  • A very belated “Happy Mother’s Day” to all you moms and motherly figures out there.This is my own ‘better late than never’ mother’s day video to show off my 1978 Gibson “The Paul”: A gift I received from my own Mom on my 17th birthday many many many many (etc, etc, etc) moons ago. Now installed are a set of Brandonwound TTop clones.
    The opening sequence of “Adderall Lungs” was an improvisational 2:00 AM recording. Kris (11th Fret) is the sole composer of this arrangement, performing all parts. Equipment used was a Boss Katana Air (v1), 1978 Gibson “The Paul”, Charvel Pro-Mod San Dimas Style 1 HH FR Trans Green Burst, Ibanez TMB300 Bass, Roland TD-17KV-SV Ⅴ-Drums, Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 (2nd Gen), & Logic Pro X.

    The only guitar i have from my early years of playing is an epiphone pr-200 acoustic that my dad and i got when i was 14 at a sam ash in new jersey. That was the only piece of music equipment that survived a roll over accident when i was 18. After being unconscious for up to 3 hours at the bottom of a highway on ramp, i somehow got out and walked in a blackout to a gas station. When the guy working at the counter asked, I didnt know what happened, but thought i was very badly injured because my forehead was bleeding. The police when they went to the scene, found the guitar in the hardcase up in the wheel well. It is not a great playing guitar, but it has sentimental value. 30+ years later i made a new nut and saddle for it from a piece of leg bone from last years moose. Good memories are important. They can be recalled at any time without regard to the current situation for the cost of exactly nothing.

      Holy crap. What an amazing backstory. I’m… just kind of speechless. I will say that I’m really happy you came out of that ordeal okay. And doubly impressed that the guitar survived being in the wheel well. 🤯

    I love Brandonwound pickups. Got a set of 59's for my Tokai '59' LP and got the T-Tops for my, get ready, 78' Gibson LP Custom. Plan on getting their Pat Stickers for my yet to come SG. My 78' was $500 BTW in 89'. It is battlescarred, about the same amount of buckle rash. I've played it at every gig, save one because it was in the shop. Played a Gibson GoldTop 57' RI (90's) for that. And still was not comparable to the 78'.

      Oooh! That's amazing! I almost nabbed a 1978 Black Beauty a few weeks back that was player grade, but without any breaks. I loved it. Flattest frets in all existence. But it was a bit pricey. I almost traded in my 6yo son for it, but I still would've had to pay out of pocket for the difference. Just kidding, of course. I love the Duncan 1959's too. I find them to have some balanced character to them. They get dirty on demand, and can cool off as needed.

    Chris, LOVE your show and feel privileged to be one of your early followers. Can totally relate to your feelings for your "the Paul" because it's a similar story as my Ibanez lawsuit model. Laughed when you maybe unintentionally made a "back story" pun about real battle scars and use wear as compared to factory 'relics' being more like prewashed, preworn jeans. The real 'back story' of a guitar is what the back looks like today after years of playing. That means there will be some buckle rash and scratches from the rivets and buttons on our jeans, and maybe a coffee-table dent on the back or edge of the neck. If somebody else did that it's a bargaining point. If we did it, it's a memory and part of the guitar's soul tattoos.

    • @11thFret
      @11thFret  2 года назад

      Thanks Mark! Yeah, I have my opinions about relics. I used to theorize that relic guitars were factory seconds with lipstick put on them, which I didn't say in this video. I actually discussed relics with some of Fender's Master Builders last year, bringing my theory up to them. They quickly and strongly said that's not the case. They use only the best materials specifically intended for their relic process. They do not use any "oops" or other subpar parts.
      As for me, I will absolutely relic an instrument I screwed up on vs stripping again and refinishing. 🤣

    GREAT story, not only do I remember this guitar, I also owned this same guitar( except, I think it was the Gibson 'Firebrand' series, where the Gibson logo was firebranded into the headstock). Sadly, I traded it for another guitar back in 1985, the same year I got it, but that guitar is also gone!!! I like the gear I have now, but boy oh boy do I miss the gear I had back then!!! I'm sure you won't do this, but never get rid of it if you don't have to, because you will regret it my friend, Great video & playing, thanks for sharing, I just subbed to your channel, you ROCK!!! Be safe, Rock On & God Bless!!!

      I have certain guitars that sometimes don’t tickle my fancy, yet will never get rid of. This is/was one of them. Right now it’s checking off all my boxes. When the Duncan’s were still in it, I was falling out of love with its tones a bit. But the Brandonwounds helped a ton, and now I’m just clicking with it again.
      Thanks for the compliments and the sub. I wrote that intro (which admittedly doesn’t match the story …at all) fairly quickly. It wasn’t too intricate and somehow I pulled off, well, the beginning of the song in a pinch. 😂

    What an excellent birthday surprise! Sweet guitar. I love my ‘78 The Paul - still has the original T-Tops in it. I think the previous owner was a Punker who toured extensively with it - it would be fair to say it is somewhat “road worn” 😆

      Craigslist is easy. OfferUp is also a good spot. But the sleeper classifieds, at least in my area, is “Nextdoor” with their ‘For Sale & Free’ section. I’ve landed quite a bit of free gear in there, including drums.
