    To a guy who has been working with LiDAR for 20+ years, this is very exciting news.

    • @EonSound
      @EonSound 4 года назад +4

      Maybe you're in the know so I'll ask you. Does this give people the ability to virtually interact with something by just pointing the camera and reaching out at it? Or is it not that accurate on the iPad yet?

    • @AR-fh2uh
      @AR-fh2uh 4 года назад +9

      @@EonSound I assume that mostly it will be used to improve 3d capture to support artefact removal related to photogrammetry modelling of smooth or spaced surfaces. It will also provide a more accurate depth of field to remove glitches from augmented reality applications. Ultimately it will just add to the existing array of sensors such as compass, imu, gps, cameras etc. to create a more seamless user experience. There is potential that it could work to make tge iphone the best autofocus camera on the market.

    I believe it has a 15 meter limited range so surveyors may be disappointed at the current limits. What I want to see is whether it can accurately scan a kitchen. The difference for custom kitchen cabinets made entirely on a large CNC would revolutionize the industry. They could scan, leave, and come back with perfectly fitting cabinets that contour around every bulge in the plaster or out of plumb wall.

    I guess there wasn't a lot of information out there when this video was made. I recently got an M1 iPad and have been playing with the the Polycam app to create 3D models with the Lidar sensor and from my research it seems that the lidar sensor in the iPad is too basic to create clear 3D models of small objects so unless there is some clever work around for that I don't think you’ll be scanning the various items on your desk.
    It's the kind of thing that needs to be included now so that people can start developing ideas to use it for and that will drive the technology to become more refined in coming years. As it is, reducing the size and cost of the the lidar sensor to put it in an iPad is amazing. Exciting stuff both in spite of it's limitations and because of how much room for rapid improvement there is.

      True, the number of youtubers writing this feature off as a bit part or a gimmicky feature is really annoying. This has so many implications in other fields such as medical, construction and other professional fields. RUclips reviews these days only focus on video and / or sound editing. like as if it’s the only use for these products.

    • @jasonbourne5049
      @jasonbourne5049 4 года назад

      True. I was waiting for something like this to be available. It would make the construction tracking and follow-up process so much easier. Rather than having to visit work site over and over again for review and verification, simply skimming over the 3D model for details would help a lot. I hope the technology is improved and advanced over the years so that the scanning range is greater, and accuracy is much better.

    I think LiDAR has to be improved quite a bit. Just need to add several light-dots so that even the smallest item in the room gets a decent 3D replica. But that obviously needs a whole lot more computing power. So the limit is not the sensor, but the processor. I guess we'll have to wait another few years to see a very good 3D scanning iDevice.

      The devs of the Display.land app suggested on Discord they were investigating the lidar module, but as of this post they haven’t pushed any updates to benefit the 2020 iPP yet. Their current incarnation doesn’t do much better than the abandoned Autodesk 123D Catch iOS app from a decade back - IOW, not great. I’ve tried gear like the Fuel3D and EORA scanner with mixed results. There aren’t any 3D scanning tech that checks ALL the boxes: convenience, mobility, accuracy, detail, speed, and (non-subscription) affordability. The time is ripe for some clever monkey to leverage the number of 2020 lidar iPads and dominate this field.

    This sensor can be used for a future implementation of some iGlass, if they manage to create an interface where what you see through the iGlass is floating around you, the information from this sensor would be very helpful to know where to position these menus, alerts, images, etc. see the distance of a hand and calculate if it is within distance to interact with this floating interface and perform actions. This new sensor is very interesting, I hope to see an implementation like the one I imagine in the future. I can imagine not needing a monitor or keyboard and that they are projected by the iGlass, the information provided by this sensor could facilitate this, watching television without a TV through the iGlass, watching RUclips, etc.

    The iPad Pro 2020 is great. I have the most expensive one they sell, 12.9, 1 terabit etc. with that being said , the LIDAR and the AUGMENTED REALITY will never be used by by 90% of users.

    • @ApplySkills
      @ApplySkills 2 года назад

      What makes you say lidar and augmented reality will never be used? Imagine one day when the technology becomes so advanced, you can look at something in real life and an information overlay would appear on your new high-tech glasses showing everything about that object, what is it, where it came from, where you can buy it, relevant news, etc. However, I'm afraid if that time does come, we'll be trapped in a virtual matrix. Pretty cool nonetheless.

      Mmmm, there have been a lot of products and extras that Apple has tried and dropped in the past. This includes the "Newton" hand writing recognition pad, going way back to the '80s and continued with it's computers so as to make their products fit much closer to the definition of proprietary. However, Apple has always and definitely tried to follow Steve Jobs lead with their 1990's mantra of "Think Different."

    If your video is anything to go by, the '3D model' produced at this stage looks too primitive to be of any real use. Hopefully it will improve quickly so that an office chair, such as that shown in the video, doesn't look like a melting blob of foam.
