      @AlterFettthere’s no straight answer to this question, there’s A LOT of variables (starting from the quality of production / recording, commercial potential, and up to how active you are on social media, how good you are with making content, etc.). It could literally be any number, even $0, if one of your videos goes viral. I would guesstimate than on average, if you invest $10k, it is very LIKELY you will have 10k ML. is it possible to invest $1k and get 100k ML? also yes, but a lot less likely.

    Hey what's up Andrew. I have a question about an old video. So in the video it's about posting full length music videos and running that as an ad to see who's watching 95% of your artists videos because those people most likely like it. In it you say to run a conversion Campaign and make the conversion happen on your ad. When I tried to do that it showed it wasn't possible to make the conversion on the ad. Is there a way around this?

    I read somewhere that Spotify well continue to pay mechanical royalties (publishing royalties) for all artists regardless of how many streams they generate, but NOT “recording royalties” (rights holders) for artists with under 1,000 streams per song a year. Basically what radio pays. Correct me if I’m wrong.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  3 месяца назад +1

      Yeah you'll still collect royalties from BMI / Songtrust etc, but you wouldn't collect payments from your distributor if the song has under 1,000 streams in a year.

    One of the things that gets under my skin is the whole serious/non-serious artist aspect of this mess. I consider myself a serious artist in that I'm doing all the things this channel (and others like it) recommend. But Spotify doesn't consider me serious because of the amount of monthly streams I get. It's just crazy.

    • @MajorMoment
      @MajorMoment 3 месяца назад

      “serious” is not exactly the right word to use, neither is “professional”. don’t take those words literally. you can be a serious professional musician as a session player, having no music on Spotify at all, or a cover band professional serious musician. you can be a serious professional artist that creates wonderful music, maybe the best music ever, but we have to take into consideration things like demand - how “popular” is what you’ve created? does it have potential to be listened to by tens / hundreds of thousands of people around the world? how successful are you as a business (because business is a necessary part of being a successful DIY artist these days). Idk why it gets under your skin, honestly, you have to be realistic about who you are in the music industry in general, in the same playing field with Taylor Swift who had a tour earning something like $1B, Drake, Bieber, etc.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  3 месяца назад

      I agree with MajorMoment here. There really isn't a good word for it. It really just applies to how successful you are on Spotify specifically, because you can be incredibly serious and professional as an artist overall without meeting Spotify's definition of a 'serious artist'.
      Some artists just don't focus on streaming but still do amazing because of shows, sync work, physical media, Patreon etc.

    Man, I dont understand the angry towards Spotify on making the threshold. RUclips has been doing this since ever. I have lots of videos here on RUclips and didnt ever receive a penny from RUclips because I didnt reach the 4000 hours threshold. I think this is fair, probably is too little money.
    Dont get me wrong, there's a other reasons to be mad at Spotify. I just dont think the threshold is one of them.
    Great video, btw. Love your content.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  3 месяца назад +2

      Yeah I agree. It's significantly harder to become monetized on RUclips than it is to get your songs monetized on Spotify with the new changes. Many people go years before they make a penny from RUclips, and miss out on hundreds of dollars in potential payments.
      While i'm not a fan of the per song approach, I feel they've set the bar low enough where any serious artist will have no problem overcoming the threshold in a reasonably short amount of time. It'd be lame if they were just pocketing that money but they're just reallocating it to the artists that do hit the threshold.
      Thanks dude, glad you enjoyed!

    Making the new 1k streams threshold is just an excuse to save money and to save their sinking ship. It should be illegal imo, because they profit from the smallest artist even if they have few listeners. These artists have worked for the songs and should be paid for the art Spotify profit from no matter what.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  3 месяца назад +8

      They aren't keeping this money though, they're redistributing it to other artists who do hit the threshold. They effectively have 5 million artists taking up server space, aren't generating any additional revenue for them and are making pennies that they likely don't even cash out from their distributor.
      Spotify doesn't get paid per stream. They get paid in subscriptions and ad revenue. Each pool is added up and divided by the number of stream per that pool and paid to each rights holder.
      RUclips has a threshold, so does Soundcloud, Audiomack etc. When you upload clips to social media, if you don't tag the audio you don't get paid anything for your posts. There is precedence for this.
      I'm not saying I love the threshold. I would much rather they just went to a user centric model. But having some type of threshold isn't unreasonable and allocates more money to artists that actually rely on it.

  • @federicoaschieri
    @federicoaschieri 3 месяца назад

    Spotify will prove to care about equality and democracy when it will be like social media: you upload a song, and it can go viral entirely on its own, with no promotion. Until then, we should not buy the narrative "Spotify cares about artists". Spotify is a just a tool in the hand of labels, which press hard to introduce thresholds and to make independent artists' life difficult. It will make no significant difference whatsoever to the top 250K artist the fact that some artists will be denied royalties. So you can attack their narrative with the same argument they use to steal from the poorer. I think the real reason behind this move is mainly to prepare Spotify to the AI age, in which everyone and his brother will upload music on Spotify. But again this is an unfair solution, because not only AI will be stopped, also real people.

    This is just historically how art disturbutes itself, photography is like this, film making, illustration, all art forms have a pareto distribution attached to them dictating productivity and public consumption.

      I think something like this makes sense. 1,000 streams per year is too harsh though. Maybe like if an artist has less than 100 monthly listeners, and the song has less than 1,000 lifetime streams, has been out for at least 2 years and hasn't gotten 100 streams in the past year it gets removed. Just to avoid new artists getting screwed, and legitimate artists with a history of success being removed just because they retired or something.
