Today is Oct 7, 2024.I am watching you make a blouse. You keep referring to crimping the sleeve before you sew it on to your blouse. Thank goodness for videos that you made 5 years ago! Poof there it is. How to crimp!!! Yay thank you! You are the best.
Hi Joy! I'm so glad that your video came up in my feed. Here I am watching it on Sept 27, 2024 only to hear you say that it's Sept 27, 2019 when you were recording it! 😊 I love the video. Thanks for all the tips for us newbie sewists. Greetings from Sandi in Kingston, Jamaica. 👋🪡
Opps…I must have lost my comment text, so will try to repeat how much I enjoyed seeing the 4th video on sleeve gathering/crimping, starting with one about 10-12 yrs ago! So happy to find this repeated! When you don’t record for multiple weeks, you’re missed enough that even videos from years ago are fun! Thank you.
Folks, listen to Joy, I have been sewing for 60 plus years and this is the best method ever for putting in a sleeve. it is so fast, easy a perfectly fits. Thanks, Joy.
I suggested to others that they come on over to your tutorial here to see how easy it is the "Joy/Vivmom Way" with the crimping technique!!!!💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘Happy Valentine's Day to you and your hubby, Joy!!!!
Hey Joy, Mary here! This was the first video I watched of yours, (about 2 months ago) I needed a refresher on gathering for some amazing pillow shams I’m making, I thought I’d have another look at this video. I mostly sew with knits so it’s not been something I have had to do lately. I have been sewing since I was 5 years old and my mom was the Goddess of sewing to me, but YOU had me at CRIMPED. I absolutely love you and am a huge fan girl. Thanks for always brightening my day! Especially lately, as I lost my teacher, Goddess #1 on December 8th. She was 90, but it is still so hard to let her go. Sewing is everything to me, it is such a gift and now that I am immersing myself in this world you are in its is even better. What an amazing collection of people out here that love sewing, oh my gosh!!
Hi Mary. I'm so sorry for the loss of your Mother. I lost mine less than two years ago. My Mom was 90 also. I'm not sure the crimping method would work well for a pillow sham. Crimping is when you need just light gathering as in a sleeve cap. If you need tight gathering for lots of puff, you will need to do it the old fashioned way. You can zig zag over a thin cord and pull the cord in some cases. And a lot of machines have a gathering foot. Sewing machines and sergers can do it. Thank you for your very nice comment!
Joy, thankyou, the vid for sleeves is exellent!! You are a very good teacher, you talk like a friend, not like a special made video. Please stay as you are. From Manchester UK.
Hi from England. I have 'crimped' ever since I saw Viv's tutorial some time ago, magic! Love that you said most notches on patterns don't match up. I thought that it was me doing something wrong. In fact I usually cheer when they do match up! Thank you for doing thee videos.
Watched Viv's tutorial and now yours. BOTH are wonderful! Thank you Joy and Viv! Glad you mentioned that no crimping is needed when sewing with knits - just to make sure viewers know that.
Hands down the best sleeve tutorial I have ever seen! Well understood with your clear instructions & no annoying background music. Yes, please give us more one subject sewing videos!
Well done. A neighbor from Brazil showed this technique to me about 50 years ago. I don’t remember if she had a name for it. I love this. You are the only other person that I have heard of that does this. I enjoyed watching you.
I love it Joy. Never heard of crimping. Will have to try it. Please do more of these type videos. Been sewing 40 years and you've taught me two new things in two days. Take care
Excellent tute! I've sewn for 65+ years and not seen that done that way. Is far easier and quicker than the Louise Cutting method (class I took from her) of rolling it over your hand. Her way works, but is harder for me and more time consuming to me. I will do your crimping method next opportunity. Loved it. Thanks. Love your tutes, always learn some new method of doing things. Am just getting back to garment sewing after a prolonged hiatus due to fitting frustration issues. Am enjoying your vids immensely and you have spurred me to return to garment sewing. Thanks much.
THANK YOU SO MUCH, FOR YEARS I"VE SEWEN TWO ROWS OF STITCHING. THIS MAKES IT SO MUCH FASTER. BY THE WAY. LOVE THE CREAM BLOUSE WITH. FLOWERS, VERY PRETTY, NICE PATTERN. I"M A NEW FOLLOWER, ENJOY YOU AND ALL YOU HAVE TO SHARE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND TALENT.
Thank you for your video. This was a good reminder since it has been awhile since doing garment sewing. Learn these tricks in the 80's from Dear Nancy Zieman. Nancy was my sewing teacher via seminars I attended of hers and her Sewing with Nancy videos.
My mother showed me this technique for the sleeve construction many years ago, as she worked in the sewing apparel business when I was young. Thanks for refreshing this method for me. You are a Pip!! Love your enthusiasm and charm!!!
I adore your goofiness, and am happy when a new video is on. I’ve been sewing since I was a bitty child, but I learn something new all the time on here. Thanks.
Thank you so very much for this tutorial! You’ve made something so daunting seem easy! You’re easy instructions will give me the confidence I need to “crimp” and insert a sleeve! Thank you so much!
If it crimps too much, just hold it a little looser at the back of the presser foot. Use a basting stitch. Easy to pull out if you have to redo it looser.
Joy, this was an excellent tutorial! You and I sew much the same (I too have been sewing for many decades). It is so refreshing to see that someone still enjoys sewing and helping others. We can all still learn different or new techniques to help us on our journey. You are an absolute delight, with such a "joyous" spirit that affects others in such a positive way! God bless you! Dona
I love your crimping technique...this will save me so much time...I was taught to use the two gathering stitches but switched to manually gathering using pins, dividing sleeve in half, then half in half, and half in half, etc until it "crimps' perfectly. You guessed it! I will be using your crimping technique from here on out...only took me to 70 to find you on You Tube. I have to thank Becky Thompson (PTWT ) for name dropping your name, LOL. Thank you so much for your tips!
Cute top, Joy! (Don't we all always say that because all your tops are cute!) Every single time I make a set-in sleeve I remember my grandma gently critiquing my first set-in sleeve garment where somehow I managed to get the sleeves set in by gathering the armscye instead of the sleeve head! (?) She was very nice about it but I have never forgotten her guidance. Oh, how I miss that dear woman and wish that I could sit down with her over a pot of tea for a lovely conversation. She never called it crimping either, it was always 'easing'. Thank you for the lovely video. I bet this will bless many, many new sew-ers, Joy.
Thank you Molly. Grandmas are super special. That is for sure! I miss mine. Her name was Hattie. She didn't sew but she did hand embroidery on pillow cases. I still have several of them and charish them because they were touched by her hands. She also tended a huge garden, and she was a tiny little lady. She gave birth to 12 children. Five died very young. Times were tough back then.
Thanks Joy for sharing your tricks and tips on garment sewing! I know you said that you’re not a teacher but you can be😀 I learned a lot from watching you thanks for all you do 🙏🏾
Oh my goodness! This video was FABULOUS!!You Are an excellent teacher. The videos I have seen you do are quite entertaining. But I need to learn how to sew correctly.I am totally self-taught. Thank God for RUclips. In this video, I really LEARNED something! PLEASE do more videos like this. Have you ever done any sew-alongs? Even if you did it in segments-that would be awesome! Lots of people know how to sew.But being able to effectively teach others how to do it is completely different ballgame. You have a gift. I am hoping you teach more basic skills like this. Thank you so much.
I can’t wait to try your tips! Thank you so much, Joy, for every valuable bit of advice you have given! Please keep going. You are giving me the confidence to sew up a storm. Now, if I could just learn to use my serger! Poor Viv has encouraged me over and over, but I am just afraid of ruining my garments. I can’t wait for your next series of tips. I hope Philly is doing well after her surgery, and I hope your shoulder “wound” gets better soon. ❤️❤️ Cindi
Thank you. This was very helpful. Setting in sleeves is my biggest sewing fear. I think with this tutorial I might not have as many mistakes. I’ll try this tomorrow and let you know how it worked out for me.
Greetings from Australia🦘 Hello Joy, I saw your video on set-in sleeves a couple to three weeks ago n decided to give it a try. Set-ins have been my nemesis ever since I started learning to sew some 10 years ago. On my first trial with your tutorial, I hit the jackpot n put it down to being a flook! I was making a quick few holiday garments to take away with me n decided to put in all set-in sleeves n voila, they were all perfect! Oh Joy, my excitement knew no bounds...thank you, thank you, thank you: I'm eternally grateful to you. God bless xx
That is wonderful to hear! If you do get a fussy one, the sleeve cap probably has TOO MUCH EASE in it. You should not have over an inch -- 1/2" on the back and 1/2" on the front. Of course, gathered or pleated sleeve caps would be different and meant to have a lot of fullness.
Great video, Joy, thank you! I did watch Viv and was amazed at how simple it seemed, but I have been sewing knits only recently, so not tried it out. Kind regards from Penny In Liverpool 🇬🇧😊💕
That was great. I had seen Vivmom do it but couldn't find her video when I needed to review it. So it's very helpful that you titled this one with the specific content! Thank you!
I love this tutorial, and can't wait to give it a try on my next woven sleeve insertion!! Thank you! If you get a few crimps or folds that show through on the outside of the sleeve, I have learned that most times you don't have to take out the entire sleeve, only about an inch or so, then re-stitch it, and that usually fixes the issue. I learned that the hard way! 🤣
Thank you Joy! Watched this early sat morning my birthday !! What a fantastic gift, watching my friend joy. I have to say that top you’re wearing looks so pretty on you. Can you remember the pattern number. And the fabric also looks amazing on you. Great choice Thank you so much for your gift of knowledge you give so freely 💕🍎
Thanks for this video, Joy. I haven’t sewn clothes in decades. But I am about to start sewing my blouses as I can’t find what I like in the stores or catalogs. I wear 100% cotton or else I have horrific static cling. I constantly shock myself when the humidity starts turning dry here. I have learned so much from you and Viv that I am actually looking forward to making some of my clothes. I’m a quilter at heart but I’m willing to give this another try. Thanks!
Joy, I really like both your blouses you are wearing. I especially like the one you are wearing in the tutorial. How you positioned the design to be on the neckline and to one side is very pretty! Thanks for a very helpful video! Take care & God Bless.
Love your method of sewing in a sleeve. I've mostly sewn in the sleeve before doing the side seams and sleeve seams so that the material lays flatter. Then doing the sleeve seam and side seam in one go. Much easier for me.
Thank you for sharing your new iron info. I too have been frustrated with irons not holding up. I even looked at the Laura star ironing system. Wow they are pricey. The one you have looks impressive at $241.00 about 1/2 the price of the Laura star I was looking at.
I first leaned about the single notch and the double notch last year from one of your much earlier videos but I still struggle with sleeves a bit. This video was full of great information, thank you for demonstrating this. I can't wait to try crimping on my next sleeve.
I love this technique!! I have always been able to get my sleeves in, but with two rows of gathering. I can't wait to try this easier and quicker method. Thanks much! Oh,. . . and I love your top with the cowl. . .. pattern?
I used to dread setting sleeves until VivMom had that crimping tip in one of her videos - it's like magic! It makes woven sleeve setting as easy as knits. LOVE that fall fabric! Good colors for you. I need to get some more clothes made for vacation, but I'm on a soap making kick right now and can't tear myself away from it. 😄 Happy sewing! 🍂🍃🍁
I wish there was a choice above Like. This is the greatest tip I've ever seen. Thank you so much for sharing . I've bookmarked this video so I may reference it again when needed. Keep the great hints coming please. I wish you continue success with your sewing.
I can't believe I've been fooling with those 2 rows of gathering stitches all these years! Why didn't somebody show me this long time ago. Thank you! BTW love the cowl neck top.
Thanks Joy. I have been using this method of "gathering" the sleeve since our friend Nancy Zieman showed us how to do this some twenty years ago. It always works and I love , love , love it. It works for gathering the waist on children's dresses as well.
Thanks for showing how to “crimp” I’ve never done that before. As soon as I remove my embroidery arm from my machine I am going to play around wit that technique.
I taught sewing for years and we always called it “ease stitching”. Never heard it called crimping. It is a great technique for a Set- in sleeve not one with full gathers or puff sleeve. It helps to put the sleeve over a sleeve board and steam where you did the row of ease stitching. Love your videos and inspiration!!
Hi, this is my first time finding you and boy am I glad. Someone on another channel recommended you. I am in the middle of making a shirt now and needed these instructions. Thank you again, I look forward to viewing your other videos
Yay! You are a jewel. Ask and you shall receive! Now when I sew my dress I can bring up this video and follow it step by step. Thank you sweet Lady. Sleeves were always my downfall. I will let you know how it goes when I do it. Hopefully as smooth as yours went in. Again, Thank you, Thank you, Thankyou!
Thank you, Joy! That was really enlightening: the crimping part. I love that Bernina! I have the patchwork 230 that's more of a beginner's machine but I love it and it works perfectly. So good to see you again! :*
Thank you so much for this video! I have been sewing for decades but always did the gathering stitches- such a chore. This looks so simple. I will try it this weekend.
Joy, you are just a delight! Thank you for the crimping lesson. I bought Fall fabric today for a blouse so I will be crimping the sleeves! Looking forward to another lesson!
That is so KOOL, I've never seen it before but I can tell it's going to be a slam dunk. I'm going to make a blouse this weekend instead of binding a quilt just to try the crimping method.
Joy thank you so so much, for crimped show, I love the leaves blouse, sorry I wander off, I’ve never had a problem with a sleeve, feeeew I’m getting old, looooosing my marbles, or out of bractice
This is amazing! I’ve put in countless sleeves over the years, always using the basting stitch method. Never again! Ty! By the way, what pattern did you use for your cowl neck top? Beautiful fabric and a cute top.
Today is Oct 7, 2024.I am watching you make a blouse. You keep referring to crimping the sleeve before you sew it on to your blouse. Thank goodness for videos that you made 5 years ago! Poof there it is. How to crimp!!! Yay thank you! You are the best.

Great explanation Joy. This VLOG was one where seeing the sewing was beneficial, especially for new sewists. Beautifully done!

Hello Joy, I saw your video on set-in sleeves a couple to three weeks ago n decided to give it a try. Set-ins have been my nemesis ever since I started learning to sew some 10 years ago. Great video! Brought back those early years of sewing when I used to hate setting in sleeves because I almost always put them in backwards lol
Me too
Thanks for showing..!! That makes it so much earlier...!! 🌞 💗
What kind of magic is this? You are the Crimping Queen.
Wow! That works on all machines? I just have singer machine. Thanks good tip.
Thank you!
Content in the title really helps 😊
Thank you for the sleeve tutorial!

Thank you so much for your gift of knowledge you give so freely 💕🍎
Honestly this was a really good tutorial. I've never done crimping but you can bet I will now!
Absolutely fabulous instructional video Joy!! Teaching is your calling. Well done!
Thanks!
Very helpful and I love the top you have on with the cowl neck. Beautiful!
I love it too! I'd love to watch you make that neck piece!
You and Vivmom are my very favorite people. Awsome. I will now be doing the crimping method from now on. Amazing. Thank you.
Oh,. . . and I love your top with the cowl. . .. pattern?

Oh boy! Thanks so much for this video. You give clear instructions, which is so important.😁
I wish there was a choice above Like. This is the greatest tip I've ever seen. Thank you so much for sharing . I've bookmarked this video so I may reference it again when needed. Keep the great hints coming please.
I wish you continue success with your sewing.
Excellent. Please do more single task videos. Thanks for sharing your talent.
Thank you so much for the tutorial. I appreciate you.
Thank you, you are welcome.
THANK YOU!! This was so helpful. Keep your tutorials coming!! Love Love Love
Brilliant demonstration on how to work a perfect sleeve cap ...... wish I had known this decades ago... I am off to try it out now... thanks Joy!
First a big THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge 😘!!! And second, please make more videos with tips like this one. I learned a lot! 👍💯!!!!
I love the color blouse:)
Awesome tutorial. Thank you. Wish I had your enthusiasm. Love the cowl neck top,you have on.
I can't believe I've been fooling with those 2 rows of gathering stitches all these years! Why didn't somebody show me this long time ago. Thank you! BTW love the cowl neck top.
Oh BTW I just put a waistline facing on a skirt. I used your tip of using a narrow zigzag stitch to understitch. Worked so well! Love it!
Thanks Joy. I have been using this method of "gathering" the sleeve since our friend Nancy Zieman showed us how to do this some twenty years ago. It always works and I love , love , love it. It works for gathering the waist on children's dresses as well.
I always dreaded the gathering on the sleeve :( I'll be crimping from now on ;) Thank you!
Thanks for showing how to “crimp” I’ve never done that before. As soon as I remove my embroidery arm from my machine I am going to play around wit that technique.
Thank you so much Joy. I have never seen this technique before. I will be using this!!!
OH MY GOSH! Why did I never know this technique? Thank you so much!

Another perfectly explained step. Thank you. I understood everything in the previous video.

I remember when my mother did her sleeves and gathered skirts that way back in the 60s. Thanks for sharing

Thank you, Joy! That was really enlightening: the crimping part. I love that Bernina! I have the patchwork 230 that's more of a beginner's machine but I love it and it works perfectly. So good to see you again! :*
Yup! First time I saw this was by Nancy Ziemann. Pretty slick trick! Thanks for the reminder!
Joy, I love it when you do a sewing tutorial. Do more.
That is so KOOL, I've never seen it before but I can tell it's going to be a slam dunk. I'm going to make a blouse this weekend instead of binding a quilt just to try the crimping method.
