Oh we wanna talk about bad acting? Acting 101: What does my character want? You’ve heard the cliche “what’s my motivation?” Part of the reason this comes off so wrong is that it appears Maddie has been taught how to vaguely act like someone with Autism, but not the tiny specifics of desire that causes each individual movement. It doesn’t look like her character wants things from moment to moment, like real humans do. It’s the difference between an autistic child communicating excitedly a series of specific thoughts with and through their stims, and the mean bullies on the playground vaguely mocking the actions. Maddie studied for this by watching videos and learning to copy the movements and general emotions, the same way she trained for dance competitions. But it looks like there isn’t enough specificity here to form an authentic, real-world character. Ideally they would have found an actress from within the community, absolutely. But if they insisted on using someone neurotypical, there’s a lot more acting homework needed to do this work justice. Source: 10 years in the industry

first, don't worry about the background sounds, it's totally fine. Second, I have learned more about autism in the last 2 days than in the last 20 years, thanks to videos like yours. I hope Sia will understand her mistake and LISTEN to the voices of the people she said she wanted to support/help. I don't think she looked hard for an autistic actor because she has championed Maddie since her first video. I would have expected Maddie to be in ANY movie Sia would do. I feel sad, for your girl, that people can still be so mean (I'm Black so I'm sad not surprised), hopefully, she can be stronger in the future from her predicament as a young girl. OK, now let me go and watch Pt.2
Yes! The mocking! I was bullied so much as a child. Picked on for my quirks. I vividly remember doing something. I was excited about something, can't remember what. But there was some boys who copied me, and laughed at me. My husband watched the video and felt uncomfortable as well. He said it was like watching a bully mocking a child. That's when it clicked for me, why I felt so uncomfortable.
I watched the trailer with my autistic son. He had to turn it off because of the sensory overload he got from it. This film is obviously not made with this in mind. Also, anything Autism Speaks lends it name to is definitely a no from us.
Sia didn’t need to get into those fiery, profanity-filled exchanges on Twitter. Responding to “haters,” advocates, and critics Directly only fuels the flames of anger even more
I'm not in the spectrum but I live with ADHD. I just found your video and wanted to say this was very well explained and clearly stated. I think you're very brave, I could tell this was an upsetting subject. Please keep uploading!
I'm so sorry Sadie got bullied so badly at school. My niece is 4 and autistic and she goes to a mainstream school. The teachers have told her parents that the other children are scared of her when she has a meltdown. I would think that would be a good opportunity to educate children on how people are different but they only care about the children's learning. She is being assessed every 6 months to see if the school can meet her needs or if she needs to go to a special needs school. She has a 1 to 1 but sometimes things get overwhelming. I would love it if schools taught a class about children's different needs so bullying doesn't happen but it wouldn't get them good results in exams which is all they care about 🙄
I have watched the movie trailer and I understand what you're saying. I felt really uncomfortable and was even squirming a bit at the faces and the way she was acting. Autistic people do not act like that even when they are non verbal 😬
After this corona thing, I'd love to meet you guys someday. I live in Michigan too. I used to flap but it now almost immediately turns into a hand clasp because I was made fun of. The r word sticks out in my mind the most. I agree. The Good Doctor and Atypical handle their actors better I feel (I can only speak for Atypical directly tho). Non-verbal autistics are less likely to be shown in shows etc so I feel like an actually autistic actresses should have been cast in the role.
I am so sorry your child was bullied and punched. She sounds like a great person and someone I would want to be friends with If I was her age. I don't personally have autism but my brother does and when I found this news out I was heartbroken I told my best friend she said I was being dramatic but obviously I am not. I will continue to support you and your family, advocate for autism, and be kind to all. Have a great day and stay strong! ❤️
My niece has autism and I’m so afraid that she will be bullied in school. She’s already been excluded from a family holiday, which broke my heart. I told these people that if my niece wasn’t welcome, then I will never visit there again either. She was 4 at the time. 😞

Ok. LOL. I’m autistic too. And as a twelve year old she’s more likely to disagree then agree with me these days. 🤷♀️ But I’ve definitely done my best to help her have a positive self image about being autistic and to teach her that organizations that speak about us like we’re sub human are seriously in the wrong. That’s probably imparting bias to you. But with autism speaks talking about us like a disease it’s important for her to be confident and strong before she faces that stuff.

Okay so right away from the trailer we can see that Maddie should not be playing this part. She’s just not a good actress and makes this role soo cringe. But I’m trying to understand the difference between this and movies like What’s Eating Gilbert Grape or One Flew Over the Cuckoos nest? These are extremely popular great movies where “able bodied” actors play a character who is not. Is this Sia movie wrong just because Maddie isn’t a good actress? Serious question.
Azhy Robertson plays the main character in the new horror film, "Come Play" is a neurotypical actor playing an Autistic part. Now to me what is an outrage is Sheldon in Big Bang Theory, despite ASD is never said it is heavily suggested.
Yeah, I hate The Big Bang Theory as the laughs come from the social awkwardness that is suggested only suggested that the character is autistic. Basically seems to make fun of autism.

Sia has EDS. It’s heavily associated with autism and is even one cause of autism because it is a genetic collagen mutation that structures the brain differently, aka not neurotypical. There is a very good possibility that Sia is high functioning and on the autism spectrum. I personally have both. EDS effects anything with collagen so, everything in your body. i didnt want to be put off by the trailer, it felt wrong to feel weird about maddie acting the stims, but im so glad you worded it like this, it really wouldnt have been hard to find an autistic actor to play the part, even if they acted specific stims for the director, because they could then relate to it/ it would be like a nt actor acting out something theve done or said before. also, i didnt want to get mad with it until ive seen the movie but sias tweets made me feel like she didnt have the right mindset to have thought it throgh enough, that tbh i feel shes let a lot of people down.
My daughter is autistic and has adhd as well. She is 11 and mind of 4 year old. I was dumbstruck when I seen the trailer and it angered me to the point of tears. She has really misrepresented the community. My daughter does the flapping or shakes her fist. My shining light is my child is part of school that has many different children with special abilities. I hope Sia sees this video and many of the others that was posted as well.
Hi Cammie, thank you for this video! I am wondering if you and Sadie react well to gluten? I think there are 2 types of ADHD: one part of the neurodiversity movement people are born with, and another that looks just like it but is a symptom of a problem, like a gluten problem. All of my childhood, I had extreme ADHD symptoms. When I was an undergrad a few years ago, I was dealing with severe eczema. My friend recommended going gluten-free. It cleared up my skin, but it also unexpectedly took my ADHD away. There was one time I accidentally had gluten, and all my ADHD symptoms came back. I know this sounds bizarre, but it really happened to me. New research shows a strong link between two. I wish they would do more research because it could help a lot of people with the same type of ADHD I had. I am nervous to share this story because I know gluten-free is a fad, so sometimes I feel like I don't get taken seriously 😔 Sending love ❤
@@mudkipjuice I wasn't misdiagnosed with the criteria. I was impulsive, hyperactive, disorganized, and inattentive. My mom had to constantly drive me back to school because I would forget my homework. I got in trouble all the time in school. I was constantly on the run. I remember how excruciating it used to feel to stay seated. I remember how impossible it was for me to go from point A to B without running or skipping. I remember always feeling like I had infinite energy. I remember how difficult it was for me to focus in school. Please don't invalidate my experiences 😔 The discovery was completely accidental because I was just trying to get rid of my eczema, and wasn't expecting the ADHD to go away as well. I didn't say I had the ADHD that is just a neurological difference, like autism. But I did have something that looked just like it and meets the criteria. I am Autistic and I am passionate about neurodiversity. I think the type of ADHD that is part of the neurodiversity movement is awesome. But, I do want to help people who may have the type of ADHD I had and not know it, like I didn't.
@@jajcaserobicie Hi. It really happened. That is why I am trying to raise awareness to help people like me. Gluten is also the reason for the unexplained gastrointestinal problems I had my entire childhood. I just want more research to be done, so if someone is getting evaluated for ADHD, they can first get tested for a gluten problem to see if that is something that can get ruled out right away. I wish I knew about it earlier. When I gave up gluten, I was in disbelief for a while because the difference was striking. ADHD as a neurological difference cannot go away, just like autism can't. But what I had that looked and behaved just like it can go away because it was a symptom of a gluten problem.
Hi Patricia, we were gluten free and casein free for two years and we didn’t see a difference. We did it back then because Patrick was super allergic to dairy as an infant and Sadie texted as allergic to wheat. What we didn’t realize then was that after further testing she tested as allergic to everything on the skin prick test (her real allergy was pollen and apparently that sometimes happens) and the allergist said the initial blood test was so low it never should have been mentioned. Me and several of the kids are lactose intolerant. It’s mostly milk and yogurt that’s a bad idea. Mostly cheese is okay. But yeah we did try the gluten thing (and you asking is totally okay) and it didn’t do it for us.
Unfortunately I haven't been alone since March, not for a single moment of my life, and Maggie never stops vocal stims. If I waited until I had quiet, I literally would not have a channel. She's not even quiet at night. If that's a deal breaker you probably should not watch my videos because until school starts it will always be a problem and who knows when that will be. I say it in many of my videos, but I kind of tired of explaining it in every single one. I also get tired of comment about it though.

i didnt want to be put off by the trailer, it felt wrong to feel weird about maddie acting the stims, but im so glad you worded it like this, it really wouldnt have been hard to find an autistic actor to play the part, even if they acted specific stims for the director, because they could then relate to it/ it would be like a nt actor acting out something theve done or said before. also, i didnt want to get mad with it until ive seen the movie but sias tweets made me feel like she didnt have the right mindset to have thought it throgh enough, that tbh i feel shes let a lot of people down.
it wouldn't have, considering the fact that several offered to.
So glad I found your channel. Thank you for what you do.
That is not ADHD. ADHD is a neuological difference that can not be changed, fixed, or cured. If your ADHD disappeared, you were misdiagnosed.
@@Patricia-li8bh well, if it's true, then gluten made you have similar symptoms to adhd, but adhd definitely just can't disappear like that.
Hard to focus with the background sounds :(
Unfortunately I haven't been alone since March, not for a single moment of my life, and Maggie never stops vocal stims.
Aw man. An autism channel with vocal stimming in the background. Who woulda thought. Get over it hun.
@@ratzwilson6101 Don't tell me to get over it. I have ADHD and genuinely wanted to hear what was being talked about. my brain sometimes can't separate loud sounds over a softer one. And I have autism too, so don't tell me to 'get over it'
@@Autmazing Oh right. That makes sense. Thanks for explaining.
@@ElsaMusicVideos as do I lol. But the info is worth rewinding for. Sorry, im a bit snappy about this whole thing and didn't have to be mean.
You know what I think sia said she tried to use a girl on the spectrum but it was too stressful for her I think the girl didn’t agree of how sis was trying to Pro tray it and left and sia probably couldn’t find anyone that would agree with her view and used marry boom
