• 6- Tip- How to Choose ...
She is WAY MORE EDUCATED than I am, and she goes into great detail.
We are making Butterick 6418. There will be three FITTING videos. Sewing video will follow soon.
I highly recommend that you make a muslin (test garment) first. Be sure you add ease to it -- at least an inch extra at the side seams. It may turn out great, but it may not. You need it to determine what other issues may remain after fitting the paper pattern to yourself.
If your fabric is MORE stretchy than the guide on the back of the pattern envelope, it will probably work even better for this pattern.
For you are one of the best sewing teacher…..make me feel like I am talking to friend ! -- even though English is not my main language, I can understand you very well. I am so glad that I found you channel! Many blessings and gracias!
It’s not too long Joy, if you cut corners you’d just leave us scratching our heads, and then disillusioned with our ability to follow instructions and learn. So thank you for ALL you detail, it’s very much appreciated. 🌹❤️
Thank you for all of your information on the fitting process - I agree that as you get older and you cannot fit into a pattern out of the packet it takes time to get it right. Do not worry about how long it takes - this is invaluable information and cannot be rushed if we are to understand it.
Thank you for your time and effort to produce this series.
I just started watching part 1 and am loving every minute of it.😊
Love your personality. Yes, we who follow you love watching you. Thank you
for your time and perservance.
😂 I love your way of teaching
Thank you Cindy. If I had a camera person, I could teach a whole lot more.
Thank you, Joy for taking the time to remind us all just how important it is to measure, measure, measure. As you say, it is important to also add that little bit of ease to the side seams. Add the ease and I know I will be glad I did because I can always take a little bit off if I need to.
I'm not following along because I did not purchase the pattern. I watch because I learn so much from you and I don't like missing any of your videos. I love, love, love that blouse you have on!
Joy, you do a wonderful job teaching, as a camera person and editor. You are wonderful!
Thank you Joy,,,your a great teacher! Your a natural. Have a blessed evening.
Joy- I have to share with you a little story. I was quilting a small baby quilt yesterday for my soon to be great nephew. And suddenly there was a strange noise happening..not a particularly loud noise..just a different noise. And your voice immediately popped into my head when you say “If you hear a strange noise STOP THE TRAIN!”. So I stopped to see what was going on. And there was a huge mess of a bird’s nest on the back AND the backing had flipped in on itself and I had started quilting the corner of the quilt onto the inner part of the quilt! Am I ever glad that I STOPPED THE TRAIN before it got worse! Thank you Joy!! You are a great teacher and super fun to watch!!
Hello from Italy dear Joy! You are such an amazing teacher and woman as well! Once the pattern becames available on Amazon I Will definitely buy It and follow your sal. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Sending you a lot of prayers from Italy
Oh Joy I 100 percent agree with you on the perfectionist statement and I can relate. It’s pretty much exhausting and stressful.
I drive my own self crazy at times with being so particular about the silliest things.
Great visual. I never understood about armhole until you demonstrated!
You are a very gifted teacher with lots of sewing experience, not attached to one system, but implementing the best/wisest from various systems . I appreciate being explained why something is done (or not), as well as the how.
To measure circumference by yourself there is a measuring tape with a slider and a press button that keeps the tape closed so you can measure. Sure Fit Designs used to carry it. There is also a Hurth system of tapes including the sliding one for measuring without help.
PatternEase and EasyPattern can be sewn as well for trials. Both are resistant enough for doing and undoing several times and are see through to copy a pattern. I use frixion pens to draw on Pattern Ease and iron away the mistakes.
Thanks for these videos. I am trying to decide if I am brave enough to tackle this pattern. I am new to fitting myself. Basically know next to nothing about it. I am going to watch all three of these and then decide. ❤ I love it when you go in full teacher mode. You are very helpful. I have been watching your channel for a little over three years now and have enjoyed them all.
Not at all too long, I enjoy your teaching videos
Joy, I'm looking forward to learning a lot in this series because I have a weird body and have a terrible time with fit. After having breast reduction surgery when I was thinner from weight loss surgery, then regaining part of that weight now I'm bigger than I should be in the waist and hips. Yet still smaller than patterns in the chest. And shoulders have never fit. While you are talking I have to get a quilt back ready but I'll be stopping and repeating to make sure I hear it all correctly. Thank you, Joy!
TY so much. I appreciate hearing your line of thinking for these patterns. I seem to think along the same lines so you make sense to me. You don't need to concern yourself with people complaining. Some will complain no matter what. Off to Pt 2 :-))
Thank you, Joy. On my way to Part 2!
Joy, never let anyone tell you that you are doing an excellent job no matter what you produce on youtube. I appreciate all the time and your desire to get it right. Just for the time you take to makes these "how to" measure and cut and design clothes that fit. When making your own clothes, the difference in taking time to fit the pattern to your body and not taking time is: does it look home made versus tailored for your body. And when you take time to measure before you cut, only have to do it once! Vogue patterns are tricky too, but they come real close to by body measurements and curves (or lack of curves--mine is flat and straight!)
Hi Joy thank you for your inspiration on fitting. Thoroughly enjoy your friendly and casual way of presenting. Takes the stress and worry out before I begin. Calling from U.K. and wondered if we had the equivalent of your pattern ease over here.
I’m new to sewing. So glad I’ve found your channel. I’ve watched all the videos on this butterick top Oct 31 I’m diving in to this project.
Perfect body like Viv. I definitely do not. Fit has become an issue the older I get but with your help it gets easier. Thank you
Joy i have sewn hobby pieces lately. I was so nerves to do a pattern ,but you gave me inspiration to do one. If I make a mistake I make one and try again. I just got out my sure fit designs that I have had I know for 15 years and never opened. From you I learned alot about adjusting patterns. I am going to try and I will let you know what happens
Good for you Vickie. Be very careful with your measurements. If you measure wrong, your pattern won't fit right. Be sure you mark the correct dots. I'm sure you understand.
Thanks Joy for doing this! 😊
I love, love, love these videos on fitting. Got my pattern and my pattern ease ( because I have everything that Judy Kissinger sales) and I am going to follow your video to make something that fits.
I’m so looking forward to this process…..thank you for sharing
I’m going to be watching & studying this while on vacation. However right now I’m just totally frustrated with trying to fit pants. Things just not working out no matter what I try so I’m going back to beginning. I’m working with Surefit pants pattern. So I’m in process of making sure all measurements match up to me. Yes I’ve done it but I guess I messed up some where along the way. Once I get it straight I think I will add a 3 inch seam allowance. (Just kidding). I’m for sure going to look into that pattern ease. Not all was lost cause. The crotch length was excellent. Outer side seams looked good. The major problems center front & center back at least a inch too short of center. Inner leg seam not down center but more towards back. Hopefully I’ll get it. Say some prayers for me.
Take photo of you in the pants using SFD. Send them to Glenda via email. She will tell you what you need to do.
Thank you so much for the following tutorials
I really want to do one with you but I am not at all confident
But I do want to follow these if ok and I will make this
Thank you so much
Sometimes when I can't find that pattern paper at fabric stores I actually use A. wrapping paper that happens to have grid line on the inside
What fabric are you using to make your “ muslins”? Is it a knit?
I'm getting ready to cut that pattern out while watching
Sometimes it does take days to put a garment together but it's well worth it in in the end
I will be doing my video for word this pattern today and uploading obviously
Yes definitely mark down the time stamp So that you can remember where to go back
THANK YOU! I have been binge watching your videos. LIGHT BULBs went on - I sewed when I was 36B a few decades ago. I sewed LOTs of Stretch and Sew (had a store near me then) and also lined business suits and my wedding dress. Now I need to learn fitting (eg palmer and pletsch) and THEN sewing will be successful again. But first - get a bra that actually fits and that was a couple of sizes off too. I cannot get any valid measurements without that. Once I get my basic fit "block" THEN I can learn to design whatever I want. I have the master patterns for stretch and sew - boxes of them! LOL! First up - pajamas and a robe that I like with an actual sleeve (not a dolman). By the way, "our" binge watch PJ and pants weekend was really wonderful. I just watched pants fitting fundamentals and the tummy adjustment light bulb just went on! I am waiting for my actually bra that fits me to come. I also loved the closet historian - she too says PATIENCE and perseverance and several muslins on her how to make you block/sloper patterns. Yes, I will need to use fabric to do that. Once I get woven down THEN (and only then) I can deal with stretch. Otherwise, the size shifts from the pattern as you actually cut and sew. Any suggestions as to fit nice vs sure fit for learning to design from basic pattern that fits to the design you want will be helpful but that will be in a few weeks from now. Thank you so much for all that I have learned. You are an amazing teacher and even better yet a "RUclips" friend. Thanks for sewcation learning retreat! We had sew much fun! (and coffee too!) P.S. I started with no idea what size to begin with and can fabric ever even go around me? ....LOL Thanks to you, I have come a long way!
Oh, Jan! How wonderful that you are getting so much done. I used to have a stretch and sew near me too. Those were so fun to make. They always fit because they were so stretchy. Never give up!
want mens stretch and sew patterns? have 1705 pants and shorts, 1753 sport shirt, and 1711 action wear jackets. not selling but not using either.
In my eyes there is no such thing as perfect because we are who we are no matter what our size or age We are a group of human people
P.S. the reason you are so "perfect" with sewing is that you are also a quilter which actually requires that degree of exactness. I learned the lesson that a thread width on a piece of fabric actually counts when I made pleated curtains ... and was way off by the other end of the curtain so redid it. seam ripper time!
Please tell me what pattern you used for the blouse you have on. I have that material in my stash and love that blouse you have on. If you already said what it is forgive me for not hearing it. Thanks Julie
I'm in the RV now so can't look it up. I'm pretty sure the pattern is not available anymore though.
@@Joy4650B Thanks anyway Joy
If you didn't know here's a tip 1 cutting out your pattern if you just will happen to have the fabric wheel to cut with you He is that for cutting your pattern
I would like to know more about your comment that “if you had used your Sure Fit designs pattern for this, the fit would have been right the first time” (or something to that effect). Do you use your Sure Fit designs pattern to” “overlay” all other patterns and thus avoid fitting every single pattern?
No, I do not lay SFD patterns over commercial patterns. I just use commercial patterns to make different styles with my SFD patterns.
I can see your white board and I have my glasses on
I have butt shelf So sometimes I adjust for that
