    Lovecraftian kind of entities are so funny in 40k because all of the normal, common threats are so existential, horrific and grimdark that when there's suddenly a mysterious, unknowable cosmic horror, it's like "Hmm, eldritch interdimensional entity beyond the comprehension of any being in this plane of existence or the immaterium as well? my theory is the Pale Wasting was indeed a Necron war, likely the Imperium's first encounter with the race. but it wasn't just Necrons, it involved the last remaining shard of the C'tan god "Llandu'gor The Flayer". the region may also have been the location where Flayer was obliterated by the Necrons. an event said to have permanently altered time and space. that would explain why the Ghoul Stars feel so weird to everyone, and why they have an inherent otherworldly presence capable of even driving a passing Hive Fleet insane

      A lot of the threats to humanity in 40k are very Lovecraftian inspired in someway or another. Even the insert Chaos something you mentioned. Almost all Chaos threats are hugely Lovecraft inspired. I understand what you’re saying but maybe you haven’t been reading some of the more horrifying lore.

    • @notanalphalegionary8949
      @notanalphalegionary8949 Год назад +22

      @@samuelcondon330 I'd have to disagree with ya. I mean true cosmic horror, not simply tentacle monsters, ooze and eldritch horrors.
      Take the empire of man for example. That it is the dominating species in the galaxy is unquestionable; it's simply the logistics and defense concerning such a fuckoff huge empire that fucks them over in the end- it takes so long to get anything done, and there are literal billions of things. But what I am getting at is: orcs, eldar, squats, tau, and chaos are very easy to understand. Chaos, for example isn't an unknowable, all-powerful force outside of human comprehension. It is literally the sum of all emotions, thoughts and ideas. We can comprehend that. We can understand the four "god's" and what they represent, why they do what they do, and why they bless those they bless. Lovecraft would be hinting at these gods existing, not out and out showing us. Maybe if they showed a mutated or "blessed" space marine spouting insane bullshit about skulls or intrigue or perfection or entropy, hinting at some greater power that is never fully explained. Same goes with the Tyranids. We have so much lore on them, we know exactly how they do what they do and why. Even the old ones and necrons and freaking cataan are explained and understood better than most entities in the Lovecraft compendium
      40k has always been a "punch Cthulhu in the face" mixup of military fiction, science fantasya and horror. It shows and tells entirely too much most of the time, and anytime the lore gets truly nihilistic, freaking primarchs, space marine space marines, super duper machine boys and the thickest plate of ultra marine plot armor ruins it.
      That's what I mean when 40k cosplays as Lovecraft. There are some honestly disturbing and existentially depressing shit in the black library, but most of it, if it brushes against cosmic horror at all, is the "punch Cthulhu in the face" kind of action horror.
      Or maybe I'm just being snobby with my definitions. It's happened before lol

    I have a theory about the harrowing. It seems, the creatures from that incident were originated from the Skein, a place that transcedent material realm as it become the barrier between real space and Warp.
    "In the skein, Bielanna fought to control her feelings. The mon-keigh knew nothing of the universe’s secret workings, and for the briefest moment, she envied them their ignorance. Who but the Eldar could mourn lives that had not even been born? ‘I am Bielanna Faerelle, Farseer of Biel-Tan,’ she cried into the oceanic depths. ‘I am master of my soul and I bring only balance in my heart and thoughts.’ Everything in the skein rejected constancy. It sensed her lie. This was a place of dreams and nightmares, where all things were infinite. To give something a name marked it as not of the skein. And that was dangerous. It drew things that hid in the cracks between destinies. She saw them ooze from half-glimpsed shadows. That shadows could exist in this realm of absolute light was a measure of their threat. These were not the crystalline web-forms of warp spiders, nor yet the glimmer of future echoes moving from potential to reality. These were things twisted out of true by the tortured nature of space-time beyond the galaxy’s edge. They defied the tyranny of form, mere suggestions of grub-like null-spaces that existed only to consume. She moved onwards, far from their questing, sphincter-like mouths and blind, idiot hunger."- Forges of Mars
    It imply that there is 'crack' within the Skein, thus, became a 'way in' for nameless eldritch horrors from beyond.
    Here, a little insight about the Skein's structure.
    "She found herself in a realm of light and movement. She could see the flicker of other eldar around her, like candles in twilight. A tracery of white, the infinity circuit, linked every other light together, stretching on without horizon into the impossible distance. Energy flowed along the maze, back and forth, surging and ebbing, binding everything together with its movement, linking the eldar with one another. And beyond. Beyond was something even more spectacular, defying rationalisation. Beyond were the constantly shattering panes of existence; the overlapping planes of destiny; the interwoven threads of fate. The present surrounded Thirianna, but just out of reach was the future, and in the darkness behind was the past. Every life, every thought, every movement, every motive, every emotion, weaving together in a dazzling tapestry of cause and effect. It branched out, splitting and dividing like cells, spawning entire new universes and possibilities with every passing moment. This was the skein, and it was beautiful. And too much. Too much to see, to comprehend, to understand." - Path of the Seer

    • @afryanmahendra2055
      @afryanmahendra2055 Год назад +4

      @@angelgoo7772 The reason is simple. The character uses the infinity circuits to look upon the Skein. Because the Skein itself is the realm where fate is created and overlapping at the same time.
      "As Bielanna’s senses flowed into the skein, she followed the threads of the warriors back into the past, seeing shadowy ghost-figures spinning and leaping around her. Their every movement was fluid, economical and deadly. The phantom shapes spun around her with ever greater fury as she looked down at the wraithbone runestones in the sand. The Scorpion and the Doom of Eldanesh. Both lying atop the Tears of Isha. The pattern was familiar to her, each one tracing the line of fate’s weave. Between them they represented skeins of futures that had already been realised, that were yet to be, and which might never be. They braided together in innumerable threads, and each one was - in turn - made up of a dizzying number of potential futures, making the task of interpretation and manipulation almost impossible." - Forges of Mars Omnibus

    My headcanon for Tiamat is that not only is it a beachhead for the Hivemind itself in the form of that continent beast, but it's also where the Nids are trying a new technique far different than what they've done in the past.
    In the past, they'd infiltrate with Genestealers and establish cults. But those tend to get noticed eventually.
    The abduction of entire ships makes me think they're gonna try invading Imperial worlds not with Hive Fleets, but with Imperial ships.
    Or maybe they'd use them for recon, with specialized Tyranid bioforms designed to USE the ships. Ones that, while they could pass initial examination, are Nid to the core.
    Imagine you work on an orbital station, and a fleet of Rogue Trader ships arrive and dock. They have their papers though they're out of date, and everyone on board seems pale. They linger for a few months legitimately trading and enjoying liberty time on world before leaving.
    A year later, a Hive fleet drops into the system and they know exactly where to hit... because the crew of the Rogue trader fleet were ALL nid bioforms in the shape of the former crews. Not genestealers: infiltrators and spies of the highest order.
    And while they were in dock, they got new credentials - legally- for docking in other systems.
    Systems like Terra.

The use of the word "xeno" to refer to alien life forms is a relatively recent development that began in the late 20th century with Scottish biologist A.G. Cairns' book "Seven Clues to the Origin of Life." (1959) and most popularly with the movie Alien in (1979). My theory about 9-Kappa-Mu.
    It was places by the Old Ones back during the War in Heaven and helped Mankind advance through the ages by slowly but surely feeding information to us.
    You should never go fron First Fire to Fusion reactor, and so the artifact was designed to take it slow.
    The reason it does not have any signal nowadays is because it stopped broadcasting when Humans learned FTL travel.

      I mean if the theory is right, it's the only example of it to exist in our universe and it's a pretty small fragment, considering when this happened it might just be that either the Custodians deemed the Death are capable enough to contain the fragment, why waste the resources needed to discretely move it to Terra? Or possibly that they don't even know about it, yes the Custodians maintain an information network outside to keep an eye on the wider imperium but they tend to focus on the Terra and more specifically the Palace right?

Something that their described method of intelligence (the more there are, the better their tactics and organization.) It is my theory that they are trying to grow some sort of mass from which more can be birthed and permanently improved themselves due to pure proximity to such a massive mass of biomass.

    I don't remember what it's called, but there's a test subject locked up in the main death watch research facility that's room was completely empty. And no type of scanning or alarm would pick up it's existence. Yet the chamber reads "occupied" and what ever it is has killed people entering it's room. So it's a completely invisible horror that is just left in a empty room where no one goes in or interacts with it.

    Just a note, there are some things in the warp that have no chaos god influence. Things from before the dark gods came into existence or manifested at least. There are also some theories that the chaos gods are actually just aspects of a much greater whole i.e the dark god of chaos undivided. So three possibilities;
    1) As suggested it is a form of interdimensional entity.
    2) It is a entity of a greater whole of chaos, thus looking different.
    3) It is a "thing" from the warp that simply exists on its own.

    Fantastic video! I'd love to see you do a video on some of the lesser-known yet still incredibly terrifying xenos someday. I'm thinking species like the Enslavers, Slaugth, Lacrymole, and Rak'gol, among others. Also, I think it's possible that the Pale Wasting has had so much of its related documentation purged out of a fear that acknowledging it could somehow harm the Imperium. Whether by sowing fear and panic, or by drawing out the horrors that inflicted themselves upon the galaxy during the time of the Pale Wasting. My favorite parts were those about Subject #696, the Tyranid super-organism being created and protected by Hive Fleet Tiamat, and Artefact 9-Kappa-Mu, as I was not previously aware of these things. I also learned quite a bit about some of the topics I was already aware of. Funny thing is, I initially thought that Subject #696 was going to refer to the unconfirmed but suspected Tyranid organism (also held at Watch Fortress Erioch) that is completely undetectable to the naked eye and any auspex or other scanning methods the Imperium has attempted thus far. The only reason they know it exists is because it set off and was caught in a stasis-trap, and they can tell that it walks around in the cell it currently occupies based on the vibrations it makes. It is referred to as the "Unknown Genus" on the Lexicanum.
