    I have seen these pilings many times however never looked at them as being around the rock piles at all. It makes perfect sense on how you described them. I am totally amazed. There was another youtube video in which backs up your theory and locations of a gopro video underwater showing these specific pilings underwater with the slants and I was amazed seeing the grouper there in numbers. Must of been a least 6 of them that were very nice size in one spot. With that said, the two videos combined teaches and proves everything in which you stated here, thank you again. I heard about this guy "Scooter" from my ex brother in law who worked in the bait shop a while back, but never had the opportunity to meet him at all. You have been blessed there as well.

    Awesome video Joshua! I lived down there back in 05-06 and we used to hunt the grouper around the Skyway. We'd pick up mangrove snapper constantly. Our method was to cast out weighted live baits and just hope to feel rock when the weight hit the bottom.

    Great info, thanks. Went there yesterday. Found what you were talking about. Got there a bit too late and the current got too strong about an hour after we got there and netting or hooking baitfish became difficult. But just after slack tide baitfish were thick. Saw a bunch of big sheepshead and a few grouper swimming around the pilings. Then a grouper that had to go 40 - 50 lbs swirled at the surface next to my friends baitfish. Tried to swim a yellowtail close to the pilings but the outgoing current was too strong. Will try again.

    Great video on the spacific spots and what kind of general tackel to use... Ive fished the skyway for well over 10 years. And found a few common spots for medium grouper and small flounder thats easy acess by kyak.. This just showed me wat to look for by the pillers. And one question for you is witch live bait do you averagley use for grouper. I use large freash gren backs cicar mullet or cut lady fish.. Any comments that can help my days off for fishing will be gread mand mych apreacheated thanks

    Thank you so so much for the video. JOSHUA, when you freelining the pinfish, will the strong current push the bait to the top of the water? Or they will constantly swim toward the bottom disregarding how strong the current is?

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  9 лет назад

      +Mike Bui Hello Mike, the current will pull them to the top. That is where you have to learn when to let out line and so forth.

    • @iancordova
      @iancordova 8 лет назад

      Joshua Taylor Hi Captain Taylor, along the lines of this question is it best to free line only when the current is going away from you/bridge? For example I had a blue runner that I caught yesterday on the south pier. I had it in my well with aerator but died. I moved to a different location where I got a big hit before last year that I hook set to early. I hooked the blue runner up on my 8ft medium/heavy penn rod and reel but was casting to the west but current was pushing to the east. My bait would just keep coming back to the bridge. I ended up putting a 2oz weight and eventually got a big hit that started taking line but once again I think I hook set to early. What do you do in strong wind and current? I caught another blue runner and free lined that but kept tracking over to the neighbor. Is there anything you can do about that scenario? Thanks in advanced!

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  8 лет назад

      Hello Ian, unfortunately you can only free line away from the pier. The rock piles are out away from the pier. If the tide is coming in you can free line under the east span and try your luck that way. I have caught many fishing the incoming under the bridge it just isn't very pleasant reeling them in.

      With a real strong current(3-5 knots), I`ve actually used a #1 trolling planer! Works well with about 15 ft of leader.

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  10 лет назад

      Hello Nathan, you have to keep tension on the line. It's delicate because there has to be enough for the bait to swim downward but not too much slack that the grouper or bait rocks you. Practice is the key.

    @BogusOne 9 лет назад +1

    Have you ever had to deal with your line/hook getting caught on the rubble, if so how do I prevent it? I've had my line completely caught quite often, not sure if it's from other people's junk but it takes a good 10-15min to unsnag it. Since I don't want to cut the line, because that would just add to the to the problem for other people.

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  9 лет назад +1

      ThabogusTV Absolutely, it is one of those nuisance problems that we have to deal with especially now that more and more people are using super braids. I think a large portion just cut the line allowing a mess of line to collect.

    what side the tampa or sarasota do you think holds the best, most, and biggest fish? also do you have any preferred weather or tide???

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  10 лет назад +1

      Hello Joseph, it depends on what type of fish. They both are great fisheries. Try and go when the barometer is rising near a new or full moon for the best results. High tide at dark or sun rise, with a rising barometer and new moon is deadly. ;)

    When is the best time of the year to Grouper fish from Skyway fishing pier

  • @jeremiahgiles3593
    @jeremiahgiles3593 10 лет назад

    Can catch the grouper and snapper year round or do they shut off during certain seasons? I know the limits and seasons for keeping them go on and off, but is there a right and wrong time for finding them? I feel like in summer or winter the fish may move offshore...

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  10 лет назад +1

      The mildly cooler periods during transition from summer to fall and winter to spring always produce great action but you can't beat July snapper fishing.

    • @jeremiahgiles3593

      ***** thanks! Do the snapper eat pinfish too? I was thinking cut greenbacks or squid strips on bucktail jigs

    • @Saltyscales

      They definitely will eat small pinfish. Sardines and small threadfins can;t be beat.

    Thanks for the tips! Here for vacation from Virginia... Do you typically catch your bait from the same place on the bridge? Do you just use a simple bottom rig or do you try to sabiki them up?

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  8 лет назад

      Welcome, you can catch bait anywhere on the pier. A self made sabiki tipped with shrimp will work just fine.

  • @lvstream720
    @lvstream720 5 лет назад

    The only thing that confuses me is that you mentioned about casting towards the crossed pylons. But then you talked about freeline. Once you freeline,, the batefish could swim away from the pylons/ Rock piles. Feeline is great. But i cant avoid your bait from swimming away from your targeted area

    Very informative video. I was out there during my winter vacation and I kept getting rocked. What type of rod and reel combo do you recommend?

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  11 лет назад +1

      Thanks, yes you have to be quick on the strike or they will get you every time. I use a Daiwa Saltist with the an upgraded drag. I like a 7-8 ft Calstar rod. The tip is sensitive but the rod has a great back bone to get the fish from the structure.

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  8 лет назад +2

      Hello Peter, yes the bay is full of grouper but the pier piles have been pressured so much that the fishery isn't as good as it used to be. Not to mention you have to fight all of the fishing line that is carelessly left out on the reefs to get tangled in.
