It's brilliant! I downtune my premier royal ace 4 sometimes as a bd in uber small cafe venues. You need a robust snare stand though. The mapex falcon is really good and a long as you position the weight of the snare directly over a leg, it shouldn't wobble. I then use a 'drum mat' and my rubber coated tama cobra pedal so the pedal doesn't move wherever you put it. This would be for playing heel down
I love this. I've had a TD17-KVX for almost 4 years and the KD-10 bass module has recently started to not register softer hits. I did some tweaking and such; all to no avail and was starting to think I might just have to shell out the money for another KD-10 and voila... this pops up in my feed. Thank you very much. I'm sure this is the way I'm going to go.
Awhh this is excellent news. Yes is also recommend putting some material under the mesh head like an old t shirt to help with a more life like bd feel. Good luck and I'm glad the video helped!
The washer that they give you, with the foam top, that sits below the controller cylinder, makes it so that there is a remaining 1 mm of "mush" in your final pedal push, leading to the hi-hat problem. If that washer has no foam on it, things work fine. You are a killer drummer and an innovative human.
Hello Emma! Wow this is great! I Bought the TD-17 last year and the noise of the Kick was an issue, I bought NE-10 Noise Eater and it was not enough (neighbors complainte) to kill the vibration , I build a stage sitting on tennis balls an that worked fine for my neighbors but not enough for the tick tick noise (neighbors complainte) lol . So, Here you are with that trick, this is awesome, I will definitely do that also the Hi-Hat problem, I have that too. BIG BIG Thanks to put your video online, Cheers from Montreal Canada :-)
Awh this is amazing! Thanks for your feedback and I'm glad your new set up is working out for you. Yes those noise waters don't really work do they? It's the low frequency sounds that travel further because of the wavelength so changing the kick surface cuts out a lot. I hope your set up continues to improve! Thanks for the kind comments! 😁
I haven't even watched the video yet, but the one thing I immediately noticed was that you tuned your sound a fair bit. I don't know what it is, but just about every channel is obsessed with demoing the default kits, and they sound about as great as default kits ever sounded with Roland. Like, enjoyable for playing and everything, but none of what I heard sounded nearly as tight as yours - including articulation curves and what-have-yous. I keep hearing the old argument against e-drums for so long, but even prolific RUclipsrs often don't come close what my (now really old) TD-4 could achieve with a fair bit of tuning. Sounded really nice for sure.
Very informative video. I have a Roland TD-9 and I upgraded the kick tower to the KD10 but noise, feel, and the wobble are annoying. I am considering getting a newer e-kit and may go the Yamaha route. Considering Roland is the most expensive e-kit brand they have certain issues they should have solved. And adding pads to the Yamaha would be cheaper than buying Roland pads.
Wow, so helpful! Thank you! And lovely playing. A real joy to watch you play the instrument, and then to hear how you adjusted it to work well for you.
I never would have thought a snare as a bass would be quieter than the bass pedestal. Amazing job! Thanks for being so thorough on the explanation. Also, you're a fantastic drummer!
I had the same issue with the kick. (AND we had a new baby in the house, so it needed to be solved .) My solution was screwing down some fiberboard and adding a thick layer of foam rubber on top of that, then I threw an old rubber car floormat on top of that and I lag-bolted the kick-tower on that with and used heavy duty rubber washers and its been behaving with a nice bit of silence ever since. And the sucker doesn't move a bit. That was 2 years ago. Last week's project was raising the module 2 feet so the aforementioned child can't mess up my settings anymore.
Hi Emma. Thank you very much for your tip. It really worked in my set-up, but its missing a little bit more of accurracy. There is a little bit of latency. I wonder if you could share your hi-hat settings ? Please! Thank you very much! Regards.
I recently got a td17 kvx2 and while I love it, I have to say the bass pad is pretty loud and it has a ringing sound afer hitting it, I saw this video and I immediately knew this was the solution and upgrade, there's only one thing I'd love to get a bit more detail and it's how to keep the snare drum turned bass drum in its place
Hi there, sorry for the late reply. I would say this is about weight. Make sure you have a sturdy snare drum stand. I'm using a mapex falcon here. Make sure the stand is on carpet or a non slip surface and the same goes for the pedal. My Tama Iron cobra is already ruberised underneath so I've never had a problem. Some cajon pedals come with one of these so you might be able to incorporate this around the snare stand in some way? www.dv247.com/en_GB/GBP/Fame-FCPHS-1-Cajon-Pedal-Halteschiene/art-DRU0040775-000?campaign=GShopping/GB&ProgramUUID=HADAqJarPzAAAAFlea9yjI.G&campaign=GShopping/UK&ProgramUUID=HADAqJarPzAAAAFlea9yjI.G&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAnrOtBhDIARIsAFsSe51m1QmLKeovH82rfSchnNVneu8mrI5nNCBPRxRZX-kzR_S-ZW6C2uAaAj4VEALw_wcB
i asked my question about the VH-10 for a remote hi hat stand, because i intend to play the roland kit from a wheelchair. i have challenges moving from the wheelchair to a drum throne. therefore i plan to set the drumset to be lower than the average set up. the VH-10 on a standard hi hat stand, might sit a little to high for my comfort in playing. a remote hi hat stand might offer more flexibility. looking forward to your thoughts
Hi Gordon, thanks for your comment.Yes the VH10 will be fine on a remote stand. It's just the motion sensor unit that you put on top of your remote hi hat the same as any other hi hat stand. Just bear in mind that you might be limited with the length of the TRS cable that comes with the kit , especially if you are thinking of using open handed style. But any normal TRS female to male extension cable should be fine for that. Good luck with your setup!
My hh is almost non existent in the mix. Even when turning the volume to 6. Is the sound on your demo the sound from the Roland or through some other mix. Your set sounds amazing and hh is bright and present
My high hat is starting to give me trouble. The rim hits aren't triggering around the entire cymbal. Had to turn it half way around to find a sweet spot where it triggers. Already replaced one of the crash cymbals.
This was very informative, thank you. I have the same issue with the VH10 hihat with the td27 module. When you say you calibrate it, what exactly are you doing to the hi-hat to make the little bar move on the calibration screen? Are you adjusting the offset screw or something? I'm new to this, so I'm not sure how to get it properly adjusted. Thank you so much!
Yes it's the offset screw. This is what makes it tricky as there's a lack of precision. Screw the hi hat up so that the notch underneath the hi hat that changes the position is all the way up inside the clutch. Then gradually start turning all in one direction and then you will have a better idea of where the sweet spot starts to occur. It's best to start the process so that you have physically reset the clutch. I will make another video on the next few weeks to illustrate what I mean a bit better. Thanks for all the comments
@@EmmaHolbrookDrums Thank you so much Emma, I really appreciate it! I'll give this a try when I get off work. A follow-up video showing how to do it exactly would be great, not seeing much on the webs at all. Thank you so much.
I have a Roland td-17kvx2 on the way. Before I even get it I'm thinking about making some changes. I was thinking about putting a pd-85 on Tom 2 and a pdx-100 for the floor tom. Will that work?
I don't see why not, you'll have to go into pad settings and tell the module what the pad for that specific channel is. It's all just midi information so in theary it should work. Good luck with the setup!
Hi Emma thanks for your advices. I need a similar solution to replace my noisy rolland bass drum. Can you recommend me the specs of the snare (size) the model of the trigger and the model of the snare stand? Thanks!
Hi Federico. The size of the snare really doesn't matter but maybe something on the lighter side so that the stand can hold it. Then use A 3 ply silent head on it. There are lots of brands. You can even try putting some fabric under this when you put it on to deaden the feel so it's not so springy. I use a really chunky snare stand to support the snare on a 90o angle so the Mapex falcon snare stand. Trigger is the Roland single rt30 I think?
Indeed the supplied kick pad is LOUD. I play pretty heavy, Bonham style - do you think a snare would hold up as a kick pad? Also, how is the rebound in terms of heel-toe double strokes?
Yes this is a fair point. Firstly I think you need a heavy duty snare stand. Mine is the Mapex Falcon so pretty sturdy. Possibly may need securing to the frame with zip ties for extra peace of mind. What I would stay now is definitely a 3 ply head, perhaps with an old t-shirt or bit of fabric underneath this stretching across the frame to add a more dampened feel. Then make sure your pedal is on a decent rug with a good grip or velcro. Then it should be fine for double stroke / heavy playing. I'm more of a jazzy / off the head player but I think it should work for your style as well if you make sure the set up is robust. Thanks for the comment!
My Hi hat is well calibrated, but I think the sound when closing it is quite loud, it's actually louder than my bass drum (as I'm using a foam beater). I wonder if I'm doing something wrong or if there are tips how to make it more silent... Put more felt maybe?
Great video on this Emma, at this present time I absolutely HATE the hi hat lol! It's taken me ages to get it right and I have collaborated it like in the manual I will try your way! I just can't get a nice sound when I want to open up the hit hat when playing grooves!

Amazing drumming and advice on the hi hat calibration! Can you please tell me how you were able to move your brain to somewhere else besides the end left or right caps on the rack? How did you move it in between the hats and the tom? Thanks!
Hi Jared. Sure the mount for the brain can go vertical or horizontal. Using a drum key, take the fat left leg of the drum frame as if you were in the playing position. Simply slide the brain mount on and it should then become clear where the mount can go on. The plastic mount between the frame and the brain can be mounted in two ways. I hope this helps
