I don’t have any problem with my new Rheem water heater. You need to purges the air out by holding the knob in Pilot position for at least 3-5 minutes then light it up . Plus you need to have a gas sediment trap .
.......I highly suspect there are some unofficial Rheem comments here........Some have disappeared and others I deleted in anger =).........A year later and I've recovered some sanity and realized there might be some validity in crushing the pilot line to adjust it but it seems highly suspect..........I would love for Rheem to Officially comment on whether this is legit or not........So far this water heater has worked fine and performed well...........
The exact same crimp in the gas line was present, but after holding the knob down on "Pilot" for 90 SECONDS and hitting the ignitor five times the pilot light came on.
I installed a Platinum Plus 5 weeks ago and the start up was easy and it's been working great. Let's see how it holds up. PS Everything is made cheap these days. They're not built to last but they should at least meet warranty. I replaced my existing GE 10 year warranty one that lasted 22 years with the Rheem. Surely not going to see that kind of longevity again.
Your lighting technique is not correct. You didn't read the instructions. Once the knob is turned to pilot you need to hold it down for 90 seconds then you hit the ignitor button 5 times. You didn't show that.
I had same thing. It won't light holding down and clicking, so then I follow the instruction to hold down for 90secs and then push ignitor for about 10 times. Lo and behold, pilot lights up.
Man I feel your pain brother! I hate home depot and lowes...After replacing a well pump twice because of defective parts I go to a plumbing supply house and pay a little more for the better equipment if it is a big install. Did you call the number on the sticker on the heater that said to not return this to the place of purchase..Rheem might have sent someone out...I doubt it but maybe. You know they put the defects back on the shelf for the next guy...never buy something from HD if it is taped shut or looks like it was opened....it will be broken or missing something, trust me.
The number on the water heater is disconnected =)........Online there's a form to fill out and they will get back to you......Really bad sign......I will definitely go to a plumbing supply house next time.........Just found 1 thats reasonably close.......I was thinking writing in permanent marker defective on the heater.........After the last visit I'm really tempted to return the incompetence and call and say the heaters are at the curb ready for pickup and then hang up ......=)

Garbage 2 weeks after install pilot went out first gas valve control change, then burner assembly changed saw burner was barely screwed on and waiting on TRD replacement.
No more Rheem water heaters for me! I've had 5 Rheem water heaters break down on me in the past 12 months in our 15 apartment units. Rheem customer service is HORRIBLE! They will try to wiggle out of the warranty as many times as they can and sell you expensive parts for the water heaters. I've already replaced 4 of the water heaters with Bradford White. NEVER buying Rheem products again!
Yes, I too feel your pain. Installed a brand new Rheem electric WH for a widow lady and her 2 children that had been without hot water for 8 days (couldn't afford to buy one). Our church group reached out and I purchased and installed a new Rheem WH but it would not heat due to an incorrect "module" that was installed at the factory (per Rheem Customer Service). Rheem wanted to send out a new module which would take 4 -5 days and then ONLY a licensed plumber could install it. Took it back to Home Depot and went to Lowe's and purchased a brand new A. O. Smith WH and it worked straight away. No more Home Depot water heaters, and especially NO MORE Rheem water heaters.
Trying to finalize my pending purchase of a water heater.....from Lowes to Home Depot.....noticed that a LOT of Rheems (both different sizes) are displayed and ready to be sold....but I was curious to notice the MASS amount of boxes NOT being sold.....A tech on another video did say that Rheems was not a good choice.
"4 Bad Water Heaters In A Row..." That's funny because I had 3 calls over the past 6 months to service these water heaters. All 3 were less than 10 years old and all 3 had the same issue: Water leaking from that cheap plastic drain valve.

The gas control valves are the weak point of all of these water heaters. The more safety they add to these water heaters the more things that will go wrong.
This last one was the performance plus (9 year warranty) vs your returns that were the performance line (6 year warranty). Is there a big difference between the two? What about the performance platinum version (12 year warranty)? Thanks for documenting

I've placed an order for a replacement chamber sensor on 7 month old water heater and it's been almost a month and there is still no update on my order so I had to cancel. I will NEVER buy or own Rheem EVER again.
Just so you know, those “crushed” pilot tubes are not defective. They are intentionally crimped down at the factory to restrict flow to the pilot to adjust the size and efficiency of the pilot flame. You may find one here and there that is not crimped, but that is only because the size of the pilot flame was good during testing at the factory and didn’t require restriction. The way that you attempted to light the water heater will always cause you to smell gas - and it wasn’t coming from the crimp in the pilot tube. Also, adjusting the temperature and pressure relief valve to a vertical position is always part of a professional installation - they are never perfectly plumb on any brand of water heater.
Yeah, I have a 14-month-old Rheem unit with the same bend in the tube. Ours worked fine until yesterday, but now the pilot won't relight. I think that, in our case, it is the over-temp sensor blocking the thermocouple voltage, but the technicians are coming out today to determine the issue.

Hi there I just saw your video and it’s that’s unfortunate that the first pilot line was crushed and leaking. It was a frustrating experience for you and many others that have had WH problems from Home Depot. It’s great you finally got it done and hot water back in the house. I know from experience Home Depot is a pain to deal with when it comes to Water heaters and having employees and management be disrespectful and condescending shows poorly on their character. I just checked my WH and it’s a Bradford white that I purchased from a plumbing supply house which higher end professional merchandise and it has the same slight saddle style bend in it so it may be that it’s part of the engineering for the installation side of the burner plate assembly. I hope that helps others in the same situation as I will also be mindful to look for a crushed tubes when unboxing the next WH. Take care and good luck to all.
I have just drained my replacement tank because the thermocouple is not giving enough juice to keep the burner lit, AND the tank is leaking onto the burner
I would just buy the part that's broken and replace it. Not worth my time to remove the whole water heater and bring it back, try to get some compensation. BTW mine was dented on one side on the very bottom.
Purchased the exact same one just a week ago. Hooked it up and the T&P valve and the water drain valve leaked. They shipped me the parts but a plumber has yet to contact me to install them. I think we should start a class-action lawsuit.
Yeah, I feel ya, bud! I had a total of 3 GE brand gas water heaters from Home Depot; all three had the tank rupture within 2-4 years of installation. Then, they started selling Rheem, and I thought, oh, good! Now THIS one should last finally. Nope! Two years after installation, I got that dreaded 8 red flashes one day, SO....I had to drain the tank and remove the original electronic thermocouple and I replaced it. Two years later, same damned thing. Now, just today, I had a bad pilot/ignition assembly, so I had to pull the main burner out and replace that; an easy enough fix, but infuriating to me nonetheless, because I remember when water heaters and furnaces lasted damned near 30 years before needing replacement; whatever happened to QUALITY like THAT?! I replaced my furnace over 22 years ago, and I had no issues with it, ever; I installed another new one about two years ago, and all I've had with it is trouble! I am so Goddamned sick and tired of this planned obsolescence!!!
I just bought one hooked it up and the pilot light would stay on only but the burner would not catch. It was like very low gas going in. So I went home trying to figure out why??? I’m 50 miles from install location. I will go back tomorrow and check that line you caught? Oh yea the stupid red light came on after 15 minutes. Thanks for positing video!!
I got a Rheem water heaters same exact one just not the gas one but still I have gotten 2 an both are leaking from the bottom.. smh and both from home depo
Could you light it with a match? That's what I would have done and then look for why there was no gas. It looks like someone crimped it and maybe they are having working condition problems in the factory. I was an appliance tech, so I know a little more. Always look for the simple things first.
It might have lit with an open flame but it probably would have been too weak to stay lit under ignition of the main burner or piezo generator(thermocouple basically) ........
It's not totally propitary parts only from Rheem you can't buy the $10 part have to replace the entire assembly and since it's defective will fail again
Home Depot only sells the water heater, they have nothing to do with warranty or service. Buying a rake or a water heater at HD is the same thing. If you have issues you have to contact Rheem. That's where the pain funnel begins.
I don’t have any problem with my new Rheem water heater. You need to purges the air out by holding the knob in Pilot position for at least 3-5 minutes then light it up . Plus you need to have a gas sediment trap .

And the phone number took me to a life alert person not customer service? Took me 5 times to connect. Unfortunately it was after hours? 🤦🏼♂️
mine worked fine. hold it down until it lights and then keep holding it until the light flashes. pressing it like that does nothing
watch the vid again and maybe you'll understand......if you still don't understand SEEK HELP immediately
I had to press the button about 20 times but it eventually lit. Be patient.
Did you call the tech service number while you were in front of the water heater and having problems?
YES....Give it a try yourself......it's out of service....
Put this one in 3 week ago all ok
Call a plumber next time
I got a Rheem water heaters same exact one just not the gas one but still I have gotten 2 an both are leaking from the bottom.. smh and both from home depo
What was the manufacture date if you can recall. Or the month you were installing with leaky bottom
Could you light it with a match? That's what I would have done and then look for why there was no gas. It looks like someone crimped it and maybe they are having working condition problems in the factory. I was an appliance tech, so I know a little more. Always look for the simple things first.
It might have lit with an open flame but it probably would have been too weak to stay lit under ignition of the main burner or piezo generator(thermocouple basically) ........
dude that sucks!
should be an easy fix, though, right?
It's not totally propitary parts only from Rheem you can't buy the $10 part have to replace the entire assembly and since it's defective will fail again
@@thomasmorris302 that's great! It's about time they stopped using proprietary parts.
Mistake#1 - You bought a hot water heater from Home Depot.
Home Depot only sells the water heater, they have nothing to do with warranty or service. Buying a rake or a water heater at HD is the same thing. If you have issues you have to contact Rheem. That's where the pain funnel begins.
