Thanks so much for including EVERYTHING you can do to make back adjustments! It has been so confusing all the different things that can be done--- Your generosity explaining all this is greatly appreciated!
This was an incredibly useful tutorial. I have never had this explained so thoroughly and yet understandable. Thank you.
I think I watched over a dozen videos to learn only some of what you covered in less than 20 minutes and even injected a little humor along the way. I appreciate how graciously you share your knowledge and your life. Please keep the camera rolling for your avid fans.
Wow! I learn so much from your videos Joy.
I am finally seeing my 'body shape' as it really is and through your 'Fit Corrections' I can make the necessary adjustments to my patterns.
My garment disappointments have been because I didn't realize the reasons.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for your tutorials, you make it so plain for people starting to get a better fit with their clothes, xx
Oh my, this was wonderful to see! Thank you SO much. I've never had any formal lessons and I only sew for others because I got so frustrated since my clothes never fit so I could wear them out in public! I'm off to sew for my self. You have given me real hope! WAHOO!
I am so excited and happy to know this. Remember though, NEVER give up! Every failure is just a lesson to use on the next garment. Start with a simple tee, and make it 10 times if you have to. Best wishes.
I followed these steps and my 2nd sure fit top muslin fits and looks great. I could not believe how smooth the back is. The round back and sway back really did the trick. Now to go get some fabric and make the real thing. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I needed All of these - pleased to know I’m not the only one. Your instructions are SO good!
Thank you! You are so generous in sharing all your sewing tips, etc. What a blessing.

Joy, thank you SO MUCH for posting this! I'm so sick and tired of my shoulders sliding down and showing my bra straps. This neckline fix is just what I needed!!
You are very welcome Mrs. Becky. I can't believe you have that problem because you actually HAVE shoulders. LOL
LOLOL. Just noticed this video is a year old!
I love the way you explain how to make the pattern change. Very clear a precise. Thank you.
This must be the 4th time I have referred back to this video regarding the front and back neckline gaps/poufs. It works.
This was very informative and helpful. Thanks so much for sharing it. Your clothes always look very nice on you and fit you nicely.
This video has been so helpful that I might actually like making myself blouses! Thank you for sharing all your tips!
Joy, you are amazing. Thank you for all your helpful hints and quick tutorials. Bless you! (Now I'm going to pull out a couple of my patterns. LOL)
Thanks for showing how that's done. You make it seem doable Joy even for me so I might actually try to make myself something in the autumn..😀☘
Joy, I wish I could give you 5 thumbs up on the tutorial. 👍👍👍👍👍 Awesome!
Some people are natural teachers. You poke fun at yourself and that makes people comfortable so they will listen better.
Thank you so, so much! I have two, possibly three of these issues. I’ve seen these adjustments before but it wasn’t clear to me just what it was correcting. I can’t wait to try these out! ♥️
Thank you so much it’s made sense now, about the back. 💖💖💖
Thank you so much,Joy. You are a fantastic teacher! I asked the question, and you helped me with all my fitting problems.i just don't understand why you have trouble keeping friends. I would love to have a friend like you. Thanks for answering my question so thoroughly. God bless you.
Great video! I now know that I need to trace the shoulders to get the proper fit for sloping and shorter width. Thanks so much.
You explained that really well. ❤️
Thank you. Love how easy you explained everything
I love your tutorials.
Joy, you are a blessing to us all.Thank you for all that you do, God bless you.
This is an excellent explanation of how to do these adjustments. Thank you so much Joy.
Thanks, Joy. You are so great.
Thank you so much for this video. I am getting back into sewing and watching this video has given me a lot of useful information.
Joy, I have shoulders that roll forward which requires an adjustment. I had never heard of this before but boy it makes a huge difference.
Thank you Joy, keep doing it.
Great tips! Thank you!
Very well done. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. It is very appreciated.
I always enjoy listening to your happy way of talking and down to earth comments even if I don't need the hint of the day. Keep it up.
Joy, Joy, Joy - You are so good at explaining things! Great tips and tricks to make the perfect blouse. I don’t sew clothes, but I could do this part of it now. 😋
🌺🌺Have a Joyful Week🌺🌺
great tutorial... thank you
Very helpful Joy, thank you!
Fabulous video! Thank you!
I must have missed this vlog. This was great. Btw, can you talk about what you do to pants patterns to make them fit?
I've made LOTS of "muslins". Try the Jalie Jean Pull-Up. I have had great success with that. I'm on my fifth pair.
You did it again. How can you make things sound so simple. You should compile all of your clothing sewing videos and sell them on CD. I'd buy instantly. Thank you!
Thank you, Louise! To me, they seem so sloppy and poorly done. As long as I get the point across, I guess it is okay.
Thanks for this! A neckline that lays nice and flat makes all the difference to the appearance of a garment. I've attempted to make a similar type of adjustment, but I was doing it wrong!! Looking forward to trying it this way.
Thankyou so much for this Joyful Joy
My goodness what a brilliant video, like a light bulb moment, is it possible for you to show how to do a full bust adjustment using this method, many thanks
Thank you so much Joy.. loved it... you are a great teacher..
Great video, thanks Joy.
LOTS of great info here Joy, thanks so much!
Thanks for the instruction. I didn't know any of this.
So informative! Thank you
Thanks for showing this way to correct the gapping problem at the neck. I do have a question, though. Why does it follow that if you correct the gap at the neck that the side dart should be changed? Just trying to understand. Thanks in advance.
Just so the pattern will lie flat.
Very good tutorial
Joy, I just found you a couple of days ago have been binge watching your videos. I’m learning so much. Thank you! I have all of the same sizing issues you have...bony top, rounded back, sway back and sloping right shoulder. The sloping shoulder has always caused my clothes to hang off center because it pulls my neck area to the right. I’m still confused about how to fix it. You said you cut your pattern out the same for both sides then lower the shoulder and arm hole on the right side. I don’t understand how that would work after you have cut it out. Do you have to trace your pattern as a full front & back, lower the the right side then not cut on the fold? I hope this makes sense.
It is easy to fix the shoulder AFTER the fabric is cut out. I come down 1/4" on front and back (that makes 1/2") below the seamline at the outer shoulder edge and draw a diagonal line from there up to the original seamline at the neck shoulder edge. Then I cut the armhole down 1/2" at the side seam edge and angle it smoothly up to about the notch to nothing. I will show it in my next video.
Now this makes sense to me. Thank you! I was thinking that I would need to cut a square around the arm hole and lower it down. I wasn’t recognizing that it automatically would be lowered with shoulder adjustment and then I could cut fabric at the bottom. You are so generous with sharing your knowledge. I hope I get proficient enough to play your kindness forward someday.❤️
I just came back to watch these tips again! They are soooo good! I was going to ask if you do these changes right off the bat, no matter what? Thanks again for this info! I’m thinking I need all these too! 😉
Yes, I do do them right away in every commercial pattern. since they are all the same, and my body is always the same. That is why I sew. I like things to fit me.
Joy Bernhardt Thanks Joy! It’s great you have all these little tweaks figured out!
Joy Bernhardt I meant to ask too....do you find all the commercial patterns similar in sizing? So you’d pick the same size across the board? (Most of the time)
Yes. And I buy them by my upper bust size. Pants: my hip size.
After you have made these adjustments, do you then need to make adjustments to the bottom hem? Looks to me like the front and back will not match up for the hem.
If your hems are not correct after those adjustments, you did NOT need them. If the adjustments are required, there is too much fabric or too little fabric and the hem is off if you do not make the corrections.
Hi Joy,would you be willing to share how you do a rounded back and sway back adjustment when you make a Kim swing top... you have helped me enormously me being a beginner I appreciate you thanks
Reva
Joy you do such a good job explaining the adjustments to patterns. I make patterns for home decor so when I teach someone how to make patterns it’s not that easy to explain what’s in your head. How did you figure out how much to take out of the pattern. Is it trial and error on every pattern.
Joy, thank you so much for your willingness to teach. I absolutely love they way you explain the methods. I have a question on bustlines, I have none! Lol , although, in have very broad shoulders so often times I can cross my arms well but the front of the shirt is to big in the just, I look awful. Can you explain how to reduce the just or darts.
Dee Murphy
Joy, you are filled with joy!😊Great method. But what if I have a french dart in the front? How should I manipulate that neckline gap? Thank you so much!
exactly the same. Slice to the apex and make the french dart a little bigger.
+Joy Bernhardt Ok, thank you! English is not my native language so I'm not sure if I made myself understood. I have a dart starting from the waist and going to the bust, but it doesn't have a pointy edge at the waistline, the pattern is sliced on a 90 degree angle. So when I cut " to, but not through", I mess up the existing dart and create a void under the armhole. 😞
I'll see if I can draw it for you. Give me a few days.
Oh how I wish you lived across the street! Ever thought about opening a store in the Pacific NW? We have Olympic Pharmacy, but no one loves them (teehee). I had my kid trace my outline. Wow, no wonder I can't get my dress kit to fit in the shoulders!!
What do you do with the back for someone who has a protruding back on one side and not the other?
Ty
Hi Joy Thank you for your wonderfully explained tutorials. For me, On commercial patterns the chest needs to be reduced by about 2" on the half pattern 4" in total. Yes I have narrow shoulders and my straps fall off, hence I sew my own bras.
Could you tell me, does your gapping neck line adjustment alter the with in the chest at all?
I need your advise, I need to do all the adjustments in the back as you have kindly demonstrated. I need the sway back adjustment and the length added to the shoulder blade height, as I have a deep arm hole. I Only need about a quarter inch removed per side in the neck as this is the only round or curve I have there. However, there is still something wrong with the shoulder, I assume. As my dresses ride up and try to choke me. I like your draw your shoulder on the wall, how do I transfer this to my paper pattern and how will I know how much to adjust my pattern. Further I have a straight on the fold pattern. I cannot work this out!? I hope I have explained properly. Thank you Lynda
Narrow chest sorry!
Are you sure you have enough circumference around your chest? If the garment is too small there, it will try to ride up to a smaller area.
You hold your pattern up to the shoulder drawing. Line up center front or center back and compare the paper pattern shoulder to the drawn shoulder on the wall. If you move the shoulder tip down, you will need to lower the armhole area equally. Hope that makes sense.
Joy Bernhardt Hi Joy thank you for your reply.
I shall double check. It literally feels like I should put a weight in the front hem of my dress (like a Chanel Jacket) to hold it down. I will compare the shoulders and measurements. It's rather difficult fitting myself as nobody I know sews.
My husband tries, I might add unsuccessfully. Lol. Love your tutorials. Enjoy your day.
Joy Bernhardt Hi Joy So We did the shoulder drawing. My front pattern is correct, but as suspected the back needs to be changed. I have chevron drag lines wth a point at my CB neckline going down to the side waist seams. Which the shoulder angle adjustment will fix.
I need to increase the height of the neck point. When I increase this and adjust the pattern correctly at the neck and shoulder angle, which looks wonderful. It distorts the rest of my pattern. It looks all skew! How do I redraw this? Do you have any advise?
I am battling because I need to do every adjustment / tuneup but cannot work out in which order to do them? Please be so kind to assist thank you Lynda
Lynda, have you put a round back correction in the upper back of your pattern?
I am new to really sewing like you do. This was a great tutorial but can I do this even if the pattern does not have a bust dart? Like I said I am new to this. I have only sewn simple stuff.
Depending on your shape, you may need to put a bust dart in it. You could cut the front neck over to the armhole if there is not a bust dart.
Joy Bernhardt thank you!!!
Thanks for your alterations demo. I have a question. When adjusting for the front neckline, you increased the size of the bust dart. Doesn’t that increase the fullness (space for bust)? I thought the breadth of bust dart in the side seem was relative to the fullness of the “bump”! Small bumps need small darts, and big bumps need big darts.
No. It doesn't do that at all. It is just absorbing the "dart" that was in the wrong place -- if that makes sense.
Thanks for replying. I will work on absorbing the concept. You explain things very well.
To, but not thru. Funny, you said it the other way. I understood what you meant, but others may not have
I KNOW! I heard it when I played it back. I said it both ways in the video. I say a lot of "crooked" things these days. Ugh!
Joy how to measure the back? I could find that video yo said. Help me please. Do another video for all of us. Thanks

Love this video. If you had limited funds, which "Sure Fit Designs " purchase would you make and would it be possible to learn from home without a class?
The Dress Kit. There are over a hundred FREE videos at Sure-fit Designs for you to watch. You have to be patient and follow the instructions, but it is worth it.
Love your videos!! I was wondering, how do you hang your rulers on your wall? I really don't want to hang peg board.
Don't blame you. I use used sewing machine needles. They work great and leave very tiny holes. Put them in with the flat side up. Easy to turn the needle so flat side is up.
Thanks Joy! Never would have thought of that. Great idea👌
How do you do this with a knit shirt?
Same for knit and woven fabric.
You know I guess I want time you talk really fast you make me laugh but you keep it so simple fly without a whole bunch of Gobley goo and makes it so much easier to understand. I think you
You are welcome.
Should be e looked that comment over. I meant bust not just.

Joy - Couldn’t find your email no where. Have you seen the Edyta Sitar new quilt pattern? Here’s a link to the trailer at Fat Quarter Shop. It’s gorgeous!

If the link don’t work go to their RUclips and you will see it. It can be done appliqué too. Thought of you when I saw it. Hugs! 💝
I went there and I saw it. Very nice. Thanks so much for pointing it out.
Joy Bernhardt You are welcome. This was the only way I knew to tell you. Happy Week. Hugs! 💝
