Top 5 Used Guitar Buys I Paid WAY Too Little For!!!
In a sea of people discussing new guitar purchases, I'm of the mindset that used gear can be almost every bit as good, if not better. Especially if the used gear can be had for way below its fair market value. This is just a handful of examples I have to share regarding some used gear buys.

Escaping the Annoyance: Finally Fixed the Gibson SG Pickup Angle Flaw

While there are some different iterations of the layout, one of the most popular is an SG loaded with a batwing pickguard. @11thFret 7 дней назад

      Truth be told, it’s not original (at least, I think). It’s kind of hard to explain, but it’s a riff this customer used to play a lot which he wrote. But, that was maybe 28 years ago when I was a teenager working at a small music shop. That riff always stuck with me, but it’s not mine and I can’t remember his name to give credit. That said, I did modify the riff from how I originally remember it being. It’s just not mine.

    I have installed these Pure Tone jacks in two of my guitars. Yep, nicely designed and quality construction. Downside is that they grip the plug so tight sometimes it is hard for me to pull them out... especially a 90 degree connector on my Tele. I do have one of the aftermarket jack cups on it. That 90 can be a bear to get out. I wonder about a little dielectric grease on the contacts or something... lots of spring tension and friction in the design.

It's not in my music library I usually draw from, nor is it a Final Cut Pro X library jingle. I also experimented with CapCut around this time, but I cannot seem to source it in there either. So sorry! I'll keep looking as I now need to know what happened and what music it was. However, I will say that I never use commercial music in my videos. I've considering one of these for a long time but I wasn't really sure about it because I couldn't try it. Then I bought a Warwick shortscale bass and all my guitar purchases had to be postponed xD I wonder how they compare with the Sire L3 p90 LP jr style guitars, I think they are very similar pricewise, the body is made from mahogany though. Thanks a lor for this demo :) and sorry if I made mistakes, English isn't my mother language.

    • @11thFret
      @11thFret Месяц назад

      I was very lucky to get my hands on one of these. Sadly, I've yet to try the Sire L3 P90. They've not reached out, and I'm flooded with enough guitars where I've zero motivation to seek one out at the moment. But I can say that of the 4 Slick guitars I currently own, their pickups are something very, very special to me. They all have just a little more push than vintage spec, but not overdoing it to get muddy. The Sire L3 P90 does have the traditional mahogany body for that kind of nod to Gibson and a nice, polished finish. Whereas the SL59 is a rustic looking ash body with a thin layer of automotive paint and no grain filler. Some players get pretty offended over the idea of a relic'd body, but I like it for the sole reason that it feels good to the touch and you don't have to worry about accidentally putting more battle scars on it. That said, if you were to get a Slick, avoid their Indigo/Crimson/Black ash finishes. I have one that I've yet to talk about on this channel that is easy to scar and it scars ugly. Get one with a more traditional color and you'll be good. 👍

      @@11thFret Hey thanks for the fast response! I hope I can try one of the Sires someday then, they seem very nice. I was considering the TV Yellow finish anyway so no issues xD About the Slick finish, I like it rustic too, no issues for me neither. Hugs from Spain :)

    Nice work. I prefer the look of the big batwing SG pickguard but the pickup angles do annoy me. It's really just a visual thing, I think the effect on the sound is minimal, if it's there at all. I've been considering doing a mod like yours, or using mounting rings on top of the pickguard (which doesn't quite work as the neck pickup ring overhangs the pickguard edges, which is as visually annoying as the original pickup-angle issue...). I've seen the TV Jones adaptors, but they seem to be made of some kind of plastic, I don't know why they didn't use metal which would've been more durable.

    • @11thFret
      @11thFret Месяц назад

      Thanks! Just a heads-up: the TV Jones adapters space the height adjustment screws much farther apart than Fender's Shawbucker mount. You could probably make it work by ordering a custom pickguard from WD Music and specifying the correct screw spacing in your order. I learned this the hard way when modding a Gibson Flying V as a test. The TV Jones adapters were wider than the Shawbucker mount I mentioned to WD, and the screw hole threads ended up stripping. I had to use small 3-48 nuts underneath the mounts to make it function, but the height adjustment screw heads ended up pointing outward atop the pickguard. I never quite figured out the right spacing to tell WD before a friend helped me make custom ones. The adapters in this video are made from the same material TV Jones uses, which I’m happy with. The key is to make sure your spacing is correct when ordering a pickguard from WD Music. Or order the pickguard with no mounting holes and drill them yourself. But yeah, I've been back and forth with this idea for years, long before this channel. It always bothered me aesthetically. I've packed foam, rubber, bent the humbucker's legs, etc. This adapter was the only way to make it work, allowing me to rotate it back to the stock angle, or make it perfectly level without disassembly.

    • @philipquail4044
      @philipquail4044 Месяц назад

      @@11thFret Thanks, I think I may get some of the TV Jones adaptors just out of interest, even if I don't end up using them. I'd probably order a pickguard without mounting holes, to make sure I got the spacing right! Do you know if the TVJ adaptors fit #3-48 screws? Their website doesn't say very much.

    • @11thFret
      @11thFret Месяц назад

      @philipquail4044 Yeah, ordering the TV Jones adapters was a crap shoot for me too. I ended up throwing caution to the wind anyway via Sweetwater because I knew they’d take care of me with no guilt. My adapters worked with the 3-48 screws, no problem. Well, no problem until I came at the holes from an angle. That was stupid on my part. My impatience won that battle, but simple logic won the war. The TV Jones adapters should still work just fine. However, make sure you have some 3-48 nuts around, just in case. 🤘

    Dude! Ya got to be kidding me! It's not really a design flaw because, due to the tilt and the variation of the distance, a larger array of frequencies are transmitted from the strings to the pickups. Do ya really think Gibson would not have corrected the angle if it negatively affected the sound? You want pups without a tilt, get a Les Paul.

    • @11thFret
      @11thFret Месяц назад

      Definitely not kidding ya. It would be a design flaw if the pickup angles were so extreme that when adjusting the humbucker height for better output, one coil ends up so close to the strings that you accidentally press them against it while playing, while the other coil sits farther away. Does this matter for a bar magnet? Not really, since the center of the magnetic field is what counts. In theory, a pickup could give great output even at a 45º angle, but the pickups would be guaranteed to rub against the strings, defeating the purpose. So, I'd say anything beyond a 5º-10º angle is pushing it. Using the three-screw mount like Fender does helps avoid this issue, which Gibson 'could' do but never has. And honestly, what harm is there in matching the pickup angle to the strings? The answer: None. Plus, yes I own and play a few Les Pauls too. I have that base covered. ;-)

    • @dawnr8511
      @dawnr8511 Месяц назад

      @@11thFret A magnet has the strongest magnetic field at the center of the magnet. Tilt the magnet and you will get a variation of strong to weak from the same magnet to a greater degree than if the magnet is perpendicular to the strings. Sort of like tilting a flashlight where you can see elongation of the light beam. The subtle difference affects the audio signal, there fore, the tone, which can be detected with an audio wave form viewer. It's just like the "tone wood" arguments as to the subtle tone variations caused the density of guitar body and neck woods in both electric and acoustic guitars.

I love the '61 guard as well, but I have friends who absolutely hate it. So I guess it's safe to say that the SG's pickguard appearance issue, if not the entire SG line itself, is divisive at best.

    Hey Kris. I missed this short last year, glad you put this out. People who should know better keep calling coil splitting by the wrong name and it bugs me a little too. I'm no electrician but as I understand it, coil tapping is more commonly done to the transformer coil in the output section of an amplifier, rather than in a pickup or mic coil. For example, in a 50w amp that has variable output and can be switched for 25w, the coil is intercepted at a point that leaves only half the windings in the circuit. Tapping is simply easier to do with the larger, heavy-duty wire of an output transformer's coil than in the much smaller and more fragile coil wiring of a low current transducer such as a guitar pickup. This could be a much longer discussion but basically that's how it was explained to me by an expert and it makes sense. Still, a pickup coil COULD be tapped but it's difficult and almost pointless unless you just want to retain humbucking at a lower volume. But that's what the volume pot (a variable resistor) is for.

    Do they deliberately sell guitars with inputs that fall out (mess up) after one year? Bullshit. 470$ for input! WTF?

    • @11thFret
      @11thFret 2 месяца назад

      Sadly, yes. Most budget guitar companies use the cheapest of the cheap for output jacks. And what makes it worse is that inexperienced players are the ones to buy them, not knowing how to adequately service their guitar. So these cheap jacks eventually loosen and twist around until the wires break free, or the player accidentally bumps the cable to deform the barrel. To be fair, the cheap jacks work for a long time if well cared for. But if anyone is like the way I used to be, hitting the stage after pounding a few beers before the set can be a troublesome outing for that jack. 😂

    If the shaft is too long with the Pure Tone with a strat for example, you'd just just a nut and washer on both sides? Or is this a non issue?

    • @11thFret
      @11thFret 2 месяца назад

      I usually do that with all my output jacks anyway, be it Pure Tone, Switchcraft, etc. But yeah, you’d definitely want to do that with a Pure Tone (2 nuts, 2 washers) as it has a longer barrel than most.

      @@11thFret It's always good when they provide the extra one as well, apparently they didn't do that at first and now they do.. which is great. This is a very good video showing the advantages of these.. I didn't know much about them but they seem great.

      @Jonw8222 Yeah, that used to irk me quite a bit when they’d only give me one nut and one washer. I’m so glad they included all the necessary parts. Thanks for the compliment on this video! I thought it’d only be a stupid little thing, and I’d tell me self,” who is going to watch a video on output jacks?!” Well, apparently quite a few, and it was well received. Thanks again for watching and sharing your awesome compliment!

    My Yamaha SG-2000 also has the same 3-screw pickup suspension design, although it's less necessary because it also uses rings.

      Semi-hollow? Are you talking about the SL56? That's one I've yet to play. One of my favorite guitars I own is a Warmoth/MJT Offset Tele partscaster. So I'm really fond of the offset body with Telecaster components. A P90 in the neck like the SL56 has is pretty appealing.

    Some have found that the bridge is too far down in the body. J-Man found that the nut was too high in the action was too high. Both of these things were solved by a small shim. The pickups are fantastic and the brass bridge is amazing.

    • @11thFret
      @11thFret 2 месяца назад

      My nut and action are great with mine. But yes, as the owner of this guitar and an SL54 (pre tremolo version), I do struggle with the bridge being recessed into the body. It makes intonating, let alone changing strings, way less fun. But beyond that, yes, the pickups and the use of the brass bridge add so much character. I love both a lot.

    I'm very interested in this guitar. I do think I would immediately want to mod with a HB. Can anybody tell me if a humbucker pup would drop in easily with no additional routing? Also I might also want to add a switch to "straight out" bypassing the volume pot. any comments welcome.

    • @11thFret
      @11thFret 2 месяца назад

      Sorry I missed this comment! It's a wicked guitar. But to answer your questions: 1.) No, a standard PAF sized humbucker would not fit without breaking out a router. A soapbar style P90 is both taller and more narrow than a PAF sized bucker. Theoretically, a mini humbucker could and should fit. However, if you look at how soapbar P90s are designed, they mount with two screws going through the middle of the pickup into the body. A mini humbucker mounts with legs on the top and bottom of the pickup, usually affixed to a pickup ring. So you might need to do a little bit of careful routing to make room for said legs and then mount a pickup ring should that extra space be needed. Check out GuitarFetish's website for their soapbar style pickup offerings: www.guitarfetish.com/P90s-Soapbars-Mini-Humbuckers_c_593.html 2.) As far as a switch to bypass the harness, look up "blower switch" or "blower mod". It's one of my favorite mods to do. I usually use a push/pull pot for such a thing, just to make it look clean. Here's an article from Seymour Duncan about it: www.seymourduncan.com/blog/latest-updates/guitar-wiring-explored-adding-a-blower-switch Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Ohhhh goodness. I had one I ordered too. Looked good overall. I never weighed it, but it was super heavy. One of the holes for the dot inlays was too big for the inlay, and the fretboard had terribly jagged edges up high that actually hurt. I contacted them and they said “if you have a rosewood fretboard, put mineral oil on it, and it will swell up and the fret wire won’t stick out.” I told them I had maple, and they basically said, “sorry then.” 🤷 Not long after, the input jack stopped working. I ended up parting it out.

      I still have a lot of the parts off mine. I haven’t done a lot with it. I was mostly interested in the Fishman bridge and the Duncan Hot P90. But I think the only thing I’ve actually used off this was the locking Gotoh locking tuners, which I relocated to one of my Warmoth builds that had non locking Gotoh’s. That sucks they treated your issue with total dismissal. I’ve not heard the best feedback about Route 101 Guitars since I posted this video.

    I don’t like the precut frets they never fit correctly they are all over the place. The more you fretboard width changes the more variation you will see plus you can feel it.

      Agreed. It's a tough pill to swallow sometimes, but is unfortunately a necessary evil on budget instruments to keep build costs down. Sometimes budget guitars are like half-way finished DIY kits that still require a significant setup.

    I got a Lake Placid Blue model last year that was sold as a clearance item. Seller told me that nobody showed interest in this guitar which was pretty odd to me as I immediately fell in love with the neck and overall feel of this instrument. While there were no issues initially, after a while I ran into trouble with the bridge pick up which for some peculiar reason was not producing the same output in comparison to the neck pick up. I took it twice to a technician and finally the output was OK, however it became very microphonic. He along with a couple of other technicians suggested this could be because the guitar is a vintage style instrument and does not support high gain. But I see now that this is a general issue. Can you please suggest a brand and model of pick ups that will help me in eliminating the problem?

    • @11thFret
      @11thFret 3 месяца назад

      Sorry it’s taken a minute for me to respond. I’m currently out of state on a trip. That aside, I’ve also since had an issue with one of my pickups too. One of the coils failed on the neck humbucker. I was able to “save” it, so to speak, after identifying that as the issue, wiring up a permanent split instead to just run the other coil. But that is absolutely not satisfactory to me. So I swapped the pickups. I haven’t really jumped down the rabbit hole with options just yet. But I do have a wealth of uninstalled pickups at my disposal to choose from. So, for the moment, I choose the GFS (aka: GuitarFetish) Lipstick humbuckers. They honestly sound pretty damn amazing, but sit inside the pickguard weird. I’m not dead set on keeping these Lipstick installed yet, so I don’t want to commit to ordering a new pickguard that could contour around the curves of the lipsticks. But, for what these lipsticks both sound and look like on a Toronado, I am a fan. If I were to change them out again, I might consider a set of Seymour Duncan 59 Models or Pearly Gates. I even have an uninstalled set of chrome covered GFS Dream 180’s that need a home. I’ve also toyed with the idea of ordering a set of GFS Surf 180’s for a review to be installed in the Toronado. There’s a lot of possibilities.

      All I can say is that mine ‘was not’ at the time of filming. However, as the weather changed from normal to broil, I did notice the neck’s maple shaft had shrunk a little bit. The fret ends are still coated with poly, but did blister up. And I can now feel the edge of the skunk stripe on certain spots. So yeah, now I don’t know if Squier allowed these maple shafts to age properly.

    Thanks for the review/unboxing! That was interesting to notice the effects didn’t register visually but they were actually present - had no idea about that discrepancy. Fun fact: it’s possible to get the guitar under $300 if purchased on a Prime Day, like the recent 2-day window. Seems consistent enough based on its Amazon reviews. Thanks again for the review!

    • @11thFret
      @11thFret 3 месяца назад

      Thanks! Yeah, I was supposed to have the guitar 2 weeks before prime day and something apparently happened in shipping where a replacement had to be sent. So I literally filmed this on Prime Day and had to take my screenshots the day after during the final stages of editing. As an Amazon Affiliate myself, I was pretty bummed that I missed the opportunity since this is how I get paid (which is, at the most, 1/1000th of the minimum wage). I wasn’t aware of the effects discrepancy either (obviously). In editing, I thought it was kind of funny that I was unaware, yet everything captured. That wah effect at the end was horrid, and I didn’t get to really react to it. Oh well. But thanks for commenting!

    For 349$ you should not have ANY major set up issues. No excuse for that, for multiple reasons. Add at least 80$-150$ if you need post set up. .. the guy says "everything's good"... after talking about the shyte set up. no, it isn't "good". not a pro review..more just yapping.

      For starters, my condolences for whoever hurt you that now causes you to lash out at complete strangers. It’s unfortunate for all who take on the choice of conversing with you. Second, at no point in the video did I throw it on my bench to take measurements, for various reasons. I just went with a somewhat standard unboxing formula. But if you would have just asked vs attacked, I might tell you the low E is at 1.9mm off the 12th fret and 1.7mm off the high E. It wasn’t as bad as my optics led me to believe. Still high, but about as high as my Taylor’s were when I got them. Second, I’ve been playing it a lot since filming, almost non stop. It’s not required a major retune since I tuned up for the video shoot and still sounds awesome. It’s in good shape and I’ve still no issues. Thanks for commenting, and watch out for your knuckles. I’d hate to learn that you tripped over them at some point.

      There are players who like it high and there are players who prefer it low - and since it is easier to lower the bridge -- nut the manufacturers market the guitars a little higher.

    Hi Kris. You can send that Enya over to me if you get tired of it. 😁 I like the body shape on this one a lot more than the full size model that came out during covid. This one's actually shaped more like a traditional guitar. Their LP-shaped electric is interesting too and evidently these guitars are real instruments and not toys. Thanks man, good review!

Now I’ve got this one and I can’t stop playing it. 😂 I do want to try their latest Nova Go Sonic (LP shape). I saw them at NAMM, but usually shy away from all-in-one electrics having had prior experience with things like the Cort Effector. But now everyone is telling me how incredible they are. So here’s hoping I get one soon. 🤞
