unfortunately I find it hard to trust ppl now.
Once you said he took his life & she was dead I instantly was disgusted by the fact that he felt that he had to take her life because in his mind he was thinking if he wasn’t going to live then neither should she. You can’t get much more selfish than that. I bet he thought that in some sick twisted form of fate that they would be together in death & the afterlife. I feel so sorry for the family & others who have lost their lives this way. It happened to an old friend of mine where her dad killed her mom then took his own life also. Just awful…

As someone who works in a company that's contracted by the government, the government officials, the employees acting for them, and that one random detective should *absolutely* be held accountable, if not in the court of law then at least in the court of public opinion. Fun fact, at least in my state, they have enough horror stories to use in training to emphasize why you ABSOLUTELY DO NOT give out others info without being able to verify that they're allowed to see it. Maybe your cause is just and we're a bureaucratic obstacle to you getting the info you need. Or. Maybe you're a stalker, an abusive spouse, a spiteful neighbor, or an identity-stealing stranger and we're the one line of defense between you and the info that could let you really hurt your victim. The people involved, in both the private and public sector, really dropped the ball here and an innocent woman who had done everything right to protect herself still paid with her life. I am so angry about this.
RIP Rie. When a clear death threat has been made, the police surveillance system should remain in place, unless the party being protected requests it's removal.
Also apparently the Japanese police punished the victim by having to pay extra for security cameras and patrols than the suspect himself, which only got 1 year probation.
He was the one who decided when to end things in his life. He quit jobs frequently, he found himself easily bored, he was the one in control of when things ended. But, when his girlfriend was the one to end their relationship, he couldn’t handle it. The way he gathered information about her over the years is chilling. It mostly boiled down to luck and lackadaisical identity protection. How he ended up with her address and new last name shows just how careless people were with the protection of her information. This could’ve been prevented in myriad ways, but, sadly, no one other than she and her husband were taking Hideto and his threats seriously. It’s also unfortunate that his mental health struggles were never adequately addressed. It does make you wonder if things might’ve ended differently if he’d gotten help with his depression and suicidal behavior. But, I doubt he would’ve participated in any treatment plan. This is the first time I’ve heard of Hideto, so I cannot say much of anything about him or the situation with any certainty. Regardless, the whole thing is tragic. Especially the fact that her husband lost his wife in the way that he did.
I feel like if someone threatens your life to this degree, it should be legal for you to end that person or put them in jail for a longer period of time like 10 years.
Don't forget to add to the mix he basically was a spoiled brat from childhood through adulthood his parents gave him whatever whenever he wanted it and didn't understand the word no.
This isn't related to this specific case but can I just say that I love the way you tell these stories. You never try to dramatise or over-sensationalise anything. Instead, you always make sure to pay your respects to the victim(s) and give us a good picture of what they were like. I love that because it reminds us that these things aren't some crazy stories for our entertainment, they're tragedies that happened to real people. Thank you.

If you want someone who also takes cases seriously I suggest Kendall Rae. She also often works with missing persons and with the family of victims. She also holds donations for lots of companies that protect women and children from situations like this.
Remember everyone, you are not responsible for anyone else's life. You can try to help, but if you are being abused or suffering as a result of their behavior you have every right to leave. Manipulation by threatening self harm is a form of abuse that is very real.

Stalking is so freaking scary. Ive experienced it myself, although only cyberstalking. But the grip the stalker gets on the victim is frightening. My stalker spread nasty rumours about me, contacted my friends and tried to make them not be friends with me anymore, sending threatening messages to me everywhere, made false accounts to keep track of my movements online, what I was doing, what games I was playing, who I was talking to, what servers im in. I started becoming really paranoid and scared, I was afraid he was going to show up irl because he had my full name (we used to be friends) and since he had my full name he could also find my adresse, I was scared he was going to hurt me or my family, I was scared looking out the window in case he stood there watching me, I was scared everytime it knocked on the door cuz I imagined it was him with a gun or knife. I felt so choked by him, that I became suicidal, because it felt like the only way to escape him was to die. I was horrible scared and felt alone and like I was a prisoner. Police needs to take stalking more seriously, and this was only on the internet so I couldnt really report it either. Luckily he stopped after like abit over 1 year. Ive done my best to remove all traces of me on the internet, my old facebook account, my full real name and my adresse and phone number, but its probably not all gone. This case reawakened me to never give out my full name to anyone on the internet again.
Confidentiality is a huge problem in Australia. For example in hospitals, in the ER, patient’s names get called out-loud, the nurse comes to you and asks you questions about your condition right in front of everyone while you’re waiting to to seen. They need a ticket system and a private room where all this can be done. The doctor should only be calling out a number when she’s ready to see the next patient. It’s the same thing at the pharmacy.
I really can't even understand stalkers...3 years of not talking and staying so focused on them? And boy is it infuriating that he was able to get her name and address from an oversight. So terrible. And don't get me started on how stupid restraining orders are. They will never stop a person who needs a restraining order.
I do understand them. Three years can be nothing, when you've had no one else in your life. You can cling to a delusion for much, much longer. Letting go of the past isn't easy, especially when a person has no future to look forward to.
They need to be able to lock an offender up at earlier intervals in the process. There will always be leaks of information. Less stalker activity needs to carry heavier penalties for the stalker, to let the victims try to get distance from the stalker online sooner.

I can’t even fathom what’s going inside a stalkers mind. To mercilessly stalk someone for 6 full years?! Don’t these people ever think to themselves, “What am I doing?? What is wrong with me??” As much as I love crime stories, watching too many at one time makes me really upset. Seeing all these beautiful lives cut short because of selfish people.
I know you can't save everyone but I'm so tired of reading about people coming to the authorities and begging them for help because they are afraid for their lives and they just say they "can't do anything." @@Alejojojo6 The purpose of police is law enforcement. It is not protection. I will never ever forget the injustice of Castle Rock v Gonzalez. In the United States, a woman with a restraining order against her husband frantically called police dozens of times over the course of one night because he had kidnapped their children. The police dismissed her over and over. The husband showed up at the police station and shot himself in the parking lot. Their children were dead in the back seat. She filed suit against the city, police force and the officers involved, and it was dismissed by the Supreme Court. The police were found to not be responsible because their job is to enforce laws and enforcing a restraining order is not mandatory in Colorado (making restraining orders effectively pointless...). This case codified that the police's duty is not and has never been to protect people. Period. Edit: I just looked it up and I had midremembered that he actually died in a shoot out with police. He had already killed the three girls.
Rie failed herself too by telling him “just be happy” and failing to be more direct with him earlier on. Though I do hold her death accountable to the killer as he should have moved on to a better woman that isn’t trash like her. He screwed up more than anyone else here. Also yes. The law enforcement were completely in the wrong in the handling with the information and I have no idea how they missed it.

This story is insane…she did everything right!! I had a similar story, but even without moving house or changed anything like her..I only had 1 encounter after 5 years but it wasn’t planned. I know that my ex might be stalking on social media, but idk..This story is very uncomfortable to listen, poor woman…she was so strong to get out and change everything…

It makes me so appreciative that when my ex became my stalker I was living in a different country. I had to go through so much effort to hide my identity online but it was worth escaping him.

This is so distressing. I saw an entire documentary about stalking in Japan. It is quite an epidemic. This poor couple did everything they could and the system failed them. Why wasn't he prosecuted for violating his parole when he initially contacted her? I wonder if it's legal in the US and UK for a private detective to find people and then give out their address? It seems like the PI in this case shouldve looked up his name and seen the the legal case before he gave her info out! And that bit shouldn't be legal to give out anyone's info!

As someone who is being stalked by a woman who will probably never leave me alone, these stories strike me with such fear. People don't take stalking seriously, especially if you're a man being harassed by a small woman

I’ve had my ex-fiancé stalk me in Japan for about a year and a half (I broke up with him since he was physically and emotionally abusive), and the police did squat. They REALLY need to enforce newer stalking legislation because as things stand now, the enforcement sucks.

Adrian said under another similar comment that he doesn’t want to encourage or praise suicide/suicidal thoughts. He wished the stalker would’ve been treated after his first suicide attempt and then cured so that no one had died. However, the reality of Japan (and South Korea btw) regarding mental health is = they don’t want to care. They are in denial and see taking care of it as a “weakness” except there are the ones being weak no treating it and letting their people die, being abused, enslaved, and basically anything besides being a happy and respected citizen/human being. Tragic.
@@solarose7820 as someone living in South Korea I can confirm this to be true, mental health here is not a thing, there are barely any mental health providers and no one goes to mental health even if they truly need it because they think going to mental health is "admiting to society they are crazy, mentally inferior, etc", very sad because I needed a psychologist and could never find one in this country due to how stigmatized mental health is here

I used to live in Yokosuka for a few years. This was a couple years after this tragedy, but I used to visit Zushi all the time since it was so close and never once did I hear about this frankly terrifying story. Thank you so much for covering this; may Rie rest in peace ♡
What a terrible way to live: thinking you’re safe and away from all of that stress and then in random bursts, you get threats and have to live in fear all over again
So frustrating that simple errors can cost someone their lives. Especially when they are trying to follow the letter of the law. It's already harrowing enough to try and prove stalking and be taken seriously. It's sad to think of a stranger finding the murder scene as a small mercy to her husband.
I am so obsessed with This Channel that I rewatch cases all the time and sometimes I'm so excited I forget to comment or anything. Love your channel man. Thank you so much for telling her story! This happened around the time we were dealing with a stalker. I was so worried about going to the Japanese police. They talked to the stalker told him to stop telling us not to worry as he was mentally challenged. 2 years later when he started standing outside our apartment building police discovered they talked to the wrong man. We moved away the next school year but it was a very scary time. Hear about this story and other Japanese mishaps made it worse.
Advice to me: Walk around with a frown, dress like a bag lady, always take a different way home. But at 62 I don't think I have anything to worry about.
i pretty much DO all that! At 69, I'm not getting stalked, but guys try to chat me up a LOT! The only thing I have is a good attitude and good posture.
It's not about how you dress or what your facial expression is or what you look like. The victim isn't the one to blame here. I realize that's not what you're trying to say but stalking or any other crime of this nature has zero to do with the way a person looks or dresses. That's a seriously bad stereotype that should never be put out there. The person who commits the crime looks for an opportunity, not a short skirt.
This one is incredibly sad. She did everything right, and due to the negligence of others, she lost her life. I'm glad they made changes to the law. At the very least, she didn't die in vain. Her sacrifice will help protect other people being stalked in Japan.

This is absolutely horrific... I don't even have words for how terrible the negligence involving Rei's case even was. That poor woman and her family, it was a loss that could have been avoided.
Cases like this get me emotional. That could have been me. I was stalked for 3 years by an ex coworker. I went to the police in my city and they didn't care. When I requested a protection order they denied me and I started sobbing they asked in an irritated tone "why are you crying?" Because I was fucking terrified and the people who are supposed to protect me didn't give a single shit. I had to move cities, jobs, phone numbers, addresses, Facebook before just not partaking in any social media for a solid year or two. I made a snap chat and within 12 hours he found it and posted it on a sexting site with my old address (he looked on our system and found it at work before he was fired). Thank God I didn't live there anymore. The more I rejected him and defended my boundaries the more crazy he got. Not to mention he was married with 3 kids and another on the way. His wife even reached out and asked if he was cheating with me. I told her that he was stalking me and I had 0 interest in him. She got emotional and said she is trying to leave him but he won't let her work and it is hard with the kids and that he very abusive. I did my best to warn her like "if he is going to this extent and threatening me because I'm not interested in him and I'm just a work mate, then imagine what he is capable of doing to someone who leaves him that he thought would never leave. He admitted he can't handle rejection. That's scary. Go to a women's shelter." She didn't take me seriously insistjnh he would never kill her. I worry so much about her and I hope she and the kids are safe distance away from that waste of space. Im lucky he started stalking someone else because it was escalating to the point where he'd show up to my different jobs pretending to be a customer even though he lived in a completely different city. This story could have been me.
Fun fact; if you're in America. The supreme court has explicitly stated; that the police are not there to protect and serve. That case was brought to them because a man sued the NYPD for standing and watching him be repeatedly stabbed in another train car. It's just you, you need to protect yourself. Get and carry weapons.
As sad as the cases in these videos are, the form they are told is so fluid that I always watch them ASAP. The chronological order, and explaining important details as they come up, make it much easier to follow. While some true crime channels edit creatively, this form of simple and straightforward telling is a lot more satisfying to me. Thank you again for posting such quality content ❤

I can only imagine the sheer terror she experienced when that lunatic appeared in her house. She thought she had escaped him and she felt safe moving on with her life. But she ended up dying in fear while her murderer died feeling victorious. There is no justice whatsoever. The husband should have been compensated far more for the government's negligence.
This is terrifying. My heart hurts for her and her family. I had a stalker. Extremely controlling and sick minded. I had to get a restraining order on him but I still wonder and I’m still careful to show where I really live on social media. I believe it’s an actual sickness or a personality glitch type thing. I had a stalker for several years, many years ago. I don't have to imagine the fear this poor, young woman had to live with. That very same fear changed who I was forever, even if no physical harm ever came to me. My stalker was just some random acquaintance who decided to latch on to me, for reasons I will never figure out. The ex is much more dangerous. But the thing is - you don't KNOW if your stalker is going to become violent or not, so the fear is the same. It's been 15 years since it stopped, and I still have vivid nightmares sometimes. But I'm alive. I'm one of the lucky ones. I'm heartbroken every time I hear stories about people who weren't as lucky as I was. Imagine the absolute nightmare her husband had to go through... I hope he will be able to heal enough to build a good life for himself, without this wonderful woman by his side.

Exactly. I had to do exactly this ten years ago. I moved, switched jobs, got new numbers, emails, a different car and plates, and changed my name. I deleted and had to get deleted (meaning: had to contact old forums or websites) anything about me online, and had to instruct friends and family to never give any of my information to anyone. The police did nothing, since nothing physical had happened yet. It is completely sickening.
The stalker overdosed around 2015, so I feel fine talking about it now.
I think the laws need to be changed. The stalker goes to a mental asylum or jail based on the facts of the case. That way, the stalker is punished instead.

To me it would make no difference, the only thing that kept him clinging to life is the thought of ending hers. Human rights groups would argue that keeping him locked up without a serious crime is inhumane. So many things would go right for him to achieve this disaster.
The Law absolutely failed her. Giving out her information, only locking him up for a year, uninstalling the cameras and stopping the patrols. Really? Just horrible.

I think the oversight in details during the court proceedings were definitely a big slip up, but I wouldn't put much blame on the police dept. The fact they were willing to even put up CCTV cameras and extra patrol for several months, just for one family, is pretty good. I have a hard time believing police in the US would even do half as much for the same thing.

The one thing that frustrates me the most about these stalking cases is how much power the stalkers have over their victims, they're practically invincible until they seriously hurt or kill the person they're tormenting. If those cameras were still there she might've been able to spot him lurking around and allowed her to react accordingly. I can understand removing the patrols, but uninstalling the cameras just seems so unnecessary, especially when the person who needs them is at risk.

It's like those prestige boarding schools where everything and anything is perfect because it's the culture and everyone is happy that way. Humans are "wild" and are "tamed" by strict restrictions. So if there's no visible restrictions, I suspect that the justice system is mainly about sweeping things under the carpet. Many victims suffer in silence
as someone who watches a lot of true crime, this is one of the saddest cases I think I've ever heard. she tried so hard, underwent so many preventative measures, and was on a path of happiness...yet she was left unprotected by lazy and neglectful agencies and ultimately, murdered. honestly so heartbreaking.

Japan’s judicial system is awful. Because the violent crime rate is relatively lower than other developed nations, they let their guard down and the police have become complacent. When an actual violent crime occurs criminals are let off extremely easily (if the cases are even properly investigated at all).

Lol. That thing did nothing. It basically made simplistic takes on his life with an incomplete mindset on how to live one’s life. Then said that he should feel better now due to it and his depression is his fault. One of those people who say “just be happy”. It was toxic. Though, that doesn’t mean that he should have killed it. He should have moved on and gotten some real help and get with someone better. Then, he keeps it quiet and away from it since if it figures out he is doing well, then it might try to kill him and possibly his wife. A reverse situation would not be good for it or him.

As a victim of stalking myself (for three years and i'm not sure he actually stopped or just pausing and waiting) i demand better laws to protect victims! I have heard of too many cases with police being negligend and giving the stalker the adress of the victim by accident. Stalking should be punished severly, it inflicts so much fear and stalkers are a serious danger to anyone they encounter.

Have you been direct with him? Be direct with him in how you feel about him. Tell him why. If he feels he is entitled to you though rather than that, then make yourself less appealing so he loses interest while at the same time, have a backbone at him. She doesn't deserve what happened to her and condolences to her and her family, but I'm not going to pretend that this lady was some kind of saint. Especially when she expressed some issues that are common among worsening mental health breakdown situations like what went on with this guy.

This story is very personal to me. I once dated a man who, when I left him, threatened to make my life miserable - and did. I had to open a case against him, almost lost my job after being suspended for a month due to his actions and suffered immense mental torture. Until you've been in a situation where someone is intent on making your life a living hell, you'll never understand how debilitating it can be. RIP Riye Mioshi. You didn't deserve what happened to you 😢

I got sick of my stalker. So I retaliated by proving I was the one with the power. He once waited me at the gym. But I was already waiting for HIM. He never saw me but I watched him for about 30 mins in his car. He eventually got tired of waiting for me to appear and went in. I went in after and took his gym gear off the machine when he went for more water. I rubbed his shirt and towel in mud outside and tossed it over his car.

Ideally, he should have seeked mental help and learnt to let go of his obsession (even though he was clearly either a narcissist or a sociopath and those disorders are very difficult to treat).

What a terrifying and sad story... Imagine staying violently obsessed with someone for that long when all they did was break up with you. And it's not even like she wasn't careful or aware of her situation, even her husband knew about it and feared this could happen, and eventually it did, like an unstoppable force. This is awful.

I really think they should start teaching this stuff to teenagers in high school, both girls and boys to teach them what a healthy relationship is about and also red flags and danger signals to watch out for in relationships because I swear these types of people seem to work from the same hymm book. All the emotional abuse, making you feel like you can't manage without them, isolating you from family and friends. Gaslighting you so often that even if you know about that they do it so often that you don't know whether your coming or going. Belittling you, critising you, always wanting everything in the relationship to be only their way and Never taking your opinion or wants and needs into consideration. The most frightening thing is that it falls to the victim to be ever vigilant. As a friend of mine once said, "To save their life the victim of an abusive domestic partner, a stalker, or an abusive ex must give up their entire life, cutting all threads, because it just takes Aunty A who never believed that charming person was abusive and so blithely hands over contact details." This in the context of escaping stalkers before the internet wherein an entire new set of tools exist to find someone as demonstrated by Hideto's use of data-mining type questions.
Sadly, protecting possible abuse victims generally goes into the too hard/too expensive basket. After all not all abusers/stalkers kill... :(
As a victim of stalking myself, this was seriously unjust and wrong. The victim did pretty much everything right and still wound up dead. Unbelievable. Stalkers are no joke, at all, and I cant believe that people can be this incompetent 'protecting' someone.
I’ve been stalked by an obsessive ex once. It was scary and stressful. Took an emotional toll. I even move four hours away & changed jobs and phone number etc. Was a really low point & I had depression for a few years. He even got thrown into jail for a short while for breaking his restraining order, but that didn’t stop him. I’m glad I survived my ex. Life is good again. I’m glad my ending is not as dire as this young woman, unfortunately I find it hard to trust ppl now.

As someone who works in a company that's contracted by the government, the government officials, the employees acting for them, and that one random detective should *absolutely* be held accountable, if not in the court of law then at least in the court of public opinion.
Fun fact, at least in my state, they have enough horror stories to use in training to emphasize why you ABSOLUTELY DO NOT give out others info without being able to verify that they're allowed to see it. Maybe your cause is just and we're a bureaucratic obstacle to you getting the info you need.

Maybe you're a stalker, an abusive spouse, a spiteful neighbor, or an identity-stealing stranger and we're the one line of defense between you and the info that could let you really hurt your victim.
The people involved, in both the private and public sector, really dropped the ball here and an innocent woman who had done everything right to protect herself still paid with her life.

Also apparently the Japanese police punished the victim by having to pay extra for security cameras and patrols than the suspect himself, which only got 1 year probation.

He was the one who decided when to end things in his life. He quit jobs frequently, he found himself easily bored, he was the one in control of when things ended. But, when his girlfriend was the one to end their relationship, he couldn’t handle it. The way he gathered information about her over the years is chilling. It mostly boiled down to luck and lackadaisical identity protection. How he ended up with her address and new last name shows just how careless people were with the protection of her information. This could’ve been prevented in myriad ways, but, sadly, no one other than she and her husband were taking Hideto and his threats seriously. It’s also unfortunate that his mental health struggles were never adequately addressed. It does make you wonder if things might’ve ended differently if he’d gotten help with his depression and suicidal behavior. But, I doubt he would’ve participated in any treatment plan. This is the first time I’ve heard of Hideto, so I cannot say much of anything about him or the situation with any certainty. Regardless, the whole thing is tragic. Especially the fact that her husband lost his wife in the way that he did.
I feel like if someone threatens your life to this degree, it should be legal for you to end that person or put them in jail for a longer period of time like 10 years.
Don't forget to add to the mix he basically was a spoiled brat from childhood through adulthood his parents gave him whatever whenever he wanted it and didn't understand the word no.

If you want someone who also takes cases seriously I suggest Kendall Rae. She also often works with missing persons and with the family of victims. She also holds donations for lots of companies that protect women and children from situations like this.
Remember everyone, you are not responsible for anyone else's life. You can try to help, but if you are being abused or suffering as a result of their behavior you have every right to leave. Manipulation by threatening self harm is a form of abuse that is very real.

Stalking is so freaking scary. Ive experienced it myself, although only cyberstalking. But the grip the stalker gets on the victim is frightening. My stalker spread nasty rumours about me, contacted my friends and tried to make them not be friends with me anymore, sending threatening messages to me everywhere, made false accounts to keep track of my movements online, what I was doing, what games I was playing, who I was talking to, what servers im in. I started becoming really paranoid and scared, I was afraid he was going to show up irl because he had my full name (we used to be friends) and since he had my full name he could also find my adresse, I was scared he was going to hurt me or my family, I was scared looking out the window in case he stood there watching me, I was scared everytime it knocked on the door cuz I imagined it was him with a gun or knife. I felt so choked by him, that I became suicidal, because it felt like the only way to escape him was to die. I was horrible scared and felt alone and like I was a prisoner. Police needs to take stalking more seriously, and this was only on the internet so I couldnt really report it either. Luckily he stopped after like abit over 1 year. Ive done my best to remove all traces of me on the internet, my old facebook account, my full real name and my adresse and phone number, but its probably not all gone. This case reawakened me to never give out my full name to anyone on the internet again.
Confidentiality is a huge problem in Australia. For example in hospitals, in the ER, patient’s names get called out-loud, the nurse comes to you and asks you questions about your condition right in front of everyone while you’re waiting to to seen.
They need a ticket system and a private room where all this can be done. The doctor should only be calling out a number when she’s ready to see the next patient. It’s the same thing at the pharmacy.
I really can't even understand stalkers...3 years of not talking and staying so focused on them? And boy is it infuriating that he was able to get her name and address from an oversight. So terrible. And don't get me started on how stupid restraining orders are. They will never stop a person who needs a restraining order.

They need to be able to lock an offender up at earlier intervals in the process. There will always be leaks of information. Less stalker activity needs to carry heavier penalties for the stalker, to let the victims try to get distance from the stalker online sooner.

I can’t even fathom what’s going inside a stalkers mind. To mercilessly stalk someone for 6 full years?! Don’t these people ever think to themselves, “What am I doing?? @@Alejojojo6 The purpose of police is law enforcement. It is not protection. I will never ever forget the injustice of Castle Rock v Gonzalez. In the United States, a woman with a restraining order against her husband frantically called police dozens of times over the course of one night because he had kidnapped their children. The police dismissed her over and over. The husband showed up at the police station and shot himself in the parking lot. Their children were dead in the back seat. She filed suit against the city, police force and the officers involved, and it was dismissed by the Supreme Court. The police were found to not be responsible because their job is to enforce laws and enforcing a restraining order is not mandatory in Colorado (making restraining orders effectively pointless...). This case codified that the police's duty is not and has never been to protect people. Period.
Edit: I just looked it up and I had midremembered that he actually died in a shoot out with police. He had already killed the three girls.

Though I do hold her death accountable to the killer as he should have moved on to a better woman that isn’t trash like her. He screwed up more than anyone else here. Also yes. The law enforcement were completely in the wrong in the handling with the information and I have no idea how they missed it.

This is so distressing. I saw an entire documentary about stalking in Japan. It is quite an epidemic. This poor couple did everything they could and the system failed them. Why wasn't he prosecuted for violating his parole when he initially contacted her? I wonder if it's legal in the US and UK for a private detective to find people and then give out their address? It seems like the PI in this case shouldve looked up his name and seen the the legal case before he gave her info out! And that bit shouldn't be legal to give out anyone's info!

I’ve had my ex-fiancé stalk me in Japan for about a year and a half (I broke up with him since he was physically and emotionally abusive), and the police did squat. They REALLY need to enforce newer stalking legislation because as things stand now, the enforcement sucks.
So sad that, not just this case, but many cases, the authorities failed to protect this woman from a clear and obvious threat.

Adrian said under another similar comment that he doesn’t want to encourage or praise suicide/suicidal thoughts. He wished the stalker would’ve been treated after his first suicide attempt and then cured so that no one had died. However, the reality of Japan (and South Korea btw) regarding mental health is = they don’t want to care. They are in denial and see taking care of it as a “weakness” except there are the ones being weak no treating it and letting their people die, being abused, enslaved, and basically anything besides being a happy and respected citizen/human being. Tragic.
@@solarose7820 as someone living in South Korea I can confirm this to be true, mental health here is not a thing, there are barely any mental health providers and no one goes to mental health even if they truly need it because they think going to mental health is "admiting to society they are crazy, mentally inferior, etc", very sad because I needed a psychologist and could never find one in this country due to how stigmatized mental health is here

What a terrible way to live: thinking you’re safe and away from all of that stress and then in random bursts, you get threats and have to live in fear all over again
I was stalked once and it was pretty upsetting. I had to literally ghost the entire world for a several years and change all my contact info.
So frustrating that simple errors can cost someone their lives. Especially when they are trying to follow the letter of the law. It's already harrowing enough to try and prove stalking and be taken seriously. It's sad to think of a stranger finding the murder scene as a small mercy to her husband.

This happened around the time we were dealing with a stalker. I was so worried about going to the Japanese police. They talked to the stalker told him to stop telling us not to worry as he was mentally challenged. 2 years later when he started standing outside our apartment building police discovered they talked to the wrong man. We moved away the next school year but it was a very scary time. Hear about this story and other Japanese mishaps made it worse.
I can't believe that the stalker got personal information about her from his own stalking restriction. Just wow.
Advice to me: Walk around with a frown, dress like a bag lady, always take a different way home. But at 62 I don't think I have anything to worry about.
i pretty much DO all that! At 69, I'm not getting stalked, but guys try to chat me up a LOT! The only thing I have is a good attitude and good posture.

It's not about how you dress or what your facial expression is or what you look like. The victim isn't the one to blame here. I realize that's not what you're trying to say but stalking or any other crime of this nature has zero to do with the way a person looks or dresses. That's a seriously bad stereotype that should never be put out there. The person who commits the crime looks for an opportunity, not a short skirt.
That's not how it works. It doesn't matter what you look like, or how you dress, any woman can be a potential target.
This one is incredibly sad. She did everything right, and due to the negligence of others, she lost her life. I'm glad they made changes to the law. At the very least, she didn't die in vain. Her sacrifice will help protect other people being stalked in Japan.

True. I was actually rooting for it to be a case where the person being stalked survives. But then again, stalkers are often invincible and will stop at nothing. Tbh, I have arrived at the conclusion that even if you play your cards right, death is often unavoidable. It's best to live whatever life you have in the best way possible and I think Rie Hideto lived her short life to the fullest.

This is absolutely horrific... I don't even have words for how terrible the negligence involving Rei's case even was. That poor woman and her family, it was a loss that could have been avoided.
One of my big tears is my ex trying to talk to me again. I start to panic whenever he manages to send me a message still.
Cases like this get me emotional. That could have been me. I was stalked for 3 years by an ex coworker. I went to the police in my city and they didn't care. When I requested a protection order they denied me and I started sobbing they asked in an irritated tone "why are you crying?" Because I was fucking terrified and the people who are supposed to protect me didn't give a single shit. I had to move cities, jobs, phone numbers, addresses, Facebook before just not partaking in any social media for a solid year or two. I made a snap chat and within 12 hours he found it and posted it on a sexting site with my old address (he looked on our system and found it at work before he was fired). Thank God I didn't live there anymore. The more I rejected him and defended my boundaries the more crazy he got. Not to mention he was married with 3 kids and another on the way. His wife even reached out and asked if he was cheating with me. I told her that he was stalking me and I had 0 interest in him. She got emotional and said she is trying to leave him but he won't let her work and it is hard with the kids and that he very abusive. I did my best to warn her like "if he is going to this extent and threatening me because I'm not interested in him and I'm just a work mate, then imagine what he is capable of doing to someone who leaves him that he thought would never leave. He admitted he can't handle rejection. That's scary. Go to a women's shelter." She didn't take me seriously insistjnh he would never kill her. I worry so much about her and I hope she and the kids are safe distance away from that waste of space. Im lucky he started stalking someone else because it was escalating to the point where he'd show up to my different jobs pretending to be a customer even though he lived in a completely different city. This story could have been me.

Fun fact; if you're in America. The supreme court has explicitly stated; that the police are not there to protect and serve. That case was brought to them because a man sued the NYPD for standing and watching him be repeatedly stabbed in another train car.

As sad as the cases in these videos are, the form they are told is so fluid that I always watch them ASAP. The chronological order, and explaining important details as they come up, make it much easier to follow. While some true crime channels edit creatively, this form of simple and straightforward telling is a lot more satisfying to me. Thank you again for posting such quality content ❤
Thank you for making videos of crimes in Japan. I moved to Canada years ago from Japan, and some of the crimes that had happened prior to & around the time of my immigration, I still remember.

I can only imagine the sheer terror she experienced when that lunatic appeared in her house. She thought she had escaped him and she felt safe moving on with her life. But she ended up dying in fear while her murderer died feeling victorious. There is no justice whatsoever. The husband should have been compensated far more for the government's negligence.
This is terrifying. My heart hurts for her and her family. I had a stalker. Extremely controlling and sick minded. I had to get a restraining order on him but I still wonder and I’m still careful to show where I really live on social media. I believe it’s an actual sickness or a personality glitch type thing.

I had a stalker for several years, many years ago. I don't have to imagine the fear this poor, young woman had to live with. That very same fear changed who I was forever, even if no physical harm ever came to me. My stalker was just some random acquaintance who decided to latch on to me, for reasons I will never figure out. The ex is much more dangerous. But the thing is - you don't KNOW if your stalker is going to become violent or not, so the fear is the same. It's been 15 years since it stopped, and I still have vivid nightmares sometimes. But I'm alive. I'm one of the lucky ones. I'm heartbroken every time I hear stories about people who weren't as lucky as I was. Imagine the absolute nightmare her husband had to go through... I hope he will be able to heal enough to build a good life for himself, without this wonderful woman by his side.

Literally every point in the system failed her. Only the group that was created to actually help these women helped her. I’m so sorry for her, her husband and her family.

Mental illness is bizarre and can be so strong. To end the life of someone you fully believe is the love of your life or a soulmate is insane. Like, if you truly loved someone wouldn't you rather the live a long happy life instead of dead and being terrified of you when they died.
