Evacuation orders in place after lithium battery fire burns through roof of storage facility

After several days of burning and reigniting, a fire at a battery storage facility in Otay Mesa increased in intensity overnight Friday, damaging the building and leading to evacuation orders. On Sunday, Cal Fire said in an update that firefighters have been able to slow the progression of the fire to the point where only minimal heat is remining. However, firefighters are still on alert of any possible reignition from the lithium-ion batteries as the potential for a thermal runaway remains a concern.
