This Texan man rescued a baby oriel from a snake but was confused about how to help it, as he tried to explain in his strong southern accent which garnered over 14 million views on TikTok.
Wife Ambry Pack was relaxing at home when she was suddenly approached by her husband, John Pack, who had a baby oriel cupped in his hands.
John explained that a snake nearly ate the bird but he had saved the small critter and killed the dangerous reptile.

Well yeah I just hope he had the sense to look up what to actually feed that thing and how often. They need live insects and invertebrates on a pretty much constant supply apart from when they're sleeping. Being 'parent' to a bird is a full-time job and just being nice and kind with f*ck all idea of what you're doing is not gonna save the creature.

He shouldn’t have harmed it tbh, they are very important to our environment and are some of the first animals to feel the effects of pollution and habitat loss (amphibians and insects get hit even harder, 41% of all amphibians on the entire planet are at risk of extinction currently & we have already lost 35-148 species of amphibians in recent years, per the IUCN Red List) but the emotional reaction is completely understandable too. Everyone likes baby animals, and it’s hard to see them in danger.

I'm here because my wife sent this video to me. She believes it's a page out of our playbook. The difference would be that the snake would have lived provided it wasn't venomous. Black king snakes are the most common culprit in the south to a snake getting into a bird's nest. I would have allowed the snake it's dinner but not it's dessert. The baby bird would have been allowed in our house and been fed and natured until it chose to leave on its own. Of course we have a room set up for that type of an encounter. If I find a venomous snake while I'm outside then it's too close to my family and it must not live to do as venomous snakes have the ability to do. If I find one in the wild then I'll let it be with the hopes that I see it again before it sees me. If it does see me I just hope it remembers the time I let it pass.

@godisgood117 Nah, he should've let nature take its course. Keeping wild animals as pets is generally not a good idea. They carry parasites and diseases, and are often more trouble to take of than a domestic animal due to not being genetically predisposed to acclimate to a captive lifestyle.

Also, pretty sure snakes have no trouble finding food. As for the legality of it, yes it may be illegal but it is saving the life of that Bird which thus keeps the native bird population going. It’s also morally right to save another life. It’s not like he keeps the bird in his house or in a cage all day, from his demeanor he seems like he’d be the type to leave food around and once it grows a bit more relaxed with it outside on the porch where it is free to come and go. But who knows, maybe it’s illegal to save its life.

@@Daph112 True. I agree that predators need to eat but I also root for the babies to survive. It’s a difficult moral position for me. I don’t think he should’ve killed the snake but I don’t know the circumstances around why killing it over chasing or physically moving it so I don’t know if there was some sort of necessity there?

I rescued a baby sparrow that fell out of a nest that had been abandoned, she didn’t even even have her eyes open yet. She’s sitting on my shoulder right now, two years later. She has a diet of organic corn and peas as well as whatever I’m eating that she decides is worth her time. Love this.❤❤❤
When I was a kid, we saved a baby pigeon. A baby crow. And a sparrow.the crow stuck around for 2 years til nesting season. The pigeon followed us to school and back for 3 or so years, it would be there waiting during recess,and land and let us and our friends pet it. The sparrow flew away first chance it got. Lol. But we would catch bugs for them and squish the bugs for them.
The crow was the best, tho. So smart and so genuinely grateful. Though not as trusting as the pigeon.

Don’t they need protein? Or is it an herbivore? I assume they usually needs to eat bugs because there’s protein in bugs. I imagined that eating corn and peas wouldn’t provide much in the way of nutrition for a wild bird.
Try to suplement her with animal protein. Sparrows are omnivores and they absolutely LOVE house flies.
@@TheWholeEntireCake she also eats whatever meat I’m having for dinner. She eats eggs as well, there isn’t really much she won’t eat lol but I try to keep her away from things like grapes, onions, and chocolate.

Aw that's a baby oriole! I raised one that fell out of a tree when a hawk killed the parents. At that age insects are great to feed it. Moistened small pieces of dog kibble is also a good way to supplement it's diet. To make it easy I got meal worms and crickets from bait or pet shops. Once she was big enough to fly I would put her in a large box with some loose crickets. Once she was able to catch and eat them without my help, I knew she was ready to be released. 😊 They also eat fruit. So a slice of orange for it to peck on in its enclosure would be a nice treat. Don't put a water dish in until it can stand without falling over. Just a saucer or shallow dish with a couple millimeters of water once its a little less wobbly. The baby I raised didn't have feathers yet so I gave her a mush of chick starter blended with meal worms and water. Hope your new baby does great! ❤ You have a great heart!

I raised a baby Hooded Oriole to adulthood with wet kibble. I drove a school bus and took her with me as she had to eat constantly. Had a small bird cage I sat on the dash. Kids would get on and each one would say "Good mornin' Bird". She would chirp back. I taught her to fly and she would go outside with me and fly up into the trees and come back when I called. She never learned to eat bugs like she was supposed to and she stayed on the kibble and water until she passed. They are a migratory bird and she didn't do that either. I'm sure these things shortened her life. We had no wildlife rescues any where near me. I did the best I could and we did have a great time.
